My sixth grade teacher made us read A Day No Pigs Would Die. Kid helps a farmer, farmer gives the kid a piglet as thanks. The piglet turns out to be barren so his parents let him keep it as a pet. The book then goes on about all their fun times together as the pig grows up. You know, really sweet. Then a bad harvest happens before winter and the parents end up telling him they have to slaughter the pig for food. I died a little inside.
