James going for an eye exam/checkup and the optometrist is some new young guy who’s all stone-faced business, barely looking at him, flipping through paper work, “are you having any problems with your current glasses,” etc and James is just stumbling over his words practically drooling at this man and also flirting unashamedly with terribly cheesy lines. Something about “the eyes are the windows to the soul you know? see anything you like in mine?” and reg’s just like “well your vision sucks so they’re pretty shit windows if you ask me” and then he watches James’ pupils dilate cartoonishly in response and is like where did this man come from and why does he clearly have a degradation kink of some sort. And then he does the thing where he makes James look at him while he moves his finger back and forth to test his peripheral vision or whatever but James keeps accidentally following his hand instead of looking straight ahead because he’s getting distracted by all the rings and picturing how they’d feel on him and and Regulus is like “please for the love of god just look at me” and James is like “oh I’ve been” and then he finally averts his attention from his hands but now he’s just staring into his eyes, jaw slack, down bad and regulus is like “okay can you see my finger still. Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter are you listening to me.” and James is just mumbling “oh I’m listening baby I’m all ears” and it’s the longest fucking checkup regulus has ever had to give but he secretly doesn’t actually mind at all

James' and sirius' borderline codependency was cute. Admirable, even. Until it wasn't.

And the saddest part about it all is even with Remus and regulus around James and Sirius will always gravitate towards eachother. James is hurt? Where's Sirius? Sirirus had yet another nightmare? James' name is the first one past his lips. This drives their respective partners mad. Makes them feel like their affection isn't quite enough. What no one understands is for just how long these boys had only eachother to rely on. James was, at the ripe age of 12 holding Sirius while he slept, getting him to eat after Sirius' mother reached her hands across the dining table, down his throat stealing the appetite right from his stomach. Sirius was the one there to rub james' back when, bless their hearts, his parents were quite able to understand the ache in their sons lungs. And it's hard, to come down from that high. When you've found your constant. That one person in the world who with no more than a glance can take the thoughts from your head and sop up the pain in your body with a nod of the head and an "I know" and they love their boyfriends, of course they do. But you can't, no matter how hard you may try, writhe your way between the seems of a bond once made by two scared eleven year old boys. Regulus hated James when he was young, despised him even. Because James took his brother away. James stole Sirius attention the moment he'd walk into the room and now, now regulus hated his own brother for that same reason. Remus knew how much Sirius loved him. But the shame he'd fill with when he had to call James up and ask how to handle his own boyfriend. His whole soul hurt when Remus fought tooth and nail to get that poor boy home from Azkaban and the only request when Remus offered "anything. Anything at all." Was James fleamont potter. Remus even often thought that if Sirius really had to choose between them, when it all boiled down to, Sirius just could not live without james. And Regulus knew that James would throw his whole life away for sirirus. He'd give the very blood from his veins to that man, utterly unbeknownst to the idea that the life he gave sirirus may as well have taken the air from regulus' lungs, because sirirus needed James. Bad, sometimes. But regulus needed him too. And he wasnt always there in that way he so consistently could be for regulus' brother. So when James and sirirus fall to their knees in that helpless, tearful way they always seemed to, Remus and Regulus can only stand awkwardly off to the side, offering eachother a sympathetic glance over a bond they will never know, and a sort of love that they will never feel.

And it's no one's fault. Because sirius couldn't trust anyone quite the way he did james, and James couldn't quite explain what that meant in any frequency the others could understand.

sometime in their school years, harry and draco get into a vicious argument that ends in bloody fists and a month long detention from mcgonagall. harry realizes he's just so incredibly tired from having to fight off voldemort AND uphold his feud with draco so he decides to put an end to it by making amends and striking up a truce (friendship) with draco.

when asking for tips on how to go along with it from his close friends, knowing it will be difficult to get close to draco, they suggest that he go about it in the pureblood manner of "offering friendship," a lengthy ritual that's sure to work on someone as uptight as malfoy.

as per hermione's instructions, harry finds the book on the subject in the hogwarts library and proceeds to start the process on malfoy except the book has been charmed, by a previous reader so that it's not "the magical guide to compliant camaraderie" but rather "to woo a wizard: the beginner's lessons on courting."

instead, draco finds himself as the recipient of an ancient courting method and is just baffled at it all thinking it's a prank but slowly starts opening up to the idea of it while harry is following the instructions with the end goal being draco's friend, not realizing he's given hope to an already hopeless romantic who's been pining after him for way too long.
