Picture this: At the end of season 5 Castiel is not killed and resurrected as an angel, but instead is wounded and still very human

Low and behold Dean shows up on Lisa's door step, filthy, emotionally destroyed, with an injured human Cas half unconscious in the back of the impla, like 'suprise I'm here, I can't go more than 2 hours without a drink and I brought this guy I absolutely do not have any overt sexual chemistry with, wanna date me?'

Cut to Dean trying desperately to have a heterosexual relationship with Lisa while helping a very pitiful Castiel learn to shave, how to shower and importantly, how to want things

I wounder what he could possibly want

Meanwhile Lisa is trying to help Dean and get him to open up about how he's feeling, what's happened, etc, only to repeated find him at 3AM sat on the porch with Castiel bearing his soul like its the easiest thing in the world

And also being way too into Doctor Sexy

Eventually, she snaps. Dean's a good guy, and she owes him one for saving Ben, but maybe she doesn't owe him a relationship. Well, not in the way he expected

Lisa Braden must now, using her powers of emotional maturity and patients of 25 saints, convince Dean Winchester to confront his deeply repressed sexuality

Chaos ensues

So we all know by now that Dean canonically makes Cas watch cowboy movies with him.

Now consider that because Dean is so out of touch with pop culture and stuff that one day they’re looking for a new movie together and they see Brokeback Mountain and Dean is like “oh yeah didn’t Claire compare our Halloween costumes last year to that movie? Maybe we should watch it”

So they watch it and they both just sort of like stiffen up in their chairs and death stare the tv. And then when the movies over they just sit in silence not looking at each other for like twenty minutes before they both get up to leave at the same time and bump into each other and they do that weird little dancy thing you do when you run into someone and then they each retreat into their rooms and don’t talk or make eye contact for the next three days

Wait wait wait, the three ingredients that Metatron used for the spell that closed heaven and made the angels fall was the bow of a cupid (angels who create a love bond between two people), the heart of a Nephilim (the offspring of a human/angel coupling) and, the grace of an angel? See, one of those things is not quite like the others. I may be connecting the dots a little late but wouldn't it make sense if the last ingredient was the grace of an angel... who is in love with a human? That's why Metatron needed Castiel specifically. That's also why his little jab, "he's in love.... with humanity." was so obviously pointed. How did I not pick up on this?
