A/N: His face card was so lethal it wasn't affected by the transformation at all.
Hoping to find a cure for Vander, you joined Jinx, Vi, and Isha on a journey to locate this infamous "Herald" deep within the heart of Zaun. Youâd come across his name multiple times and had finally decided to give it a shot.
What could go wrong, right?
But the place was nothing like the dark, grotesque pit like it once was. No, it was quite the opposite. This was a sanctuary, a heaven in Runeterra.
Colorful and circular patterns spread across the whole area, as though resembling the process of cell division.
You couldnât explain it, but something about the entire situation felt off.
In the center of the commune stood a massive circular shed. Its walls bore the same patterns that decorated everything around it, only larger. It was impossible to ignore that this was where the Herald residedâhis place of authority.
You all made your way to it, waiting in silence for him to appear.
And he stepped out.
His figure was thin, a combination of metal in shades of purple and black covering his entirety. Yet, strangely, his face was the only part left untouched. He wore a blue robe that almost dragged along the ground with every step, his hair streaked with white at the ends brushing past his shoulders.
"Viktor...?" The name escaped your lips before you could stop it, and you froze.
The figure before you was someoneâor somethingâyou never thought you would see again. Your heart raced, unable to make sense of what your eyes were seeing.
Was this really him? The man you once knew now hidden beneath the skin of metal. His presence was familiar, yet he was someone entirely different.
It couldnât be. No, there was no way this was him.
"It's good to see you again," he said, his voice devoid of expression. "State your purpose."
Your heart sank at his words and the tone of his voice, your mouth slightly fell agape. You hated how it lacked acknowledgment, how he couldnât even bother to say your name.
It was clear he didnât care about seeing you again, and right now, you were nothing more than a visitor.
Before he met you, Viktorâs dreams revolved solely around science, the progress of the city, and leaving a legacy. But with you, his ambitions became something simpler. Something human.
He began to dream of things he once thought were beyond him. Like marriage and the idea of creating a family to call his own. But those dreams remained unspoken. He was too afraid to voice them, fearing they might scare you, or worse, shatter the perfect balance between you two.
After all, the thought terrified him just as much as it might have you.
Yet words had never been necessary. You were inseparable, bound by something unsaid but undeniable. To anyone who saw you together, the conclusion was always the same: You were more than friends.
Two souls so intertwined that the line between had blurred, connected by strings purely from the veins that built the two of you. You were practically lovers, just too afraid to admit it even to yourselves.
The explosion at the council had truly taken him from you, or at least the version of him you once knew. All that remained was this cold stranger, and the realization hurt you more than you would like to admit, leaving a void in your heart where love once bloomed.
Before you could gather your thoughts, Vi spoke up, explaining the reason for your visit. But you couldnât tear your eyes away from him, memories from a year ago rushing back just before he vanished.
"Please... You've just been brought back to life. You have to stay with me, Viktor..." Your voice cracked as you added, "What about us?"
Viktor was momentarily stunned by your words, stopping in his tracks as soon as he heard them. He turned to face you, his eyes lacking their spark. Your anxiety rose under his gaze as he uttered words you never imagined would ever escape his lips.
"Was there ever an us?"
The sting of his question lingered in your chest. You couldnât follow him, not after that. Thatâs when you let him go, and you never saw him again.
Without a word, you walked away, leaving them to their conversation. Jinx gave you a puzzled look but didnât bother to follow. You could feel Viktorâs gaze following you as well, and it felt as though it was burning your skin.
You sat down by a fruit vendor, who offered you a piece after noticing the look on your face. "Thank you," you murmured.
Where you sat wasnât too far from them. You could still see them, but their words were no longer audible.
You watched Viktor. He looked healthy now, but could he truly be considered healthy if he wasnât even human anymore? Sure, the limp was gone, and the pain he once wore due to his illness was nowhere to be found.
But those were the details that made him human. Those imperfections were the ones you always found beautiful. They were what made Viktor, well, Viktor.
You were relieved he no longer had to suffer, but seeing him replaced by this almost emotionless being broke your heart.
You took a bite of the fruit, its sweetness doing little to ease the knot in your stomach. You watched them as a few more minutes passed. Then the sisters and Isha finally drifted away from Viktor, Vander following him toward a shed away from the others.
Jinx skipped over to you. "Ask for a miracle healer, get a metal fortune cookie," she quipped.
Vi rolled her eyes, her hands stuffed in her pockets as she ignored her sister's blabbering. "Whatâs going on? You know that guy?"
You exhaled, cheeks puffing up as you tried to find the words. "Honestly? I donât think I do anymore." You shook your head, struggling to explain. "But we used to be... Uh... We were..."
Vi chuckled, sitting down next to you. "I think I know what you mean," she said with a cheeky smile. "Too bad weâll probably have to stay here for a couple of days."
Indeed, days had passed. You spent them mingling with the members of the commune, listening to their stories and hearing them recall their life experiences. Every answer circled back to praise for Viktor, voices filled with devotion as they spoke of how he saved them.
You couldnât help but smile at their words. This was what Viktor always dreamed ofâto help the people of Zaun, to ease their endless suffering.
But in pursuing that dream, he had lost you. And perhaps himself.
You avoided interacting with him, focusing instead on Vanderâs progress. Viktor was patient with the creature Vander had become, more patient than you expected.
At least that part of him remained intact. At least he was still the same caring Viktor in some way, you thought to yourself.
You let out a laugh as you scooped Isha into your arms, lifting her high into the air. Her giggles filled the commune as you tossed her upward and caught her again.
She clung to you between laughter, arms raised. The joy on her face was so contagious that you couldnât help but laugh with her, your heart swelling with nothing but happiness.
Viktor lingered behind a wall, his frame half-hidden but still visible. Just watching.
He couldnât tear his gaze away. Seeing you with Isha simply enchanted him, and it made him feel something he hadnât in a long time.
Paternal.
He had once dreamed of moments like this. Though, they didnât consume his thoughts fully, but they lingered as what-ifs.
There were days when he imagined you carrying a child you had created together, soft laughter and lullabies echoing through the living room of the home he built for you.
In those visions, he saw himself holding your child while standing by your side, mouthing words like, "Say, 'Papa,'" as if a two-month-old infant could already talk.
At that moment, those dreams seemed to mock him. As he observed you lovingly holding Isha, a part of that dream reignited in his heart. And for a moment, his lips curved into the smallest of smiles. It was so faint it almost wasnât even there. It caught him off guard. That smile didnât come from logic or the machine. It came from somewhere else. Some part of him that still felt... still longed.
A part of him that's you. His humanity.
He blinked, letting the feeling slip away. Whatever part of him that still hoped for that life wasnât meant to exist here.
Not with what heâd become. Not ever.
He stepped back, retreating to his shed. He would leave things as they were.
For your sake. For his own.
Because some dreams were simply kinder left untouched.
Hi there đ,
My name is Mohammad, a father of three young children living in Gaza. We are facing unimaginable hardships due to the ongoing catastrophic war, and our home is no longer safe. Iâve started a fundraising to raise $40,000 to move my family to a safer place where my children can have a chance at a better future. đđ
If you could spare a moment to read our story and consider donating or even sharing, it would mean the world to us. Every bit of support brings us closer to safety and hope. đ
Thank you for your kindness and compassion. â€
https://gofund.me/fd1faea2 đ
I know that this isnât my usual thing to post, but every single bit of attention this post gets matters!! The one-sided war going on in Palestine the past 3/4 of a century has affected the live of everyone in Gaza. Thereâs a famine, scarcity of available resources. Those who have been massacred, and killed by the IDF have mostly been women and children. Iâve seen news about a new father being delivered the birth certificates of his twin children, and the death certificates of his twin children, wife, and mother-in-law.
This has always been a very serious issue, and with this post I hope that you take the time and consideration to read and share, and donate to Mohammad and his familyâbut not just them, but to many others as well who are suffering the same fate. These are innocent people dying at the hands of the IDF. An ethnic cleansing is happening right now, a genocide. If you watched Katniss Everdeen fight and rage war against her own government, why are you turning a blind eye to it now?
Please, please, please help Mohammad! Although I cannot donate to him, I will help share his story. đđ
SCRUMPTIOUS I TELL YOU!! I always come back to this one cause gods đ«
Arcane requests you say đ hmm...how about a Viktor x Reader with reader as an empress/queen visiting Piltover to learn about Hextech and falls for a certain scientist?
sowwy this is a month late but i rewrote it like three times!!
âYou love this, hmm?â Viktor rasps, his teeth grazing over your jaw, âRoyalty being taken apart by some lowlife from the Undercity?â
His teeth bite down right below your jaw, hard enough that you know it will bruise. Your brow creases in frustration.Â
âI find that talk deeply unattractive, Viktor,â you tell him, your posh accent never wavering, âYouâre a son of Zaun, and youâre going to save my people after your own.â
Thats how it began, truly, as something much more noble and innocent. You had shown up to the council room draped in silver a newly crowned young queen from a far off land, shimmering as your quiet voice asked for representatives of Zaun. As it turns out, your father had let innovation move too quickly, and factory smoke now choked yourself and your people. Your downfall is your own, unlike the downfall Piltover had thrust upon Zaun. No one had spoken up at first, and some councillors had even averted their gaze. But all it took was one look, and Jayce had quickly volunteered his partner, whether he wanted to be brought forth or not.Â
An hour later, he found himself in the lab, you folded up sitting on top of one of the tables with your legs under you and your dress bunched up on your knees as you picked his brain about how Hextech could be used in air purification, and the topic of Zaun and your kingdomâs survival would be intertwined as youâd throw any supplies or funds needed their way without a thought. You promised them the world, a flirty smile thrown Viktorâs way as you did so.Â
Another hour later, he finds himself here. Snug between your thighs with the material of your dress now wrinkled against his waist, his hands in your hair and a ridiculous amount of silver jewelry discarded in a pile beside you on the table as his cane rests precariously on the back of his chair.Â
âAh yes, you wish to see things as you want to, not as they are,â he teases, âOf course, your Majesty.â
This only further infuriates you, as you dig your heel into his ass to pull him even closer to you, grinding down onto him as your lips reclaim his own. You bite, two can play at that game, and drag your hands across the back of his vest.Â
âI see you as you are,â you say, exasperation and annoyance not hidden in your tone, but anything you were about to say gets cut off, a moan interrupting your thoughts. Viktor seizes the opportunity to thrust his tongue into your mouth, silencing anything besides the pretty moans that he licks from you.Â
He cannot pinpoint what started this: your lingering looks as your honeyed words dripped silver onto him, or the hunger that sparked in his fingers with the way you spoke of Zaun in reverence and hope. Maybe it was him, actually, with the way you had practically pounced on him the moment there was quiet in your otherwise very spirited conversation.Â
But he canât think about that right now, not when youâre licking his pulse point and your deft fingers are working at the buttons of his shirt.
Until Jayce opens the door, and you pick yourself up off of his lap and back into your own chair. If his partner was surprised by this turn of events, he doesnât show it.
Viktor doesnât miss the mischief in your eyes when your eyes meet his again.Â
Days pass in the lab, but the fire between the two of you never subsides. Itâs everything, the way he runs his fingers through his hair, the way he gets so engrossed in a logistical issue, the way he and Jayce work so fluidly with one another. Everything about the Zaunite drives you wild.Â
It makes you almost preen with pride, the way the two of them look at you every time you up their budget or tell them to try it. You know Piltoverâs council has a budget for them, but with no limits? They are working harder and working faster than they have in years, as theyâve told you. Itâs easily intoxicating, the enthusiasm and pure joy between the two of them, the way they share it with you, the way it wafts through the room. Mel Medarda floats in and out, and she too is drawn in by the excitement. Your reserved penthouse is neglected, as you spend most of your time here, your royal guards and servants given time off with a budget to explore the city as you become more and more enraptured into their work.Â
âAnd different alloys, they affect how the hexgems output energy, yes?â you ask, and the men respond in turn, âIâll figure out how cheap I can make a workable alloy so that Zaunites and my people alike can all afford it.â
You say it so easily, because it is easy for you. Youâre glad your brother stepped aside. Raised as the Infanta, you expected your only aptitude to be valued in a marriage bed. Your crown prince brother a gambler and cruel hearted, but not stupid, realized quickly the crown was not for him. His crown for a lifetime salary was an easy choice. You had always excelled in lessons, had always been the messenger and wine pourer during your fatherâs meetings with his council. You had been raised a sharp politician despite the fact that it was never meant for you. To think, had he been selfish in another way, you would have never seen this.Â
Now youâre excited, a real opportunity to change things within your grasp. Your partnership with Hextech is clearly advantageous for your kingdom, however thats not the part of it that excites you the most.Â
Viktorâs hand falls upon your thigh, his calloused palm against the lace of your dress. The movement is absentminded, as if heâd done it a million times, as if the movement is natural. Oh! Your cheeks heat up in a way that feels immature, only worsened by the way that he only smirks and goes back to the conversation with Jayce, as if his action is commonplace. All thoughts are silenced besides this feeling.Â
The more you get to know the men of progress, the more you struggle to understand why they are so underutilized. Piltover and Zaun could be at peace in literal hours with their ideas. But you know politics, and you know no one spoke for them before Jayce. He doesnât belong on the council, you think, not because he isnât worth the merit but because he is wasted there when he can do this here. Viktor is a mad genius, wild but subdued, fanatic but contained, chaos wrapped in a soft tone.Â
The days run long, and you bring Viktor back to your penthouse with the promise of sleep.
Sleep does not come, at least not before you do.Â
âIâm only a twelve hour ride away in an airship,â you tell him, his lips dragging across your bare back. He kisses along every inch of skin he can reach, the moonlight the only source to illuminate his path.Â
âAnd when do I go on this royal journey?â he teases, his hand firm as he drags it up your hip to settle at your waist.Â
âWhenever it suits you,â you whisper, now closer as you claim a kiss from him.
âWhen it suits me,â he repeats, his tone hard to decipher.Â
âViktor,â you start, sitting up. Viktor shifts instantly with you, hanging off of your shoulder now as his arms circle your waist and pull you in.
âI am not making you,â you mumble, confidence fading away with each passing second that Viktor doesnât speak. His head falls to rest against yours, lets out a deep sigh you feel more than hear.Â
âI want to come visit you, often if possible,â he admits, his lips close to your ear. Warmth blooms in your chest as you turn in his grasp, your noses bumping together as you meet his gaze.
âYou do?â
âCome into my lap,â he tells you, and you crawl over his frame to straddle his thin thighs. The sheets pool around your hips, exposing you to the moonlight. It feels a lot like the first night, all unsure and needing hands, all limbs feeling numb and weird and wanting.Â
Viktorâs lips find yours, warm and pressing and harsh and clumsy. He kisses into your mouth with fervor and ferocity. His teeth graze and bump your lips, bruising and biting and sure to leave scarring and you return it in kind. It is less a dance of mouths, more an awkward sparring, but it fills you with heat just the same. His hands move down your body, pulling and grasping and squeezing at your hips, your thighs, your ass.Â
âBe careful,â you whisper, pressing your chest to his, âI may just try and keep you.â
Viktor chuckles, and lays back against the mattress. You follow him enthusiastically.
I remember now. In my own little sad delusion, reader keeps the ring and wears it all the time on the precious finger meant for a special someone. If asked about it sheâd say her fiancĂ© made it for her/or alternatively if she feels too guilty for even claiming Viktor as her fiancĂ© she says a close friend of hers made it.
I feel as if though sheâd never marry and keep to herself, letting herself reflect and her guilt and dark thoughts shift as she grieves him. The sad memories become one that she smiles at again. She visits his grave and talks to him on a daily basis, updating him on her daily life. But she would never seek the affection of someone else as he holds her heart in his hands, and he doesnât even know it yet.
Sheâd work a normal life, just like sheâd used to. Hex tech completely lost and forgotten as Jayce destroyed it, no longer letting the lingering thoughts of expanding its use cloud his mind. Heâll eventually confine in reader and ask him about their past in which they bond over that. As the years go by they become friends that share a mutual friend.
Jayce eventually asks about the ring, thinking sheâd moved on only come to find out that it was made by yours truly. Reader shares the memory of what happened with a sad smile.
âAfter all those years I thought heâd forgotten about me. Turns out he didnât. Lover boy just kept his feeling for me bottled up, and didnât even tell me. Not until I caught him drunk with SkyâŠâ she sighs, nimble fingers playing with the ring that adorned her finger.
The ring. A symbol of what they meant to each other. First loves. Childhood friends. Family.
âMakes you wish you could reverse time and take it all back. But you canât, and now I have to live with that darned memory.â
âTo be fair, I donât think he ever forgave himself for that. If he was still here, and the both of you had married, Iâd bring that memory up all the time and tease him about it. Heâs probably rolling in his grave right now.â Jayce chuckled and pat her shoulder.
She smiled and slipped the ring off. She handed it to him to observe. The inside of it had their names carved into it, albeit messily. The familiar handwriting of the once scientist they knew and cared for.
âHad we married Iâd have taken his name. No one in Zaun has a last name. I didnât think there was a need for them, and I still donât. But if Iâm being honest right now, having the name heâd come up with would be a big deal for me.â
âYou know I never asked him what his name was. Iâd written it down as a reminder but it slipped my mind. If you donât mind me asking, why do people from the undercity not have last names?â The man had scratched the back of his nape.
âI donât know. It could be because we arenât people of status, but it didnât matter to us. But having one⊠itâs intimate. Knowing you share a last name with someone means a lot. Whether youâre married, or adopted into a family, it means that youâre loved, and youâre intertwined in that love.â She smiled at him.
âMoss agate?!? Whyâd he choose that as the stone?â
She chuckled and leaned over to caress the ring. âMoss agate⊠is fueled with a lot of meaning. Abundance, prosperity, and new beginnings.â
âWhen we were younger, Viktor was the odd one out. Even in Zaun being different was the easiest way to be singled out. His cane caused him to be looked down upon. Itâs not his fault, I donât know how us children survived down there.â
âI didnât even realize that I was his only friend, it only occurred to me a few days later after I saw him down by our spot bright and early. Only thing with him was his cane, the boat, and a few other tools and scraps of gears.â
âI didnât ask him, nor tell him that I knew he was alone, but I think he knew I found out that same moment we locked eyes. He grew a bit flustered but that was all.â She snorted as she imagined his full face growing embarrassed.
âHe was mainly quiet unless I asked him about what he was going to make next. Heâd usually just listen to me yap about what was going on. It was mainly about what I saw at Vanderâs bar, The Last Drop.â She plucked the ring out of Jayces grasp and slipped it back on.
It was slightly tight but she wasnât going to go ahead and modify it. She loved the simple ring as it was, in all it imperfections because it came from the one person sheâd always love.
âIt looks like he always had an abundance of love for me no matter how far apart we were. In his journal, he kept a newspaper clipping of me. He wrote sweet nothings on that page dedicated to me. âSo proud of you,â âknew you could make it,â things like that.â She kept the more heartfelt words to herself.
âWho knew he was such a sap.â Jayce jibbed, a small smile gracing his lips.
âWhen we were younger, he always thought highly of me. He knew that Iâd become who I am now in Piltover. Even when I didnât believe in myself, heâd always think of me as bright.â
âWhen we met Singed⊠everything changed. We were always friends and nothing would ever change that, but Singed thought of me as a distraction to Vik. â
âYou shouldâve seen his pouty face. I could tell he took offense, and though it did sting to hear that about myself I swallows my feelings down. Viktor was about to stand up for me but this was his chance to.. well⊠get out of there.â
âWait so thatâs who he was talking about?â Jayce screeched.
âTalking about who? Singed?â
âYeah, he was trying to tinker with the hex core, but said heâd consult with someone he knew. Ultimately, he said he never went through with the deal.â
âMhm. After a failed experiment, Viktor didnât trust him after that. He came to me a bit upset, but bottled his feelings up just so that he wouldnât sour the mood for me.â
âItâs one of the last few conversations we had with each other before he left to the topside. After that you know how it goes.â
âI canât dwell on the past. Whatâs happened, happened. But it doesnât stop anything from hurting.â She looked up at Jayce with tears in her eyes and wiped them as they cascaded down her cheeks.
âIs it selfish of me to want to go back in time and keep him from reaching his dream of becoming something bigger in Piltover? Keep him from meeting singed? Keep him from leaving?â
âMaybe a little.â He jested. It bought a soft snort out of her.
âMaybe then weâd make it together, without having to be separated, to stay together. Move in together, get proposed to, plan for the big day, spend the rest of our lives together, possible start a family. Maybe heâd still be here, with usâŠâ she choked down a sob.
âThere no guarantee for that outcome. We started Hextech for that reason andâŠâ he trailed off.
âDo you think in another lifetime.. heâs alive and well? Happy?â
âI do, but I know that heâs beating himself up right now seeing you cry because of him.â
âHe never was a fan of me crying over him. Even when we were younger heâd always try his best to cheer me up and make up with me. Heâd even let me do his hair as I pleased.â She sniffled.
âAnything for his girl.â Jayce rubbed circles on her shoulder as she curled into his warm embrace, needing the consoling.
âAnything for me.â
Part 1. Part 2.
Summary: A childhood friendship between Viktor and you grow into unspoken love, but your paths diverge when Viktor left you behind. Still heartbroken, you unexpectedly reunite during Progress Day after years, only to cause more heartbreak.
Pairing: Viktor Arcane X Female Reader, she/her pronouns
Warnings: ANGST, death, made up last name for Viktor, no mentions of Y/N.
Words: 6.3k
A/N: I really hope you like how this ended as much as I did! And thank you so much for 1k followers! I went from 600 to 1.1k in a span of 3 days đ Y'all are crazy for the viktorussyyy
The rain fell in relentlessly. Each droplet is a cold mnemonic of the rage and fear in your heart after what you just saw. The same droplets pressed Viktor's hair against his forehead and ran down his hollow cheeks like tears he was unable to shed. It was enough to sober him up.
You strode down the cobblestone street, footsteps splashing into shallow puddles of water. Viktor's irregular steps resonated behind you, his walking stick struggled to grip the slippery surface. He looked utterly lost. Vulnerable. A man stripped of his intellect. It reflected the agitation within him, but he didn't care if he'd stumble to the ground again and let the pavement scratch his skin just to catch you. Not right now. âWould you please stop walking away and talk to me?!â The loudness of his voice broke through the roaring storm, piercing its way through the wind to envelop you.
You froze mid-step, shoulders tensing as if his words had hit you physically. His words worsened the anger inside you. You kept on moving, the rain blurring your vision.
âPlease!â he called again, and this time, the pain in his voice drew you back, completely halting you in your tracks. You turned sharply, water splashing from your drenched clothing, it mirrored the landslide of emotions breaking free from inside of you. Your chest heaved with each breath; tears mixed with the rain as you locked onto Viktor's gaze. His eyes were filled with desperation, glowing like orange lanterns in the middle of this storm. âMe?!â You sneered, a sense of bitterness lingering in the atmosphere. âYouâre seriously the one talking about walking away? About communication?! Do you even hear yourself, Viktor?!â You stepped closer to his face, voice rising. You could see each detail of his face now; their beauty remains evident even amid all the gloom, but you didn't let them distract you. âDid you forget what you did? Or have you just convinced yourself they didn't matter?â Viktor flinched, as if each word was an arrow pointed straight to his heart. He opened his mouth, only to close it again, shame smothering him in the silence.
âI remember,â he said after the pause, his tone careful. âI remember everything. I remember them every single day.â You laughed, âOh, do you? Then you must recall leaving without so much as a word. Treating me like I was a puzzle to solve only to discard me as soon as I didnât align with your bigger plan!â Your voice cracked, the hurt threatening to overflow like the rain around you. âLike I was disposable...â His breath hitched, shaking his head in disagreement with what you had said. His grip on his cane tightening until his knuckles turned white. âYou were never disposableââ
"Then why did you make me feel like so?" You cut him off.
Viktor paused, taking a small time to take in the look in your face caused by his actions. âI just... I thought⊠I thought I was doing the right thing. That if I let you go, I couldââ He halted, words choking him. âI thought it would protect you. That you would be safer. Happier without me.â âProtect me?â you mocked, almost closing the distance. âYou hurt me, Viktor! You didnât protect me! You shattered me!â
You thought his response was completely ridiculous. But did you genuinely believe that thought? It was clear that your anger is distorting your perspective again. Still, you have every right to feel that way. His face crumpled as your words struck home, his free hand reaching for you but stopping, trembling. âI know,â he said hoarsely. âI know what I did to you. Thereâs no excuse, no justification that could ever make it right. But please⊠please let me try to explain.â
"Just go easy on him, alright? Heâs not great at these things." Jayce's words echoed in your thoughts, bringing back the image of Viktor coughing and bleeding. You never wanted to imagine it again. It felt as though it was your own care and affection for Viktor reaching out to you, urging you to truly listen to him. That beneath the anger, your love for him that had never fully disappeared was talking to you.
âGo ahead, then. Explain. Tell me why it was okay to tear my heart apart and just let me live with it.â You crossed your arms tightly over your chest, feeling a chill that were more from the sight of him rather than from the cold air.
He took a cautious step forward, but this time you didn't pull back. Youâre closer to him than ever before that you can smell his musky scent, so close that you can nearly tune into his thoughts and feel the rhythm of his heartbeat. His eyes filled with vulnerability, and deep inside you can feel them pinching your heart.
âI was a fool,â he began, briefly looking down before focusing on your gaze once more. âI- I told myself I was being selfless, letting you go for your sake. But the truth is, I was terrified of what you made me feel. As we grew older, it also grew more seriously inside me. That scared me. I was scared that those emotions would derail me from dreams. Dreams that I would sacrifice my life for. And I was a coward for that."
His words were like a glimpse of hope in your confusion. You could sense how heavy they were and almost feel his struggle. But then, Viktor paused, remembering another mistake he had made.
âWhat you saw up there⊠with Sky... I am so sorry. I was drunk. No, I am drunk.â Viktor chuckled and scratched his head, feeling embarrassed as he recalled his recent actions. âI thought I saw you. I thought it was you kissing me.â He took a deep, shaky breath. âBut it wasnât you. It was her. It was a mistake, a horrible mistake, and it hurts me to know that I let myself forget you for even a moment. I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted anyone else, not after what we shared. I was trying to make myself feel something, anything, other than the pain of losing you. But all I did was make everything worse.â
This hit you deeply, making your chest feel tight, but it wasnât enough. You still had barriers up, barriers that Viktor's words had not yet broken through.
As his words lingered in the air, your emotions swirled. You're still hurt, but you were validated. You couldn't put it into words, but the next words that came out of Viktor's mouth were both surprising and somehow anticipated.
He hesitated, eyes filled with everything he had kept inside. âI have struggled... in vain,â he began, âIâve fought against this... against you. But I can bear it no longer..."
Countless thoughts raced through your mind as you tried to predict Viktor's next words while allowing him to keep speaking.
"The past years have been nothing but torment. I thought I was doing the right thing. I only intended to protect you.â His voice faltered as he took a step closer, as if you two weren't already close enough. His gaze softened, searching yours. âBut I was wrong.â
Viktor cupped your face gently, his hands fitting the curves of your skin as if they were meant to be there, as if the Gods made them to touch you in this way. Every delicate contour of your facial structure seemed to align perfectly with each line of his palms, like another way of promising you his love if not through words.
His hands remained steady against your skin to which you subconsciously leaned onto, eyes fluttering closed as you exhaled softly. "Viktor, please..."
His touch soothed the storm inside you. So intimate, so real.
You waited for him to speak again, breath caught in your chest.
Viktor swallowed hard as the words finally came out, tears gathering around his eyes. âPlease, end my agony... I... I love you.â
Those three words struck you like a speeding bullet train, each one ringing in your chest. They were impossible to ignore. His touch, his wordsâthey were enough to lift the burden you carried for years.
But even with that weight gone, there was still something else lingering deep inside you.
Doubt.
The kind of doubt that was seeded long ago, as though it was permanent. The kind that couldnât be erased with just three words, no matter how heartfelt they are.
You smiled, but it wasnât the smile Viktor hoped for. It wasnât the soft, tender response he had imagined after pouring his heart out to you.
No, it was something else. It was a smile that spoke more of deflection. The kind of smile that said, 'nice try'. The kind that concealed the sensitivity still flowing within you, and beneath that, a hint of doubt.
"If you really love me then you shouldn't have left me."

The weeks that followed were unfriendly to Viktor, as if the universe had conspired to reflect the torture he felt inside.
He buried himself in his research, and the lab became more of a prison than a shelter. The spark of his amber eyes has now been replaced by a hollow stare of sleepless nights.
The edges of his frame were frail. His already lean figure was exposed, with skin appearing even more pale. Dark circles etched themselves under his eyes and bruises of his own making from the nights he spent pouring every inch of his body into the study instead of rest.
His lips, once soft and quick to curl upward into a smile, are now chapped and pushed into a line. Clothes hung loosely over him, and the fabric of his coat looked heavier than the man wearing it. As he coughed, a deep, ragged sound would scrape off of his lungs, with random nose bleeds occurring here and thereâJayce noticing even more crimson specks smearing his handkerchief.
Still, Viktor dismissed everyone.
He denied recognizing the physical impact his work had on him and dismissed the worries with a feigned nonchalance. Now, his focus was singular: perfecting his research and proving that his sacrifice was not in vain.
But his hands trembled day by day, and the tension of lifting his tools became almost impossible. The recognizable sound of his cane hitting the floor now stands as a touching reminder of his deteriorating health.
à Ë.âșâč .á
For several weeks, the rain kept pouring. It seemed like the weather understood your and Viktor's feelings.
You were savoring a warm cup of tea when gentle knocks vibrated at your door.
You hesitated before answering. Upon opening it, Sky stood there, drenched and shivering. Her eyes red as though she had been crying.
You gripped the doorframe, eyes rolling and your jaw clenching. âWhat do you want?â you asked coldly, the sight of her bringing back memories that you're still trying to forget.
Sky fidgeted, fingers twisting together nervously. âLook, I know Iâm the last person you want to see right now,â she began, her voice barely audible over the rain. âBut I need to talk to you. Please. Itâs about Viktor.â
Just hearing his name triggered an unwelcome pain that cut through the walls of your living room. You moved to close the door, unwilling to entertain whatever she had to say, but her hand shot out, gripping it with strength that caught you off guard.
"Excuse me?" You scoffed.
She cried out, âPlease, just hear me out. I wouldnât be here if it wasnât important.â
Ugh.
With hesitation, you moved aside and nodded you head toward the living room for her to enter, your arms crossed as you observed her walk into your house. Her wet clothes left a trail of water on the floor, but she seemed oblivious, her focus entirely on you. She looked smaller than you remembered, her confidence was replaced by an almost childlike vulnerability.
âIâm really sorry,â she said, adjusting her glasses. âFor everything. For the kiss⊠for the way I acted. I didnât mean for any of it to happen.â
For the second time today, you rolled your eyes, lips curled into a bitter smile. âIs that why youâre here? To apologize? I've been trying to erase that from my memory, so if you're just here to remind me about it then please, feel free to leave.â
Sky shook her head no, hands clenching into fists at her sides. âNo. I- Iâm not here to make excuses. I know what I did was wrong, and I know how much it hurt you. But you need to know the truth.â She took a shaky breath, her eyes meeting yours with a sincerity that was almost uncomfortable. âIâve liked Viktor for as long as I can remember. For years, I thought⊠I thought maybe he could feel the same way about me because we're always together. But that night⊠that kiss⊠I know he wasnât thinking of me.â Her voice broke and she looked away, cheeks flushing with shame. âHe was thinking of you."
Yeah, I know.
Her words lingered, combining affirmation and hurt. âIs that why youâre here?â you asked, your tone sharp. âTo tell me that Viktor loves me? I- How do you even know me?â
Skyâs eyes filled with tears, her composure finally breaking.
âNo,â she whispered. âIâm here because Viktor is dying.â
Viktor is dying.
The words played over and over in your mind. They are louder each time, drowning out everything else. The idea of losing him permanently this time made your stomach twist painfully. Tears threatened to spill, but you fought hard to blink them away.
Viktorâs âI love you," from a few weeks ago came back to your senses. They were never quite enough to erase all the anger, pain, and doubt he had left behind. Those three words were supposed to heal, but they didnât; they couldnât. They werenât strong enough to undo the hurt.
But now, this another set of three words hit you harder than you thought possible. They werenât warm or hopeful. They didnât carry promises of love or second chances.
Yet somehow, they did what his âI love youâ couldnât.
Those three words, so opposite in meaning, tore through every bitter thought and resentment you held.
All they left behind was the truth that none of the hurt mattered anymore.
None.
You couldnât lose him. Not now. Not like this.
Sky's words stole the air from your lungs. âW- what?â you managed to choke out.
Sky took a step closer, seemingly wanting to offer you some comfort. âHeâs in the hospital. Jayce took him there after he collapsed. He⊠heâs not doing well.â
You wanted to say something, anything, but your thoughts were in a tangle of mess. Words failed you as you reached for your coat, the overwhelming need to get to Viktor as soon as possible overriding everything else.
You were halfway to the door, hand trembling on the handle, when Skyâs voice broke through your chaotic blur. âWait⊠before I forget,â she said, the tone almost nervous.
You turned to face her, your impatience barely masked. Sky fumbled through her bag, pulling out a small blue leather-bound notebook. Its edges scuffed, and its cover worn with age. Her hands were shaking as she extended it toward you.
âThis is his,â Sky spoke gently, her voice shaking in a way that reflected the quiver of her hands. âWhen Viktor left it on his table, I⊠I opened it. It was a few years ago. I wasnât trying to invade his privacy. I was just looking for research notes, trying to understand what he was working on. But I found this instead.â
You paused, gazing at the notebook as if it were delicate. "Whatâs this?" you inquired, voice softer than you meant it to be. Your brows knitted together in confusion, questioning why she felt it was so important to hand this to you right now when every second counted.
We don't have time for this.
Sky looked down, as if she couldnât bear to meet your eyes. Her fingers lingered on the edge of the notebook before letting it go, pressing it into your hands. âItâs⊠itâs about you,â she admitted. âYou asked me how I know about you, right? This is why. Just⊠just read it when you can. Youâll understand.â
For a moment, the room was silent except for the muffled rain against your windows. You looked down at the notebook in your hands, its weight suddenly heavier than it had any right to be. Brushing the worn edges, your mind buzzed with questions you didnât have the time or courage to ask.
What could possibly be in here that Sky believed you needed to see?
But there wasnât any time to dwell on it now. The fear in your chest wouldnât let you linger in here any longer.
Viktor's dying, and every second wasted felt like a step closer to losing him.
You clutched the notebook tightly before leaving it on your coffee table, a strange feeling of hope in your gut.
Whatever it contained, it could wait.
Right now, there was only one thing that mattered. You had to get to him.
The journey to the hospital seemed to stretch endlessly, with each second feeling longer than the one before. What should have been a simple fifteen-minute ride felt like it took forever. It was as if the outside world had faded away, leaving only the chaos in your head.
Your eyes were fixed on nothing, your focus lost while the unrelenting motion of the Piltover transport only made your anxiety worse. A heavy dread weighed on you, as if something terrible was already unfolding and you were already too late.
At last, the vehicle stopped.
As soon as it did, you bolted out the door, the cold air hitting you. Frantically, you paced toward the hospital entrance, feet struggling to keep up with the other. Your chest felt drawn in and every breath was a challenge.
You could feel your heart racing painfully in your throat, in your ears, and in your head. Each pound threatening to choke you. Your legs were worn out from running, yet you couldnât stop. Tears pricked at the corners of your eyes, but you swallowed them down, forcing them back. Not now. Not yet.
Viktor needed you, and you had to be strong, even if every part of you wanted to crumble. The hospital doors loomed ahead, the sterile smell of it filling your nose. With each step, the uncertainty bore down on you more severely, causing your legs to shake as you neared the reception.
Please, donât be too late. Please, donât be too late. Please, donât be too late.
The thought circled in your mind like a chant, you could've sworn you were going insane.
You found the roomâhis room.
Your heartbeat so loudly in your chest you could barely hear your own footsteps, but the sight in front of you stole the breath from your lungs. The door to his room swung open with a force you didnât even realize you had, the sharp sound of it startling the nurses who clustered around Viktorâs bed.
Their heads snapped toward you in a synchronized motion, as though your entrance was both expected and unwelcome.
They didnât even try to move out of your way. You didnât know if they were trying to shield you from the sight of him or if it was a sudden reflex to prevent you from seeing what you already feared.
Your feet felt frozen to the ground as you stood there. You couldnât even take in the full picture of Viktor. His form pale and still under the lights of the hospital room.
The doctor was speaking in a hurried tone, but none of their words seemed to make it past the pounding in your ears. Your mind refused to process anything but the cold, harsh truth that was unfolding before you.
One of the doctors glanced at his watch, his voice steady yet emotionless.
âViktor Vikhnovich, time of death 4:12 PM.â
The words struck you like a hard punch. It felt as though time stood still. You choked on your breath as you looked at the man who meant everything to youâsomeone who had been just out of reach.
Dead.
The word echoed in your head, but it felt wrong. No, it has to be a joke.
You wanted to scream, to demand they are mistaken, to rush forward and shake him awake. But your legs refused to move. Your vision blurred, body numb with the shock that hit you like a bullet to the chest.
The doctors moved around you, but you could barely comprehend their actions. You didnât know if they were trying to offer condolences or explanations. None of it mattered.
All you could see was Viktor lying motionless, as though life had been drained from him just when he needed it the most. It took everything in you not to collapse right there in the doorway.
You walked closer to his laying body; he felt close yet so far. He isn't here anymore.
âNo, no, no, no, no,â the words spilled from your lips, your voice trembling and raw as you stumbled forward. You pushed through the heavy air in the room, ignoring the doctors who tried to steady you or pull you back.
You couldnât hear them. You couldnât see anything except him.
You reached Viktorâs side, your knees giving out as you collapsed by his bed. âNo,â you whispered again, this time softer, as though speaking directly to his now peaceful soul. Your hands hovered over his cheeks, shaking, afraid to touch him and confirm what your heart refused to believe.
His skin was colorless, chest still, and the nasal cannula lay idle. The silence of his lifelessness was more deafening than your cries.
Tears streamed down your face, blurring your vision as you clutched his hand in yours. It was cold, far too cold. Far from the warmth of the pair of hands that heated your cheeks in the middle of the storm just a few weeks ago.
âViktor, please,â you sobbed, voice breaking with each syllable. âN-no, donât do this. Donât leave me. I'm s-sorry.â
The sense of finality rang in your ears.
His face appeared serene, which only boosted your pain.
You couldnât reconcile this quiet, unresponsive Viktor with the man you knew. The one who argued passionately about science, who lit up at the spark of an idea, the man you've always had an unspoken love with.
You pressed a chaste kiss on his forehead, your tears soaking the lifeless skin of his face.
âThis is- this is all my faultâŠâ you choked out. âViktor, you canâtââ Your voice cracked, unable to finish the sentence, because finishing it meant acknowledging the truth, and you werenât ready for that.
Your fingers brushed over his cheek and his moles, memorizing every line and angle for the last time.
The world felt wrong. It was too quiet, too still without him in it.
Sure, he hadnât been a part of your life since the day he walked away, but this was different.
This was final.
The faint hope youâd always held, the possibility of crossing paths again, of hearing his voice, of sharing even one swift moment, was now extinguished.
He was gone, permanently this time.
There would be no second chances, no reconciliation, no more time to bridge the gap that had grown between you.
The doctors and nurses exchanged looks, their expressions a mix of pity and discomfort. Someone murmured something about giving you time, and the sound of footsteps walking away barely registered in your mind.
"Viktor... I love you, too..."
The door clicked shut, leaving you alone with him.
Alone in your grief, your despair.
Alone with the reality that Viktor was gone.
à Ë.âșâč .á
Six months had passed since Viktor's passing and grief still lingered in every corner of your heart.
It had a way of reshaping your life without your permission. The past few months werenât about healing, but more about surviving. You woke up every day feeling like a piece of you had been carved out, like there was a void that you carried everywhere you go.
Life continued on even as you grieve, but moving ahead just felt wrong.
It felt wrong to move on from Viktor because of the realization that there weren't many people left to mourn him. It was just you, Jayce, and Sky. However, in time, the three of you will also be gone. And despite all the blood, sweat, and tears Viktor put in, his dreams of leaving a lasting legacy in this world is now impossible to come to fruition.
You didnât cry every day. Sometimes, it was worse: just complete numbness. The kind where nothing felt real or important anymore.
You ignored his name when it came up in conversations, avoided the places that held his memory, but the pain never failed to find you in the smallest thingsâa faint scent from the past or the quiet moments before sleep when there was nothing to worry you about having to forgive him.
And yet, you didnât let it break you. Instead, you kept going. Because you know Viktor would've wanted you to.
Now, as you clean and reorganize your home, you found yourself surrounded by half-packed boxes. The sounds of tape peeling and cardboard shifting kept you distracted from your thoughts, until your hand grazed something tucked into the corner of an old shelf.
A small box, with the letter V written across its lid in faded blue ink.
Your brows knit together. The curiosity that drew you toward the box wasnât out of curiosity but rather out of realization. You knew exactly what it was. It was Viktorâs. Or rather, a box of things that belonged to him. Things of him from Zaun that you kept. The appearance of it awoken a strong feeling, not only sorrow but also guilt.
"Forgot I still have these." You chuckled, fingers running across the surface of it.
The notebook Sky had given you moments before Viktor's passing had been left untouched. Unread. Seeing it again felt like reopening your own wounds, wounds that were filled with the regret of not having forgiven him when you still had the time to.
You hesitated before lifting the lid, the smell of old paper and dust wafting into your face. Your heart skipped a beat as your gaze fell upon Viktor's notebook, sitting neatly atop a pile of random trinkets and scrap toys you made when you were a kid. But it wasnât the notebook that stole your breath.
Nestled beneath it was a small, rusted toy boat, blemished by years of being kept away. Your fingers shook lightly as you picked it up, the memories it held flooding your mind like the stream where you used to play with this toy boat.
The boat.
The boat that had drifted too far downstream, leading you to Singed's lab. The boat that had set him on a path to greatness, to dreams so grand that they left no room for the simplicity of your childhood friendship. The boat that had left you behind. The boat that changed everything.
A smile tugged at your lips as you cradled the delicate toy in your hands. Viktor had no idea you kept it all these years. Not when he was consumed by ambition, not when you did the same but with the anger for him for leaving, and certainly not in the moments when you questioned if he even remembered you.
It was lightweight, but it carried the heaviness of nostalgia at the same time.
As you held it, images of your childhood played in your mind like a bittersweet reel. The laughter by the stream, the scent of Zaun's polluted air you never imagined you'd somehow miss, and the way Viktorâs eyes lit up with excitement as you launched the boat for the first time.
"I'll get it!"
"Come onnn, youâll never catch it," Viktor called out, his voice teasing with worry after you dove into the shallow water to catch the boat. He stood on the bank, leaning lightly on his cane, his frame silhouetted against the golden afternoon light.
Your laughter bubbled up, louder than the gurgle of the stream. "Oh, watch me!"
Viktor shook his head, his lips twitching into a crooked smile. âYouâll be swept away before you even touch it,â he warned.
He stepped closer to the edge as if he could will you back to safety. He wouldâve waded in himself if his leg allowed it. You knew that. He always hated being on the sidelines, watching while others took the risks he couldnât.
âVik, Iâm fineee!â you called out, glancing over your shoulder at him. The current tugged harder the farther you went, but your determination burned brighter. âYouâre just mad Iâm faster than you.â
His laugh was soft, carried away by the breeze. âFaster, perhaps. Smarter? Doubtful.â
A wistful laugh escaped you as the memory replayed in your mind. Those were the moments before you stumbled upon the cave. If only curiosity hadnât taken overâthen maybe, just maybeâeverything wouldâve turned out differently.
Perhaps you and Viktor could have grown up side by side and make it Piltover together.
Finally you took the notebook. It sat heavy in your hands. You sighed, brushing the thin layer of dust from the surface. Your fingers hesitating for a moment before you finally flipped it open.
Settling onto the floor with your legs crossed, you prepared yourself for what lay inside.
At first, it was exactly as you expected. Pages filled with equations and wobbly sketches of his prototypes. You couldnât help but smile as you traced the lines with your eyes, they captured the excellence he was born with.
It was so distinctly Viktorâobsessive, conscientious.
For a brief moment, it felt like he was right there with you, explaining each one of his ideas with his usual avidness, accent curling around the words.
God, you missed him.
As you reached the middle of the notebook, your fingers faltered. There was something different here.
Nestled between the pages was a photo. One you recognized immediately.
Your breath caught as you carefully lifted it, hands trembling slightly.
It was you. An image of a younger version of you at a turning point in your life when your hard work had finally started paying off. The image had been torn from an old newspaper article that featured your story. A story you never even thought Viktor knew or even cared about.
Your eyes shifted to the random affirmations beside the photo in Viktorâs messy handwriting.
"Still the most beautiful."
"I always knew you could make it, too."
"You grew out your hair. It suits you."
"My solnyshka, I hope you carry my love everywhere you go."
And more.
Each line felt like a whisper from him. He wrote them as if he was going to send them to you, as if you were replying to everything he jotted down. They felt like a kiss to your soul that you could almost hear him next to you, sending a shiver down your spine.
You traced the faded ink with your fingers, overwhelmed by the tenderness in every note he left behind.
Viktor had been paying attention all along, even when you believed he had turned his back on you.
Tears blurred your vision as you stared at the photo, the words, and the ghost of his presence woven into the pages. He was right. You indeed looked beautiful, as if you were looking at yourself through his eyes,
This wasnât just a record of his work, it was also a reflection of the parts of his heart he never fully managed to show you.
And now, here it was, laid bare in your trembling hands.
Your fingers twitched, flipping the pages despite the fear in your heart. A part of you wanted to stop, to close the notebook and shove it back into the box, to avoid whatever might hurt more than you already did. But your curiosity overcame your reluctance, and you flipped to the next page after the other.
What you found stole the breath from your lungs.
In the center of the notebook was a section had been carefully carved out. The edges are neat, every cut made with precision. As if it was a secret pocket.
Within the hollowed space was a ringâa moss agate ring.
The soft green swirls within the stone caught the light, shimmering with a beauty that is so captivating.
It wasnât extravagant like a diamond, but it was perfect. It felt just like him. Like the Viktor you knew.
The Viktor who found beauty in the simplicity, the meaningful, the genuine.
Your breath hitched as you picked it up, cradling it in your palm.
Moss agate. A stone symbolizing new beginnings and emotional healing. He had chosen it for a reason, you realized, and the realization tightened the ache in your chest even more than before.
It wasnât just a ring. It was a promise, a reflection of your shared history and of humble beginnings, of scraped knees and childhood laughter, of dreams whispered by candlelight.
As you turned it over in your hand, a folded piece of paper stuck out the notebook, fluttering to the ground like a fragile leaf. You picked it up, noticing the faint smudge of red on the corner.
Blood. His blood. The realization sent a chill through you. Viktor penned this with his own hands, hands that had become frail as his body slowly stagnated.
Unfolding the letter, your breath caught at the sight of his familiar handwriting, every word etched with care despite the shakiness of the strokes.
His voice seemed to reach out to you from the page, the words pulling you into his world one last time.
My little sun,
Should this letter ever find its way to you, I cannot say how or when. Perhaps it never will. But if youâre holding this, it means I am no longer beside you.
I write this not knowing if youâll ever read it, yet I must. Even if I will never again see your face alight with that smile of yours. There is nothing left to save me, and Iâve tried. I've tried to make peace with it. What weighs heavier than the end itself is leaving you. Knowing Iâve caused you so much pain.
Iâve thought endlessly of us, of the life we shared before it all crumbled.
Do you recall the day we met? You were the only one who didnât flinch when you saw me. My leg, my limp. They meant nothing to you. You were so small then, full of boundless energy and kindness. You stopped without hesitation to help me gather the rusted scraps Iâd dropped. And with that light of yours, you simply asked if I needed help.
Even then, I sensed there was something deeper. Something I wouldnât understand until much later. From that moment, I knew you were unlike anyone Iâd ever known. Only you... could make me feel that way.
I remember those stolen moments by the stream, the times you wept and I tried to comfort you, poorly if I may say. Yet in truth, it was your warmth and your embrace that gave me solace. Your laughter lingers still, echoing in the quiet spaces when I find myself longing for your presence.
And that day in the undercity, when you found that broken toy. You insisted we could fix it, though I swore it was beyond repair. I tried to explain the impossibility with the misaligned gears, but you looked at me with that defiance of yours and said, âWeâll make them fit.â And that we did.
Because that is who you are. Persistent. Always striving to mend what others deem beyond hope, even me. You tried to fix the rift between us when it should have been my responsibility to bear. And in return, I only worsened everything.
Do you remember the night I promised to marry you? We were just children, dreaming of a future that seemed impossibly distant. I donât know what made me say it. Perhaps it's the way you looked at me, like I could be more than I was. You laughed and called me 'silly', but I meant every word.
Even then, I meant it. I told myself I would build something worthy of you. A life worthy of you.
But instead, I left. I pursued ambitions that devoured me whole and left you behind. And in doing so, I broke us. I see that now, clearer than ever. Though I donât deserve it, I hope you understand how deeply sorry I am. For leaving, for hurting you, for failing to be the man you deserved.
When I promised to marry you, you told me Iâd have to make you a pretty ring. I took that to heart.
Iâve held onto this ring for what feels like lifetimes. It is not grand, not polished like those found in the shops. It is simple. It is us. And it has always reminded me of you.
I donât know if youâll ever forgive me. Perhaps I have no right to ask. But you must know this... Loving you was never a regret. It was my only certainty.
You are, and will forever be, my sun. The light I chased even when it burned. You made the impossible seem possible, even for someone like me.
And though I am gone, I hope you will continue to shine. Shine brighter than I ever could.
For both of us.
Yours always, Viktor

Chapter 1: Remit to see, limit to seeâRemind
previous chapter  masterlist next chapter
"Mornin boys, I'll be your escort today." Reina saluted them as they walked out the front door.
She wore a white button up blouse, leaving the first few unbuttoned to show off a good chunk of her cleavage. A coffee colored skirt that hugged her thighs, and her signature 3'' heels. She decided to forego the white coat with something more fashionableâa long beige coat that covered most of her from head to toe. Her hair tied up in a high ponytail.
Shirazu greeted her with a big smile and started to chat with her, but Urie on the other hand wasn't amused. In fact he was annoyed, but at least she was better than their other useless mentorâHaise Sasaki.
He rolled his eyes and walked away from both of them.
"Sorry to interrupt, 'razu, but Urie's leaving without us." She motioned with her thumb that he was at least a good foot away from them.
Quickly apologizing, the blonde boy scurried to catch up to the other boy and whined about how heartless he was for leaving without them. The purple haired boy remained quiet and didn't say a word and instead just kept walking.
Walking behind them she admired the scene in front of her, reminding her of the good times she had with her older sister before they started drifting apart. A small smile was etched on her face.
As they arrived at the warehouse the trio was met with an investigator.
"AkiâI mean Investigator Mado! I came to escort the boys to get their back up quinques." She bowed.
"Investigator Nakou, good to see that you're cleaning up your act. Good to see you too, investigators Urie and Shirazu." She nodded their way.
"Hey, I don't like what you're implying, Mado!" The lilac haired woman argued but sighed in defeat knowing it was true.
During the past few days she's been stepping up and acting more like a mentor than before. But she had yet to drop the facade she'd put up since she entered the CCG as mentioned after Akira spoke to her directlyâthough she had reason as to why she wanted to sell herself as the dumb-good-for-nothing-bimbo.
"Any progress with the case?" Mado ignored the whining woman and proceeded to converse with the two boys.
Shirazu beamed at the acknowledgement meanwhile Urie just answered her questionâannoyed by all the small talk getting in the way of what they were originally came here for.
"A plain Tsunagi." Akira motioned as they were handed their quinque.
"That's so boring." Reina nagged.
"They're backups, and they're still as good as your own quinque."
"You mean Widow? My baby glides through everything so smoothly, I doubt these can be as good as Widow. Can't wait till you both get your own!" She turned to the boys and patted them on their shoulders.
"You two, don't neglect your quinques just because you can use a kagune. The quinque is an anti-ghoul weapon developed by former general chairman Yoshiu Washuâthe father of General Chairman Tsuneyoshi Washu, in partnership with the German Bureau Chief Adam Gehenna." Akira went on,
"The CCG engaged ghouls with firearms back then but were ineffective against a ghouls' kagune. Research into an alternative weapon gave birth to the idea of using their own kagune against themâmanufactured weapons based on a kagune. Quinques.â
Reina shifted from side to side seemingly uninterested with the topic at hand. She ended up zoning out in between the woman's history lesson on how they came to be.
"A soldier with a built-in quinque, if you will. That is what you Quinxes are. But, even with that abilityâyou are not ghouls. There are limits to a Quinx's ability." Akira turned to face them all,
"You've never seen Sasaki fight at his best, have you?" She asked.
Both males shook their heads at the higher up, meanwhile Reina just smirked at her question.
"No. But he uses a quinque very skillfully. There's much I can learn from him." Urie reluctantly complimented his useless mentor.
"Well if you both want to know, he's an interesting fighter. He uses techniques he's learned from the CCG until-"
"I think that's enough of that." Akria gave her a pointed look, meaning she's crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed.
"I didn't say anything." Reina giggled and surrendered.
The boys just looked confused as to what was going on between both their mentors. Urie though understood that Reina held a lot more information than she led on. Just how much did she know about Haise Sasaki?
Turning back to the boys, Akira told them to always use their quinques and bid them goodbye.
"Let's get going. I know you both want to go find Torsoâand I know you both have a lead on him." She crossed her arms across her chest.
Her face was uninterested as she told them. Immediately Shirazu tried to deny her claim, but quickly came to find out that he was a horrible liar. She could clearly see through him and it didn't help that Urie's usual poker face was falling apart. Veins littering his forehead indicating he was upset at being caught. How foolish could he be thinking that he could get away with such information.
"So you mind telling me your lead or should I tell Haise about this little scheme you have?"
"I think you might wanna speed up if we wanna catch up with them!" Reina yelled, gripping on to Urie's waist so as to not fall off Shirazu's motorcycle.
The three of them piled onto the vehicle, while both boys wore protective gear in case of an accident, Reina wore none at all seeing as she was not involved in the original plan to capture and eradicate Torso. Urie inevitably squished between the blonde boy and lilac haired girl.
"Karao Saeki!" Shirazu yelled.
Behind him Urie urged the same message realizing that they had no chance unless they did so. The blonde concerned about breaking the law hesitated to do so until both of them yelled at him to hurry up. The cab in front of them waved side to side in an attempt to avoid oncoming traffic.
Quickly Urie realized they could have an advantage if a certain person had the capability to do so.
"Take out the tires with your kagune!"
"Are you serious?!"
Looking behind him he saw that the purple haired boy was serious about his idea. Groaning at the plan he did so but warned him that if he missed they weren't to blame him
Swiftly pushing on the gas pedal the blonde released his ukaku. It branched out, spikes formed threatening to detach themselves from their place. Attempting his best at aiming at the cab he released three missiles continuously all imploding as they missed the cab.
Groaning at his incompetence, Urie jabbed at his horrible aim, but Shirazu just threatened to knock him off the bike.
"Could you both shut up and concentrate on the task at hand?!" The forgotten girl scolded the arguing duo.
At this point they were noticed by the cops and were told to pull over. Taking this as an opportunity to alert the cops of the upcoming danger Reina looked behind her and motioned her hand in an upward direction. As if getting the memo immediately the cop car sacrificed itself and pulled up by the cab attempting to tell them to pull over .
But in doing soâTorsoâripped their faces off with his kagune and flung them through the window to dispose of them. With no driver to maneuver the vehicle around it slammed into the wall of the tunnel they drove into. Just as Torso thought he had escaped law enforcement officials, the end of the tunnel was blocked off with a few barricades and cop cars surrounding them.
The cab came to a stop and the drivers door opened revealing a thin, half-naked man with his shirt wrapped around his face in an attempt to keep his identity anonymous. Hopping off the bike they all assumed a stance, not even a few seconds later Torso released his kagune and struck at the trio.
Unsurprised they dodged his attack and moved aside letting the expensive bike take the hit. Regaining his composure quickly, Shirazu released his ukaku and launched his projectiles towards the "masked" man. Shocked, the man was glued to the ground which left him to be the perfect target for the Quinxes onslaught.
They made quick work of him until a new obstacle made themself known to the trio. A masked person in a coat walked out of the shadows, their kagune ready to strike at anyone that gets in their way.
"I'm sorry but that scrawny half-naked guy is ours. You guys are Quinxes right? You use a kagune, right? You Doves make me downright sick. You're no different from Aogiri." The clearly distorted voice echoed throughout their ears.
A sense of familiarity struck the girl. That bikaku, that tone of voiceâshe swore she heard it from somewhere.
"And now that you've made me sick... I wanna have some." He snapped his head up eyes piercing through the mask,
"Nish-" Reina was interrupted with a strike thrown her way. She backed up and instinctively hid behind the abandoned cars.
Decidedly done with her he switched opponents, Torso long gone from the battlefield. Rate: S Orochi was now the main target. He dashed past the girl and swung his leg into Urie's gutâsending him flying into the wall of the ditch. The boy coughed up blood from the sheer force of the kick to his abdomen.
"Sorry, but I don't hold back against Doves. You'll get in my way one of these days. Better to nip you guys in the bud when I can." He sneered as he neared the bloodied up boy. Behind him Shirazu snuck up behind him and released a few missiles his way thinking they'd absolutely obliterate the masked man.
"What was that? A pea-shooter?" He mocked the blonde boy as he simply dodged them.
Both boys quickly got fed up with all his taunting. Wanting to get this over with, they came at him with all they've got. They swung their kagune and attempted to strike him, but all that came was more frustration. They jumped and leapt from place to place destroying more and more of their surroundings.
He kicked Urie down to the ground, his kokaku shattered and destroyed. He sat down on top of the destroyed cars and looked down at the furious boy, mocking him.
"That's it? For a kokaku? All it took was a kick? Guess it's an imitation after all." He chuckled.
The sound of footsteps could be heard growing louder and louder as they nearedâShirazu. He quickly took a stance and swiped at him releasing his missiles a dust cloud quickly forming not allowing them to see the extent of how much damage the blondes kagune actually did to the ghoul.
Once it cleared away he was left unscathed. Realizing they didn't have a chance to exterminate the Rate: S Ghoul Shirazu opted to retreat until backup came, not wanting to risk his life for something he knew they couldn't handle yet. Angry at his words Urie didn't relent, but instead tried to push forward. His method of keeping aliveâself cannibalism.
He dug his teeth into the flesh of his forearm, the sound of squelching and the aroma of blood overwhelmed his senses. Reina looked his way, the smell of blood enticing her to take a bite of him. She shook her head and walked towards them.
"Hey four eyes! Seeing as they're useless, how about we have a match of our own?" She yelled out, a smirk creeping up her lips.
The ghoul turned around and looked at her,
"What's a bimbo like you doing in the CCG?"
"Still judging others based on their looks, Nishi? How about I remind you how strong me and my sister were when we kicked your ass."
She released her rinkaku, purple like tentacles reached out in front of her and in the blink of an eye they cleanly cut his hand off. She sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
"Shit, I'm getting rusty. I meant to go for your whole arm. Luckily I got the other one though." She mumbled as she waved it around in her hand.
Her squad looked at her in awe and fear, the sheer speed and talent to distract someone was a talent to have at this point. They looked back at his figure and noticed that he was regenerating at a quick pace. His thick bikaku swayed back and forth before it readied to strike her until a quinque split it in half. She dissolved her kagune and watched the back up she called come to their aid.
"Sasan!!"
"Sir!"
"Who the hell are you? The king of the imitators?"
"Mutsuki, contact Investigator Mado.â
The man didn't respond to his taunting voice and instead went to attack the ghoul without a second thought. He uttered a word in between every attack and dedicated each attack with his heartâthinking about his squad with each swing of his sword. The Rate S ghoul eventually caught up to his attacks and gave him a taste of what he was like.
The ghoul muscled him in the gut like when he did so with Urie a few moments ago. Haise doubled over and screamed in pain, his quinque out of reach, probably somewhere behind him. He stayed there for a while until he rose to his feet, raising his right handâhe cracked his pointer finger, the same crack released his kagune.
In an instant Haise's demeanor changed. No longer was he the looked down upon investigator, but rather a strong, intimidating man. Just as the ghoul tried to attack Haise, he moved out the way like this wasn't the first time he engaged in a fight with a high rated ghoul. This was the first time the squad saw their mentor use his kagune at all.
He skillfully jumped and leapt away whilst keeping up with his attacks against the masked ghoul. Within a few seconds Haise had shattered the ghoul's kagune, and though it regenerated almost instantly, it was still a major feat for them.
"You'reâ tough." Haise gritted through his teeth just as Orochi approached him face to face,
"Well, thank you." He kicked Haise in the gut just like before, but this time Haise regained his composure in an instant and his kagune reached out to grab his quinque and it settled in the palm of his hands.
The squad noticed that he was depleting in stamina, his dodging time slowing down to the point where he was dodging the attacks just in the nick of time. When Orochi struck him again he fell to the floor, immediately coming to his aid the squad reached out for him but he put his arm out.
"Stay back-"
"We can still fight!"
"We're not just gonna stand here and watch-" they protested, but all Haise did was look back and grin at them.
"That's an order. Reina, help me would ya?" He motioned.
Grinning from ear to ear she slid her coat off her back and let it fall to the floor. She released her kagune, long, thick, deep purple tentacles following behind her as Haise stretched before going back to attack the Rate S ghoul.
"You definitely intrigue me more than those punks." The masked ghoul hummed.
Haise chuckled, "I'm not sure if I should be honored. But I don't think you want to get to know... me." He cracked his knuckle and attacked him without a warning.
Haise showed no mercy, his actions were a lot more fluid and natural, his instincts told him what was right and what was wrong. When Orochi leapt away from Haise's attack, Reina formed her kagune into thin, razor sharp arms and pinned him into place... like a spider with their prey. They pierced through his skin, his shoulders and hips; the areas bled profusely.
This gave Haise the perfect opportunity to pierce Orochi's abdomen like before. Haise didn't have any reaction, he just looked concentrated as his hand contorted as if it was the one controlling his every move. That was until his second tentacle pierced through another part of his torso. Haise began grinning from ear to ear as he continued his onslaught of torturing the ghoul. Painful groans along with squelching noises could be heard from the pinned body.
"Just returning the favor.." he smiled manically, clearly enjoying this little show of theirs.
Removing his kagune from the ghoul's abdomen Reina shoved and grated the masked ghoul into the wall of the tunnel. When she let go he dropped to the floor like a rag doll incapable of moving himself around.
Pushing themselves off their kagune they reached the now unmasked ghoul. The girl picked up the mask and hid it behind her, meanwhile the boy straddled him and looked like he was going to give him the easy way out.
"'I'm dying I'm dying...' is that how it goes?" He coughed out as he laid on the street
The duo paid no attention to his words.
"Oh buddy, guess you still haven't found salvation, huh... Kaneki." He revealed his face from underneath the hood he had on.
That familiar face... orange hair..
"...nishio..?" Haise slipped out.
Haise lost his mind. Memories distorted, blank faces haunting him, mouths moving but no sound coming from them. The only sound he could hear was his name ringing in his mind... Kaneki.
"Guess playtime's over Nishio, take care." She said as she tossed him his mask.
Walking over to Haise she hugged him, her kagune shattering his. She held him as he thrashed around her hold, her grip never letting loose. His nails dug into her skin drawing blood from the scratches, his screams and wails echoed throughout everyone's ears. The pain he inflicted onto her was nothing compared to his.
Memories of her hugging her restrained sister filled her head. She called out her fathers name, her name, she seeked comfort from those she trusted. Haise in return had no one to tell him to cry it out, to let him feel. No one but himself, and not having anyone to remember them by was a greater pain none of them would ever understand.
She took his hits, his scratches, until they ceased into small cries. The RC bullet put him to rest for a while. They both collapsed onto the floor as he muttered his name, Haise Sasaki, over and over again. Looking down at him, Reina brushed his hair aside in a comforting manner hoping he'd find comfort in it as it was the only thing she could do at the moment with all eyes on them.
Although he still clawed at her, the pain was much more manageable. She ran thimble fingers throughout his full head of hair and nodded at his words. "You're you," she caressed his face with her free hand, wiping his free flowing tears. She noticed her subordinates looking at them... fear... jealousy... and awe was clear on their faces. She felt his hand grasp her wrist, she looked down. He looked into her eyes and was about to speak upâalmost expecting his words she reassured him,
"You didn't kill anyone, don't worry. We're all safe. Get some rest now, Haise."
And with those words of reassurance he closed his weary eyes. A deep slumber falling upon him. Sighing in relief Reina picked the man up with ease and carried him into one of the cars their back up came with. Closing the car door she went to pick up her discarded coat on the floor and threw it over herself.
"We're riding elsewhere, I'm driving."
"Will Sasan be okay?" They mumbled out.
"Of course he will. He always bounces back." She smiled back at them before she entered the escorted car.

TILL FOREVER FALLS APART !
summary: when sirius said siblings are off limits, james never thought he would break that rule as his best friend was the only one to have siblings close to their age, but everything seems to change when the sister sirius swore to hate because of her cruelty has several detentions with him and sheâs not as cruel as her brother described.
notes: james potter x black!reader. reader is a twin sister of regulus, kinda angsty at the end, hurt/comfort, sirius is kind of an ass. not proofread
you really thought that the detention with james potter would go easy. not a word would be shared, him not even looking at you as he probably know your relationship with his best friend, and then you two would have a week free from each other, but james potter seemed to be interested in you â or more likely, how did you end up in a detention.
he saw you as a perfect black, thatâs how sirius would describe you, or your twin brother whenever someone brought up your name. and no matter how positive it sounds, he was always negative, never mentioning your childhood, and how attached you were to him.
the perfect black daughter, more ideal than narcissa or bellatrix, the one who would never obey her elders unlike sirius or andromeda, the one who would do whatever they say to please them.
well, it was partially true, you could give that to him. but you nor regulus werenât like any other family members. you werenât brave enough to stand up to your parents and survive the punishment with a smile on your lips like your brother did, you two were two afraid to do anything that could make orion or walburga mad.
but both of you were proud slytherins, with regulus being one of the best quidditch players of your house, and you impressively good at whatever you touched. you were plotting against your parents, the death-eathers and everyone that could get in the way of your plan. an escape plan, to runaway somewhere far like france or canada, while everyone thinks you died. nonetheless, sirius couldnât know that â he barely spoke to any of you, which just worsened when you were invited to the deatheaters meeting at your house.
in his eyes, you were nothing but a piece of shit like rest of your family for being unable to runaway earlier, for having no one to runaway to, as the rumors about your enjoyment in dark magic spread at school with light speed. however, unlike sirius you had your twin, always ready to stand up for you and vice versa, always ready to fight anyone who says a bad thing about you.
sometimes you and regulus would sneak out of the house and wander around the crowded streets of london, thinking how would your life looked like if you werenât wizards, if you werenât born into a family with an obsession of blood status and keeping it pure.
what made you even more perfect in everyoneâs eyes was that you looked exactly like a female version of regulus, or more accurately, he looked like a male version of you. wearing the same clothes when you didnât have to wear robes, and it wasnât like you planned it â you had a gut feeling to wear your expensive like hell, black coat, and so had he. you looked intimidating, walking next to your brother, evan rosier and other friends of yours with faces that seemed to never experience any emotions. like rocks, untouched by peopleâs words, stares and pointing fingers.
âhow did you end up here?â your companion asked out of sudden, making you shift in your chair. you already finished cleaning the classroom but there was still more than an twenty minutes left, and you couldnât just leave for whatever reasons. âdidnât expect to see the perfect black sister having time to bother herself with things like detentions.â
âand why does it interest you, potter?â a sigh slipped from between your lips as you rest your chin on the left hand. âso my brother can have more reasons to despise me, because as i presume, youâll tell him.â you didnât even let him have a glimpse of your mimic as he could only see your back.
âoh, miss black, who do you think i am?â you heard him get closer, and take a seat by your side, probably briefly looking at the book youâd read. he could swore to merlin, he thought itâd be a book containing black magic spells you would cast if flinch didnât confiscate your wands. but it was far from dark margic. âiâm just curious, have heard a lot of⊠things about you and wanted to check myself.â
you fixed your black hair before quickly considering if you should tell him the real reason or the made up one youâd told evan and pandora. âhmm, what would i get from telling you?â you leaned closer to him, revealing your face. it was one of your first encounters with james potter, and hell, you know it wouldnât be the last one, since there were at least four next weeks of detention together.
âwe could figure something out, yâknow.â he shrugged, scanning every inch of your flawless skin, starting at your eyebrows and eyes, through lips to chin. you were gorgeous, and james couldnât blame the first years that sometimes followed you like a lost puppy around the castle, trying to gain your attention or the girls having their lesbians awakening while watching slytherinâs practice with you as a substitute for your brother. every comment he had heard about your immaculate beauty was so real, that he could swore he would develop a crush on you in other circumstances. âjust tell me.â
âi stood in my brotherâs defense, the one you know better.â you replied, averting your look back to the book you were reading, not really bothering yourself to catch a glimpse of jamesâ parted mouth as he realized the sense of your words. âany more questions or can i finally focus on my book?â
âwhy did you- how did you-?â
âas much as some people tries to say, i do care about my family membersâ well-beings, even though they refuse to talk to me or my twin.â you let out a little too harsh than you planned. âand no one will say anything bad about my brother unless itâs me or regulus.â you didnât even wait for his reponse, leaving the classroom as soon as the clock hit nine in the evening.
you could say everything, yet you decided to reveal part of the thing that happened. and you knew that james would, most likely, tell your brother how you tried to gain his attention by making up a story. what you didnât tell him was the part where you broke lucius malfoyâs nose, completely forgetting how much influence had his father on yours, and how mad they would be.
the next detention went⊠smoother. james didnât bother you with questions about elaborating on the reason of your punishment, however it wouldnât be james potter if he stayed quiet. especially when you didnât have to clean the classroom again, just sit in silence while mcgonagall watched over you, but unfortunately (for you) she had to leave.
âmiss black, didnât expect you here.â a chuckle left his mouth, sitting himself in front of you, taking in your gorgeous face. âany kidâs dreams of dating you crashed last week?â for a moment, a millisecond, he could see a shadow of smile on your lips, and james potter felt like he already accomplished his mission for today.
âhow did you guess?â you rolled your eyes in a playful manner, allowing yourself to look at the boy in front of you. his dark curls fell onto his forehead, and you could swear if it wasnât for his glasses that somehow kept them out of his eyesâ way, he wouldnât see a thing.
and you couldnât know that, but james potter wouldnât let himself miss such an opportunity to just stare at you for at least few minutes. it was strange, he never wanted to just look at a girl, who wasnât lily evans and interested in him at the same time. though somehow, you were living free in his mind, making the boy catch himself on staring at you during meals.
âpulled out some prank on snape lately?â you added before he replied, a hand put under your chin as you leaned over the table, watching his every move. his eyes lit up immediately on your visible interest in whatever he had done during the previous week. ânot a fan of snape?â james questioned, his eyebrow higher than usually.
âplease.â you rolled your eyes again. âis there anyone whoâs a fan of snape besides your girlfriend?â you let yourself smile at him for a brief moment, before shifting in your chair.
âevans sânot my girlfriend.â his replied shocked you, you couldâve sworn to yourself you saw them snogging somewhere. not that you cared with whom james was making out. you didnât care, at all. ârumor has it, you two hook up a lot.â
âiâd throw up over him rather than do anything that involves physical touch. he disgusts me.â you knitted your eyebrows together at the so-called rumor, you already heard from sirius on christmas.
âwhy? because heâs a half-blood?â the gryffindor seeker blurted out before thinking, causing you to back out from the conversation, a strange feeling of pain raising in your heart. it was something he would regret saying later at night, processing every inch of your talk, realizing that everyone thought you were a pure-blood supremacist, and probably it wasnât the best thing he could say to you.
âbecause heâs a misogynistic piece of shit, potter. snape could be a highly born pure-blood wizard, the best one out there, but if he says things like this about your little girlfriend when sheâs not there or any female in general, heâs a piece of shit like any of his friends.â your words came out harshly, but you felt disrespected by someone who tried talking to you first.
the rest of the detention you spent in silence while james was explaining something that involved brooms and words snivellus, regret, and some other things you didnât pay attention to, too busy counting minutes to the end of that cruel meeting.
however, the third and fourth were much more⊠pleasing, you could say. the boy pulled an expression like if he actually wanted to get to know you on his own and found out what made you silent a week earlier. it almost felt like it was planned, mcgonagallâs presence needed somewhere else, and a bunch of sweets you adored, snatched from the kitchen in a little bag in his hand.
âsorry. for the last time, i said some stupid shit that didnât mean to come out like that.â he confessed, genuine in his voice was so clear that you couldnât held back a smile, forming on your lips upon seeing his gesture. âdonât say shit like i didnât have to. i did. i wanted to apologize, and get to know you.â
âhmm, apologise accepted.â you spoke out softly, offering him a bar of chocolate. âbut, mister potter, why do you want to get to know me so bad? thought other people know everything better than me.â
he shifted in his position, getting closer to you, a mischievous smirk spread over his lips. âyâknow, miss black, youâre an interesting person, and i canât get you out of my head, so i had to do something about it.â
the upsides of your immaculate skin was that it tended to get red-ish rapidly, and that comment of his with the flirtatious tone made you burning red. without any shield to cover your face, you broke the eye contact with the gryffindor, and smiled involuntarily, feeding up his ego.
however, it didnât took you long to look him in the eyes again, continuing the conversation with a smug smile that matched his. âwhat would you like to know, ask and iâll answer.â
you awaited questions like how is it to be a death eather, or have you ever thought of killing someone for your parentsâ sake, or anything that would make you cringe inside. although, he firstly asked you questions people never remember the answers to â whatâs your favorite colour, muggle movie, a book you could recommend him to read in a free time.
âjames potter likes contemporary romances?â you laughed, shaking your head at the answer to the last question he gave you. there was no imagine in your head of james potter, the great seeker of gryffindor, reading a contemporary romance book with eagerness and passion. âiâll like whatever you recommend me, pretty girl.â
âhmmâ you dragged out the words, searching for something in your bag. an exclusive, limited edition costing thousands of muggleâs money, of your favorite book â the pride and prejudice by jane austen. there was a brief moment of hesitation, was he just playing around and you would never get it back, or does he really wanna read it? there was something in his eyes that made you trust him prior to handing him the book. âitâs my favorite one.â
âyou like classics?â you nodded.
james felt a weird, tingling feeling in his stomach as you clarified it was your favorite one, and now he had it in his hands. he recognized the muggle author, because his mom read a lot of muggle classics and romance in her freetime. it was bizarre to learn you liked muggle book, hardly ever mentioning a wizard one.
for the rest of the third detention you just⊠talked, ending up with being walked by him to the basement, so the disscusion you had wouldnât be cut off so suddenly. the fourth one was even better, the best of them as there was no awkwardness between you two, despite the closeness of your bodies. he sat next to you, your arm and leg touching his whenever he leaned closer.
this time, you were the one talking â infuriated by some guys from ravenclaw that had catcalled you a few times on your way to the detention and one had tried to touch you, thinking it was okay to touch anyone without their consent. they were seniors, finishing school in june when you were a fifth-year, frightened by the vision of writing owls in may.
james just nodded his head, not daring to interrupt you even once, maybe in fear of getting hit by your hands that couldnât stop moving ever since you started your monologue. he just chimmed in a few times saying true and yes, but he was focused on how your eyes flickered with annoyance and anger, making you even prettier.
âare you even listening to me, james?â the way you empathized his name made his stomach do a flip, a whole acrobatic performance. it was one of the first times, or even the first, when you referred to him as james, not potter, not mister potter or anything youâd called him before, james. âyeah, yes, sorry. assholes from ravenclaw, right?â
he walked you to the entrance of slyherin common room for the last time as it was your last detention together for a while, and you smiled at him warmly before disappearing behind the doors. the first thing you saw after stepping into the room was your brotherâs interested smile.
âpotter walking you here? someone got a crush.â he laughed, wrapping an arm around your shoulder as you climbed the stairs up to his dormitory. âsirius would probably kill him if it was true, my dearest little brother.â you replied walking into the room of your brother and his few friends.
âsirius would kill who?â rosier walked out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waistline, winking at you with a flirtatious smirk. âquit it, evan. sheâs my sister.â regulus was faster to reply.
you plopped on evanâs bed as it was the only free one and sighed. âreg thinks a certain gryffindor has a crush on me because he walked me here.â
âtwice.â
âokay, yeah. james walked me twice and regulus thinks he has a crush on me for simply being nice, after literally interviewing me.â you mumbled, crossing arms on your chest. âthereâs nothing to discuss here, heâs a gryffindor, a potter, itâs just inherited kindness.â
âand why are you so involved in figuring it out, sister?â your brother asked with a smug smile, his eyebrows high up as he thought he found out about your great secret. âdo you reciprocate his little crush on you, huh?â
âshut up, asshole.â you rolled your eyes, throwing one of evanâs additional pillows at him. âdo i look like a 5â4 ginger with a gryffindorâs scarf hung around my neck?â
âplease, if iâll see you one day in a fucking gryffindor robe, i donât know who i am going to kill first, your future boyfriend or you for cheating on me, pretty girl.â evan sat beside you, almost immediately throwing his hand over your shoulder, pulling you closer to his still wet-ish chest.
you laughed, making yourself comfortable. unfortunately for regulus (who always wanted to kill any of his friends that tried to hit up on you), you enjoyed your flirtatious relationship with evan. âyou think really highly of yourself, mr. rosier, took my first proper make-out and you think you decides on which robes i wear?â you shot back, biting back a playful grin appearing on your face.
âyou know what i mean, sweetheart.â prior to regulus gag, you sent your friend a kiss and he pretended to catch it and hide in the depths of his heart. âof course, lovely.â
âplease, get the fuck out if you want to be all couple-y here with each other.â andrew, another friend of your brother, groaned with fake annoyance as you sent evan another kiss. âwhat, andy? you jealous or something?â your friend laughed in an answer.
the next time you saw james was when a guy that tried to harass you, walked into the great hall with ugly, red hair and a robe with a large, inscription above his head âi harassed a younger girl.â he sat at the table across the hall, a mischievous grin spreading over his lips as you were the only person his eyes had focused on.
fifteen minutes later, you met him under the willow tree, a smug rosing on his face when you caught his glance. âmiss black!â he called out, waving at you. âdid you like what i did? especially for you.â
âit was⊠funny, you know.â you chuckled, taking a seat next to him as you had around twenty minutes left before anyone that could suspect basically anything would walk out of the castle. âi can give you that.â you mumbled, closing your eyes when your head touched the rough tree limb.
âsooo, you should go out with me as a favor, pretty girl.â he sent you a charming smile that would make your legs weak if you werenât sitting next to him. âmaybe on sunday, watchu think?â
you wanted to disagree, say no to him and explain yourself that your older brother, his best friend at the same time, wouldnât be fond of this idea, though he looked at you with those alluring, brown eyes of his, and you couldnât deny. âfine. sunday, it is.â
and thatâs how you two began to go out, sneaking around and lying to your brothers that nothing really went on with the two of you. nevertheless, sirius was completely unaware of your little dates as anything had barely changed â james still talking about lily with a picture of you in his mind, and you⊠still didnât talk to him. whatsoever, regulus knew about everything by connecting the dots and following the clues you left him unwillingly.
âiâll kill him, hope you know that.â he spoke out suddenly, when you tried to get to your classroom in time, especially because it was potions and slughorn never tolerated lateness. never if you werenât his favorite students that he collected like gems, giving them privileges and other additions that were probably against school rules. âhuh?â
âpotter.â you froze in your tracks for a minute. âif he ever lays a hand on you like our father did on our mother or do anything that upsets you, heâs dead.â a warm smile was painted on your brotherâs mouth as he cocked his head to the side.
âwhat? donât look at me like that. iâm not dumb as others to not notice the smiles he sends you from across the hall or how you disappear to hang out with julie, when sheâs alone in the common room.â he exclaimed, a few laughs left his mouth, when you still frozen, looked at him with horror in the eyes. âiâm happy for you, chill, ugly face.â
âyouâre not mad? fuming? furious?â you asked, voice somehow still low when you entered the classroom. âwill you try to name all the synonyms for mad? and iâm not, y/n. iâll leave that for the other brother you have.â
you gave him a quick side hug, before occupying yourself with anything that the teacher said, scolding you for being late, again. however, all you had on your mind was the date, your soon-to-be-boyfriend took you on.
it was the date, youâd say⊠a surprise one, and with james, they were on the normal basis. he would somehow let you know that there are places you need to be at night and a guide on which type of clothes should you wear (and a few notes saying how good you look during the day). then, he usually awaits you beside the enterance to your common room under the invisibility cloak, waiting to finally be able to kiss you. three nights ago, you two ended up in the pub, drank a few butter beers and met a few people that sixteen and fifteen years old probably shouldnât met at night, they acted nice though.
however the night when everything went downhilld was the night you were supposed to spend in the library, studying to the upcoming owls that stressed the living shit out of you since the beginning of school year. a cup of coffee standing beside the books to transmutation, your biggest nightmare, dark red stains adding a little life to the white cup that was emptying with every other moment.
you were about to get another sip of the sweet liquid youâd prepared earlier, when it was snatched from your hand while someone planted a sweet kiss on your lips. âhey, love.â his voice so soft, and delicate you almost passed out from the tingling, warm feeling in your abdomen.
love, love, love. you would let someone kill you to hear it one more time.
âjamie, hi.â you tilted your head to the side, smiling at the boy warmly. âthatâs the first time i see you in the library, something happened?â he shook his head with the prettiest smile youâve ever seen.
james was the only person along regulus that you had never minded having any form of physical touch, as you grew up with the minimum you sometimes got as a reward. with all the other boys that tried to get somewhere near you at the parties it was just weird, having their arms thrown around various parts of your body had never failed to make you uncomfortable, even with evan you couldnât be fully okay.
but james⊠you craved it to function like a normal human being. his touch was like oxygen, the feeling of his hands on your waist, hips, hands was⊠enchanting, making you want to live again. it was like if you were in a romance book, having the full epic, first sight, soulmates love with a twist (your brotherâs hatred towards you). was it love? you couldnât say yet.
âjust wanted to spend some time with ya, yâknow?â his hand flew to his curls, ruffling it as he lowered his eyes, focusing himself on the books in front of you. âtransmutation? the old hag loves me, you couldâve said something.â
âi tried to figure it out on my own, but i barely moved from the starting pointâŠâ you let out a low groan, hiding your head in your hands, exhausted. âdidnât want to be a bother, you know.â
âlove, i got outstanding from my transmutation owls, itâs like an easy revision for me.â he planted a kiss on her check, before leaning closer and stealing another sip of her coffee. âiâll get us something to eat and youâll be first in your classesâ
âmkayy, thank you, jamie.â
well. there wasnât much of studying, if you were honest. when the lights went finally out, your boyfriend put the invisibility cloak on top of you, so ms. prince wouldnât catch you past the curfew. the minute she closed the libraryâs door, you felt potterâs lips crashing into yours, one of his hands pulling off fabric of the cloak.
he sat you down on the table, tossing the books aside. his hand gripping your thigh firmly, after sliding it underneath the fabric of your skirt. you could feel the burning marks his touch left on your skin, heated kisses tracing down your neck with hickies almost all over it.
you would probably keep going if it wasnât for someone that dropped whatever they had in their hands upon seeing you two. before you could notice any characteristics of the person you heard james let out a mumble âoh fuckâ.
and then you saw your brotherâs face.
oh fuck indeed.
he stormed to you and before james could even react, he was hit by the shoulder of sirius whose eyes were still on your face. âstay the fuck away from my brother.â the way he empathized the word brother made you feel like someone just stabbed you in the back repeatedly. with the moment these words left his mouth, your whole expression changed to the emotionless and blank, the one you gave everyone but your friends.
âsiriusâŠâ your boyfriend sighed, his hand, the one that had a grip on your thigh, was now on the oldest boyâs shoulder. âdonât. this is between me and her.â
âstop messing with my friendsâ heads. you donât deserve to be near them, none of them is a fucking deatheather like you or the other one, none of them will ever be, because unlike you two, theyâre good.â he spat, eyes burning with fury. âi donât care how many of your charming smile you had to give him to take the amortentia from you, but itâll end, sooner or later.â
âyou donât even know me, sirius.â you stated, your tone still and awfully cold as you got off the table and stood in front of your brother. âdonât act like you do, brother.â
âdonât call me that.â he replied, taking your wrist in his hand. âi donât fucking care that we grew up together, that we share our last names. weâre not siblings since you and regulus joined his forces. so stay the fuck away from james, he doesnât even love you, the only thing he talks 'bout is evans.â
âdoes he, really?â you cocked your head to the side, not letting his words influence you, not here. âyou know, maybe your so-called brother wouldnât have to lie to you if you werenât so obsessed with hatred you have towards me and regulus. maybe he could tell you that he was the one who started bugging the shit out of me, maybe he could tell you how did we even meet.â
you could see sirius flinch, averting his gaze to potter, who tried to get in between you for a moment now. âdonât tell me itâs true, prongs, after what she did to me?â
âwhat i did to you? you were the one who left, brother, youâre the one who cut us off the second we were sorted to slytherin, you runaway and youâre mad, because i and reg were fucking kids who wanted to survive.â your voice broke, nevertheless, it didnât stop you. âyou didnât even try to do something, save us, yet both of us were so fucking stupid defending you whenever someone brought you up. i broke luciusâ nose when he talked shit about you, but fucking evans is closer to being your sister than me, iâm so sick of it.â you couldnât hold up your coldness, and calmness and you broke down within the end of the sentence, mascara smudged all over your cheeks as you cried while running out of the room.
you didnât expect james to run down after you â you thought heâd stay with his friend, becuase there werenât anyone you thought would run after you (excluding regulus, because he would jump into the flames with you). so when your boyfriend barged into the moaning myrtleâs bathroom you were shocked.
âbabyâŠâ he spoke out quietly, pulling you into a hug, gentle but tight. you didnât even look at him, just cried your eyes out while breaking his heart by saying how tired you are of everything, and how you wanted sirius to be your brother again. a few kisses were planted on your hair as he tried to calm you down.
âjamie, please donât leave me now.â you pulled away to look at him, eyes already red and swollen from tears. you werenât used to show how vulnerable you were, and a thought of your boyfriend leaving you, because of it was so realistic in your head.
âwhat? why would i?â he knitted his eyebrows. ây/n, i love you and i know that deeply inside you care about what sirius think of you, but you have nothing to be sorry about, okay? with that said, i wonât leave you, never, okay?â you nodded lightly, resting your head on his shoulder.
âi love you too.â you whispered. âat least we donât have to hide anymore, right?â a small smile painted on your lips upon your words.
âitâs us against the world right now, love.â

The sound of skin to skin contact echoed throughout the meeting room. Pale skin becomes red as blood flows to the surface of it. A mild stinging pain could be felt, the feeling of embarrassment flooded his senses, but he kept a cool front. His poker face never faltered no matter how humiliated he was.
A sense of lingering anger and authority dropped from the hand that slapped the boy. His face filled with worry as his voice spoke out,
"A squad leader can't put his squad members' lives at risk." His voice was serious.
He was dead serious, and it showed not just through his expressions, but through his violent actions. He'd never once laid a hand on them no matter the circumstance, but he felt the need to express it this time to show that he was the one in charge for once and wouldn't be put down.
"It's dangerous to show our back to the enemy. I took the possibility of Orochi pursuing and attacking us from the rear into consideration." He defended himself.
He stared at Haise the whole time and asked him, "does that warrant a slap in the face?"
"You think you're so smart. Why else do you think I called for Haise? You would've died had it not been for me telling him as soon as we left to pursue Torso." Reina yelled at the foolish boy.
His ego got too big that he almost killed himself and the rest of his team all because of his selfish desires. Haise stood still as everything unveiled itself.
"Ghoul investigators must run even if their arms and legs are torn off!!" He raised his voice, veins popped out the side of his neck. His face contorted into one of worry.
"We'll have our chance as long as we're alive. What can we do if we're dead?!"
Sighing, Reina got in between both boys and put a hand on each of their shoulders. She pushed Urie away a bit and turned to face him.
"Urie I'm relieving you from duty as Squad Leader of the Quinx Squad." She stated.
Again Urie started arguing, he made sure his voice was heard when he said, "I find this unacceptable," but both of them didn't budge, instead Haise put his foot down and in an authoritative voice jibed, "it's an order."
Gritting his teeth Urie breathed heavily leaving a heavy suspenseful silence in his wake until he sneered at both of them, "but you're both ghouls..."
His eyes widened meanwhile the rest of the squad squeaked in surprise at his bold claim. How could he disrespect their mentors?! Shirazu wasted no time in beating some sense into the boy.
"You're a piece of shit!!" He yelled as he kicked the purple haired boy.
He continued to lecture the boy about how responsible and considerate their mentors were. How they both risked their lives for theirs. He tussled him around like a rag doll, Urie having no reaction to the treatment he was getting at the moment. Instead he looked behind him where Mutsuki was standing.
There the shy boy stood watching Shirazu manhandle Urie. Noticing that he was looking back he decided to speak up.
"Urie.. I.. I'd like you to apologize to Instructors Sasaki and Nakou."
"Shirazu let him go." Reina raised her hand in a stop motion.
Following her order he did so slowly. Looking back at his mentors he noticed that Haise was about to speak up.
"No matter what he says, my decision is final. Besides, I'm appointing Rank 3: Investigator Shirazu as Squad Leader." He pointed at the blonde.
Shirazu screeched and tried to protest. He had no idea what Sasaki was thinking, but this wasn't right. Him? Squad leader?! Those two things should never be in the same sentence. Haise reassured him that he'd teach him what it means to be a leader.
Turning to face the boy that was walking away he playfully hit him a small smile gracing his lips that didn't quite reach his ears.
"Urie. You keep disobeying me and I'll eat you! I'm a ghoul, remember?" He chuckled softly.
Having nothing else to say, the denoted boy just walked out the room. Noting Haise's weird behavior she walked behind him and patted his shoulder making him look down at her figure. She smiled weakly at him and left to follow after Urie.
She looked around everywhere and found him sitting on the couch by himself in the living room. Deciding to sneak up on him she quietly approached him and hugged him tightly against her chest. Startled at first he tried to pull her arms off of him until he heard the familiar sound of her voice reach his ears.
"Got ya." She tilted his head so he could look up at her.
Huffing he let her have her way with him. She let go and climbed over the couch to sit on the glass coffee table. Her small figure leaning back, strands of lilac hair letting loose from her messy bun.
"I'm going to make it quick since we have to wake up early tomorrow." She put it simply as she crossed her legs.
He looked her dead in the eye and motioned for her to get on with what she initially came here for.
"You need to learn to respect others, you know. If you keep up this rude attitude it won't make others like you. Now since I started living with you I've learned a few things." She started.
"You don't like sweets, so I don't know why you have that with you. Two you don't care for relationships, whether it's romantic or platonic it doesn't matter. You push those who care for you away all because of your personal goals." She sat upright and stood up walking behind the couch.
"Let me tell you from personal experience... you'd rather have friends or people you can call acquaintances than enemies. Why? Because you don't know when the last time you'll need them by your side is. If you have no one to be there for you, you'll feel lost." She leaned over it and whispered in his ear,
"I know you don't care about these mundane matters, but it'll come and bite you back in the ass. Especially if you mess with the wrong people." She breathed out and turned around to leave.
"And who would those people be?" His voice echoed throughout the vacant room.
The girl stood glued in her place.
"Since I started living with you I've learned a few things." He mocked.
She turned around and smirked.
"Yeah? Like what?" She taunted.
"You've been acting up since you moved in. Not a single time have you actually acted yourself. This little vulgar act you're putting up isn't fooling anyone. Who are you? Is the real question, Reina Nakou." His voice dripped of venom.
She smiled at his words and walked up to pat his cheek.
"I hope you know what youâre getting yourself into, darling."

Time seemed to be warping and blurring together frenziedly; day and night pushed out of conscious thought, the passage of days folding together in one reel of memories in your head. The starless sky peered at you like an endless void, indicating that it had somehow already dipped into the corners of the darkest hours again.Â
Your heart gives a sharp twinge as you find your eyes locked to the tall figure standing at the head of the hall, face ashened, mournful cloak adorning his imposing figure like a blanket trimmed directly from the night sky. Harry lingered ways off from you as everyone stood with tense backs and squared shoulders.Â
You blink away the detachment tugging at your awareness as your ears seem to become full of cotton, keenly aware of the way your wand poked at your ribs from your robe pocket. Your former Potions Professor flickers his gaze around the swarms of students around you, and your chest almost collapses in on itself when you lock eyes with the stone-faced man. Snapeâs eyes widen ever so slightly, but he masks it with a sneer as he raises his eyes to look over your dismayed face.Â
Your mind immediately spins into overdrive as you grapple with your thoughts. That couldnât have been your imagination. He saw you, so why didnât he say anything?
A frown dances on your lips as you revisit your old sentiments about the man. You had always had your reservations about Harryâs inimical attitude towards Snape (though he had them for good reason), and you were beginning to think that you were correct in your assumptions that the manâs interests werenât exactly black and white.Â
Harry drifts through the rows of students and makes himself known, immediately pouring out all of his pent up fury towards the man. Snapeâs face does a funny thing as it shifts ever so slightly from suspicion to troubled.Â
The doors from behind you are tossed open, causing everyone to step back towards the walls as all heads dart to survey the intrusion. At the helm of the group, Kingsley Shacklebolt strides in with more assurance and conviction than youâve seen in any of Dumbledoreâs followers since his death.Â
Stepping out from the belt of students, you unconsciously begin to reach out towards Regulus. The boyâs eyes move through the crowd furiously until they lock onto your drifting figure, his shoulders immediately slacking as he extends his hand out to you.Â
A smile crawls up your face as you hurry out of the crowd and towards him, unbothered by the burning of eyes on your back as you do so. Once you grasp the boyâs hand, he brings your hand up to his mouth to give it a faint kiss, shooting you a small wink as he tugs you closer to him.Â
The Order members hold their unwavering stances, faces etched with determination as they gaze at a frowning Snape. The manâs eyes are still fixed on Harry, seemingly unperturbed by the arrival of the Order and the overt breach of security.Â
Harry grits his teeth as he practically snarls at the man, âTell them how you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you, and killed him!â Your friendâs chest heaves with every word, as if the recollection of the events was causing him physical pain.Â
You edge closer to Regulus as your eyes flicker between the two individuals. It was a stand-off that had been brewing for years, finally sizzling and tipping past the boiling point as your mind takes you back to your very first year at Hogwarts, painted with Snapeâs glares and Harryâs innocent confusion. No longer was your friend inflicted by such adolescent hurt, now only rage and fatigue shrouding from his body.Â
It happens in a flash, you nearly miss it as you blinkâSnape draws back and points his wand at Harry, eliciting choked gasps as the crowd of students split further apart in shock. Regulus steps in front of you instinctually, and if the situation were not escalating to such a degree, you would have found it funny that he jumped in front of you despite having no weapon or wand.Â
As Professor McGonagall pushes Harry aside, firmly drawing her own wand up, you push Regulus behind you as you reluctantly bring your wand up to point at the man you had made so many mental excuses for. Snape falters at the sight of the womanâs stance, but regains his composure and levels his wand to her.Â
Silence falls upon the hall, tension as thick as molasses as everyone draws in their breaths in anticipation. For a moment, you think nothing is going to happen, that perhaps Snape would magically curl into regret and surrender, but then a bolt of flames soars through the air.Â
McGonagall is unforgiving in her onslaught of attacks, and Snape merely backpedals from his spot as he deflects the spells. The manâs face falls impossibly further into hurt, and youâre struck with a whirlwind of confusion.Â
Why do you look like youâre the one whoâs suffering, professor?
The one-sided battle recommences and youâre left rooted in your spot as Snape suddenly flees out of the window in a flurry of black swirls. As the glass shatters, a cloud of excitement seems to sprout into the air as shouts and whispers fill the perimeter.Â
Regulus places his hands on your shoulders as you pocket your wand, your eyes still glued to the broken glass at the end of the hall. The cheering and clapping die almost as quickly as they erupted when Harry collapses, a sudden sharp stabbing in your head accompanying your friendâs stumble. You hiss as you reach for your temple, noting how the hall was now blanketed by a miasma of fear.Â
Suddenly, a piercing scream slices through the air like cold steel, followed by another and another. Regulus huddles you to him as he peers at you with concerned eyes, his hands moving to trail your arms as the buds of chaos begin to prickle around the room.Â
A sharp hiss rings from all around you, and you would have feared for your sanity if not for the petrified expressions on many of the other studentsâ faces.Â
âGive me Harry PotterâŠDo this and none shall be harmed.â  The words seem to bounce around the room as you guide your eyes to settle onto Harryâs stiff figure.Â
âGive me Harry Potter, and I shall leave Hogwarts untouched.âÂ
You divert your gaze to look at Regulus, and find that the boy is already glancing at you with conflicted eyes.Â
âGive me Harry Potter, and you will be rewarded. You have one hour.âÂ
The tint of doom seems to lift almost immediately, and you exhale shakily as the foreign pressure around the atmosphere dissipates.Â
âWhatâs that look for, Reg?â You whisper, unwilling to raise your voice as confusion stirs the air into silence.Â
Regulus huffs through his nose and wraps his hand around your wrist, stepping to stand beside you as he looks towards Harry, âJust wondering if itâs too late to leave and go back to Norway.âÂ
You shake your head and go to retort, but youâre cut off by a resounding voice emitting somewhere among the swath of students, âSomeone grab him!âÂ
Your eyebrows furrowed together at the outlandish suggestion and your eyes trail about to try and distinguish who it came from. Seeing many of the gazes aimed towards a cluster of Slytherins, you tilt your head as you see an unfamiliar boy pointing towards Harry.Â
Ginny makes her way in front of Harry, spurring the rest of your friends to crowd around the speechless boy. As your eyes begin to wander, wanting to take note of those who were readily jumping to serve your friend on a silver platter, you make eye contact with an unimpressed Blaise.Â
The boyâs eyes flicker to look at Regulus before they jump back to you, an eyebrow slanting up in a manner that reminds you all too much of the Contessa. Blaise slowly slinks towards the back of the crowd just as Filch hobbles into the hall, shouting incoherently about students being out of bed.Â
âYou have some explaining to do.â Blaiseâs velvety voice sounds from behind you, causing you to jump out of your skin.
Turning around on your heels, you slam your palm against your chest to jumpstart your heart again. Did he apparate? How the hell did he just appear behind you?
Rolling your eyes, you give the boy a brief hug, âNice to see you too, B. Sorry that I went AWOL, I wasnât exactly in contact with anyone.âÂ
âExcept my mother.â He points out with a sniff, arms crossing.Â
Coughing lightly into your fist, you sheepishly smile in apology, âNothing big, just aiding some vigilantes.âÂ
âYou are a vigilante yourself, no? And you couldnât have sent a little slip of paper telling me âhey, Iâm alive!â, could you now?â He mutters with narrowed eyes.Â
Shifting from foot to foot, you lightly frown, âUh, sorry?âÂ
He waves you off before setting his eyes on Regulus, who looks infinitely amused by your friendâs antics. Blaise pauses for a split second before a shit-eating grin plasters itself on his face, âOh, how prestante! You disappeared and found yourself a pure blood boyfriend, I see.âÂ
You blanch at his words and he snickers, âMerlin, donât look so surprised. His facial structure just screams pure blood.âÂ
âOkay, thatâs enough of you, B.â You hiss, âYou absolute menace.âÂ
The boy doesnât have time to respond as students begin to file out of the hall, someone bumping against your shoulder as McGonagall announces that students would be evacuated, underage students taking priority, while those of age were welcome to stay.Â
Your eyes widen at the announcement, the reality of your situation crash landing on you all at once. âB, go. And look out for Draco, will you?.â You point your chin forward, eyes flying around the room before you settle them on Regulus, âReg, go with Blaise.âÂ
Regulus swivels to look at you with wide, disbelieving eyes, âI hope youâre joking.âÂ
âAnd I hope youâre joking. Iâm not letting you run into danger without a wand!â You shoot back emphatically with a sharp tone.Â
âDio mio,â Blaise clicks his tongue, gracefully shoving his wand towards Regulus, âHere. If you break it or lose it, my dear Y/N will no longer have a boyfriend.âÂ
You and Regulus pause. One beat of silence passes, then another.Â
âBlaise, what the bloody hell? Absolutely not! Your mother is going to have my head if she finds out that I left you defenseless.â You sputter, hands flying up and nearly batting into a passing student.Â
The boy shifts to the side to avoid a stumbling first-year as he keeps his eyes steady on yours, âGood thing sheâll never know then. Besides, I wonât be needing it. I plan to apparate to Zabini Manor with Theo and Draco once we get out of here.â He rolls his eyes impatiently once you and Regulus remain motionless, âNow take it before I change my mind.â
âAre you absolutely sure?â You mutter quietly, eyes trailing towards the dark wand, feeling torn despite your friendâs insistence.Â
âWell, heâs going to follow you anyway, and Iâd rather be temporarily without a wand than permanently without a friend because you jumped in front of a curse trying to protect him.â He muses dryly, eyes quickly shifting to appraise Regulus as the boy reaches for the wand.Â
He was going about this way too casually, a wizardâs wand was practically their life! But there was no arguing with the obstinate git, especially when he had that determined look in his eyes.Â
You nod and swallow harshly as your throat wells up with thick emotion, âThank you, B. Stay safe, okay? And make sure Draco doesnât do anything stupid.âÂ
âNo worries, our dragon is all out of stupid after what happened last year.â The italian winks at you before elegantly spinning around, his robes billowing behind him as he strides towards the exit, weaving his way towards a familiar mop of platinum blond.Â
Regulus twirls Blaiseâs wand around in his hand as he gets used to the feeling. He looks over at you with a warm smile, eyes twinkling brightly as a fire lights in them, âAlways a good judge of character, birdie. Indeed, you are proficient at picking friends.âÂ
âClearly not proficient enough, Crowface. I managed to grow attached to a stubborn bastard like you.â You hum playfully, taking a hold of his wrist to drag him towards your circle of friends.Â
Though, one meaningful glance from your savior friend was enough for you to understand: split up and haul ass.Â
Hermione and Ron take off in search of the basilisk corpse in the Chamber of Secrets, while Luna gives you a small smile before darting off towards Harry with a frustrated frown. Professor McGonagall almost breaks her neck doing a double take at Regulus, clearly recognizing him, but says nothing of her revelation as she ushers you with her.Â
Regulus trails after you both, flocked by Professor Flitwick and Molly Weasley, both giving the boy discreet side eyes.Â
âL/N, we are going to need to give Potter as much time as possible. Iâm sure you have an idea of how you can utilize your skills.â The woman gives you a small knowing smile, and you nod back quickly despite not knowing exactly what she was insinuating.Â
It is not until she spins back around and braces her hands up that your brain begins to work again.Â
âPiertotem locomotor!â
Your eyebrows furrow at the foreign spell, but your attention is immediately redirected when a deep thudding echoes from somewhere in front of your willowy professor. Peering around her, your eyes widen as numerous concrete knights begin to march out in streams from the entrance hall.Â
Ah. Weâre Harryâs first line of defense.Â
Winking at a fascinated Regulus, you couldnât resist the urge to demonstrate your own magical prowess, wanting to match up to the boyâs level of intellect. Drawing your wand out, you scurry down the series of stairs and drop to your knees, beginning to draw out the most complex shielding runes you knew, tangling the swirls of characters into compounds of symbols that begin to shimmer against the dull ground.Â
The strings of characters glow brightly before darting off into the sky in a flurry of streaks, reinforcing the growing bubble being patched together by the Order members. You continue to relentlessly draw your symbols, the ache in your wrist being overshadowed by the warmth of pride that lit up in your chest at the sight of your runes chaining themselves to the colossal dome.Â
Ways off from you, you see Regulus marveling at the sky, eyes dancing around the strings of your runes. Your brain screeches to a halt as you zone in to look at the boy, mouth floating into a faint smile at the way his lips imperceptibly part.Â
It was paradoxical, how at the height of slaughter and war, you fell into a hum of peace at that very moment. Your drifting thoughts only surge forwards when a procession of wispy blue streams hail towards the near-translucent dome, raining down towards you in mottles of cerulean orbs.Â
Just as you begin to rise from your position, knees wobbling unsteadily along the way, the feathery streaks crash into the shield and explode into veins of white combustion. The loud crashing of explosions deafen you, and you stumble in blinded shock towards Regulus.Â
The boy is already making his way towards you, face grim as he strides across the plaza with purpose. You barely refrain from crashing into him as he reaches to hold onto your biceps.Â
Blisters of blinding white wash over your figures as you grip onto his elbows. Chancing a glance at the sky, you laugh shakily, âThink you still know how to handle a wand?âÂ
Regulus smiles and cups your cheek, âOf course, I have to protect you somehow.âÂ
âYour sense of humor dazzles me, love,â you search his face, opening your mouth to continue your retort, only to be disrupted by a painfully loud explosion, followed by the sound of insistent sizzling.Â
Above you, your beloved crown of protection withers away like disintegrating paper.Â
Chaos erupts almost instantaneously with giants lumbering through the concrete knights on the bridge, as arrays of colorful light fracture the structures around you. You catch a glimpse of Professor Flitwick scurrying around the crumbling soldiers, hands gesturing frantically for the students to take cover inside.Â
The rune weavings that you spelled float listlessly until they gravitate towards the castle, speedily wrapping around a couple of the towers and absorbing into its walls. Regulus grabs your hand and you both sprint for cover behind a pile of rubble, ducking as gusts of apparition soar above you.Â
Screaming begins to bloom into the air, followed by hurried shouts of curses and spells. You spring up onto your heels, wand at the ready as your eyes dart around frantically, heart virtually beating in your neck.Â
âCrucio!âÂ
Your neck snaps to the side at the guttural yell, barely muffling a yelp as a red bulb of light zips towards you. Dodging the spell, you feel a symphony of rage tug at your nerves at the sight of a familiar death eaterâthe man who had grabbed you during the attack at the Department of Mysteries, Augustus Rookwood.Â
Practically swinging your wand, you hurl your spell, âReducto!âÂ
The man goes flying across the courtyard, smashing through a cracked archway before landing roughly like a ragdoll. You feel someone press against your back, barely taking note that Regulus and you were fighting back-to-back before another death eater sets their sights on you.Â
You donât know how much time passes as you and Regulus weave through onslaughts of killing curses, blasting aside enemies and assisting other students in their duels. Your world of blurry fighting trickles into clarity once you catch sight of an enormous giant swinging down at a familiar trio, all of them sprinting further down the ruinous remains of one of the castle walkways.Â
âPaxillos Inferni!â Your shout echoes all around you, and your vision tunnels in on the cast of neon orange that darts from the tip of your wand. A wave of satisfaction drenches you as you see the giant drop its weapon in surprise, body jolting in agony before dozens of small razor-like spikes sprout from its body, suddenly expanding in size with a sickening crunch. The giant drops to its knees, a lifeless husk, remaining upright, supported by the flurry of colossal spikes that impaled it from every direction.
A few death eaters in your vicinity stop in their tracks, eyes widening as they take in the sight of the shredded giant and your bright eyes. Regulus swings his arm forward, sending a death eater packing before taking notice of your victory.Â
âWhereâd you learn how to do that?â He mutters reverentially, eyes drifting from the carnage around you before settling on the palisade-giant fusion.Â
You shrug before taking advantage of the wave of shock around you, incapacitating a few lingering death eaters, âIn one of the books at Grimmauld Place.âÂ
âI see. Nice work, dear.â He hums, tying up a sprinting death eater before the crazed woman could attack a distracted Hufflepuff.Â
A sudden chill ensnares the nerves in your spine and fingertips, and you have to suppress the violent shudder tugging at your muscles. Risking a glance away from the enemies in front of you, your mouth falls ajar at the sight of a curtain of black drifting towards you.Â
âDementors.â You murmured, unnerved by the sheer amount of the creatures making their way over. The golden trio tumble forward and become struck by the same sight. The dementors drop down towards the bridge, swinging and weaving around fallen bodies and chunks of concrete.Â
A gust of blue threads tangle into a large sphere before expanding across the bridge, the exceptionally powerful patronus charm managing to ward away a majority of the dementor army. Your eyebrows fly towards the sky as you catch sight of Aberforth, the manâs wand extended out towards the retreating veils of grey.Â
You had no idea the man was even capable of producing a patronus with how downtrodden he seemed just hours before. This would be the last time youâd judge a wizard by their supposed disposition.Â
Catching sight of a few stray dementors, you instinctually raise your wand, expertly locating a few specific memories of yours to manifest the spell, âExpecto Patronum.â
The familiar sparrow bursts from your wand and darts towards the dementor, the creature immediately retreating into the sea of darkness as the small bird perseveres in its chase.Â
âWhat?â Regulusâ breathless mutter has you directing your attention to him, eyebrows raising at the astonished look drawn on his face.Â
Feeling bashfulness crawl up your chest, you clear your throat and jump back into battle, only sparing him a small biting remark, âLaugh about it later.âÂ
The boy follows your lead and sends a hex towards a cluster of death eaters, âLaugh about what?â His voice is tinged in disbelief, yet still marred by his previous amazement.Â
âWhat do you mean, about what?ââ you blast an unsuspecting death eater in the side, â--Obviously about my patronus.âÂ
âWhy would I laugh?â He practically yells over the commotion of explosions raining from all around you.Â
You want to groan, feeling that perhaps he was trying to torture you, âBecause! Itâs a bird. A little birdie.â The boy glances at you with a minute frown of perplexion before his eyes slowly shift in realization, head snapping back to take down a few more enemies.Â
Once the mayhem around you quells in just the slightest, he turns back to you, âMerlin, what am I going to do with you?â He mutters with a faint grin. Before you have time to question him, he shifts around and lifts his wand up, âExpecto Patronum.âÂ
The light blue swirls jet out from the borrowed wand and you raise an unimpressed eyebrow as it surges towards a confused death eater, the man watching as the spell flies towards him. You really couldnât blame himâyou too, would be rendered speechless at the arbitrary display.Â
Just when the spell goes to topple into the man, it morphs into a familiar shape that has you gasping. Regulusâ small patronus sharply shoots up into the sky before it can crash into the death eater, the small bird rounding in circles before dissipating into the night.Â
You and Regulus donât miss a beat despite the demonstration, both taking aim at the flabbergasted death eater and sending off your best hexes. Once the man goes tumbling away, Regulus turns towards you, âA finch.âÂ
âA finchâŠâ you echo quietly.Â
Finches and Sparrows. Complementary birds.
âYou-â you can barely comprehend the look on Regulusâ face as he breaks out into a wide smile. Your mouth parts, taken aback by how blatant his fondness was.Â
âMy little birdie.â He whispers affectionately, leaning to rest his forehead against yours.Â
Your heart stutters on the spot, and you have to close your eyes to try and grasp onto reality. Regulusâ hands dance around your waist as colorful blobs spiral across your eyelids, the stench and discord of war suddenly shoved out of the forefront of your mind.Â
Opening your eyes, you take a brief moment to peer into the boyâs eyes, mouth pursing once you see the fire dancing in them.Â
âBlast me into a wall if you hate this.â You whisper. Regulus merely grins, immediately understanding your thoughts, and looking anything but bewildered.Â
Giving no time for lingering doubts to fester, you surge forward and crash your lips onto his. He reciprocates immediately, gently nudging you behind a mountain of rubble as his lips dance with yours. Your hands run around his sides, seeking something to ground yourself to as he leans in further, completely pressing himself to you.Â
His hands press themselves into your back, pushing you impossibly closer to him as if he were afraid youâd fall through the ground and disappear. You both continue to clash together for a dizzying amount of time, only stopping once the burning for oxygen practically imprints itself into your lungs.Â
Pulling back with a huff, your eyes widen in disbelief. Reality comes crashing into you like a bludger as your eyes jump around every little freckle on his face. Regulusâ chest heaves as he tries to catch his breath, eyes refusing to stray from yours.Â
âWe-â you utter, voice practically a squeak.Â
Regulusâ eyes flicker with mirth before he drops his head to sprinkle fleeting kisses on your jaw and neck. Your hands freeze against his chest, not knowing how to handle the hot flash of disbelief and giddiness that sinks into your frame.Â
Your brain was glitching, perhaps even smoking out of your ears.Â
Eventually, you gently push the boy off of you, eyes already flying around in search of approaching enemies. Flashing the boy a warm smile, you slowly begin to emerge from behind the mass of concrete, âLetâs continue this later, yeah?â Your voice comes out smaller than youâd hope, but youâre just happy it wasnât shaky.Â
âNo protests from me, birdie.â Regulus whispers lightly, hand ghosting your back as he submerges himself back into battle.Â
You arenât sure how much time has passed, but you are vaguely aware of how the sky seems to shed away into a forlorn grey as opposed to its former void of pitch black. When you spin on your heel, you make eye contact with a panicked Harry which has all of your mental alarms ringing.Â
âReg!â You call over your shoulder, not glancing back again as you briskly march over to your friend, cognizant of the faint sound of footsteps behind you.Â
As you near the boy, you reach over to grasp his forearm, âHarry?âÂ
Harry gulps, âWhereâs Draco?â
âWith Blaise, they evacuated.â Your voice is cautious, watching as Harryâs eyes flicker from you to the battle behind you.Â
âOhâŠGoyleâs dead.âÂ
âHeâs whatâwhat the hell? Harry?âÂ
He shakes his head, eyes darting to look at Regulus before he averts his gaze to peer off into the distance, âNo time. Come on.âÂ
You share a look of resigned confusion with Regulus before youâre both bounding off after the speeding boy, mind whirring on overdrive as you all duck into the steep shadows and clamber down a vacant stairway. Harry crouches down as you near a building, and you can only silently squawk once you realize it was the Shrieking Shack.Â
What the hell was the boy up to this time?
Harry leans against one of the walls and peers into a crack in the mosaic glass, eyes wide as he mutely scrutinizes the scene in front of him. You and Regulus huddle together to do the same, but not before you quietly cast a concealment charm to hide your presence.Â
Youâre able to make out Snapeâs figure, the manâs face was undoubtedly sullen as he tracks the movements of his companion with a perpetual frown. You feel Regulus tense by your side as you both recognize the other occupant in the room.Â
Clenching your jaw, you shoot Harry a sharp look that he ignores, the boy becoming entranced by the conversation Snape was having with bloody fucking Voldemort. Craning your head closer to the cloudy glass, you can faintly make out what the tense exchange was about.Â
The Elder Wand?
Regulus drops his hand down to interlace with yours, eyes shifting back and forth over the lattice of the window as he tries to fathom the topic. A few moments of eerie silence stretch out before youâre flinching back as something tersely slams against the window in front of you.Â
Your first instinct is to reach for your wand and prepare yourself for confrontation, but upon closer inspection of the glass, you realize that it was muddled by a dark heap. Tilting your head, you hover a finger over the middle of the black shadow, eyes widening once you see the figure move ever so slightly.Â
Harryâs hands are clenched tightly by his side as he peers on with unblinking eyes.Â
âNagini kill.âÂ
The cold voice has you swallowing a gasp, ears prickling with cold needles of dread at the realization of what was happening. A reverberant hissing slices through the air and soon youâre watching helplessly as the figure in front of you slams and struggles against the pane of glass.
Tears stab at your eyes painfully as you remain rooted to your spot, shoulders completely slack as shame wrings your veins unrelentingly. Separated by a mere two inches of glass. You wanted more than anything to be endowed with a wave of courageâto spring into action and save your Professor, but you knew you couldnât.Â
Two inches of glass, and Snape didnât even know such little distance separated him from help. Or maybe he didâyet, you didnât know if that was worse. If he knew you were all there, and gave no inkling of knowledge to the vindictive Dark Lord. Was he protecting you all?Â
The banging ceases, eventually.Â
Your jaw trembles violently as splatters of blood decorate the panes in front of you, dripping bright red, the streaks mocking you. Regulusâ face is completely blank and devoid of any color, but you could see the deep-seated agony flashing in his eyes.Â
Were they friends? You couldnât help but want to ask, knowing that Regulus would have been Snapeâs junior whilst at Hogwarts.
You hear Snape grapple with his pain, gasping forcibly into the silent air. For a few moments, you wait it out, not wanting to storm into the building just in case Voldemort was basking in his most recent attack.Â
Harry shoots you a quick nod, and thatâs all it takes for you to fly onto your feet, body pushing through the worn door with such force that it slams into the adjacent wall. Your eyes find your Professor immediately, heart flying away into the dusty shadows somewhere as you collapse by his side. Regulus kneels down by Snapeâs feet, eyes searching the older manâs disorientated gaze.Â
âProfessor!â Your voice comes out as a thick tremble, hands shaking with adrenaline as you fish out your wand. You begin to try and cast the strongest healing charms you know, but deep in the back of your hazy brain, you knew it would be fruitless. Harry crouches down opposite of you, posture more reservedâguarded, as he swallows harshly.
Snape glances at you briefly, eyes already dimming, before he turns to look at Harry when the boy tries to put pressure on the manâs wound. You refuse to look behind the blood-soaked collar, knowing that his neck was likely a mangled, stringy mess of flesh and muscle.Â
âTake themâŠTake themâŠâ Snape utters with a pained groan, small glimmers of tears rolling down his cheeks. Harry, seeming to understand the manâs urgency, whips out a small glass vial from his pocket and collects the tiny droplets.Â
Snape reaches out with a weak hand towards your frantic friend, fingers ghosting over his face as he smiles weakly, âYou have your motherâs eyes.âÂ
Harry barely bats an eye at the manâs words, only peering at him with a mournful gaze. Regulus speaks up for the first time, eyes hard as he addresses your friend without taking his eyes off of Snape, âHarry, go.âÂ
The boy looks over to you in question, and you give him a brief nod.Â
Harry hesitates before leaning back and nodding slowly, hand gradually retracting from the bloody mess of the manâs neck. Your friend bites the inside of his cheek before capping the glass vial, âGoodbye, sir.âÂ
Without looking back, Harry flees the room and leaves you alone with the dying man. Your hands wander about in the air helplessly, as you grit your teeth, âProfessor, you canât die.âÂ
Snapeâs head lolls over to your side, and he gazes at you dully, chest rising and falling more erratically now. You shake your head and furrow your eyebrows, âDo you think you can just drop down and die like this! You still need to apologize to Harry. If you die, Iâll never forgive you. I donât know what the hell youâve been up to this whole timeâthis whole warâbut Dumbledore trusted you. And Dumbledore was no bloody fool. So, live.â Your voice, once hard and full of fiery conviction, drops to a low whisper, âLive so I know that I havenât defended you for no reason.âÂ
The man squints at you and his fingers weakly twitch, lightly tapping your hand once. Slowly, his eyes flicker to meet Regulusâ tense figure.Â
âRegulus.â The man murmurs, syllables becoming slurred as his eyes droop lower.Â
Regulus nods and shifts to sidle by you, hands reaching over to pat the manâs arm, âItâs me, Severus. Itâll be okay now, just rest.â Regulusâ soft words of comfort bring a small smirk to Snapeâs face, and as you go to say more, your Professorâs breathing stutters to a stop.Â
âFuck.â You mumble out with a scrunched face, eyes burning as you press the image of Snapeâs still body into your memory. Regulusâ shoulders sag, and he slowly reaches over to button up the collar of Snapeâs robes with glassy eyes.Â
âHe might have actually been a spy for the Dark Lord this whole time, birdie.â Regulus whispers, hands drawing back slowly once he finishes his task.Â
You sniffle and turn away from your dead professor, âI donât know. I donât want to believe that. I donât even have a sound reason for my judgmentâI can just sense it.âÂ
Regulus nods and reaches to cradle your face in his hands, âYour senses have yet to steer you wrong, little bird. I trust your judgment, always.âÂ
It was inscrutable. How could you truly mourn, pity, or empathize with a man who most thought to be Hogwartsâ most depraved? It was dichotomic how you wished to understand Snapeâs motivations, but simultaneously wanted to spell away any memory you had of the man.Â
A part of you hoped that he was everything you thought him to beâslightly misunderstood, heavily misguided, and desperately in need of atonement. Another part of you also prayed that it was the antithesis of your feelingsâthat he was truly an unredeemable, malevolent mastermind that fooled Dumbledore. At least that way, when the public inevitably denounced the man, he would deserve it.Â
You refuse to shed tears over Snapeâs death, but you wallow in the sea of hurt and conflict that threatens to drown you as you and Regulus make your way back to the castle. It takes a few moments before you snap back into reality, immediately tensing up as you scout the area for any signs of life.Â
Regulus was faring better than you at the moment, eyes set forward, one hand grasping Blaiseâs wand, the other, tightly clutching yours.Â
âIt will end soon.â He mutters, voice level and firm with certainty.Â
You donât respond, but you feel a pebble of determination fling itself into the empty cavity of your chest. As you both slip into a dark corridor of the castle, wands raised, you hear distant explosions and yelling around the corner.Â
It was time to gear up for battle again. Throwing yourself into a slight duck, you swing out from the darkness with a hex at the tip of your tongue, a vicious spell rippling through the air and crashing devastatingly into a death eater moments after.Â
Mayhem befalls the ruined hallway in a matter of seconds, and you catch a glimpse of two ginger mops. Slowly knocking down death eaters, you work further towards the two Weasleys. When you get within a few yards of the familiar individuals, you feel a small smile paint itself on your lips as you realize it happened to be Fred and Percy, fighting side-by-side.Â
Seems as though Percy made up with the rest of them.Â
Just as you send two death eaters down the stairs and into the path of a few stray hexes, you see Fred get knocked to the floor in your peripheral. The death eater standing over your friend waves his hand up menacingly, no doubt ready to obliterate him.Â
Jumping into action, you aim your wand at the manâs back, âMors Ruinam!â
A large void swallows the unsuspecting man before unceremoniously spitting him out from the ceiling just as Regulus shoots off a particularly nasty hex.Â
You hoped that the Ministry wouldnât be checking your wands after the battle.Â
Fred is still splayed out against the wall when you approach him, face drained of color as he comes to terms with his near-death experience. You extend a hand to help him up, grunting when the boy nearly drags you down in his attempt to rise up.Â
âWhat the hell was that?â He exclaims, eyes suddenly wide and bright.Â
Leave it to the Weasley twins to bounce back at light speed.Â
âJust a fun little dark spell.â You flash him a small relieved smile.Â
He grins and claps your shoulder, âWicked!âÂ
Percy makes his way over to the three of you with a nod, dark circles jumping out from his face as he slowly gestures for you all to make your way further up the castle.Â
âHave either of you seen Sirius?â You ask, eyes trailing to focus on the wisps of fire that peeked through the cracks of the ceiling.Â
âReckon heâs with Remus and Tonks.â Fred supplies, glancing back to give Regulus a confused look. You nod and cough into your fist, eyes avoiding Fredâs as you deign him with an answer of your own, âUh, this is myâŠboyfriendâŠRegulus.âÂ
Fredâs face splits into a grin and he nearly faceplants on the stairs as he shoots Regulus a knowing look, âDouble wicked.â You roll your eyes, knowing that the next family and friends meeting would be awkward as youâd have to explain how and why you were dating Siriusâ dead brother.Â
Regulus raises his eyebrows in amusement before tangling your fingers together. The journey up to one of the collapsing towers was uneventful from then on, but you were deeply relieved to see that Sirius was still up and running.Â
âPup!â He grins broadly, turning back around for a split second to blast an apparating death eater out of the window. The man makes his way over to you, giving you a brief hug before ruffling his brotherâs hair, âWhereâs Harry?âÂ
Just running amuck with your dead professorâs tears, no biggie.Â
âOff and about. He was fine, last we saw him.â You answer with a hum, eyes catching Remusâ tired ones from across the tower ledge.Â
âWhere is Tonks at?â You wonder aloud.
Sirius hums and twirls to look at his fatigued friend, âShacklebolt. Theyâre off somewhere inside the castle.âÂ
Percy steps forward and huffs quietly, âWe should make our way down. Thereâs no telling how much longer this place will stand.âÂ
Before anyone could make a move to clamber down the stairs, a familiar steely voice hissed through your mind, âYou have fought valiantlyâŠbut in vain. I do not wish this. Every drop of magical blood spilled is a terrible waste. I therefore command my forces to retreat. In their absence, dispose of your dead with dignity. Harry Potter, I now directly speak to you. On this night, you have allowed your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself. There is no greater dishonor. Join me in the forbidden forest and confront your fateâŠâ
A few beats of silence pass and you could hear a few faint pops of apparition echo throughout the perimeter.Â
âThat isn't going to bode well with Harry.â You murmur, and Sirius grimly nods at your words, quickly retreating down the stairs.Â
The walk down to the bustling dining hall is pervaded by a sense of dread and anxiety, all of you still on guard as if expecting a death eater to leap around the corner at any moment. Just as you reach the heavy doors, Harry comes striding towards your little group from the other side of the corridor.Â
Your head perks up at the sight of your friend, but confusion washes over you when you see the hard look in his eyes. His eyebrows are harshly furrowed as he stares down Sirius and Remus, both men looking at each other in confusion before starting to walk over to your friend.Â
âHey uh, Fred, Percy, I think your family is inside.â You cough out, not looking back as you debate on whether or not you should approach your furious friend. Luckily, both Weasley brothers feel the tension in the air and heed your silent request, Fred throwing an arm over his disgruntled brotherâs shoulders as they saunter away.Â
âWhat do you think happened, love?â You mutter, peering over to study Regulusâ expression.Â
He turns to you and hums, âSnape gave Harry his memories earlier, Iâm guessing he saw something he didnât like.âÂ
You raise an eyebrow at the boy and bump your hip against his, âYou know something.âÂ
âI know a lot of things, birdie.â He muses, pressing a hand to your lower back as you both watch on.Â
Harry runs a hand around his lips before he peers up at his godfather and pseudo-uncle, muttering something that has both men flinching back as if he tossed a flame at them. You cross your arms as Harry sighs, seeming to retreat in his tirade, stepping around both men and marching in your direction.Â
You shift to give him a questioning look, but he shakes his head and grabs both you and Regulus by the arm, pushing in between you both as he continues on his war path, âLater.âÂ
You donât think you will ever receive an answer from your friend. Your heart feels like it is being ripped from your body as you stand atop of the ruined stairs along with the remaining survivors, watching as a completely still Harry is being paraded over to you by a river of death eaters.Â
Neville grips the worn sorting hat tightly in his hands, mouth wobbling as he takes in the sight of the approaching forces. Your mouth stretches into a painful line as your eyes zone in on a particularly enthusiastic death eater dancing around beside Voldemortâs strutting figure.Â
âNeville.âÂ
The boy turns to you as you begin to make your way down to him.Â
âI hope you wonât mind if I send her to Merlin,â you whisper as you perch beside him atop a hill of rubble.Â
Neville narrows his eyes at the woman before nodding, âGet to her first. I wonât be able to hold myself back otherwise.âÂ
âDeal. Iâll help you with the Lestrange brothers then.âÂ
Your brief exchange comes to a halt as Voldemort and his forces stop just a few yards shy of you both.Â
Voldemort shoots a feral grin at the crowd before spreading his arms out widely in triumph, âHarry Potter is dead!âÂ
Ginny shoots out from somewhere behind you with a distressed wail, âNO! No!âÂ
Her father barely manages to tug her back as Voldemort hisses, pointing a spindly finger at her, âSilence! Stupid girl.âÂ
You want to snarl at the man, hand slowly wrapping around your wand. Regulus moves out from somewhere in the crowd behind you, placing a hand on your shoulder as he stares down the laughing death eaters.Â
Voldemortâs gloating continues for a few more moments before his eyes flit towards you and Regulus. It seems that world tips on its axis in that moment as the serpentine man stills on the spot before his face shifts to one of rage, the manâs change in demeanor spurring Bellatrix to follow his gaze.Â
âTraitor!â She all but screeches, immediately lifting her wand to aim at Regulus. You react just as quickly, whipping your wand up to blast the woman into the next life, but youâre both distracted by the sound of a few gasps. Reeling over to look at the source of shock, your mouth curls up as you see Harry roll on the ground, standing and firing a spell towards Voldemortâs snake.Â
Bellatrix whips her head to look at Voldemort before becoming further enraged as death eaters begin to flee by the dozen, clearly petrified by your friendâs ability to dodge death.Â
âReggie, cover me!â You yell, taking advantage of Bellatrixâs distracted state. The boy complies immediately, watching your surroundings as he begins to fire spells into the disarrayed crowd of death eaters.Â
âFlipendo!âÂ
Your spell sweeps the demented woman off of her feet, her hair flying wildly as she bounces off of a broken slab of concrete. Explosions ring from all around you as Voldemort begins to take chase behind a fleeing Harry.Â
Bellatrix recovers quickly, clambering around on the ground as she tries to find her wand. You almost want to drag out this one-sided duel to a torturous degree, but petty games had no place amidst war.Â
Pointing your wand at a stone, you swing your arm through the air, âDepulso!â The rugged rock soars through the air before crashing into Bellatrixâs hunched figure, reducing her frantic movements into trembling pulses as she crumbles back down onto the ground.Â
You pace towards her slack body, heart skipping as your mind races. Fuck, you didnât kill her did you?
The womanâs eyes bulge in their sockets as she helplessly stares at your looming figure.Â
âFilthyâŠtraitor.â She mutters with a strained voice, mouth twisting into a repulsive sneer.Â
You huff and shoot a glance towards Regulus, relaxing when you see him occupied with a duel, âStill have the energy to talk, do you?âÂ
The woman doesnât answer, and only continues to gaze at you venomously. Her wand had clattered to the ground just a few feet away, and you faintly smile before kicking the curved stick into a nearby fire.Â
âYou brought this upon yourself. And really, itâs a shame for you that Iâm not Neville,â you grin broadly at the woman, âhe is far more merciful.âÂ
Before the woman can respond, you pace back a few steps before aiming at her, âAnima Redimat.â
The woman gasps shrilly, watching with frightful eyes as the purple spell sinks into her body, âYou-âÂ
âYou recognize it then? The Soul Ripping spell. Iâve heard youâre quite a fan of soul magic.â You hum as she gapes at you, âYouâre not the only one whoâs been around Grimmauld Placeâs library.âÂ
The woman is unable to reply as the effect of the curse kicks off, a faint purple tinge enveloping her body. Bellatrix begins to twitch on the ground, limbs sliding around in a distressful dance before she completely stills, eyes wide and unseeing as her form freezes in a contorted manner.Â
You spin on your heel and slide into the mayhem around the courtyard, firing off an endless flurry of hexes as a tidal wave of adrenaline pushes the world into clarity. Regulus joins you by your side soon after, eyes never once moving to greet his cousinâs lifeless form.Â
As you turn to send off another spell, you still on the spot as you come face-to-face with Narcissa Malfoy.Â
âLady Malfoy.â You greet evenly, moving to blast away a death eater behind her.Â
The woman hardly flinches at your ministrations and continues to stare at you before she finally whispers, âDraco?âÂ
âWith Contessa Zabini and his friends, I sent Blaise off to take care of him earlier.â You reply, sending a binding spell flying from your wand as you see Rabastan Lestrange sprint across the rubble around you.Â
The woman nods and peers at you with relieved eyes, âI see. Perhaps we should have tea one of these days.â Without waiting for a response, she strides away and grabs her husband, apparating out of the battlefield in the blink of an eye.Â
Why did everyone insist on having tea with you? Your stress levels will be off the charts by the end of the day.
âMaking your way up high society, birdie?â Regulus chuckles from beside you, a glint of satisfaction flashing across his eyes as he overpowers his opponent.Â
âA penchant of mine.â You reply, tone glazed with amusement.Â
Regulus shakes his head as he flings his fallen challenger away from him, âTrust me, the grandeur of it fades quickly.âÂ
The battle ensues for a few more beats before crescendoing as two figures suddenly drop down and roll into the middle of the square, driving everyoneâs attention towards the disruption.Â
It seems that time halts in place as Voldemort and Harry gather their bearings, wands raised up as beams of green clash into red, an overwhelming aura of power mounting up into the air. You faintly feel the magic, Voldemortâs smothering signature grappling with Harryâs light and airy one.Â
The junction of power twirls into a vibrating ball of light as you see both men shake to push forward. Voldemort suddenly collapses onto his knees as the magic fades, a tense silence dispelling the air from your lungs as you step forward with bated breath. Harry quickly peers back in shock, and his contrast from Voldemortâs stricken demeanor tells you all you need to know: the tide of the battle has changed.Â
Both men swing their wands forward again, but the power clash is less evident this time as the Dark Lord futilely struggles against Harryâs potent magic. The push-and-pull between the two disintegrates once Voldemort becomes enveloped by his own spell, the green wrapping around his figure like a deflating bubble.Â
The man crumbles to his knees, body gradually going rigid on the spot as his skin begins to flake off into a wisps of ash. The swirl of flying particles reduces the man to nothingness, and you feel like you can breathe again.Â
Voldemort was no more.
Harry steadies himself to his feet before smiling shakily, turning on the spot to greet the confounded faces around him. Sirius and Remus come flying from somewhere in the crowd, examining Harryâs condition as the boy stares off in content.Â
This war was over.
So many years of suffering and struggle finally blooming into a new era, and your friend was at the center of it all.Â
Regulus inhales shakily before turning to face you, seizing your stiff body into his arms when you glance back at him with disbelieving eyes.Â
For the second time that day, he joins your lips together, and you can only claw at his enthusiastic figure helplessly as he crowds you against him. Cheering echoes from all around you as more people begin to pool into the courtyard, cries of victory lifting to the skies and blowing away the gloomy clouds.Â
You cup Regulusâ face as you both slowly disconnect, lips swollen and eyes wide.Â
âI love you, birdie.â He whispers with conviction, hands dropping to grip your waist.Â
Your laugh bubbles into the air with a watery edge, and you try to ignore the tender fulfillment that permeates across your chest, âI love you too, Reg.âÂ
Today you would shed relieved tears and hold the untimely losses close to your heart, but with the battle won, tomorrow would be the beginning of a new chapter for Magical Britain. You would have to begin reconstruction, reelections, and rehabilitationsâmere band-aids for the decades of emptiness that would scar every survivor of the Wizarding Wars, but it would suffice.
The incalculable change was a never-ending battleâeven with Voldemort gone, but at least now you have Regulus by your side. Perhaps if change became too much, you could pay Reine a visit.Â
A vacation or permanent getaway could be in order now, but that seemed like a worry for tomorrow.

Notes: Oh man. Yay for the end of sixth year ? ... haha
The rocky ventricle of the cliff side was far less exciting than the seaside, but there was something beguiling about the dim green shine and wet black rocks of the cave. Harry was careful to maintain steady footing as you all hiked through the damp cave, soon finding a rounded dead end.Â
Before you can question Dumbledore, he whips out a small knife from his robes, spinning on his heel to face you both. A small pang of panic shoots through your body before you realize that your headmaster was cutting his hand and not attempting to maul you both with the ornamental paring knife.Â
Tilting your head, you search the manâs calm expression for an answer, âSir?â Your voice trails off as he swipes his bloodied hand against the rocks beside him.Â
The man turns to you both with an undisturbed smile, âTo gain passage, a payment must be made. Payment intended to weaken the intruder.âÂ
You mask your bewilderment and simply shoot a fleeting glance at Harry, who did not even attempt to suppress his bafflement.Â
As the blood seeps into the crevices of the rocks, the stone wall begins to flake and crumble. Stepping back as the rocks fall towards your feet, you feel your mouth drop open at the newly revealed sight of opaque crystals. The new cave pocket was alight with a dull gleam, displaying a likeness to a troll-size geode.Â
âVoldemort never did skimp with such extravagances.â You muse, ignoring the unimpressed eyebrow raise Harry shoots towards you.Â
As you all clamber over the seemingly endless hills of jagged crystals, you decide to reach out to Regulus, no longer able to ignore the persistent blaring of the hundreds of magical signatures around you.Â
âReg, there are countless different magical signatures in here.âÂ
âI think I might know what this place is.â Regulusâ words are hushed, clearly deep in thought as he tries to untangle the foggy web of memories that Sirius unlocked.
Darting your eyes around the darkness, you nearly slip as your concentration splinters into a dozen different directions.Â
âYou do? How?âÂ
âThe ocean. My human-self was immersed in research on some place called the Crystal Cave. Something about the beach and a hidden horcrux. Since youâre all searching for his horcrux, I can only assume my research was right.â Â
Before you can coax Regulus for more answers, you stop behind Harry as Dumbledore peers across the vast darkness of the water. It seemed as though there was nothing left to explore, the eerily calm body of water expanding far into the void.Â
Closing your eyes, you zone out of the conversation between Dumbledore and Harry, focusing on the overwhelming amount of magical signatures around you that seemed to be screaming for your attention.Â
There was something familiar about the magic, it was almost like the magic around Regulusâ portrait except more potent with a tinge of something you couldnât quite comprehend. Before you have time to contemplate these findings, you open your eyes as you feel a tug on your sleeve.Â
Meeting Harryâs concerned eyes, you realize that Dumbledore had somehow managed to summon a small canoe from the waters and now both men were patiently waiting for you to collect yourself.Â
âSorry.â You whisper, gesturing for Harry to get inside before you. Dumbledore simply assesses you with a thoughtful look before turning to face the dark waters as you shakily step into the canoe.Â
The journey across the waters is surprisingly serene, and you had half the mind to be cautious of enemies hidden in the darkness around you. It was troubling that you all hadnât stumbled across any serpentine puzzles or tremendous creatures.Â
If this place truly contains a horcrux, it would be best to be on guard. Underestimating Voldemort would only lead you to a swift death.Â
As the canoe reaches the edge of a crystal island, you all part from the delicate boat quietly. Most of the journey had been spent in tense silence and you were beginning to get a sinking feeling from the cave, as if there was a large chunk of mystery you wouldnât be privy to for a while.Â
The three of you clamber towards the top of the crystal mound, circling around a particular crystal that emerged to form a basin. The depression at its center contained a cloudy liquid, an inky black fog swirling in the center to conceal the contents at the bottom. Dumbledore swipes his hand over the liquid, clearly trying to vanish it with magic.Â
You feel confusion wash over you as the liquid warps under the pressure before merely repelling his hand.Â
Dumbledore raises his head to look at Harry before turning to your questioning eyes, âIt has to be drunk.âÂ
Stepping back from the basin, you nearly topple over as Regulusâ voice loudly rings in your head, voice strained with panic, âDonât drink it! I remember now. The Dark Lord â he brought Kreacher here and did something to him. Kreacher barely made it out alive, but he was frenzied and told human-me he had drunk something.â
Regulusâ words come out in a huge rush and your nerves prickle from his uncharacteristic loss of composure.Â
âSir. I donât think you should drink it.â Your words have both men turning towards you, clearly seeing no other way to access the horcrux. Biting your lip in contemplation, you decide to elaborate, âHeadmaster, Iâm sure you are already aware of my companion. He told me that the concoction nearly killed his house elf.âÂ
Dumbledore seems to consider your words before he drops his gaze back down into the basin, âI see. However, there seems to be no other way.â
Harry seems to be alarmed by your words and steps forward, âBut sirââÂ
Dumbledore holds up a hand and closes his eyes in resignation, âConditions. There are conditions for you both that I failed to impart to you before we ventured here.â He opens his eyes and narrows them, âIf something is to happen, you both must save yourselves. Do not worry about me.â
You share a look with Harry, before you reluctantly nod in agreement. They were not the most difficult conditions youâve ever been given, between your headmaster and Harry, you would pick your friend, always.Â
As Dumbledore and Harry fall into a hushed conversation about the conditions and the liquid, you slowly drift into your thoughts again. It didnât make sense what you were feeling, how were there so many magical signatures around even with no sign of actual magical beings? You wanted to ask Regulus for help, but you knew that the boy likely knew nothing past what he told you.Â
Exhaling shakily, you watch as Dumbledore scoops up some of the liquid before drinking it. The reaction is almost instantaneous, your eyes widen as you see his eyes darken, choked noises escaping his dry lips as he lightly convulses.Â
âProfessor? Professor!â Harryâs concerned words grow louder as the man grunts loudly, shaking more violently on the spot before tumbling down onto the ground. You lunge forwards, reaching out futilely as Dumbledore continues to grunt and jerk. It seemed as though he was no longer even aware of his surroundings, too enraptured by what the liquid was doing to his body and mind.Â
Swallowing harshly, you feel fear prickle through your body as Dumbledore thrashes around before stilling suddenly. Harry turns to you briefly and your heart clenches at the sight of his horrified expression.Â
Seeming to ground himself, Dumbledore sits up and jerks a hand towards the basin. Harry seems to understand what the man is trying to say and he rushes back to bring more of the liquid.Â
You stay next to Dumbledore, helplessly muttering assurances to the man as he seems to be dragged back into his haze, beginning to groan and plead for something. Harry is able to keep his composure for the most part and continues to feed Dumbledore the concoction, rushing back and forth to try and empty the basin quickly.Â
âItâs my fault!â Dumbledoreâs wails are sure to haunt your dreams for the next coming months, and youâre faintly aware of the tears blurring your vision. It was one thing to face blood-thirsty creatures and other wizards in battle, it was another thing to be completely helpless in the face of psychological torment. You were barely strong enough for the former, you had very little training to cope with the latter.Â
In the flurry of your panic, youâre unaware that youâve been flooding your mind link with anxiety until you feel a sudden wave of comfort being nudged toward you by Regulus. The warm feeling of his magic wrapping around yours grounds you and you make note to thank him later. Shaking your head, you push aside your dread and focus on the task at hand.
Just as your mind clears, you see Dumbledore cease in his hysteria, feeling Harry lean down towards the man from next to you. You both release an exhale of relief as your headmaster seems to be fully aware again, his eyes no longer glassy and unseeing.Â
âWater.â His croak comes out dry and you shoot up from your spot to clamber towards the basin, eyes widening in relief as you see a pendant laying at the bottom.Â
It worked, you had the horcrux now.Â
Wrapping your fingers around the object, youâre struck with confusion almost immediately. The locket had no magical trace or signature whatsoever.Â
âWait. Harry-â Your words get caught in your throat as you turn around and see Harry standing still, attention drawn to something in the water. Bringing the locket up to your face, you scrutinize it further, still feeling no residual dark magic.Â
Gripping the chain tightly, you slowly pull it over your head and tuck it underneath your shirt, not perturbed by potential dangers as you realize it was practically just an ordinary necklace.Â
You had seen cursed necklaces before, and you were fairly confident that it wouldnât toss you into the air like Katie Bell or try and choke you to death.Â
Great, you all suffered for nothing.Â
âLumos Maxima!â Harryâs shout distracts you from your thoughts and you begin to walk toward him, still not understanding what he was seeing. As you near the edge of the island, you gasp as you feel an onslaught of magic suddenly crash into you.Â
Stumbling back, you watch as pale, gaunt figures begin to claw their way from the waterâs surface and toward you both. The grisly creatures were all milky, but you could see some distinguishing differences between them all.Â
What disturbed you most though was the fact that you could feel faint magic lingering around them. As you backed away, you realized that aside from the numerous unique signatures, there was a darker, suffocating magic that blanketed them all.Â
Your mind started racing â They were puppets. Reanimated using magic. Not corpses, but not living. They were people. Perhaps a branch of necromancy.
It all clicked. âInferi,â You gasp and grab Harryâs arm, dragging him towards a stunned Dumbledore. Â
The inferi were far more harrowing in real life than in pictures from your textbooks. You could see the sunken skin that seemed to bloat around protruding bones, and wisps of hair that sprouted unevenly from their bulbous heads.Â
Harry begins to fire off spells at the army of inferi and you reach around your jacket for your wand, eyes widening in panic as you realize they were surrounding you.Â
âFire! Harry, they fear fire!â Your shout is drowned out by Harryâs yelling and you groan in frustration. Grabbing your wand, you thrust it up and swing your arm over your head, âPluvia Ignis!â
The heat of fire envelops you immediately and you blearily squint your eyes as a colossal ring of fire blazes up toward the caveâs ceiling, licking at the muggy air. Continuing to whirl your wand, you let out a sigh of relief as you see that you hadnât burnt your companions to a crisp. The heat had the inferi receding back into the waters, but your celebration is cut short as you realize that the ring of fire was now consuming nearly every inch of the cave.Â
Dumbledore stumbles towards you, one arm slung over Harryâs shoulders as the boy helps him find his footing. Ceasing your movements, you move to join the two as you watch the last few inferi dive into the water.Â
Furrowing your brows, you feel a sudden pull toward the water. The pull was coming from your pocket and your hand, and you drew your hand back as you saw your finger gravitate toward the dark pool. Your ring was being attracted towards the water for some strange reason.Â
Feeling the tug persist, you incline your head to look at your pocket.Â
No, it wasnât just your ring, but Regulusâ portrait as well. Â
âReg?âÂ
âThereâs something wrong. I feelâŠâ The boyâs words are shaky, but you can feel how his confusion mirrors yours as he trails off.
You have little time to ruminate further as youâre soon being dragged off by Harry as Dumbledore parts the flames. The inferno drags away into two tall walls, clearing a direct path back toward the other side of the cave.Â
The journey back passes by in a blur as youâre busy with making sure Dumbledore wouldnât keel over and die, while Harry moves the canoe along as quickly as he could. All along the way out, the tugging gradually faded and soon the conundrum was buried away in your thoughts.Â
As soon as you all stumble out of the cave, Dumbledore grabs both of your elbows and apparates away from the shore. The warping of your body through the travel has you disoriented and mildly irritated, and you were mentally cursing your past-self for all the decisions that had amounted to the events of that day.Â
The three of you touched down at the astronomy tower with a loud pop and muffled groans, your knees nearly buckling from exhaustion as soon as your heels slammed against the wooden boards.Â
Harry helps guide Dumbledore to sit down, the man further weakened by the apparition. As you crouch down in front of the enervated headmaster, you both can barely make out what the man is mumbling.Â
âSeverusâŠSeverus,â Dumbledore wheezes out. You share a look with Harry and usher him away with a wave of your hand, âIâll stay and watch over him. You hurry and find Snape.â
Harry doesnât look entirely convinced, but seeing no better alternative, complies with your words and quickly disappears behind a pillar and into the darkness. Before you can turn around to focus your attention on the pallor man next to you, you hear light footsteps slowly ascend the staircase.Â
Turning your body to fully face the stairway, you reach for your wand and tense up in anticipation. To your surprise, you see Dracoâs figure slowly round towards you both with his wand drawn.Â
âDraco?â Your words are painted in disbelief, and you feel a pit lodge in your throat at the slytherinâs frantic eyes and white-knuckled grip.Â
âReg, Draco is going to attack us.â You clench your jaw and keep your hand on the hilt of your wand.Â
âDefend yourself, forget about Dumbledore.â Regulusâ words are firm, with such strong conviction that you almost get whiplash thinking about how fraught he had just sounded in the cave.Â
Shuffling away from the headmaster, you stand up shakily and draw your wand out to your side, not exactly rising up to the challenge, but ready to defend yourself. You were confident that you could hold up just fine against Draco.Â
âL/N?â Draco sounds a tad surprised, as though he hadnât seen you up until that moment, âWhat are you doing here?â His voice is now as panicked as his face, and you see his hostile demeanor falter slightly.Â
Holding up one of your hands, you try to reason with the boy, âDraco, donât do this. I know, okay. I know.â
Your words seem to only incense the boy as he practically snarls at you, âYou donât know! You donât know what itâs like to be chosen!â With his last words, the boy is tearing the sleeve of his left arm upwards, thrusting his dark mark into your gobsmacked face.Â
As your eyes drop down in resignation, you make eye contact with an alarmed Harry who was crouched on the floor below. Subtly shaking your head at the boy, you drag your eyes back up to look at Draco.Â
The boyâs face was now twisted in something akin to pain, and you felt pity root you to your spot. Before you can open your mouth to speak, your attention is grabbed by the sound of a door opening in the distance.Â
Frowning, you shuffle back to block Dumbledore, âYouâre not alone?âÂ
âA passage. Vanishing cabinets that I repaired.â Dracoâs words are embittered, but you knew it wasnât towards you. .Â
Noddin, you shrug one shoulder at him, commending him for his ingeniousness. Seeing that you were not going to reply, he lowers his wand slightly, âI donât need you. Go. You need to leave. I only want him,â he jabs his chin in the direction of Dumbledore, who was still slumped on the floor.Â
A large part of you did want to run, but you didnât think you could ever look Harry in the eyes again if you did.Â
âRun, birdie. Listen to him. Protect yourself.â Regulusâ pleads make your finger twitch and the urge to abandon your incapacitated headmaster grows stronger.Â
âYou know I canât, Draco. Please donât do this.â You step forward and reach out to him.Â
The boy shakes his head fervently, âI have to. I have to kill him, or else heâs going to kill me.â His voice cracks with the last confession, and you feel your jaw clench at the cruelty of the situation.Â
âI can help you. Blaise and I, we can protect you.â Your words are soft and you see Draco frown in conflict, eyes shining from unshed tears. He seems to almost believe your words â that you could possibly get him out of this predicament, but any semblance of resolve disappears as footsteps echo from the stairwell again.Â
Looking down at the hole in the floor, you see that Harry is gone, possibly hiding or getting help. You shakily exhale before looking back at Draco. The slytherin looks at you like youâre about to be walked to your execution, and you can feel a stone of dread sink in your stomach.Â
The first person to pop up from the staircase has your heart stuttering from fear, âBellatrix.â Your voice is surprisingly firm, and you almost want to pat yourself on the back from how well you were standing your ground.Â
The woman in question whips her head towards you and lets out a booming cackle, hands clutching at her stomach like she was just pronounced the heir to an enormous fortune.Â
âIckle, Y/N,â The crazed woman approaches Draco, peering over his shoulder, âand, oh! Dumbledore! Two sitting ducks!â She breaks out into more laughter and you avert your eyes from her hysterics to look at a distressed Draco.Â
âY/N, leave. You canât take on Bellatrix, she is utterly insane. Apparate somewhere, please.â Regulusâ voice seems to fade out in your head as you go still from shock when you see Fenrir Greyback make his way towards you. Just as you regain enough sense to try and turn tail, the werewolf is hauling your figure towards him in a bruising grip, slamming you up against a nearby pillar.Â
You gasp in shock and grit your teeth to stop from screaming as the werewolf moves a hand to grip your throat. Before you can try and hex the beast, a monotonous voice breaks through the tense atmosphere, âEnough.âÂ
Darting your eyes away, you almost want to cry in relief as you see a stone-faced Snape make his way out from the shadows. The grip on your neck slackens and you try to find your bearings by gripping the ridges of the pillar behind you.Â
The rumors that Greyback was horrifying were not exaggerated by any means.Â
Before you can breathe out in relief, figuring that your ex-Potions professor likely would spare your life, Greyback grips one of your arms tightly and stuffs his other hand in your jacket pocket, tearing himself away from you, Regulusâ portrait held victoriously above his head.Â
âNo!â Your scream is guttural, feral even, but the werewolf simply grins widely at your distress, pointed teeth menacingly peeking from his mouth. You try to lunge for the werewolf, wand drawn, but you feel someone slam into you before you can get far.Â
Thrashing against the figure, you cry out as they twist your hand behind your back, making you drop your wand. Before you can plead with Morgana to send you the strength to hurl your assailant through the wall, you hear a voice harshly whisper in your ear, âStop it. Youâre going to get yourself killed.âÂ
You tense from shock and whip your head around to see a frustrated Draco glaring down at you in warning. Pursing your lips together, you feel tears gather on your waterline as you turn back and see Greyback handing the portrait to a delighted Bellatrix.Â
âFoolish child!â Her words stung, but your snarl only seems to amuse her, âAnd baby cousin, how disappointing.â Bellatrixâs smile is vindictive, like pure acid, as she appraises Regulus.Â
âReg. Iâm sorry! Please, Iâm sorry!â Your frantic words pour out as tears begin to slide down your cheeks, eyes blurring violently from the endless onslaught of tears.Â
âItâs okay, birdie. Itâs not your fault,â Regulus' words are loud in your head, and you release a strangled sob, feeling Draco tighten his grip on you at the sound, âI donât think Iâve ever liked someone as much as Iâve liked you.âÂ
Blinking away the tears, you can barely process what was happening as Bellatrix suddenly draws her wand, âBombarda!â
Regulusâ portrait explodes in a spray of gold, pieces of the frame clattering around the floor, and you see the canvas flutter to the floor between you and the madwoman.Â
âReggie!â You try to throw Draco off of you, but the boy overpowers you and keeps his iron grip on you.Â
Regulus turns his gaze towards you and you see him flash a small smile at you, one full of longing and sorrow, âIâll find you again, my love.âÂ
âIncendio!â Bellatrixâs gleeful yell echoes throughout your head, deafening you, but youâre sure it was your screams that could be heard from the other side of the castle. You feel Draco flinch behind you, and you drop down onto the ground, taking the slytherin down with you.Â
You hunch over, tipping your head onto the floor as you begin to sob, incoherently mumbling as the death eaters around you seem to direct their attention to Dumbledore.Â
You knew you should have kicked Draco to next Yule and grabbed your wand to defend the weakened headmaster, but you could barely tie together a coherent thought, and when you did, it only revolved around Regulus.Â
Regulus â who was gone, for good this time. Gone because of you.Â
It would be a euphemism to describe the feeling as emptiness, because what you were feeling transcended any feeling you could precisely pinpoint. Bellatrix might as well have thrust her claws into your chest and wrung your heart to a bleeding pulp.Â
You wanted to bang your head against the wood and beg for a redo of the entire day.Â
It was all a terrible dream.Â
Yes, it was nothing more than a figment of your imagination. That made sense, you would never be that weak, right?Â
Yes. You were dreaming.
This had to be a nightmare.Â
Opening your eyes, you feel your nails digging into your head just as black dots start to swim in your vision. You couldnât find the strength to lift your head up.Â
It all had to have been a dream. Otherwise, why would it be so silent around you? You could sense it, nobody was in the room with you anymore.Â
The dark spots start to move more vigorously, blooming across the wood and overtaking your vision. As your sight waned and the rushing of blood in your ears settled, you heard a muffled voice reach you, âShit! Y/N!âÂ
And then you knew no more than darkness.Â
Yes, it had to be a dream. Just a bad dream.Â
