A new place to spend money I don't have.
Three highly-anticipated crisp, brown packages arrived today via airmail from Persephone Books. The Far Cry by Emma Smith (1949), High Wages by Dorothy Whipple (1930), and Mariana by Monica Dickens (1940). The tie in end-paper bookmarks featuring period textile patterns are the cherry on top.
I wish there was a way to see which users’ posts you like most often. There are some days when I look at what I’ve liked and it’s predominantly from one poster or another. They are like my Tumblr soulmates in a way.
Perfect book
This is the perfect medieval book: it is on purple parchment, written in golden letters, and illuminated with great images. To top it, the book is fitted in an original bookbox, very few of which survive. What more could a book lover want?

I mainly read YA because I have a PhD in literature and I need the complexity and emotion to remain intellectually engaged, but sometimes I do like to relax with an adult book. It’s nice to rest my mind with long descriptions and philosophical digressions and to read about feelings like ambivalence and activities like elder care. I really enjoy Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume because he writes so well about vegetables before he gets to the sexy bits.
