i was doing research on donna’s life because i’m writing a thesis on the secret history and i came across this beautiful article that delves into her private life a bit more, revealing that there are a lot of personal stories she included in the book, such as her love for proust, which, in fact, isn’t the only thing she shares in common with richard as her voice because indistinguishable from his, since she spent 9 years writing a story from his point of view. people that know her described her as a great storyteller and an eloquent person who was rather quiet in real life, but also an insomniac smoking in her room at 4am and that awfully reminded me of richard as well. they way her looks were described resemble camilla - boyish haircut and boys’ suits, which is the similarity they have regarding appearance, but another thing that binds them together is the fact that donna herself was in a college clique similar to the greek class, except that she was surrounded by a couple of other literature students, making her the only girl in the group! they even had an eccentric professor picky about his students in a way that julian was. her accent, is in a way, southern yet british sounding, which is how she described francis’s accent. what’s beautiful about all of this is that it seems as if she didn’t do it on purpose but rather that her life became intertwined with the character’s life, blurring the lines between the two to the point that not even donna could distinguish it. as a writer, i know how easy it is for that to happen and how beautiful it is to look back on your manuscript and notice how you left pieces of yourself in it.
I just love this page. Atsushi realizes that he almost lost someone who he never took the time to understand. this boy, this stranger, who has burrowed so deep into his mind, who has been completely incomprehensible to him, who died for him, is, beneath it all, just like him. they're the same. they always have been.
its regret. about the words he's said, the wound's he's inflicted, the fact that he did not see the boy right in front of him. he walked away, a specter, misunderstood, never being told that its okay for him to live. okay for him to exist in this world.
for the first time, he thinks he understands akutagawa ryuunosuke and its breaking his heart. he's breaking his heart.
i had a dream i worked in an underwater restaurant and people kept ordering ice in their drinks and then getting mad at me when it would float away. and i’d tell them beforehand that the ice would float away & they’d be like lol no that’s not how it works just give me the ice. I’m fighting customer service battles never seen before
The Shippuden Naruto-Sasuke reunion gets funnier the more you get to know Sasuke.
" I didn't kill you on a whim, I'll kill you now though"- This boy has a Superman level no-kill code that he adheres to with too much conviction. He's a ninja. He was raised to kill, and no one would blame him if he did. Yet his only aim is Itachi.
Jumping down the ravine to hold Naruto- We see later on he doesn't like people touching him. He's basically screamed it in people's faces & is not shy about telling people to move it. He doesn't seek out physical touch either & he has a million long-range attacks.
He jumped down because he wanted to hold Naruto. That's it. He has never gotten this close to anyone without a practical reason & Sasuke was much faster than Naruto. He did that side-hug and whispered in his ear for no reason other than he wanted to be close.
Getting distracted during the fight- he has planned out step-by-step every fight he's entered with a bunch of failsafes. He's constantly thinking seven steps ahead. He was utterly distracted by Naruto. That's IT. Naruto was the only factor in these fights that got him off guard
The first episode sets up this reunion like Sasuke has gone too far down a dark path when in reality he knew exactly qhat he wanted, had plans to escape Orochimaru on his own, he ended up taking down THREE big threats and like 20% of the Akatsuki. On his own. That reunion was Sasuke playing a part to convince Orochimaru to leave Naruto alone, to convince himself that he didn't care(though he desperately did), and to make Naruto stay away.
Like most of it was to save himself & Naruto the pain.
He's such a dramatic lil boy
James Potter who lies when Lily asks where his star tattoo came from.
James who says that it was just something dumb he and Sirius did one night when they were drunk.
James who goes to ‘run an errand’ and cries in his car, because it wasn’t some stupid drunken night, because he remembers Regulus drawing it himself for the artist to tattoo onto him. Because Regulus kissed it every time he could, because that tattoo is not just ink in his skin. No. That tattoo bleeds Regulus’s love, and James’s heart bleeds with it.
Begging people to read into the gothic conventions used in “The Secret History” instead of repeatedly discussing the queerness (which is ultimately just bad representation and nothing more).
Edmund Corcoran is called “Bunny” to show the corruption of innocence - which was a gothic fear used in novels like Wuthering Heights and Frankenstein. Bunny is innocence, not for his morality but rather because he is ignorant and able to live outside reality with zero consequences (until the ol’ murder and he is corrupted by panic, guilt and death)
Henry Winter is Richard Papen’s double as he represent all the inner darkness within Papen he fails to express. Papen helps them poison Bunny and is complicit throughout the murders but doesn’t take direct action. This extends back to Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde but I don’t want to discuss that novella rn. You can read this as Papen being Winter’s double, but elaborate because I don’t necessarily agree.
Henry is the epitome of a Byronic hero which was used in Frankenstein and so much more. He dies in such a way in order to solidify his status as a Byronic hero - in my opinion anyhow.
If you google “gothic literature conventions” you will begin to see TSH as less of a “dark academic aesthetic” novel, and more of a gothic horror inspired by Victorian literature okay thank you and goodnight.

Fanfiction writers be like:
"here's the immensely time consuming 100K word novel-length passion project I'm working on between my real life job and family! It eats up hundreds of hours of my one and only life, causes me emotional harm, and I gain basically nothing from it! Also I put it on the internet for free so anyone can read if they want. Hope you love it!" :)
