Pairing: Modern!Aemond Targaryen x Reader
Summary: Back home in King's Landing for the holidays, Aemond Targaryen goes against his better judgement and downloads Hinge.
Warnings: Swearing, drinking (barely mentioned), mention of high school (lol). For the purposes of this Modern AU, I made Rhaenyra's kids the cousins of Alicent's instead of nephews and I will be aggressively ignoring the canon incest for this story LMAO.
Rating: G
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 |
Word Count: 1790
A/N: Hey everyone! This is going to be a new three part series which will be published today, Friday, and Christmas Eve (I might also do a New Years installation if people are interested). I'll essentially be posting the events of this story "as they happen" so they'll be set on the day they're published. This was originally going to be two parts but I got carried away and here we are. This first part is fully SFW, nothing spicy--but we WILL be getting to spice in parts 2 and 3. Also, I edited this a grand total of one time so sorry for any errors. Like & Reblog if you'd like! :)

Aemond Targaryen didn't do dating apps.
To be fair, he really didn't do much dating in the first place.
Seeing the hundreds of dates–and tens of short-term girlfriends that always ended poorly–that his brother had to show for his time on Tinder only strengthened his conviction that such things were, to put it simply, not for him.
Perhaps it was boredom with being stuck home for the holidays, but somehow Helaena had bugged him enough about it and now, here he sat, a hypocrite, watching as his cousin and sister, Luke and Helaena, poured over his phone. His one condition for creating a profile had been that Helaena had to be the one to piece together a profile for him from the few photos he had of himself, and she was more than happy to oblige.
“You never let anyone take any pictures of you!” Helaena complained, “the best I can find outside of these three look like they come from found footage.” She waggled the screen with his semi-complete profile on it.
Luke giggled at her comment, flopping back on the sofa, taking a large slup of his coca cola.
“Yeah,” he chimed in, “like a cryptid, like Mothman.”
“Isn't it a little late for you to be having caffeine?” Aemond jabbed at his younger cousin, raising his voice just enough for Rhaenyra, Luke's mother, to overhear.
“Luke!”
Right on cue, Rhaenyra whipped her white-haired head about, her accusing stare focused on her son. Luke leapt from the sofa, fleeing immediately, his soda in hand and Rhaenyra hot on his heels.
“Luke, if you cannot get to sleep tonight, so help me-”
Aemond grinned faintly, taking the opportunity to grab his phone from Helaena and bid his own mother a swift goodnight before retreating to his room.
He shut his door behind him, flopping down on his back across his wide bed frame with a huff. He stared at the ceiling for a beat, before he pulled out his phone, reopening the screen to look at the profile Helaena had made for him once again.
She had decided on Hinge for him, telling him that it was “one of the better apps for seriously meeting people”, and had mercifully battled off Luke and Jace’s valiant attempts to sign him up for FarmersOnly.
It wasn't a bad profile, he supposed, flicking through the photos.
Helaena had resorted to a professional headshot he’d had taken the semester prior for his Linkedin as his primary photo, staring the camera down steadily with his eye. Perhaps a bit much for a first picture, he mused, but again, he didn’t have many photos to work with.
The second photo was a slightly unfocused picture of himself, Aegon, Helaena, and their youngest brother Daeron, taken when the family had all flown to Tokyo to drop Daeron off at his expensive international boarding school. Their mother had insisted the whole family join, and they all knew better than to push back against her on such things.
The final picture made Aemond smile: a photo of him, crouching in front of his massive black lab, Vhagar. Her large tongue is licking his face in the picture, his eye squinted shut in suppressed laughter, half leaning away from her, but unmistakably happy.
He liked that picture.
*Someone Liked You! Match to Continue Your Conversation!*
Aemond half-jumped at the notification, slightly surprised that he was getting any likes at all.
He clicked on the profile, scrolling through quickly, skimming her basic information–vegetarian, gym-lover, non-smoker. She was pretty.
*Someone Liked You! Match to Continue Your Conversation!*
Aemond raised an eyebrow, unwillingly enjoying the satisfaction that women found him handsome enough to send likes in the first place.
He clicked the notification, and was immediately frozen by what he saw.
It was you.
Clear as crystal on his screen, beaming at him over the rim of a mug in your first photo.
No way, Aemond Targaryen??
You had commented on the photo of him and Vhagar.
Before he could think twice, he matched with you, his fingers flying over the screen, typing and retyping until he sent:
In the flesh.
He stared at his screen, waiting for typing dots to show up next to your name again.
God it had been so long since he had seen you–since high school graduation, to be exact.
He had been quiet in high school, no surprise there, and hadn’t had many friends. You, on the other hand, had been a member of Aegon’s never ending friend group. Coincidentally, you were also the only one who ever made an effort to include Aemond in the group when Aegon’s mother forced him to include his younger brother.
He had never read into it any more than that–he wasn't stupid enough to think you'd reciprocate the embarrassing crush he'd started to harbor for you, nor was he going to allow himself to resent you for that.
He'd entertained the idea of asking you to prom senior but someone else–decidedly two-eyed–had asked you first.
Aemond hadn't gone to prom that year. He’d unconsciously started avoiding you after graduation, hoping to squash his silly feelings.
But now, here you were.
Home for the holidays?
Your new text read.
Yeah.
Aemond stared at his one word reply, fiddling with his thumbs, trying to come up with something better to say than that.
Still talkative as ever, huh?
He snorted under his breath when he read that, a smile pulling at the corner of his lip.
In a burst of confidence that he would later wonder might have been insanity, Aemond sucked in a sharp breath and sent his next message.
I’m better in person these days, I promise. We should grab a drink tomorrow, if you're free. Would be nice to catch up.
He stared at his phone, tips of his fingers turning paler where he gripped it tightly.
After an eternity, it seemed, you responded.
That sounds amazing :)
-
Aemond felt sick.
His palms were slick with sweat in spite of the cold weather raging outside, and the local bar in which he sat, which had seemed cute at first, now felt like it was suffocating him slowly.
He couldn’t believe how nervous he was. It wasn’t even a date for God’s sake, he kept telling himself, just a chance to reconnect with an old friend.
“Aemond!” He was jerked from his thoughts by your voice from across the room. His lips twitched in recognition, raising his hand in a half wave as you weave your way towards him through the other few tables.
“You made it,” he stood to greet you, tensing briefly when you skipped the hand he offered for you to shake, wrapping your arms around his shoulders instead.
“Sorry,” your voice was muffled in his shoulder, “I know how you feel about hugging,” you drew back just as quickly as you had grabbed him.
“I get one hug, just this once; I haven’t seen you in so long!” You exclaimed, gazing up at him with those big beautiful eyes and fuck he was not over you.
He had so much he wanted to say, he felt like his chest was split in two as he took you in, but instead he grinned back at you.
“Drink?” He quipped.
-
One drink turned to two, which turned to three, the liquid courage helping both of you fall back into an old rhythm with each other again that he had forgotten. It felt nice, he thought, being here with you.
“You’re lying!” you giggled hysterically, slapping a hand over your mouth.
“I’m not!” Aemond insisted, a wide lazy smile stretched across his face, “Baela tore Sunfyre to pieces. Aegon was pissed, and dad made him pay for the shop repairs and new paint job out of his own pocket.”
You snorted into a new peal of laughter at the mental image of Aegon dragging his beloved obnoxious gold motorcycle into the mechanic.
“So he had to publicly confess to a garage of burly mechanics that his cousin caused him to wreck the shit out of the thing because she’s the better biker?” you grinned wickedly, “Baela was always a good egg.”
“Mm,” Aemond hummed in agreement, allowing a moment of silence to settle on the pair of you, his eye flicking across your face.
“So I feel like I have to ask,” you spoke up after a moment of comfortable silence, “what brings you to Hinge?”
“Helaena and Luke.” Aemond answered truthfully.
“Your sister and cousin?” you clarified, teasing, “I think that’s pretty frowned upon, both morally and legally speaking.”
“Not like that–” Aemond was laughing too, the liquor he’d drunk bubbling warm and low in his stomach, “Hel, she forced me to make a profile,” he explained, “said my brooding in the corner was depressing her.”
“You’re still a big brooder, huh?”
Aemond nodded in mock sincerity, pressing a hand to his chest.
“I take my brooding extremely seriously.”
—
Aemond offered to walk you home later, feeling like his head was spinning when you looped your arm through his as the pair of you traipsed the few streets it took to get back to your family’s house.
You were laughing at something he had said again, head thrown back and your nose all scrunched up. The street lights shone in your eyes like stars, your hair catching the sparse snowflakes that had begun to fall at some point during the walk home, the water droplets glimmering in the half-light.
He could only watch you, helplessly feeling as though his heart were swelling too large for his chest.
You were so beautiful it was painful.
“Well,” you spoke up again, stopping your steps in front of your home and dropping Aemond’s arm. He wanted you to put it back.
“I'll see you again before we go back to school, yeah?” you asked him, pushing your hands into the pockets of your coat.
“That sounds great,” Aemond shuffled slightly where he stood, trying to stay warm, “is your number still the same?”
“Mhm!” You answered brightly, “Text me?”
“Of course.”
And then you were hugging him again, chest crushed to his and he could barely breathe as he tried to ignore the feeling of your breasts pressed to him and the warmth of your hands pressed into his shoulders. You let him go quickly–too quickly in his opinion–and grinned at him once more, bidding him goodnight and walking to your door, leaving him alone on the sidewalk.
He watched you shut the door behind you safely before he turned, making his way down the street, back to his family's home, trying not to think about your eyes under the streetlights or the shape of your lips.
God, he was fucked.
