Can we please appreciate Odysseus being a silent stalker in the shadows, taking out suitors with his bow, not deigning to speak to them as he takes them out one by one
until some of them go "we have to strike him in the darkness too! we know the halls of this palace! the odds can be tilted!"
and Odysseus, built this palace with his very hands, has to step out of the shadows like "are you this fucking stupid"
I have the most urgent need to be insufferably over-educated. Like i need to read literally every book ever written.
henry and richard in another universe
was it casual when you shoved him off the cliff and then stood over his corpse watching the warmth and light slowly fade from his familiar blue eyes was it casual when his father said you made his son the happiest he'd ever seen his baby boy was it casual when his parents gave you the honor of being the pallbearer when you stood amongst his brothers and carried the corpse you'd made to the hollowed ground was it casual when you were so lost in your own mind standing above his grave that you smeared the dirt of his grave across your chest (you killed him. it doesn't mean you didn't love him.)
Something I just realized, Odysseus calls Telemachus by his name throughout Act I. Then when he get back to Ithaca, anytime he references Telemachus he calls him a familial title.
“… and hurt my boy”
“You plotted to kill my son”
“Son.”
“Oh my son look how much you’ve grown. Oh my boy, sweetest joy I’ve known.”
“My son I’m finally home!”
Then he calls his son by name while they embrace.
“Telemachus. I’m home.”
I just think it’s interesting. It’s like he’s reminding himself of what his son‘s name is throughout the Trojan War and his journey home.
When he gets back, he’s letting everyone know he’s claiming Telemachus, and reminding the suitors that Telemachus is his son, and he is Telemachus’ father.
Finally, the first time he calls Telemachus by his name, is after the two of them have rekindled their relationship. (I Can’t Help But Wonder is basically the two of them sharing how he views the other.)
