Imagine nations having something really embarrassing happen to them. It could result in a death or simply be a whacky dare that they are forced to do.
They go on with their life thinking "wow, sure am glad no one saw that happen!"
Only to be flipping through the channels one night, some years or even decades later, to find out an entire Unsolved Mysteries episode about it. In horror, they quickly Google it. Only to find out an entire Reddit page dedicated to it, hundreds of YouTube videos, and TikTok's with millions of views.

If anyone cares for my symbolism:
A nebula is often formed by the gas and dust ejected by a dying star after it burns out all its fuel. Stars die once the energy from fusion isn’t enough to sustain its mass, causing a collapse that produces a supernova, throwing heavy elements into space. Throughout a star’s life, they’re constantly fighting their own collapse, fusing hydrogen into helium to resist the pressure of their own gravitational pull. They die when they can no longer do this.
In the au I’m obsessed with that only exists in my head (more here), both of them sacrificed their teenage experiences to get into the school they did, and kind of know nothing else; in that way they’re fighting their own collapse and burnout. They're each other's first run-ins with a relationship like this and that experience makes them feel unable to sustain a disconnected tunnel vision outlook on life, if that makes sense. Hence star death.
And nebulae are how new stars form :)

Ok so they're undergraduates in college, got randomly assigned roommates, and both earning a degree in aerospace engineering. They did not like each other at all at first, very competitive and both top of their class, but because of the horrific gender ratio they'd stick together anyway (it was also hard not to because they were roommates) and have each other's backs which established a trust despite hating each other on the surface.
And I imagine they didn’t really have coming of age experiences because both spent all their time studying to get into their university in the first place; they haven’t really explored things like sexuality and romance and whatnot. They also are both fucked up in the head, especially Anya, and suck at genuine human connection yeah
Because they have this stupid rivalry they become really enamored with the thought of having an equal and a perfect match and really being understood as a person do eventually they kind of become obsessed with each other. And they don’t want to admit to even being proper friends because neither of them “do friends” (for Jackie it’s a “keeping everyone as an acquaintance so no one can see me as anything less than perfect” thing and for Anya it’s “human connection is a waste of time and I fuck up every single relationship” thing) but if either of them even seemed properly friendly with someone else the other would get so jealous they’d feel actually sick.
Jackie’s really taken with the thought of Anya being the only one that sees the “real her” and Anya is obsessed with the idea that Jackie will stay with her and see her as the most important priority. and they see each other more than anyone else and study together and witness the other when they're not put together in a way that feels more vulnerable and intimate than anything they've ever experienced. and both of them are way too possessive and want it to be them against the world but they also sometimes want to destroy the other for knowing them like that
So yeah they’re just in this fucked up codependent borderline situationship and they keep having the homoerotic encounters that most people deal with in middle school but they’ve never felt like this before and it’s intoxicating

You might have noticed that i havent been posting art that much recently, which has been caused by a variety of reasons, but one of which is that I've been hunkered down and working on this series about my Siberian OCs!!! Really proud of how these turned out, esp the embroidery and patterns, even if i did fry my hand a bit in the process LOL

Yukagir: Resident old lady surrounded by (who she sometimes considers annoying) youngins, sweet demeanour and pleasant to talk to, though she isn't immune to giving a good scolding when a younger Siberian is annoying her. Lots of knowledge from her many years when it comes to practical stuff so is good with her hands, though she finds other things difficult to remember… Sakha: Approachable and outgoing, hardheaded and unafraid to speak his mind. Big organiser of events and knows who everyone is - is always trying to extend his reach, even outside of Siberia. Smokes like there's no tomorrow. Was kind of a menace in his youth - his neighbours don't let him forget. Is artistic at heart, has sketchbooks full of illustrations and is pretty crafty. Saul Goodman who? Evenia: Easy going but usually keeps to himself, often mistaken for Evenkia much to his chagrin. Somewhat playful, loves some good banter. Excellent storyteller and has a million random tips and tricks stored in his head. Sporty, loves to challenge people to a race.
Dolgan: Similar to Sakha, she is also hard headed and unafraid to speak her mind, seeing as he raised her. Very studious and serious about her research, calculative about a lot of her actions. Seems timid on the surface because of her appearance, but she's managed to wield a lot of influence. Usually decked out in pretty clothing and jewellery from Sakha. Evenkia: Likes to take on a mentor role to those younger than him, like he did with Sakha. Very knowledgeable and enjoys problem solving. Has a bit of a reputation for dumping children of his onto others, though you would never guess this through his appearance alone. Enjoys collecting things, nerdy. Ket: Serious faced mostly and protective of himself, quite reserved, so it means a lot when he lets his guard down. Very particular about his routines, though this has made him quite good at planning and organising. Caught up in his own thoughts a lot - makes sense seeing as he's the last survivor of the Yenisein family.
Chukotka: Social butterfly and very outgoing. Likes to be sort of a big sister figure to people, including North American groups. May seem scatterbrained and silly on the surface but she is far more clever than she lets on. Very girly and bubbly, wears jewellery that jingles as she walks past. Koryak: "Sibling" of Chukotka but personality wise he's quite different - he takes himself a bit more seriously. Dry sense of humour, and like Ket, he can be pretty sarcastic. Has a reputation of being a troublemaker (blame Russia for that), he's really not though. Being somewhat strung up is unfortunately his default these days. Itelmen: Woman respecter™ (no seriously look up the Itelmens' original polytheistic religion). Invites the other Siberians to his celebrations and is a pretty good host, but is prone to being possessive over them (as in, he wants to remind them that this is HIS tradition so don't try and claim it 🙄). Also prone to unprompted malding. His hair is well styled and maintained, though he pretends like he does nothing to it so as to not give up his secrets.
BONUS:
Why would Alfred speak Diné? Did he learn it from the Navajo Code Talkers from World War II? I hope I’m not sounding rude, I would just like to understand where this headcanon comes from.
it's not rude at all, I actually do want to explain it! especially because the Navajo/Diné Nation was very much on "Mexican land" before "becoming American land".
my hc is that Alfred began learning and speaking Diné Bizaad during the California gold rush, its statehood, and the manifest destiny movement (all events occurring in 1845-55) because his Anglo overseers and settlers wanted him to become familiarized with the American West (I hc he was VEHEMENTLY against it and sabotaged it in every way he could).
he gradually got closer to Diné people altruistically and interacted with their traditions and culture (this is absolutely where he got the custom to smudge-- yall see how much he hates ghosts!!). by the time California, Nevada, Arizona, etc. became states, he was wholly engrained into the Diné community.
his involvement with the Diné Nation did not end there; there was the "finding" of the Grand Canyon by Anglo settlers, the building of the Hoover Dam, and INDUBIOUSLY the diné code talkers. in modern times, he involves himself with the diné community for conservation efforts but most importantly, to celebrate his people (hc that he ever only told the code talkers and n8v elders of his immortality/who he is).

to begin, Russia and America have more than 300+ indigenous cultures and languages within their regions. I do not aim to represent them as a monolith nor do my hcs aim to define a solitary native culture as their respective identities. seeing as they are a personification of their countries, I see them as an amalgamation of each culture's traditions.
working off the last post where I reference them speaking Diné and Koryak:
they began speaking these languages to each other in the early 1800s because of how close they were growing as friends. seriously, Fort Ross (aka Metini as named by the Pomo indigenous people of the region) was a Russian settlement established in California that existed to trade only with Americans. Alfred and Ivan used this settlement to get to know each other better and truly appreciate their indigenous identity over the revered status of their caucasian colonial overseers (Fort Ross was actually funded by an imperialist company so pls assume cultural diffusion is the only good thing they did; I only ref it as a point in history that connects their indigeneity as Siberian, Alaskan, and American natives all passed through this fort). It started off as a means to better interact with each other's people but then they began communicating exclusively with each other,,, and then it became more intimate,, y'know.
they would often hunt together (and al absolutely knocked it outta the park) but ivan would help him with preparing fur pelts (as koryaki or aleut/inuk culture exceeded at making coats and it was the largest trade in FR).
Native American and Siberian and Inuit/Inuk peoples in early history were IN LOVE with astronomy (and i'd say the pioneers of astronomy as a science)! this is where both Ame and Rus acquired their appreciation for space, and of course, the number one thing they geek tf out about together. space is not simply their hyper-fixation, but a part of everything they do. they plan ceremonies in kamchatka by the arrangement of the stars (specifically the Pleiades, or aka sakiattiak (Inuit) or coyote's daughters (Paiute)) because it is the origin of indigenous life. they camp out in chaco canyon at every equinox to stargaze.
they don't stay 'I love you' to each other. however, they do cook each other the most elaborate and appreciative meals: venison with cowberry sauce, smoked omul, cajun salmon, frybread (NAVAJO TACOS 4EVER) w all sorts of toppings, and BEEF JERKY! they prepare the best beef jerky in the whole darn tootin world!!!
Ivan is the singer in this boy band and Alfred is the dancer (and drummer tbh). Ivan is downright gifted in throat singing and could perform the dance of the seagulls with one stoli bottle and half a bar of alenka chocolate in his system. alfred can belt out while drumming, there's no doubt-- but I can tell you right now that he is DEADLY with his men's traditional dance. tbh, he wins 1000+ seduction points with Ivan when he dances lol
THEY CREATE FOR EACH OTHER. when they hunt, they use every bone in that sacred creature's body to make each other charms, knives, bracelets, rings, little beads for beaded jewelry--
AND BOY DO THEY BEAD!! ivan's regalia is comprised of reindeer skin and beads, and al will go 40 hrs straight sewing them on for him as well as making his headbands and jingle bells (he's a pattern whizz). al is more of a boujee native, so Ivan freaking obliges him so much that he will bead the most beautiful earrings, chains and medallions you have ever seen (he is a design whizz-- also alfred begged him for one with the vegas knights to brag to his bro about cause STANLEY CUP RAAAAH!!)

no seriously, I'm thinking of lez rusame in 1987 los angeles. amelia is a dancer in vegas and she travels to la to audition for acting roles. anya is a bratva leader who married a mob leader in order to have authority within the organization.
they meet at a party in hollywood that gets shot up because they're targeting anya but amelia doesn't know this. anya is the only one that gets severely injured so amelia drives her to the hospital because the cops wouldn't make it on time. she drops her off that the hospital until her family gets there and calls it a day. weeks later, anya looks for her to thank her and ultimately tracks her down in las vegas and things blossom from there.
I'm thinking anya keeps it hidden from amelia on what she really does and tries giving her anything she wants. since she wants to be an actress, she probably ends up pulling strings for her to land a good acting gig.
still working out the kinks but dammit, i need mafia women!!!
