I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.

I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.

The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.

Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.

I am Heba Al-Dahdouh. I currently live in the completely destroyed city of Gaza. Since the war on Gaza began on 7/1/2024, my family- my father Nasif, my mother Asmaa, and my siblings Khaled, Ahmad, Muhammad, and Malak-have been living in constant fear, crying, and suffering due to shrapnel, shells, and bullets.

We have no food, no electricity, no cooking gas, no schools, no homes, no cleaning supplies, and no clothes. My school has been bombed, and my brother Khaled's university is now rubble, depriving us all of education. The war has forced us to live in displacement centers, which are just tents unsuitable for living, especially in winter.

Every day we live death, terror, and panic a thousand times because of the ongoing bombardment of my city. The war has killed more than 50 of my relatives and neighbors. At the start of the war, we sought refuge at my aunt's house, . Imagine: we have survived imminent death more than 20 times and have been displaced among shelters more than 13 times. My siblings and I have suffered from many illnesses due to malnutrition, and we need medication continuously.

I am Ibrahim from Gaza, from a family of 3. I have a head injury, my eye was amputated, and there is a bullet in my head that has many complications. I need to receive treatment quickly, but I cannot because of the war on Gaza. The health situation is very difficult, and I need your help to travel outside Gaza and receive treatment, implant a lens in my eye, and remove the bullet that caused the cerebral fluid to bleed from my nose. We have nothing left and are unable to secure our basic needs such as food, water, and safe shelter. I cannot provide clothes for my daughter Shahd, nor can I provide diapers, milk, or anything that will make them forget the harshness of the war and the coming winter, and I am unable to provide for my family’s needs.

On October 7th, our lives changed forever. My family left our home to the southern Gaza Strip on the beach, hoping to return soon. 😭But that did not happen. Our home was surrounded and then completely destroyed. Our home, which was once a bastion of hope, is now in ruins and destruction. Our dreams have been shattered. I appeal to the whole world to hear my sad cries and the cries of my family and my daughter, for whom I cannot provide any of her rights as a child.

We need a helping hand to leave Gaza and receive treatment to implant a lens so that my daughter Shahad can see me in the most beautiful way and remove the bullet from my head that made me suffer a lot. I hope you will help me if each person donates 10 dollars. You will help us live in the difficult conditions in Gaza. The most difficult decision for us was to leave Gaza to overcome the obstacles we faced and the losses we suffered and start a new life from scratch and provide for the needs of my daughter Shahad like all the children in the world.
