In school we had to read Romeo and Juliet. Now, I’m not sure if you know this, but it has a man and a woman in a relationship. Like, if you want to read that sort of thing, it’s fine with me, but I frankly thing it’s outrageous to indoctrinate our children into thinking that sort of lifestyle is normal. This was a PUBLIC school too. Is that what you want your tax dollars to pay for?

omfg so today I saw a man and a woman holding hands in public, i mean i don’t have anything against heterosexuality but don’t flaunt it in front of me, think of the kids omfg

“I'm always shocked at the number of fantasy genre readers who can suspend disbelief more easily for dragons than bisexuals. Especially considering that almost no bisexuals breathe fire. Like, hardly any. Less than half, certainly.” -Rich Burlew, after a fan complained that the inclusion of a bisexual character in his webcomic violated their suspension of disbelief.

why would a fantasy world with dragons and orcs and liches not have gay marriage, i dont fucking understand these nerds who strive to cling to the shittier aspects of reality in fantasy

Other examples:

-The Aeneid is fanfic of the Iliad and the Odyssey

-Romeo and Juliet is fanfic of Ovid

So, when I was doing my thesis on whether or not fanfiction should be considered a legitimate genre of literature, my advising professor asked me for examples.  I gave him the generic ones, of course - “Pride & Prejudice and Zombies” is a horror fanfic of “Pride & Prejudice”, “50 Shades of Grey” is an erotica fic of “Twilight" - and that seemed to make him understand what fanfiction is, but not how it’s useful.  So I thought about it, and, after about a minute, I said, “Paradise Lost is basically a fanfiction of the Book of Genesis.  And The Divine Comedy is an epic self-insertion fic for Catholic doctrine.  So, basically, you were teaching us fanfiction last semester.”  I had never before seen a grown man’s eyes widen with such fear, incomprehension, disgust, awe, and understanding.

an (actual) friendly reminder

transgender people do not have to:

experience dysphoria

medically transition

exist inside the gender binary

present with their identified gender

have a certain sexuality

go by certain pronouns

uphold certain gender roles

go against certain gender roles

dress a certain way

act a certain way

look a certain way

to be transgender. here are the things transgender people need to do to be transgender:

identify as a gender that isn’t the one they were assigned at birth

and thats it.

(pls dont call me a “tucute”)

Holy Crap “Lost Stars” Just Acknowledged The Existence Of Transgender People In The Star Wars Universe.

Holy crap “Lost Stars” just acknowledged the existence of transgender people in the Star Wars universe. And not only that, but that transition technology and procedures exist and are relatively common knowledge.

I know some people could interpret this as an anti-trans women joke, but it honestly doesn’t read that way to me. This author, Claudia Gray, could have had Dak say something very different, either overly derisive of trans people (we all know how those jokes tend to go) or responding with agreement about how cold it is and not mentioning transition at all. Instead Gray has Dak say “There are easier ways to switch genders you know.” Aka if for some reason Thane wasn’t talking about the cold, it opened up that line of conversation (Perhaps Dak’s reason for saying it within the diegesis of the story). Aka letting any trans readers know that people like them exist in the Star Wars universe in canon, even if no named trans characters have appeared yet (I don’t think they have?).

Idk, this line blew me away and made me really happy. Gray has made people like me a canon part of the Star Wars universe with this line, and not in a way that marginalizes us or treats us as freaks (at least the way I read this line) and that makes me ludicrously pleased.

Amandla Stenberg Opens Up About Her Gender Identity
The 17-year-old, Hunger Games actor Amandla Stenberg has come out as non-binary. Stenberg - who plays Rue in the adventure film franchise – says she feels like she’s not a ‘woman’ all the time, and non-binary is a term that she feels comfortable using to describe herself. (She is using female pronouns).

“The 17-year-old, Hunger Games actor Amandla Stenberg has come out as non-binary.

Stenberg – who plays Rue in the adventure film franchise – says she feels like she’s not a ‘woman’ all the time, and non-binary is a term that she feels comfortable using to describe herself. (She is using female pronouns).

Writing on Tumblr, she said she is organizing a workshop on feminism, specifically how ‘mainstream feminist movements have continuously excluded women who are not white, thin, cisgender, able-bodied and neurotypical’.

Something we are struggling with is understanding the intersection of feminism and gender identity…

We’re both people who don’t feel like “women” all the time – but we claim feminism as our movement.

Basically, we’re trying to understand the duality of being a non-binary person and a feminist. How do you claim a movement for women when you don’t always feel like one?”

Read the full piece here:

#1: THANK YOU AMANDLA FOR YOUR CONSISTENT AWESOMENESS AS AN INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST AND ROLE MODEL FOR YOUTH & EVERYONE ELSE!

#2: YOU DON’T NEED TO BE A WOMEN OR CIS TO BE FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS. Just like white people can and should advocate for racial equality, everyone can and should advocate for gender equality.

I give Amandla a TON of credit for having to not only grow up in public, but grow up as a non-binary POC in a white / sexist / cisnormative society! She is young and figuring herself and society out.  I’m Team Stenberg and am not looking to call her out, I just wanted to make this crucial clarification. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says, We Should All Be Feminists

Honestly people who use “grammar” as a cover for their transphobia and desire to invalidate nonbinary people had better not have any speech habits that don’t conform 100% to that narrow subset of academic English they claim to worship. Drop the slang, no run-on sentences, and I know I did not hear you use a sentence fragment on the phone earlier!

And if they’re opposed to neologisms they’d better be consistent with that, too. What’s the cutoff date for a new word to be old enough to be considered “real”? The word “e-mail", coined in the 80s, is newer than the pronouns “sie” and “hir”, transphobes. Don’t use “selfie” if you’re aginst nounself pronouns, which have been around longer. Xe/xem/xer pronouns are older than the word “podcast”. Oh, and the singular “they” has been in use for hundreds of years, so better avoid saying things like “antibiotics” and “lightbulb”!

tl;dr - your cries of “But grammar!” and “But made-up words!” are woefully transparent. You’re doing a truly terrible job of hiding the fact that you’re a transphobic asshole who prefers making marginalized people horribly uncomfortable and possibly dysphoric to, you know, just respectfully changing one word you use to refer to someone.

@badsjw I don’t understand why you see this as a dichotomy. Why couldn’t you write several well-written and well-developed trans characters? If you can write multiple well-done cisgender characters, it seems to me that you ought to be able to write multiple well-done transgender characters.

cool ideas for characters for your story

trans

very trans

not just binary

not just trans boys

(but trans boys too)

at least 3 trans characters

more than 3 trans characters

all very cool

add more trans

Note: The phrase “the chart” refers to the graph in iamretrograde’s post, titled “Comparisons of Intimate Partner Violence Against Various Categories.”

I did a reverse image search on the chart, followed by searching for the text. This led me to this site http://chart-mining.com/comparison-of-intimate-partner-violence-against-various-categories/, which has the graph followed by a source. They source it as being from http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=IS04C02 . I followed the link, but it didn’t have the image, just a page telling me that I could use the website’s search bar to help find what I was looking for.

I tried searching for some of the keywords used on the image with the site’s search bar and discovered two things:

1. The site has an extreme anti-LGBT+ agenda and is extremely biased.

2. I could not find any mention of the supposed statistics. I did find this article: http://downloads.frc.org/EF/EF08L44.pdf , which says, “ ‘Domestic violence is reported to occur in about 11 percent of lesbian homes,’ the article [this is referencing another study] states. It goes on to claim that this is ,about half the rate of 20 percent reported by heterosexual women.’ However, this comparison fails to note that the highest rates of domestic violence among heterosexuals occur among those who are divorced, separated, cohabiting, or in sexual relationships outside of marriage; married women experience the lowest rates of domestic violence of any household arrangement.” Which, as far as I can tell, is claiming that this is study doesn’t count because heterosexual married women are less likely to experience domestic violence than unmarried heterosexual women who have a male partner. This may be true, I’m not sure, but I fail to see how this proves their point. In addition, these figures are significantly lower in both cases than the figures given on the graph.

I then looked up the article they reference. It’s here: http://www.glma.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Page.viewPage&pageID=691 . The organization publishing it, the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (yes, they will also be biased) has removed the statistic and didn’t cite their sources, so that’s mostly a dead end. I found a few other sources, but all of them have various flaws (convenience sampling, over-specificity, etc.) that make them not useful.

Overall, I could not find anything to back up the statistics in that graph. If we accept the statistics provided by an anti-LGBT+ organization, who have a vested interest in the opposite result, then we have clear evidence that domestic violence occurs at lower rates among two-woman couples than one-man one woman couples. Since two-woman couples would have twice as many opportunities to occur, this would seem to indicate that, from a domestic violence point of view, it is safer for a woman to be in a relationship with another woman than with a man. Furthermore, it is safer overall for everyone than that chart indicates. (This does not mean the given statistics are good! However, they are less bad.)

If someone can find a source to back up the chart, I will absolutely reconsider this; until then, it looks like its claims are false.

I’m fairly certain that Bernie has never tried to kill Hillary. Then again, my Latin teacher said that our only primary source for Cateline’s actions is Cicero’s speeches, which are not exactly going to be the most trustworthy in this scenario.

I believe that most people on this thread are upset at the doctors, not at other people on the thread (apart from the one exchange at the top). I hope that I don’t have to explain why it matters for doctors to believe patients about their symptoms?

Also, this isn’t about doctors giving patients the diagnosis that they “want”. This is about doctors giving patients an accurate diagnosis of what they actually have.

Finally, I know ally-falls-downstairs in real life and I can vouch for their credibility.

In seventh grade, there was this girl in my class that was convinced that I was dating a tenth grader -- not any specific tenth grader, just one of them. One day, she saw me talking to another student (actually a ninth grader, but she didn’t know that).

She then came up to me and said something to the effect of, “Suuuure you aren’t dating a tenth grader. I saw you and him talking in the hallway, obviously you must be dating.”

“That doesn’t even make sense!” I said. “By that logic, you and I are dating, since we’re in the hallway and talking right now. Since we aren’t, there is clearly a flaw in your reasoning.”

Someone in my class overheard this and decided that this meant that she and I were actually dating.

This girl, who at the time was rather homophobic, was extremely bothered by this rumor, and vehemently denied it. This only served to convince our classmates that it was true.

In the end, the rumor stopped spreading because people became convinced I was dating a different person instead.

As a history student, the most ridiculous thing that tumblr social justice warriors ever made up is “cultural appropriation”. If you only had mild historical knowledge of any cultural exchange that took place before colonialism (the ultimate times of evil oppression besides the third Reich) you’d realize that what you consider your culture is probably just a mashup out of thousands ancient cultural aspects from many different cultures. “Culture” itself is an umbrella term for basically anything that might be associated with a certain group of people - and it is both fluid and highly subjective. Your political system has been culturally appropriated from somewhere once, and so has your educational system, your economical system, your religion and your language. If you want to get mad about cultural appropriation, how about you start with those monumental cultural appropriations before complaining about white girls wearing dreads?
