Do you think ZhuZhi-Lang is a prototype Wen Ning? What was the narrative point of him dying in the end?
Hello Anon!
I’d definitely say that Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning are two socially awkward “monster” boys cut from the same cloth. Zhuzhi-Lang’s character does seem to provide the inspiration for Wen Ning as his MDZS counterpart, with their arcs even centering around similar hardships yet yielding contrasting endings.
At just a glance, in Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning, we see two young men who despite being belonging to the most powerful clans are still outcasts derided by society: Zhuzhi-Lang for his hideous snake-man appearance and Wen Ning for being a timid stutterer, a “Wen-dog” and of course, the much-feared Ghost General. Adding to Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning’s negative public images is the fact that they are the notorious right-hand men (and wingmen!) of someone regarded as society’s villain. And of course, we know that those so-called villains, Tianlang-Jun and Wei Wuxian, are far more complex than what society passes on as “facts”. Much like their right-hand men, both Wei Wuxian and Tianlang-Jun are misunderstood figures who, despite not being entirely innocent, have been shown to actually be victims of society first.
On this point, what’s observed through all these characters is the ever-recurring MXTX theme that the world, and people in particular, aren’t so black-and-white. What’s passed on as “truth” often isn’t accurate nor complete, and humanity exists amongst outcasts who are dehumanized. Sometimes, perhaps unsurprisingly, the ones who are able to recognize that fact most clearly are the very people considered “evil” by society. (Outcasts unite!)
Through the important relationships Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning have with Tianlang-Jung and Wei Wuxian respectively, we see the sides of them that tend to be ignored by society, arguably precisely because of how human those qualities are.
Namely, they are notably two people struggling with their sense of self-worth after a lifetime of being looked down upon…Given that, it is understandable how they both can’t help but become (perhaps excessively) attached towards those who treat them kindly. For Zhuzhi-Lang, being nonchalantly taken in & given a human form/name by Tianlang-Jun and inadvertently saved by Shen Qianqiu was more than enough to earn them both a lifetime of selfless loyalty from him. For Wen Ning, the simple act of Wei Wuxian praising and standing up for him at one time left such an impact that it led him to risk his own safety to help Wei Wuxian during the Lotus Pier massacre and subsequently become one of his most devoted allies/followers.
As quoted by Zhuzhi-Lang, the phrase “a drop of kindness is repaid as a gushing spring” appears to be the philosophy that these two are dedicated to following.

HERE IT IS LADS! THE ULTIMATE CULIMINATION OF ALL THOSE WEDDING JOKES 💀💀💀 AT THIS POINT I AM CONVINCED WORD OF HONOR AND ITS CAST IS JUST ONE MASSIVE FEVER DREAM
So Gong Jun was invited to Chuang2021 as a guest (he did a really good job by the way!! 🥺) and throughout the event he would occasionally bring up a certain "Zhang-Laoshi"
So here he's being asked who he would form a boygroup with if ever given the chance,
*btw he ONLY referred to him as Zhang-Laoshi throughout the event and never by his fullname! It's hilarious that the Tencent subbing team just automatically subbed it with ZZH's complete name. Why are they so sure it's ZZH, huh?? There must be tons of other Zhang-Laoshis out there 😂
What he said was, "和我最匹配的人也就只能是张老师了” and I'd translate it as "the person most compatible with me can only be Zhang-Laoshi" or "the best match for me can only be Zhang-Laoshi"
The term he used was 匹配 and it is LITERALLY
He basically called him his perfect match! 最匹配! GONG JUN PLS NOBODY WAS ASKING THAT! HE DID NOT HAVE TO GO THAT HARD! AND BTW JUST TWO PEOPLE ISN'T ENOUGH FOR A BOYGROUP?!!
Then, he specifically called out a trainee, Wu Yuheng, to tell him that he's going to support him, because Zhang-Laoshi sent him a hongbao when they were chatting the night before. Wu Yuheng is ZZH's junior from the same company!
HE'S PROBABLY WONDERING WHY THE GUEST MENTOR IS ESPECIALLY FAVOURING HIM LMAO
The rest of the members of his group were like "Thank you, Laoshi" but Wu Yuheng said, "Thank you, Ge" to him instead, so now Wu Yuheng's fans are referring to Gong Jun as "brother in law" asjksgsksg HELP
And now the funniest thing about all of this, and the whole point of this post, is that a lot of people who didn't watch Word of Honor and don't know about Wenzhou, thought that Gong Jun was married after watching Chuang 😂
I kid you not, there were A LOT of people who LEGITIMATELY thought that Gong Jun was married to this elusive, mysterious "Zhang-Laoshi" that he kept on talking about.
This was further exacerbated by the fact that the host, Deng Chao, also refers to his actual wife as Sun-Laoshi! Whenever he mentions Sun-Laoshi, everyone knows he's talking about his wife. So you can probably imagine what happened when Gong Jun also kept bringing up his own mysterious "Zhang-Laoshi" 💀
Him talking about Zhang-Laoshi a lot, plus the stacked rings on his ringfinger, his overall demeanor and choice of words, the hongbao and the special favour for a specific trainee, all led to this one glorious misunderstanding. The stars really aligned for this to happen and I CANNOT STOP LAUGHING 💀💀💀
Some of the comments were just absolute GOLD. Like saying that they felt that Gong Jun was really too much, constantly talking about his lover during the event! 😭 And some were going "well it must be his wife, otherwise he would refer to them with their full name and not just a vague Zhang-Laoshi as if he expects everyone to know exactly who that person is" and also "he really smiles a lot when talking about his lover huh" asjkdgsdhs HELP ME WHAT KIND OF SITUATION IS THIS 💀
This is.....unprecedented. Clownery at its finest. LITERALLY ALL OTHER FANDOMS CAN GO HOME. I'm still laughing at the sheer audacity and absurdity of it all. All of the shameless wedding jokes the fandom and the cast members have been making until now have been absolutely STEAMROLLED into fucking oblivion by none other than Gong Jun himself.
Chen Zihan with her top trending Wenzhou wedding edit? Huang Youming and his wedding jokes? Zhang Zhehan calling them the hottest couple? Well Gong Jun skipped wenzhou's wedding altogether and literally made people believe he was married to ZZH 😂 I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE
I just???? What is this cast even doing?????💀
Can you believe that Gaya Sa Pelikula talked about so many lgbt+ related issues as openly as it did?
Can you believe that it gave a lesson about euphemisms and how it is not shameful saying the word gay out loud? Can you believe it talked about allyship and how it’s not always done right, but that if people are willing to listen to lgbt+ people and are open to learn it is valuable? When was the last time you saw a show saying microaggression? And especially, related to how people assume that passing privilege is a good thing and shame more feminine lgbt+ people. When was the last time you heard that “you don’t look gay” is NOT a compliment as explicitly as gsp did? Can you believe it also talked about how Vlad devalued those little mundane romantic things like prom because as lgbt+ we feel those are still out of reach for us because of the hateful societies we live in? But then immidiately showed us that we can have those experiences as lgbt+ people. Can you believe how they also highlighted that coming out feels like coming home, or all the talk about Boca del Cielo which is a place that doesn’t feel real but in the end it is found, and how the show values finally being able to express yourself as lgbt+ as something to celebrate and dance to? Something freeing and beautiful?
You ever just stop and think about how much the cloud recesses trio changed from their youthful days. They went from the three boys who constantly broke rules for fun to eventually grow up and become the yiling patriarch, the sandu shengshou, the head-shaker. Each more terrifying then the other.
The accomplishments the three of them made are extraordinary and the villainous acts they have done are horrifying. Wei Wuxian who created a whole new brand of cultivation by himself but also murdered thousands of people. Jiang Cheng who built his sect from the ashes it became after the loss of entire family but also tortured and killed many demonic cultivators. Nie Huaisang who avenged his brother, defeating a person who destroyed the lives of many people but also manipulated & deceived the whole world and it is implied that he took advantage of a lot of people to fulfil his goal.
The saddest thing is they all become who they are now from the loss of loved ones. Especially the loss of a sibling which had a HUGE lasting impact on each of them. Jiang Yanli’s death made Wei Wuxian lose his very sanity. Wei Wuxian’s death along with Jiang Yanli’s left Jiang Cheng alone in grief with nothing but anger to cover it up. Nie Mingjue’s death left Huaisang with using his Intelligence in very callous ways for the sake of avenging him.
The unjustified deaths of their siblings changed the very core who they used to be. Wei Wuxian who was bright and hopeful lost his very will to live. Jiang Cheng who once sought for a life next to his siblings now rules an entire sect alone in loneliness. Nie Huaisang who preferred to live in peacefullness gave up that very peace he cherished for revenge.
And to think that they once used to be just some carefree teenage boys who sneaked in alcohol into cloud recesses to get drunk, sneaked in porn to read and tease their classmates on, cheated on tests and ending up getting caught, gossiped and talked about the type of romantic partners they wanted, went hunting for a chicken just because why not. They were just happy and carefree boys who ended up losing too much, too young.
