notes and thoughts on the Nine-Fingers Keene tag dive
First, the unpretty Sheets chart:
For a deeper explanation of how I break down the roles, you can see this post here; and here is a comparison of NF's tag accuracy (percentage of main + side works) vs the rest I've done:
Raphael: 75% | Nocturne: 71% | Nine-Fingers Keene: 62% | Aylin/Isobel: 56% | Minthara: 54% | Alfira: 44% | Jaheira: 36% | Araj: ~27%
Please note that at this point, Minthara's is ~9 months out of date, the rest between then and now. Take these as a general baseline versus a hard truth.
Similarly to Nocturne, Act 3 easy-ish-to-miss Nine-Fingers Keene steps neatly out of the broader fandom spotlight and into the hands of people who actually like her.
Actually - I believe a lot of people genuinely like the women of BG3. But I also believe people do not care about them, which becomes really obvious with the amount of reverse-thought-criming in some characters' tags (Jaheiraaaa). AO3 users writing about Astele Keene, especially in her more recent works, like her and they care about her.
The minor role tags were in large part due to: a character, usually Tav, has a connection to the seedy underbelly of the city, and they need to call in a favor from NF. They will meet with her and/or discuss her and/or think about her for a few paragraphs.
Nine-Fingers' main ship was, predictably, with Jaheira. Her second largest fic-status was no tagged ship at all. The other ship-fics were individual one-shots with various characters (no repeat ships).
Regardless of relationship status, she's a girl's girl for sure:
This is subdivided, so works tagged both 'gen' and 'f/f' for example are counted as one of each; 76% of her works are not only ff, 76% of her works include the ff category.
And if we change this to only include works that actively ship Nine-Fingers:
Something else interesting is that Nine-Finger's tag is small enough that I could screenshot the entirety of my Roles column:
(rotated so it's oldest -> newest by post date. main, side, minor, mistag)
We can see her early tags were all side, background, a few mistags; the most recent works being on the other end of the spectrum, almost entirely fics truly about Nine-Fingers; and a pretty smooth gradient in the middle.
I am not going to lie, at first I was like yay looks like people are finally learning to tag :-) but, what this more likely indicates is just the fading popularity of a two-year-old game -- especially with newer shinier fandoms pulling audience from the bg3 pool. Users posting more recent BG3 fanfic are primarily those still standing in the now-settled dust, writing about favorite characters/settings/lore, with a drop in the general kind of 'this is my Tav's epic love story from beginning to end (with every NPC mentioned tagged as well)!' written and posted on a new-fandom high. I imagine that brand of enthusiastic-cum-careless writers are probably posting the same but with Rook now? Sympathy to my Veilguard mutuals.
Like I mentioned above, it's been almost a year since I posted my first Minthara infographic. It will be interesting to go back this summer and see what's changed for her as well, and if the above holds up for an unavoidable Act 1 character like her versus a more missable, late-game char like Nine-Fingers.
gabrielle saying that for the few minutes xena's soul was possessing her body she felt warm and protected..... what if you did horrible things in your past and felt like an irredeemably bad person and you were a warrior who doesn't have it in her to give up the fight and you thought that made you bad beyond saving but then this woman you've fallen in love with (against all odds) tells you that for a few minutes when she could feel your spirit inside of her and truly understand what it was like to be you, she felt nothing but safe and warm and loved and protected. what then. π
"come home and see my girl cave :)" I say flirtily. You agree, imagining a rec room with some couches and maybe a few vintage consoles. I lead you down into the basement, where I have carved out a slimy grotto with its own ecosystem. by the time you see me dive into the water and come up with a fish in my teeth, it's too late. You want to fuck me so badly.
Fanfiction writers be like:
"here's the immensely time consuming 100K word novel-length passion project I'm working on between my real life job and family! It eats up hundreds of hours of my one and only life, causes me emotional harm, and I gain basically nothing from it! Also I put it on the internet for free so anyone can read if they want. Hope you love it!" :)

The state of the Nine-Fingers Keene tag on AO3 | additional notes & thoughts
Normalize leaving unhinged comments on ao3 fics you like. I'm tired of being the only one brave enough to write "I am chewing on this fic" in the comment section. Be weird. Authors will love you for it
Stop π β
I need to know who in your ship only sleeps with one pillow and who needs a minimum of 4 carefully placed pillows or their body snaps in half/shatters
rejoice! girls come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes
would you still love me if i was a cautionary tale
my dream as a fanfic writer is for one day, one of my fics to be someones comfort fic. like the fic that they reread when they don't feel good and want to be happy. i want my words to comfort someone one day

look at these two charactersβ¦wouldnβt it be a shame if theyβ¦tenderly rested their foreheads togetherβ¦
Listen - I know Iβm late, but Iβve just found Blue Eye Samurai, so Iβll be distracted for a little while.
In the meantime, I also started a new Karlach run so I can romance Minthara and play with camera mode! Enjoy this silly pic of Mama K and Fringe!
Not a gaming post; I just love H. neanderthalensis more than anything. Iβd like to think there was a functional purpose for their occipital bun such as supporting their thick shoulder and neck muscles for spear and atlatl throwing. But what do I know?
The thing is that the portrayal of Neanderthals as having been inherently grotesque and alien to H. sapiens is something we will never have proof of. But we do have proof that, in different locations and in different populations across time, we all found eachother desirable. We saw eachother and wanted to touch. And the offspring were held by their mothers and raised and had their own offspring in turn.
When you look for the first proof that H. sapiens found Neanderthals repulsive, you have to wait until the Victorian era, when the white masters of empires were busy portraying Neanderthals as stupid, brutish, and (of course) dark-skinned.
In more modern times, weβve had people arguing that instead of seeing Neanderthals as Benighted Savages, they should instead be seen as Noble Savages, (allegedly) cruelly destroyed and driven from their lands by H. sapiens. Which one of their two you believe says more about your modern political views than it does about ancient H. sapiens.
And, whether we construct Neanderthals as Savage or Noble Savage, the fundamental assumption we project into the unfathomably distant past is still that H. sapiens saw Neanderthals as an Other, with the language we use being almost explicitly that of modern racial dynamics.
But we have no proof of any of that. We have no proof of hostilities. We know we co-existed and we had sex. Thatβs it.
Humans obviously have sex with some humans and kill others. We also know that, when small groups of humans occupy vast spaces with infrequent contact with others, unique cultures will always form, some more hospitable, some more neophobic/xenophobic. But many cultures of small settlements placed among huge unpeopled landscapes place supreme emphasis on hospitality to strangers. Plus, we fucking love other social animals, as evidenced by how we befriended wolves.
Iβm a humourless weirdo and a wet blanket about popular constructions of Neanderthals as βmonstrousβ, and I freely admit it. But thatβs because itβs tied up in legacies of imperialism. Not only that, but it also privileges one culture (yours, mine, modernityβs) as being most human by implicitly assuming we can project it onto people in the past. Since you donβt pretend that all global cultures share exact same values as you do, it doesnβt take more than a few momentsβ reflection to realise you canβt do that to the past.
reblog if youβre okay with people writing fanfics of your fanfics and/or fanfics inspired by your fanfics

Is.. is it really that hard to make a show or movie where lesbians are happy? Like - they just meet, fall in love, and get to be happy?
Boring lesbians. Lesbians that have been together for 13 years and have two cats and stable jobs and still sex each other up a whole bunch on the weekends.
Iβm tired of gay trauma.
rb to tell prev they're being so brave right now and pat their head a little please
some of you need to realize that your faves would be having unsafe bdsm sex because they donβt actually know what bdsm sex is, they just want to fuck and also kill each other. you must understand this.
