The practice started in the late 1990s, when somebody decided to leave a lipstick kiss on the tomb. Since then lipstick kisses and hearts have been joined by a rash of red graffiti containing expressions of love, such as: “Wilde child we remember you”, “Keep looking at the stars” and “Real beauty ends where intellect begins”. Kissing Oscar’s tomb on the Paris tourist circuit has become a cult pastime.

A fine of €9,000 ($12,000) was imposed on anyone caught kissing or damaging the historical monument, but it had no effect. It was hard to catch people in the act, and most culprits were tourists who were long gone before the police could bring them to court. Appeals from Wilde’s grandson Merlin Holland to stop the practice also fell on deaf ears. A plaque asking fans to respect the tomb instead of defacing it went in vain.

Meanwhile, those greasy red lipstick stains seeped into the stone making it harder and harder to clean. Every cleaning eroded a layer of stone rendering it even more porous, so the next cleaning had to go even deeper and wear away the stone even more.

As someone who has cousins and grandparents in Puerto Rico, seeing someone FINALLY take notice of the atrocities and SAY something is tear jerking to me. My Abuela literally built her own house from recycled wood and materials because the wage she earned from 3 different jobs couldn’t cover the rent costs for a Single bedroom apartment. Just because tourists think Puerto Rico is a “thriving island” doesn’t mean that they truly explored Puerto Rico. They only seen America’s Puerto Rico. They take photos of the mountains, not seeing the metal and wood houses hanging from the cliffs. They eat the food of “Puerto Rico”, not seeing the tired mother sweating behind the grill with her children waiting tables, praying for a tip. They dance to the music, not seeing bloody fingers worn from playing, or the tired strain in the musician’s voice. And now the wage is going even further down, making us, once Proud people who built our homes from the ground up, beg for every airplane to come just so we can eat. Spread the word, of this injustice, of this inhumane act, and pray for a change. Because we are.

To celebrate the first of Halloween, I have to share with you my recent discovery: The Living Tombstone’s remix of Spooky Scary Skeletons and Freaks by Timmy Trumpet & Savage have the same BPM.

I have this Chubb cat called Sir George Hides-A-Lot (George or Little Shit for short) and I would NEVER imagine anything like killing a cat on purpose just for superstition. But then again, people can be cruel. I hope that those who read this comic shed a tear or two much like I did, feeling happy at the fact that in the end, there was a good ending to an animal that some people wish would only get bad ones.
