The morning before your appointment with David Hale, Chibs marries you. The service takes place in front of a justice of the peace in an empty courtroom and is witnessed by Tig and your law partner Al. They watch as Chibs takes the ring off his own finger before slipping it onto yours. The gesture is symbolic because you won’t be allowed jewellery where you’re going.

The marriage works on two levels. Chibs can’t stand the idea of you disappearing from his life without committing to you in that way and it divides your assets. He gets half of everything you own, leaving him with a financial stability that he has never wanted, but you insist he has. You want him to be taken care of when you go away.

There is no afterparty, no toasts, no first dance. Instead you end up at the tattoo parlour on Main, where Cassandra engraves matching botanical designs across both your ring fingers. Yours has leaves and his is barren.

Afterwards he takes you home and he strips off his shoulder holster, setting his gun down on the nightstand before he sits on the edge of the bed and draws you to him. He presses his face into the junction between your legs, his hands slipping underneath the hem of the white lace dress you’re wearing, his thumb skirting over the garter belt as he inhales deeply. He can’t believe this is the last time he gets to be with you, that after this the intimacy of your relationship will be reduced to quick fucks on second hand sheets, him peeling away the orange jumpsuit from your skin.  

“I never wanted this for you.” He whispers, his eyes stinging as your fingers comb lightly through his hair. “Please don’t do this…”

But his protests fall on deaf ears because it all comes down to this.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice your Queen to remain a King.

Your car finally stopped working. It has been making a noise for a couple of days now, but you decided to ignore it and pretend you couldn’t hear it, and now it’s decided to pack in. You have had this car since you passed your driving test, and it’s never broken down before. Taking your phone out of your purse you called the local garage ‘Teller Morrow’ and asked them to send a recovery vehicle out to bring you and your car back into town.

You moved to Charming 6 months ago, but have kept yourself to yourself and stayed out of people’s business. You speak if you are spoken to, and are always polite, but you don’t go out of your way to make conversation. You work as a shopkeeper and actually really enjoy it. You don’t speak much to people, but you do love people watching. And being a cashier, you look at and meet new people every single day.
