When Sasha hosts her first D&D session, Michael isn’t invited, really, but it shows up regardless; clutching a character sheet and set of resin dice whose insides swirl around in a way that gives everyone a headache. Jon is ready to kick it out immediately, but Sasha vouches for it, and somehow they begin the game with it in their party.
None of them claim to know the Distortion, but they expected a chaotic character — a wild mage or barbarian, maybe. They don’t expect a lore bard, especially not a human one, and especially not one of such a kindly demeanor. It’s strange, watching Michael switch between voicing its character and describing its actions to Sasha, as though they’re actually playing with two distinct Spiral avatars instead of one.
As the campaign continues, they discover just how many little details it put into its character. He likes colorful tunics and warm scarves. He thinks lilies are pretty. He’s somehow “more of a doormat than Martin”, as Tim puts it. He was an acolyte before becoming an adventurer. Dungeons and Dragons is a game all about constructing elaborate lies wrapped around a grain of truth, after all.
And if Jon Knows something about this character, this strange creation that seems to fit Michael like a second skin, he chooses not to say.
Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters It's just life, so keep dancing through
[dancing through life, wicked]
I wasn’t crazy about this piece so I wasn’t intending on publicly posting it again, but it keeps getting stolen every five minutes so I figured I’d put it here so people at least know who to attribute the original thing to lmao

You’re not depressed. You just need $250,000 in your bank account.
"what would Adam Parrish do?" I ask, during my shift because I am tired and cranky but I need the money. "What would Adam Parrish do?" I ask, when I want to sleep but I have school to work on. "What would Adam Parrish do?" I ask myself daily.
The answer should have been "buckle down and get shit done" but I guess the wires got crossed and now the Adam in my head says human sacrifice looks pretty good actually-
I spent most of The Dream Thieves convincing myself I was misreading the "Ronan is gay" subtext and man it was the most exciting thing I've ever experienced to find out I was right
Not least because, early in the book at Nino's when Kavinsky is insinuating that Ronan is in love with Gansey I had a moment of "oh wouldn't it be interesting if Ronan actually was in love with Gansey? Well actually they don't strike me as romantically compatible." And so I thought to myself "well if Ronan was gay who would it make sense and be characteristic for him to have feelings for?" and before I even finished the thought my brain said "ADAM"
And we never looked back (except for the subsequent 50 chapters because it seemed too good to be true for a minute there)
so embarrassing to get obsessed with your own oc but it doesn't fuel you creatively or motivate you at all you just sort of sit there. like yeah I've been thinking a lot about blorbo from my mind. no images of them exist in the world and they have maybe 3 personality traits so far. I would rather die than attempt to write about them. I've spent the last 48 hours rotating them in my brain though
so is the implication here that michael stays at the institute/in the archives even after gertrude's death? gotta say I am very charmed imagining the bitterest man alive passing up a chance to finally get out because god damn it. these new idiots are just like he was aren't they.
Yes! He’s still stuck at the institute and he just gets better (worse) overtime! I feel like after a few pranks and some shenanigans more directed at Elias, he ends up with a re-negotiated contract.
He’s still tied to the Institute but he’s no longer tied to Gertrude. His role is changed to “Assistant to the Archives.” At the time, Michael is all for it, he doesn’t want to be ordered around by Gertrude. But when Gertrude passes and he realizes he’s still STUCK there, he regrets that his past self was manipulated like that.
By that point, he’s a lot more Spiral-inclined, and he becomes a friendly but difficult coworker for the new archive time. It’s hard to get a straight answer from him both from his nature changing and the fact that he knows Elias is watching him. But he does his best!
