WIP: On Account of Lost Adventures

A collage header for a story titled 'On Account of Lost Adventures.' The foreground is a dark-skinned woman wearing a bird mask and a yellow dress. She holds a quill in hand and is scribbling into a red book. In the background, multiple vignettes can be seen. Beginning with the left side of the image, the upper corner contains an edited painting of a lady and knight interacting. The lady with a skull head and stained arms looks up to the knight, whose face is covered in shadow. Below them is a monotone illustration of a ship. Both sit next to a painted forest. Standing in front of the forests is a woman facing away from the viewer with a hand on her face as if she's in thought. On the right side is a painting of a man standing similarly, overlooking the ruins of an old building in winter, and a different illustration of a forest than the one in the woman's view.

"A woman takes on the hefty task of setting legends straight by interviewing those used for their inspiration."

Genre - Gaslamp Fantasy Epolistary Fiction

Setting - All across Guinevere, a country in the world of Gen'Fa'Sett.

Goals - Novel Around w/ 40,000< Words

Summary — Those who leave their mark on history are never forgotten. But what about the people who got them there? An overachieving grad student is the only one who seems to care.

She strives to be known under the pen name Ms. Quill by piecing together the origins of Champions, deities who once walked among mortals. While studying her country's history concerning demi-gods, she finds evidence that a local politician once strived to become one himself. The only problem is that his past self is supposed to be dead.

Quill believes the truth can be found beyond the rumors, using faded memories from adventurers' past. Recorded conversations, salvaged diaries, and torn logs all sew themselves into her new tapestry, one that begs questions that can't be all answered.

The Interviewer:

Ms. Quill - Human History Major - She/Her Under the encouragement of her favorite professor, Quill becomes dedicated to researching the origins of those who make up the Minor Arcana, the mythology that the Champions belong to. In her search, a thread ties itself to Guinevere's most powerful politician in its capital. Determined, a bit out of her depth, and ready to sacrifice any social standings for her project, Ms. Quill works hard for her story.

The Interviewees:

Roman Scurrier - Quarterling Activist - She/Her Roman left behind a life of petty crimes to begin anew. Used to being looked down upon, she never made an effort to care about good standings among others. Now, she is fighting against a resolution that will heavily affect the Quarterling population in Guinevere, worsening lives already undervalued by most. Although her self-worth has improved, her base values haven't changed. Even during her days as a roguish criminal, Roman believed in supporting those in need through any means possible.

Corrin Enniaun - Human Retired Paladin - He/Him Currently residing in the offshore Northern Isles of Guinevere, he long left behind adventuring to watch over the new generations of his house name, which is devoted to the creator god Fa'. His sect, in particular, is known for its conservative religious roots. Corrin has done much work to destroy what he considers "compulsions," dreading what would happen if his progress becomes undone. He will not respond to any mention of who he once was, believing his past self to be a disgrace to the god he follows.

Mokosh, Clan Niketas - Orcan Trade Magnate - She/Her Sterling of all seas, the Niketas Trading Company is on the lips of all who require the finest exports from various continents. It wouldn't be there without Mokosh's input. She wants to be proud of who she became. Her clan depends on it. Yet she can't bring herself to. A life that was once hers passes by too fast, strained through stuffy galas and endless meetings. It used to be real, blood-bleeding-from-knuckles real. But tradition has a stronger call than adventures.

Sera of Gen's Glade - Elven Archivist - They/Them After dedicating decades to the craft of magic, Sera begins losing what they were once taught. Among those memories, they cannot recall their life before immigrating to Guinevere. This form of memory loss is expected in elves but is premature for one their age. It frustrates them to no end. They turn to collect the knowledge of others, an interest that guides Sera to come to terms with what they lost. Their archive is open to all curious and willing to connect to the past.

Basilica Arthur Daubney - Human Linchpin - He/Him Arthur originally made headlines as one of Guinevere's youngest to rise to power. As the State/Federal Forum's main head, he has legislative power in spades. His past is shrouded in a heavy fog, and what pieces he does give feel rehearsed. This has created many stories around his reputation, with citizens of every creed forming their own truths about him. He pays no mind to this. Only his best interests are taken to heart, keeping the upper class happy and everyone else suffering under his thumb.

Other Voices:

Professor Blackwell - Ms.Quill's Mentor - He/Him Scholarly voice of reason and editor of Quill's future publication. His footnotes are featured throughout her account.

The Advisor - Arthur's Human Second in Command - She/Her A charming socialite with a fascinating intellect. As if that's what she wants you to believe, so your guard is down.

This description is so gorgeous, oh my goodness. /gen

For that, she blamed her mother, Adelaide Copeland, who was the first to teach her what it truly meant to be haunted. It seemed that while her mother had left Salvation, Mississippi behind—stuffing Sadie and a few scraps of their belongings into their car in the dead of night—Salvation had never truly left her. It echoed through the halls of their new hollow apartment in Georgia, tucked away in her muffled sobs past midnight. If it weren’t for the weeping, Sadie wouldn’t have known her mother to be human and sometimes, she still believed she was nothing but a blanket of flesh with no innards like the sheet of a ghost with nothing underneath.

Writing Update 5/15/2025

Hi hi! For the most part, I've finished the hero side of the worldbuilding. I mostly just have to think of more holidays. Anyways, here are the categories of heroes for anyone interested (keep in mind this is a draft that needs more polish):

Commons - Heroes that represent common hopes and dreams.

Pinnacles - Heroes that represent hopes that are achievable, but need a lot of work to become reality, and depend highly on the direction of the future. This can include heroes that represent concepts like world peace or futuristic technology.

Ambitions - Heroes that represent hopes and dreams that are more personal, such as hopes for one's family, personal goals, and so on.

Unattainables - Heroes that represent human desires or dreams which can not be attained. Some are obvious like those based on things like flying or shape shifting dreams, while others are more abstract and connect to humans attempting to disregard their humanity.

Heads up to everyone in the states! KOSA has been reintroduced along with some absolutely fucked buddies called the SCREEN act and the "interstate obscenity act". these are censorship bans that want to strip the internet of EVERYTHING that is offensive to the most insufferable person you have the misfortune to know. we NEED to be calling our reps so much that the staffers know us and get annoyed when they pick up the phone if we don't want to see the most sanitized version of the internet

If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"

I love how on Tumblr, "media literacy" has become "Um, just because someone writes about this doesn't mean they're endorsing this. I hate all these media puritans ruining everything."

I'm sad to inform you that knowing when and whether an author is endorsing something, implying something, saying something, is also part of media literacy. Knowing when they are doing this and when they're not is part of media literacy. Assuming that no author has ever endorsed a bad thing is how you fall for proper gander. It's not media literacy to always assume that nobody ever has agreed with the morally reprehensible ideas in their work.

Sometimes, authors are endorsing something, and you need to be aware when that happens, and you also need to be aware when you're doing it as an author. All media isn't horny dubcon fanfic where you and the author know it's problematic IRL but you get off to it in the privacy of your brain. Sometimes very smart people can convince you of something that'll hurt others in the real world. Sometimes very dumb people will romanticize something without realizing they're doing it and you'll be caught up in it without realizing that you are.

Being aware of this is also media literacy. Being aware of the narrative tools used to affect your thinking is media literacy. Deciding on your own whether you agree with an author or not is media literacy. Enjoying characters doing bad things and allowing authors to create flawed or cruel characters for the sake of a story is perfectly fine, but it is not the same as being media literate. Being smug about how you never think an author has bad intentions tells me you're edgy, not that you're media literate. You can't use one rule to apply to all media. That's not how media literacy works. Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Aheem heem. Anyway.

I refuse to let this stay in the tags, because it's so fucking good:

#'well I KNOW bad from good so i can't be affected by media!' #'everyone else also knows bad from good and defines it the exact way i do!' #'so if i think this is bad then the author must also think this is bad!' #i have bad news ....

You have perfectly described why I hate these responses when it comes to criticizing romanticized CSA. People will roll their eyes at you as if it's implausible the person writing it might not actually view it as bad. I am genuingely concerned about people who will defend romanticized CSA to their dying breath, all while refusing to acknowledge some groomers and predators write this content because they genuingely view their relationships as cute and harmless. It's usually not even intentional, because these individuals don't even blink an eye at these themes in their work. Not every person who writes this content is a groomer or predator, but that does not mean those who do suddenly poof away like magic. Refusing to ackowledge the writers that are and behaving as if their victims are just "lying puritans", like I see so many folks do, is so childish and harmful.

Like, I really wish people understood breaking away from purity culture is not this magical remedy that makes shitty people suddenly go away. Using the idea that believing the exact opposite of purity culture somehow erases all evil is falling into the same trappings that purity culture does. Like, purity culture refuses to acknowledge predators within their community because, so long as someone has specific beliefs and follows specific rules, they can't be bad. I am concerned seeing people who claim to believe the opposite pushing the same beliefs. Aka "so long as you think fiction never affects reality, you can't be a predator!". It's just purity culture repackaged.

In summary, great post OP. I know this was posted in 2023, but it's still extremely relevant right now.

I know I've reblogged this before, but I want to reblog it again because yeah, this is so real. A trend I've noticed is some people just despise redemptive villains. I'm not talking about people who rightfully criticize badly written redemptive villains. I'm talking about the people who, if you so much as mention the idea of a redemptive villain, will immediatly act as if you've created a major writing error. I imagine this is one of the trends this post is discussing. "It's harder to just let your villains stay evil," It really isn't, actually. At least not from my experience. I say this as someone who has written both. Letting villains remain horrific is very easy, but writing in an arc where said character decides to do better is far harder.

It sucks that sometimes it feels like the only thing I can do to make a character need redemption is say a few mean words, otherwise they'll be seen as "past the point of no return". And don't get me wrong, though redemption stories are also important. I just wish people realized letting horrific characters redeem themselves also makes for great stories, and that there is such an importance for them.

the concept and idea of “you can always start trying to be a better person” is extremely important to me both in media and irl and i continue to be deeply deeply disturbed by the trend on this site pushing that these ideas in media are bad writing or even morally reprehensible

because theyd rather someone stay terrible or just straight up die than become a better person

from a compassionate point of view it’s deeply distressing and from a pragmatic point of view it’s outright frustrating

it’s fucked up.

I adore this. You perfectly took symbolism and imagery associated with the heart that would usually be framed as comforting, and distorted it in a way that gave me chills. This poem felt extremely powerful because of that, and I love the haunting imagery you've created here.

Cracks are in the molding of the drywall

where my fingers push in the heart

I'm tired of holding

The squelch it makes when it hits the ground

notifies me of my failure and makes my voicebox

attempt to imitate that horrifying sound

My knees slip in the flood of red from it's exit

And I fall in time with it's beating

Gorey giggles bubble from my mouth

when I end up landing face to face with it

Realizing that this is karma's dealing
