“That was hell. Remind me to never take the elevator ever again, will you?” He rhetorically asked the baby, who was too distracted with the passing cars and loud sounds of the city. He looked at Dirk expectantly. “We really need to get you a name, lil dude. You can’t be ‘Mini Strider’ forever.” He looked around, attempting to get some sort of inspiration, the little Strider copying him. They finally reached the local convenience store, grimacing. “I don’t plan on naming you after a can of soup, but it might happen, man.” The baby replied with some babble, holding onto his glasses. Entering the store, it was plenty cooler than the air outside. The baby giggled at the bug-repellent air barrier. So easily entertained. The two of them waded around the store, looking at baby-safe foods, toys, and fighting over the fact the infant can’t just grab things off the shelf, no, put that down, stop it, you can’t even eat those yet you greedy, grubby monster. Dirk eventually found the perfect item- a baby carrier he could just buckle around his chest. Absolutely perfect. He can use both arms while also carrying the child. Amazing how technology has come so far. He picked up the small box, offering it to the child as a trade for the…. Popcorn? He picked up off the shelf. The infant was happy with this trade, chewing on the corner of the box. “Hungry, ain’t we? We can go somewhere when we’re headed home.” The baby returned a happy sound. They waited in line for the cashier, Dirk quietly humming a tune to a song he had heard recently, title and artist unknown. He swayed side to side with the babe, bouncing him as he giggled and snorted with the temporary entertainment. He stopped when they reached the register, putting the items on the counter for them to be scanned. The person at the counter was a troll- the grey skin and tricolored horns a prominent feature- which wasn’t uncommon for this area. Dirk dug in the back of his mind, reminded of when Roxy had told him about a select few passively living on Earth with humans. The baby stared through his sunglasses, grumbling some sort of strung together sentence to the troll. The stranger smiled, sharper teeth exposed, waving softly at the infant. “ThVt’s Vn VdorVble wiggler. Is it yovrs?” Dirk shrugged. “I guess he is now.” They both paused awkwardly, the troll handing over the two plastic bags of whatever baby supplies was bought. Eventually, the troll cleared their throat, stating their trained phrase. “ThVnk yov for purchVsing, come VgVin soon.” This led to Dirk grabbing the bags and nodding, a silent sign of goodbye. The baby turned still, looking over his shoulder to stare at the troll some more. They walked down the sidewalk, Dirk shuffling the three things around so his arms wouldn’t get sore, sighing as he eyed the smaller shops. “You shouldn’t stare, man. It’s considered rude.” The baby retorted with another babble, probably complaining. Dirk only smiled faintly, turning into a local cafe.

Ethan laughed to himself, watching his boyfriends from across the boathouse's kitchen. They made him so happy, did he really deserve them? No, did they really deserve him, a sad, mopey man? He saw them together alot lately, not because of how small the boathouse was. Did they not like him anymore? Nick would usually be all over him, now he was only over by James, hugging his arm and not saying anything. No flirting, no complements, nothing.
He made himself to the roof-thing they made together, the slightly moldy wood being soft to the touch and right under the stars. He thought of all kinds of things to himself, not noticing the two others joining him. It was a quiet night, he had his eyes closed and his hands above him, and his lovers next to him. They laid close next to him, sandwiching him with love. They said sweet things, assuring him that they loved him and that they would never separate. The boat rocked slowly.
Soon after, they all were asleep. Well, not that long. Ethan woke to Nick barely holding James on the edge, sharp rocks right under him. He couldn't make out what they were saying, it was pure panic throughout them all. He rushed over to them, failing by the smallest of a second, the strict waves pulling both Nick and James into the rocky water.
He screamed out for them, not seeing any remains or either of them appearing out of the water surface. Then he saw it. The black fins, one of the worst apex predators of the ocean. He didn't realize they were so far out, not far enough to reach orca territory. He couldn't breathe, his heart stopping and praying to his wish of a god for them to be okay. The panicked man jumped into the clear stinging water. He felt the harsh killer whales push against him, but he wanted to find them. He needed to find his only reason to be on the water, on the earth, here. He reached the surface, taking another breath before noticing an arm, diving back in to get it, hoping there was a body attached.
He pulled the hand out of the water, James gasping for air as he was revealed from under it. Ethan's tears staining his face out of fear, he held onto James tightly, he was pale. It was just because of the lack of oxygen, probably. He pulled James onto the boat, realizing he was holding a passed out Nick barely poking out of the water. They were alive. They were all together, on the boat. Well...mostly. The orcas tossed the water around them, James helping Nick with the gash on his face from the rocks. Ethan looked at them, the damage setting in. James lost his leg and had been bitten in the side. Nick's face had a huge hole in it, you could see the bone right under his eye and blood over his weakly dyed teal hair.
That's why he was so pale. James collapsed, losing too much blood. Ethan held him up, making sure he wouldn't land on Nick. He somehow managed to pull both of them inside, tending to them as best he could with their lack of supplies. He then immediately went to steer them out of the rocks and whales.
They were free. They were fine now. It was all okay.
Ethan woke up on the roof, gasping for air. Where were they?
He heard them, talking and laughing in the lower level. Of course, it was just a dream. Nothing bad had really happened. "Hey, how....how are you both? Feeling okay?" He questioned, having made his way to their seats. The area went quiet, him looking at them. "What, is it that weird for me to ask that? Haha." They smiled, James standing up first. "It's okay now, Ethan." Nick nodded, kissing his cheek.
"You can let us go now."
Ethan stood there, looking at the two rotting bodies at his dinner table. He laughed. "Nice one guys, now, what do you want for lunch? Hotdogs?" He went to prepare more food, the flies rushing out of his way from the older food on the table. The boathouse was a mess, blood dripping from the seats. Rotting food everywhere, leftovers from Nick and James.
"You guys are really picky lately."
sometimes I miss your stupid face, and your taste, and your smoking gun
