hello there! i would like to ask if you know any sites where i can practice reading japanese? like news sites, manga sites, or sites that offer free e-books that are in japanese. and are there any japanese podcasts that i can listen to? thank you in advance for answering this question. it'd mean a whole to me!
Hey there! There are actually quite a few recommended sites for Japanese learners, so Iāll link them right now :)
Japanese IO ā Iāve used this site quite a few times and I loveĀ the interface! The design is really sleek andĀ āto the point,ā so thereās no distractions from what youāre trying to do, which is practice reading Japanese. It also has a great library and look-up feature.
ęę„å¦ēę°č社 ā This is theĀ ākidās versionā of the more adult ęę„ę°č社. If you donāt feel that youāre quite up for the adult version, test out the version geared towards kids. They have fewer articles, but thereās plenty for a learner to pick through.
NHK NEWS EASY ā Iām almost positive this is one of the most famous ones for learners. Itās similar to Asahiās kid newspaper ā articles are condensed with easier kanji and vocabulary, and itās geared towards children, so learners can spend some time combing through updated articles and testing their skills.
Yahoo! Kids ā More short news articles geared towards easier-to-understand Japanese.
MATCHA ā A fun magazine similar in style to NHK EZ.
Watanoc ā Another magazine-type site with a variety of articles.
Traditional Japanese Stories ā Get your hands on some easily printed Japanese stories that are told to children. Great for language skills andĀ culture! Similar to English pop culture stories (like Cinderella and so on), Japan has its own fairytales that are occasionally referenced.
Fuku Musumeās Fairy Tale Collection ā More stories!
World of ćć§ć³ćć§ć³ ā These are beginner stories, but as you progress you can read other stories on this website.
EhonNavi ā Read hundreds of Japanese picture books for free!
If youāre looking for more advanced contentā¦
NHK ā Japanās national broadcaster. You can read articles as well as stream audio and video (may be blocked depending on location).
ęÆę„ę°č ā Moderate/left-leaning national newspaper
ęę„ę°č ā Left-leaning national newspaper
čŖ売ę°č ā Conservative national newspaper
ę±ę“ēµęøćŖć³ć©ć¤ć³ ā A well-known business and finance magazine.
Project Gutenberg (Japanese) ā Get access to a ton of out-of-print and classical books for free.
å°čŖ¬å®¶ć«ćŖćć ā A site where authors can publish their works online in exchange for reviews.
é空ęåŗ« ā Another site where you can get older and out-of-print novels.
University of Virginia Japanese Text Initiative ā Another place to access novels in Japanese for free (with the option to read them with furigana).
ComicWalker ā Free manga from the publisher Kadokawa. Thereās an app too!
ęåē· ā You can read some manga online for free.
ć³ćć³ ā More free Japanese manga available here!
ćććŖć ā A womanās lifestyle blog which covers fashion, cooking, decor, and more!
Magazine Lib ā You can read PDFs of Japanese magazines.
1000ęåå°čŖ¬ ā A place where users can submit 1000 characters or less stories.Ā
I also highlyĀ recommend starting a Twitter (if you donāt already have one) and following Japanese accounts. I follow a lot of feminist and political accounts so that Iām learning words relevant to my interests, as well as interacting with people that are discussing topics of interest to me (i.e. women and their place in Japanese society).
If youāre curious, you can find me on Twitter at @sydney0313 :)
I hope this list proves useful to you! (And others.)

so, you're taking a class and you hate it: how to make a bad class suck less
as i struggle through my spring quarter classes, i thought i may as well make a post about something currently relevant to me: taking classes that you don't like.
maybe you're taking a degree or distribution requirement; maybe you signed up for a class because it's exactly in your field of interest, but the professor is a really bad lecturer (not that this is personal experience or anything); maybe, you just...........don't enjoy your class for whatever reason.
so, you have two options: drop the class, or continue on.
since you're reading this post, i assume you can't drop the class for whatever reasonāsomething from above, or maybe something else. i'm not going to judge you! but here's some things that, in my experience, have made bad classes, well, less bad (in no particular order).
one: find ways to make your time before and after the class in question as enjoyable as possible. likely this class drains your energy horriblyāso doing something that makes you happy or calms you down before the class, and something to destress afterwards, you'll feel a bit better almost immediately. this can, in my experience, take me from hating an entire day of my week, to being frustrated but able to deal with it. examples of things i do, depending on my energy levels and time:
take a nap
read some of a book
draw
take a walk
write
two: schedule your week so you finish everything up until the day of the class (both for that class and your others) before the day of the class. for me, there's nothing more stressful than getting out of my second to last class, and realising i still have to do five types of homework before i can even think of relaxing or calming myself down about the class i'm dreadingāassuming i even have any time to do so! this is a more long-term strategy, so if you can, you should start to do this as soon as possible. for me, this looks like making to do lists on my blog to keep myself accountable, or setting alarms to remind myself to do things (since i'm not very good at keeping a planner).
three: talking to your friends or family! the power of complaining before or after a really draining experience can be very cathartic. oftentimes, your friends or family will be very sympathetic to your frustrations. they can also help distract you if you need it!
four: somewhat similar to oneāreward yourself for making it through the class! on wednesdays after my dreaded class, i buy myself a cookie and watch bad book reviews, because i am both food- and gossip-motivated.
five: keep on top of classwork. if nothing else, you have to make sure you don't fall behind in your least favourite class. it'll make everything feel fifty times worse. if you have a required presentation and a final project, start working on them or thinking about what/how you're going to do them as soon as you find out about them. get these done as soon as possible, or at least start working on them, so that when the due-date approaches you don't panic.
hopefully my experiences will help you!
- write down a list of goals and habits you want to implement in your life.Ā
- meditate. lay down, alone with your thoughts, left to truly think and have time with your conscious mind unoccupied by distraction. take the time to actually listen to yourself with undivided attention
- engage in yoga. stretch.
- write down what you're grateful for
- take a shower. put on freshly-scented lotion. refresh and restart.
- do laundry. clean outĀ and organize your clothes, donate some
- refresh and restart your phone, laptop, desktop, etc. clean out and organize your files, applications, layout, etc. filter out your social media from youtube to instagram to twitter to contain content towards your betterment
- call your family and friends. have a discussion, talk to them, laugh with them
- hang out with your friends. have a study session orĀ just be together asĀ you all sketch, paint, journal, eat
- listen to podcasts for personal growth and development. humor, health, productivity, any kind of podcast.
- clean and reorganize your home. clean out the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, etc. rearrange and design them. let your home reflect you. give it a breath of fresh air with change, whether small or big
- plan out your week // bullet journal
- learn. learn a new language, take out a notebook, write notes, listen to audios, practice. learn another programming language. learn about the history of islam. learn cryptography and encryption. learn anything that excites you, that betters you
- get a blanket and go out and lie in nature
- read. read a book on personal development, read a book in a foreign language, read a book about history, read articles about the most random things or articles catered to your interests, to self growth, to the present world today. read to learn.
- go out and volunteer. contribute to and for good. help out at a homeless shelter, help with a sustainability project or beach clean up, aid and provide comfort and ease to the elderly, sick, and young
- sit down. read the quran. reflect andĀ understand.
- go on a bike ride. take in the air that hits you, the side conversations that leave your hearing just as quickly as they enter, take in the moment.
one could see this just as a list of stuff to do, and it basically is. but for me, it's a multitude of opportunities to grow, to better, to breath, to live. I'd like to spend my time actually living, doing good, growing, being conscious and present, so here are some notes to myself, and hopefully you.
listen I ended up regretting saying anything about this on my old blog because people will interpret literally any and every statement maliciously on this hellsite but I want to start like. a helpline for people who are likeĀ āhey I pretty much only read YA but Iām like 22 now and donāt relate to teenagers as much, itās such a shame that there are no fun books written for adults :(ā because boy HOWDY are there some fun books for adultsĀ
Hey, can you suggest some books and poems dealing with mental illness, something along the lines of 4.48 psychosis by Sarah Kane?? ps. you have an impeccable literary taste š¤
iām sure if youāve read 4.48 psychosis then youāre aware of how full on it is so trigger warnings apply for all of these, read with caution. iām sure thereās many more novels out there but these were the ones that came to mind first <3Ā
