i wanna share with y'all a great thing that happened in my city yesterday. early in the morning, ICE tried to kidnap an undocumented man while he was leaving for work with his son in the car. this man had no warrant and no criminal record, and had lived in his home with his family for the past 14 years. these ICE agents, un-uniformed and in unmarked cars, blockaded this man’s driveway, while he and his child sat locked in their van, for 4 hours. (obviously this isn’t the good part.)
the man’s neighbors were the first to gather and confront ICE. phone calls were made, and dozens of local organizers, lawyers and activists showed up, in addition to more neighbors. they bought gas and siphoned it into the man’s car so he could keep the AC going. they passed water and food through the car windows. the city government was flooded with calls, and a few city council folks showed up in support of the man.
and ICE left.
the man’s neighbors & the activists formed a human chain around the car so the man and his son could get back into their house. and later, his whole family was escorted to a safer location.
today, that man is still with his family. his children, though undoubtedly shaken and scared (especially the son who was with him the whole time, and was so frightened he threw up at one point) still have their father. one of the neighbors said: “they picked the wrong neighborhood on the wrong day” and “I know they’ll be back, and so will we.”
I know a ton of posts get shared about doing this exact thing, but i want you to know that IT WORKS. community works. so please, above anything else, get to know your neighbors. keep an eye out for each other. don’t let people disappear. keep each other close, keep each other safe.

Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) have spent generations battling environmental injustices in their islands. Currently, there’s a fight to protect the sacred Mauna Kea volcano from the destructive Thirty Meter Telescope.
For nearly a decade, Native Hawaiians have fought the TMT - a $1.4 billion international science project - because its construction threatens to damage sacred land and fragile habitats on a summit that already houses other observatories.
Protestors have kept up grassroots resistance with legal challenges, physical road blockades, and social media campaigns. Although the latest legal decisions have voted in favor of the TMT, Native Hawaiians and allies aren’t giving up.

Annabeth knew she should be polite and deferential to Frank’s rank, maybe even apologize for her behavior that day on the training field. She had a second chance to improve the praetor’s initial impression of her, to charm him and get him on her side. She needed as many allies in high places as she could get in New Rome; Jason and Piper had impressed that much on her. Her friends would want her to be the bigger person.
But her smarting pride still hadn’t learned its lesson about patience and instead, she snapped, “Praetor Zhang. Steal anyone else’s training fields lately?”
Piper rolled her eyes. Well. There went being likeable.

mark it on the calendar, kids. it’s both annabeth’s birthday and the first time i’ve ever met a self-imposed deadline for writing fic. 🎉
I havent seen anyone talk about this yet so im making a post.
So lets say you’re researching something for a paper (or just for fun) and the research paper you want to read is behind a paywall, or the site makes you create a account first, or makes you pay to download, or limits you to only 5 free articles, or otherwise makes it difficult for you to read what you want.
do not fear! copy the link to the article
go to sci-hub.se (the url is always changing so its best to check out whereisscihub.now.sh to find what the current url is)
slap the article link in there
If ya have any percabeth fics i would love to read em been lookin for some good Percy jackson fics

there are several posts going around about how to best help if you witness an ICE raid/arrest as a (white) citizen. many of them are filled with extremely bad, LARP-y advice such as screaming at agents and getting physically close to them. in most cases, this is just going to make things worse for everyone at risk (including yourself). you need to stay calm, and avoid getting someone accused of resisting arrest.
to be clear: most of these fascists dont care about the law. “illegal” is not a magic word you can say to make them stop. and, being a white citizen is not an impenetrable shield. you can still be arrested, so be prepared for that. you are, however, less likely to be arrested, and MUCH less likely to be killed or held extralegally.
record, and make sure your phone auto-backups to a cloud. streaming can be problematic because its best to have lawyers look over the footage first. be aware they might also grab your phone, even without a warrant. if they’re grabbing it out of your hands, try to lock it. make sure you have a pin lock, not pattern or fingerprint. here’s some other ways to protect your phone from cops.
if you are able to film, and have determined it won’t escalate the situation, make it obvious you are doing so, because secretly recording is illegal in several states. narrate any violation of rights you see. here is a Q&A about filming ICE.
stay several feet back from agents, because they can claim you’re impeding them. if you’re recording and they claim this, take several steps back, and announce it as you’re doing so, if you’re filming.
ask if they are free to go, if someone is being approached. if ICE insists on the person asking for themself, and they speak spanish*, tell them “por favor repita: ‘am i free to go?’” (this just means “please repeat”) if the agent says yes, tell them “usted puede dejar”. if not..
calmly inform people of their rights if they are being arrested. they do not have to speak at all to agents, answer any questions without a lawyer, or sign anything. they do have to show their paperwork if they have it, but do NOT have to hand over the paperwork/passport, or consent to a search of themselves/belongings, without a judicial warrant (not administrative! here’s the difference). it is crucial that they give as little information as possible to ICE.
if you speak spanish, list their rights in spanish as well, and translate what the agents are saying. if not, keep the google translate app on your phone – it’s not perfect, but it’s quick/accessible and can download languages for offline use. you can also memorize this sentence: “no tiene que responder/dar su consentimiento” - “you dont have to respond/consent”
get their lawyer’s contact info, if they have one and are being taken away by ICE. many people carry a card with emergency contact info on it, including childcare info and loved ones, so you can offer to call those numbers for them.
call for legal help. do not call the ACLU or other big organizations for immediate help, call your local immigration help center (for New York State, contact IDP at 212-725-6422. for California, call the TRUST hotline at 844-878-7801). United We Dream is an immigrant-lead organization that provides aid nationwide, and can be reached at 844-363-1423. please save these numbers in your phone!
know the ICE rapid response network in your town, and keep their number on hand. if there isn’t one close to you, here’s how to make one.
finally, here are some useful toolkits:
comprehensive ICE response guide
know your rights posters for in-home raid readiness, community flyers, and informative videos
ACLU videos explaining what to do in various situations with ICE
*of course not every immigrant speaks spanish; people from south america are being targeted en masse right now, but may speak many indigenous languages as well as portuguese. so ask if you dont know what language someone speaks, and see if google translate can help.
If you haven’t heard there is a literal massacre going on in Sudan.

- Save The Children
Even if you can’t donate please help spread the news!!

Jason could lie and say everything is fine, but everyone knows at this point nothing is fine. What good would he be doing if he lies again?
Telling the truth impinges dangerously close to unearthing a labyrinth of secrets, a chest full of lies and betrayals that would surely make the team fall apart.
planning their next move
I usually walk everywhere with my headphones on, but I had them in my bag and I was reading a book on my phone instead (I do that when the foot traffic is light). A young Latina was coming down the street as I was coming up the avenue, and when she got to the corner a few paces ahead of me, she turned to walk in the direction I was going. We were traveling at the same speed, but since she was like ten paces ahead and it’s bright outside in the middle of the day, I didn’t feel the need to fall back or slow down to give her more space. At night, I try not to walk too close behind women just so they don’t feel like I’m any sort of threat.
We got to a corner and this dude standing outside of the bodega was like, “Slow down mama where you goin? You don’t have to work today, you can stop and speak.”
She didn’t break her stride. “I’m going to the gym.” The Walk sign was on, so I didn’t break mine either.
A block later, a young guy was coming toward us on the sidewalk riding his bike.
“What’s good shorty?”
She didn’t respond.
“Well you was lookin, you can say something, stuck up bitch.”
We kept walking.
In the middle of the next block, an older man was walking toward us and he put on a friendly smile and said, “Smile young lady, it’s a beautiful day.”
I don’t know if she smiled, but we kept walking. She went into the gym and I kept on toward where I was going thinking about how that was just five minutes of her day. How many other blocks of five minutes are just like that?
Only one of them was truly aggressive. The other two guys seemed nice enough and it felt more like a pleasant compliment. It felt like the kind of thing a guy says who argues with women online about catcalling. “We’re not all bad guys. We can’t even compliment women? We can’t even say something nice?”
No. You really can’t. I was annoyed in that five minutes and I just happened to be walking behind her with no headphones on. Can you imagine those five minutes over and over every day of your life? Nobody wants to be spoken to by strangers day in and day out forever regardless of what they’re saying.
So no. You can’t say anything. The quality of your life has not decreased because you aren’t allowed to say nice things to strange women on the sidewalk, but your silence greatly increases the quality of hers. So just be quiet, and let her go where she’s going.

Annabeth forgets that Percy is sleeping next to her.
Annabeth forgets that Percy is naked in the bed next to her.
Which is why, when she rolls over and runs into something solid and warm, she wakes herself with a yelp and half falls off the bed.
“Wuzza – ‘Beth?” Percy sits up, throws an arm around her waist, and hauls her back onto her bed. “Why are you slapping me awake?”
“I didn’t mean to,” she replies, feeling her face burn red. “I kind of forgot you were here.”

Piper brings Annabeth to the animal shelter where she volunteers. Annabeth falls in love with a puppy. Predictable fluff ensues.
~
“Oh,” says Annabeth, “oh, no.”
“See?” Piper says, and she hasn’t looked this happy in years. “There are so many puppies!”
Most of said puppies are crawling all over Piper, in her lap, in her shirt, chewing on her hair.
But there’s this one puppy, smaller and a little wobbly on its legs, that stumbles its way over to Annabeth. It has bright blue eyes and the sweetest little face she’s ever seen.
“Oh, no,” she repeats.

Storyville - Defying the Cutting Season
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been illegal in Tanzania since 1998. But every year thousands of families still plan to have their daughters cut, an ordeal that could cost them their lives. The ‘Cutting Season’ takes place during the December school holidays.
During this time hundreds of girls are saved from FGM by the police, the government and the work of the Safe House. It is run by Rhobi Samwelly, who was herself a victim of FGM, and now, not only does she valiantly run the safe house but she also works with the local police to rescue and protect girls at risk while arresting the parents and cutters.
But they have a tough and dangerous job and old customs die hard. Men believe that girls must be cut to reduce promiscuity and cut girls command twice the bride price in cows as uncut girls. Girls like Rosie, just 12 years old, have had to make the most difficult choices of their young lives - run away from home, not knowing if they will ever see their families again, or submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage.
These brave and courageous young girls are fighting against a tradition that goes back thousands of years. They are standing up for their human rights and fighting for change in their community.
The Safe House is the one safe place they can escape to.
Seven Seas of Rhye | (Chapter 4) Murphy’s Law
Some days, when Leo looks at Annabeth, he wonders if it is possible for someone to die and reanimate their own corpse.
Today is one of those days.
Her skin is ghostly pale in the lights of the bunker, her eyes — eyes that are framed by dark, heavy circles — are lifeless, unseeing, and her hair hangs limply around her face.
Her thumb picks at the ring on her left hand.

New York City is too far away right now; Percy doesn’t trust himself enough for a drive that long. Going to his mom’s isn’t an option.
The thought of distance brings up thoughts of Grover, who Percy has never missed more than he does in this moment. Grover, who doesn’t always know the right thing to say but always knows how Percy feels. He’d give anything to talk to him right now, but Grover is an ocean away and sound asleep.
There’s only one other place he can go.
“Men come West for one of two reasons, they’re looking for something, or something is looking for them. Which are you?”…
…“Looking for something,” he says.
The Sheriff tilts her head back, looking down her nose at him. “What’s your name.”
“Percy Jackson.”

This is the team Jason recognizes— the relentless, communicative, cooperative team that rightfully sits in first place in their league. This is the team he and Percy have led for the past several months. Although Beckendorf hasn’t come to any of their games, Jason likes to think this is the team their old captain would be proud of. As great as a captain Beckendorf had been, there’s no doubt that this season is better than their last. Jason knows this is a championship team.
There’s no reason for Chiron to worry about the team’s willingness to work together; the rule almost seems silly now. No romantic relationship has interfered with the team’s abilities before.
Everything goes smoothly until it doesn’t.
you’re a symphony (i’m just a sour note) chapter 1
by @jasonsmclean
The room is filled with noise, the sound of string instruments being played consuming all other sounds. There’s the occasional shuffling of sheet music, or the frustrated sigh, and whispers lie just beneath the peaceful hum of music. It’s a comforting loudness, one that would soothe over any stressed soul.
Once the clock hits six, silence takes over the once pleasantly noisy room. It’s almost ominous, the hearing equivalent of watching clouds cover the sun. A hush falls over the musicians, putting their instruments in resting position, their expectant eyes immediately focusing on the black-haired conductor in front of them.
Only Reyna isn’t ordering them to pull out a particular piece yet. Her eyes stare at the clock, almost in disbelief that the time has the audacity to hit six. By the time a minute passes, the orchestra shifts uncomfortably because Reyna never starts practice late. It’s evident nobody knows why she hasn’t started.
Jason knows. He can’t help but to look past Reyna at Annabeth, who has an emotionless look on her face. “He’s late,” he informs her.

Deregulation strikes again.
“Free market” capitalism does NOT care about raging forest fires, it does not care about endangering firefighters, it does not care about people dying due to lack of healthcare insurance. Unregulated capatilism cares only about making profits, apparently at any and all costs.
