Those faces are literally CARVED INTO the mountain, so the choice is to leave them (preserving the legacy of genocidal colonizers) or trying to carve them out and risking causing even more harm.

There is no good solution. That mountain, all of the Black Hills, have been permanently altered by white supremacists, which can't even be denied considering that the first lead sculptor was involved with the KKK and the second sculptor was his son.
