Day 01: Dream

Considering how much the horror of Simon being trapped under the Curse of the Ice Crown was first and foremost based around a loss of identity 

It only makes sense that this is still what Simon struggles with now, after being freed.

Simon knows who he’s not. He’s not Ice King. He is Simon Petrikov again. But who is Simon Petrikov now? Because it seems like his current situation has really taken away all of the ways Simon used to define his identity.

‘Simon Petrikov the antiquarian and archeologist’ is… not quite it anymore. His current job is similar, since he’s still teaching people about ages long past. It’s just that now that ancient era is his original world - but it’s clear that’s not quite what he wants to do anymore. Whatever it’s because he can’t get as excited about the 20th century as he could for ‘his’ ancient times, or because he doesn’t really like his new ‘teaching method’ where is quite literally a living museum exhibit.

And what about ‘Simon Petrikov the intellectual researcher of magic and the paranormal?’

Yeah, no chance anymore. Before the Crown, Simon had a real fascination with magic and the supernatural. But now, in the wacky world of Ooo - he has lost that aspect of himself completely. He aches for the mundane.

And then there’s ‘Simon Petrikov the adventurous outdoorsman’, which we only learned about just now.

Which is another aspect of Simon’s identity lost in the new context of Ooo. Simon might’ve been able to brave the elements against rain and mosquitos and poison ivy. But in this world of dragon monsters and shapeshifting bears he is just not able to take it anymore.

‘Simon Petrikov, Marcy’s gentle caretaker’ is right out too. Not only because Simon believes Marceline just doesn’t need him anymore…

But he also doesn’t see himself as capable of helping any little kids anymore - and not just in term of ability…

But also in terms of his own personality. 

Making this little girl cry basically smashed that part of his identity to dust.

And then there’s “Simon Petrikov, Betty Grof’s beloved”, which would be a fool’s errand to keep clinging to…

And yet…

I like to headcanon that they are besties. (Not shipping)

My personal analysis of this song and how I interpret this song based on my knowledge and experience as an ex-Christian and Songwriter. Thanks @greatcelestialhieroglyphs for the idea to do this add this to the Masterlist or reboot if u want.

Trigger Warning for Religious intolerance, racism, Pedo mention, & general fear/hate mongering. This is a very eye opening song when looking at the lyrics and I’m glad a Christian band is willing to show the ugly side and it’s negative effects.

Lyrics in full: (my analysis in this color)

Taking the lives of thousands. The Oh Hellos are Christian and are against such hateful words when their religion is one of healing and forgiveness.

As he sets our torch aflame. Witch-hunt and the modern day incident of white nationalists marching with Tiki torches in Charlottesville, Va.

When the faces in her wake Look more like our own than the effigies we immolate I see this as the monsters become among the people than the others that are demonized. An example are Pedos often being youth pastors when drag queens are demonized as such.

How this song weaves and hides the message of your not looking carefully enough:

Basically, this song is very beautiful and has a lot of call and repeat with Maggie calling and the rest repeating. Even I didn’t understand the lyrics cuz I was caught in the beauty of the song. I don’t know if it was intentional or not but it shows how such nasty elements can be hidden, either by ignorance (not a bad thing as long as your willing to learn) or getting caught up in what one believes in. Like getting caught up in the beauty of the song.

Once you realize what this song is trying to say, it brings a new perspective. I’m not christan but I love The Oh Hellos and how they are willing to face the monsters in one’s own group. I know my community aren’t made of saints but for others it’s harder. Passerine is also another song with similar themes.

why are there fake transparent pngs. what kind of sick prank is this. some kind of looney tunes ass bullshit. i run at the gray and white checkered background and hit it like a wall.

I am really not a fan of "love is love" as a slogan for the queer community. It centers queerness as romantic/sexual interest in other people, and to me feels like it’s inherently ignoring or even excluding intersex people, gender variant people, aspec people, and people with intersecting queer identities. It sanitises queerness into a form that’s easily consumed by a perisexist/endosexist, allonornative, amatonormative, cisnormative culture, instead of critiquing the harm those structures cause.

“Love is love” takes the focus away from important pieces of queer history and culture, such as drag queens, butches, trans folk, and other gender variant or fluid identities. With a slogan like “love is love”, it becomes easier to imagine every queer person as looking straight or at the very most slightly camp, and just happening to be attracted to and wanting to marry someone of the same gender, with a little wiggle room for polyamorous people too.

I think it just becomes a form of respectability politics. Queerness ought to be about accepting and embracing other ways of Being, not making a little extra wedge of space for certain people in an oppressive framework that still demands gender conformity and adherence to certain relationship rules, and still pathologises intersex and aspec people. It ought to be about tearing down that framework so it’s safe for people to be however they want or need to be — regardless of whether or not that falls within what was acceptable in the original framework.

Queer culture and queer liberation are intersectional, they always have been, saying “love is love” just feels like whitewashing it away.

man it makes me really sad when people ignore the religious theming of soldier poet king to be like “well its about my blorbo/dnd character now” bc like…dear wormwood is such a deeply religious album religion and god are so central to the whole thing that it feels really like…disingenuous to try to erase the religious themes of any of the songs. like you are looking at this beautiful piece of art about love and heartbreak and the apocalypse and god and intentionally discarding a central theme so it can be more easily consumed. why did you listen to the christian indie folk rock band if you didn’t want to hear christian indie folk rock. im not even christian but it bothers me

making my way through the oh hellos discography one album at a time and listening to dear wormwood had me like "oh ok this is beautiful powerful music, can't believe i went so long without hearing it!" but notos got me like

he/theys be like "yoooo pass the aux lemme play some bangers" and put on some song that sounds like it was contrived by a ragtag band of little woodland creatures with sticks and rocks
