The room was lush with peonies. They sprouted everywhere like mushrooms. Rosy and citrusy, petal-like notes that tickled your nostrils. They bloom like the organza of a wedding dress or perhaps, the tulle of a ballerina’s tutu. You were to be his bride just like you were to be his doll. It was all the same. The flowers you appraised with indifferent eyes at the florist’s that day. They didn’t dance like they would in a meadow but sat prim and proper in their place like women used to do, to be plucked and owned by a touch inferior to the sun.

Flowers are beautiful but like many beautiful things, they wither just like the eye that looks upon it. Hence, your captor’s doe eyes and cherry-pink lips do not deter you. Yes, he was easier on the eyes. It really made things much easier for you.

“Pink peonies symbolise love at first sight,” your friend had said. She was the florist, the only reason why you were standing in the shop of flowers that day.

You gazed upon the fresh flower and its unbridled petals. “No wonder it’s so overwhelming,” you smiled. “So much happening at once, it’s difficult to pinpoint that it’s not love at all.”

Your friend had rolled her eyes, knowing very well that you didn’t believe in love at first sight.

But your captor certainly did.

There was an abundance of pink peonies in the room you were trapped in. Four walls freshly painted in a shade of your favourite colour. A vanity table littered with your holy grail of beauty products. The spines of your beloved books stood tall on mahogany shelves. You could smell the paint and books just like the blood on his hands and your favourite perfume spritzed on his ivory-white collar.

How adorable, you thought.

He looked adorable. He really did. On his knees with a plate of food. Hand hovering in the air with a silver spoon. He chewed on his bottom lip while staring at you with his sickeningly sweet chocolate brown eyes.

“P-Please eat.”

You’re decently smart, somewhat funny, and not pretty enough to stand out, but not exactly hideous according to societal standards (source: those beauty quizzes in Seventeen magazine that you used to be obsessed with when you were thirteen and in desperate need of flirting tips). If he was the main lead, you’d probably be Extra #6, maybe Extra #2 on a good day.

By your calculations, the two of you should never cross paths, like two parallel lines. Wait, scratch that, you would probably never be aligned with anything that has to do with this guy. You saw him standing outside of the door of your shared accounting classroom during your fall semester, and he spent twenty five minutes editing his picture for Instagram and ended up late for the lecture. And he probably already spent even more time selecting the final photo to edit before you arrived to class and noticed him. Absolute idiot. Absolute handsome idiot, but idiot nonetheless. A grade A himbo with a grade C in financial accounting.

Okay, so scrap the parallel lines theory, maybe skew lines are a better way of explaining it. Yeah, that seems about right, the two of you are from completely different dimensions, never meant to interact or run parallel with each other. And once again, by this logic, your paths should never cross.
