Negan had become resigned to his fate for once. As walkers surrounded him, he slipped down the side of the tree he was leaned against, hands shaking as he hid his face from the dead so he didn’t have to watch them approach.

They’d left the Sanctuary early that morning to go on a supply run for medical equipment. Straightforward job, not a lot of security needed. They had enough ammunition between them to kill thirty walkers, but it wasn’t a sizeable place, so he knew they wouldn’t need it all.

Three security team members, Negan, and his beautiful wife, the definition of perfection: Carl Grimes. Being a guy, he was technically Negan’s husband, but he loved calling him wife just to piss him off.

Carl had lain in bed all morning, stretched out and naked under the sheets after another night of making love. The presence of the young man beside him was enough to have Negan asleep for hours too, but when he finally woke, he knew they had to go on the supply run, so he slid his hand down under the sheets, smacking Carl’s ass gently to wake him.

The little groan that escaped the boy’s lips told him it worked.

Green fields untainted by the horror of the new world contrasting with a bright blue sky and a beating sun that made everything warmer. It was a perfect landscape to gaze at, with Carl draped over his lap, breathing softly onto his neck-

He remembered the truck flipping out of control, over and over and over. He’d held Carl tightly, cradling his head in a desperate attempt to keep him safe, and let himself be thrown around the back of the truck, taking the hits to his body with no care for anything but keeping his young husband alive.

Soon enough the truck stopped rolling, and he could hear voices outside in the haze of an injured head. One of his eardrums must have ruptured too, as he could only hear from one side.

"Negan?" Carl’s soft voice reached him from his lap, and he looked down to see the kid shaking in his arms.

Negan had never seen the kid look terrified, but he did now. His eye was wide, watering with tears that hadn’t yet fallen, and his lip was trembling like the first time the man had told him to take the bandage off his face. The sight made his heart break, but he was thankful that he couldn’t see any immediate head injuries. At least none that were visible.

"It’s alright, darling. It's over now. Are you okay?"

The brunette nodded and Negan’s heart lifted, the weight of worry for him leaving his chest until he heard gunshots outside, shouting filling the space around them. No one came through the door to the truck's container, and then the shooting stopped, and the door opened.

Carl's second in command, Rory, was standing there, his chest heaving and blood running down the side of his face.

"They shot out our tires, sir, there was a barricade waiting for us. The others are dead, and the attackers." He managed to get out his words before leaning against the truck, coughing up blood.

Negan frowned, helping Carl out of the container and then getting Rory to sit down, checking him for injuries. He found a bullet wound through his abdomen and sighed, shaking his head at Carl who kneeled down.

“I’m sorry, Rory."

The soldier shook his head quickly, coughing again. More blood poured from the side of his mouth.

"It was my duty to protect you, sir, it's okay." He gave him a weak smile, ripping the shark tooth necklace from around his throat and forcing it into Carl's hand.

"Give it to Angela, please Carl."

Negan watched as his husband nodded before putting a bullet in the man's temple. Then they heard a groan. They both whipped around with their shotguns, alert, and shot at the walker, taking it down easily, but then there were more groans.

The dead were approaching from the field in front of them, countless walkers that had gone unnoticed until they'd dealt with immediate threats, and now they were getting closer. Negan shook his head, looking at Carl.

"We don’t have enough bullets."

"Run." Carl insisted before they both took off into the woods, dodging trees and the dead as more walkers came out of the shadows, following the sound of the gunshots from moments ago.

They ran for a mile at least, and Negan looked behind him every few minutes to make sure Carl was following, but then he was gone. The man's eyes widened when he didn’t see his husband following him, panic setting in. He could still see walkers though, so he had to keep running. The kid would find him eventually, it would be fine, he was probably just hidden in the trees somewhere.

That's what he kept telling himself, until he heard a scream somewhere in the distance that sounded far too much like Carl, and his universe crumbled around him.

So now Negan curled up in a ball, wishing he would die faster. He didn’t want to live in a world without Carl, he'd let the Sanctuary burn if it meant being without the pain that came with the boy's death.

He'd fallen so hard for him over the past two years. They'd killed together, ate together, made love more times than Negan could count. Fuck, he'd given his whole heart to Carl without question, his whole being, and now he was gone. He couldn’t handle the idea, the concept of a world without the younger man totally foreign. He didn’t want to live in a world like that-

"Negan!"

The Saviour froze, hearing Carl's voice and wondering if he'd gone mad. He assumed it was an echo of the past, a cruel trick his mind was playing on him in the last moments before the walkers ripped him apart. Then he heard gunshots.

Gunshots all around him, like a machine gun firing, and he looked up with a wary expression to see Carl holding said machine gun, shooting everything in his path that threatened his older husband while covered in fresh blood.

When all the walkers were dead, Negan didn’t even think before he stood up and ran at the shorter man, picking him up and squeezing tightly around his slim figure. He kissed him without taking another breath, gripping the back of his neck so the kid didn’t pull away and desperately latching onto his lips, savouring the taste he never thought he would have again.

Carl was frozen for a moment, confused since he had no idea what had been running through Negan’s mind, before he kissed back easily, letting the man have a rough moment in the middle of the woods he now knew were empty after killing a man to get his machine gun.

They kissed like that for what felt like a lifetime before Negan finally pulled away, leaning his forehead on Carl’s and keeping the tight grip he had on his waist, hugging him to the point where he was making the boy lose breath.

“Don’t ever die, Carl, please.” It almost sounded like a whimper, and it made Carl realise just how worried the man had been when he disappeared.

He pressed a gentle kiss to his mouth this time, shaking his head.

"I won’t die, don’t worry." He reassured, hugging him back in the quiet of the empty forest.
