The James Webb Space Telescope has just completed a successful first year of science. Let’s celebrate by seeing the birth of Sun-like stars in this brand-new image from the Webb telescope!

This is a small star-forming region in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex. At 390 light-years away, it's the closest star-forming region to Earth. There are around 50 young stars here, all of them similar in mass to the Sun, or smaller. The darkest areas are the densest, where thick dust cocoons still-forming protostars. Huge red bipolar jets of molecular hydrogen dominate the image, appearing horizontally across the upper third and vertically on the right. These occur when a star first bursts through its natal envelope of cosmic dust, shooting out a pair of opposing jets into space like a newborn first stretching her arms out into the world. In contrast, the star S1 has carved out a glowing cave of dust in the lower half of the image. It is the only star in the image that is significantly more massive than the Sun.

Thanks to Webb’s sensitive instruments, we get to witness moments like this at the beginning of a star’s life. One year in, Webb’s science mission is only just getting started. The second year of observations has already been selected, with plans to build on an exciting first year that exceeded expectations. Here’s to many more years of scientific discovery with Webb.

vivilly accidentally kills palpers, and while palpers is still alive and still here, palpers has to deal with intense phantom pains from his wounds for a couple hours to a few days (depending on how bad the injuries were)

imagine the angst and the guilt plssss (i'm normal)

i've been so mentally ill about this ever since you sent this hello. i did not have many thoughts build off of this because the idea is perfect alone But.

the guilt that vivilly would feel ..... when palpers is having another episode vivilly feels so horrible because like....... what CAN he do in that situation. he can comfort him i guess. talk to him too, but that's about it . he wouldn't let himself feel even an ounce of warmth because he did that. he caused this, even if it wasn't him in the moment

THE ANGST. THE GUILT. PERHAPS TRAUMA. vivilly Knows that physically, palpers is fine, but still . experiencing that and not being able to help it would be fuckin Awful. POOR DUDE. poor sad sopping wet cat palpers (even if all of viv nation agrees that palpers is dawg coded). AAAAUUUUGHHHHGGGG. he's gritting his teeth in pain and viv finds him and blud drops everything going R U OK? but palpers snaps a bit at that like,,, something about it is so overwhelming or upsetting to him and he's in So much pain . he half shouts DUDE I'M FINE which makes it Worse. viv knows he isn't fine. he doesn't know how to help during those times but he also can't leave him alone. WAAAAAAHHHH
