Avengers Endgame (2019) dir Joe and Anthony Russo
Joshua is playing this role so FUCKING well. Every time he looks at Gina he’s so in awe of her and slowly falling for her but can’t believe it. Because he has only really liked one girl in his entire life. Since they were literal children, the only girl he’s ever paid attention to was Nini. Now, all of the sudden, he sees Gina. I mean, really sees her. Wants to be around her, misses her, wants to celebrate achievements with her, wants to open up to her. But he can’t bring himself to understand how he could like more than one girl. Or better yet, how he could stop liking the one girl he’s liked his whole life and start falling for another.
Ricky has outright said what the writers are not so subtly throwing at us in regards to Rini’s relationship paralleling Ricky’s parents relationship. Nini being his mother and Ricky being his father. Ricky and Nini have pretty much been together their entire lives. He has been raised by two people who have been together for HIS entire life. Ricky has to slowly comes to terms with the fact that not everything lasts, people move on, they grow apart, they grow. But if he accepts his separation with Nini, he’d have to accept his parents separation. So he wants to be with her but he’s conflicted because part of him exudes his just a bit of his mothers behavior. She’s spending time with another guy - Ricky is spending time with Gina. If he accepts his mother can find a place in her heart for another love, he has accept that his heart has room for another love? That he is ready to move forward. Ricky clearly doesn’t want to accept that. Joshua is playing this so lovestruck but also blindsided by his quick admiration and liking of Gina. IT’S AMAZING TO WATCH.
I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that Ricky never loved Nini and that’s why he didn’t say it back. I’m sure he did and probably still does which is why I do think they will get back together and he’ll finally work up the nerve to say I loveD you. “I love you. I am so sorry I couldn’t say I love you months ago. I don’t know where we would be in our relationship if I had. Maybe I would have still grown out of that love, as you have. And that’s okay. Maybe us realizing that now hurts less than it would have before or maybe this hurts more.” Ricky and Nini will both fall out of love with each other, they’ll stay single for a while and learn that they can remain best friends. They’ve known each other since they were children like cmon, they are BEST FRIENDS.
Ricky and Gina though, wheeeeeeew child. Them are some SOULMATES. People have said it over and over again but to me, it would really wild to not put together the two people who you have SHOWN being friends with each other. The building of the friendship between Ricky and Gina. Something that we didn’t get to see with Nini and Ricky. Much like we didn’t get to see Ricky’s parents relationship, his mom was gone FROM THE PILOT. From the jump, my guy! There’s nothing for me to yearn for when it comes to rini. I don’t know what they had??? I know what Ricky and Gina have and they can slow burn this out and give me so much more and tbh I’m ready.

Mornings were always tough. Forced to adhere to a schedule, being read off plans for the day, and the ever-present fact that his father would rather reside to the confines of his study rather than entertain the idea of breakfast with his son wasn’t exactly up Adrien’s alley. And, he now realized, the seeping feel of anxiety coursing through his veins wasn’t welcomed either. It had been his third time combing through his backpack, and the only item of importance was yet to be found, hands coming up empty every time.
Checking the rearview mirror to notice Gorilla had his eyes still trained on the road, Adrien leaned his head down, close to his backpack and staring down his kwami, who was nestled in a small pile of scattered sticky notes.
“Where are my glasses?” he whispers, hoping not to draw attention.
“No room for cheese,” Plagg responds, shifting in the pile and bringing a small paw to rub at his eye. “Sacrifices had to be made.”
Hand coming up to his face, Adrien bit back a groan. He had decided to skip out on the contacts today, far too annoyed with the dry, burning sensation that resulted when he didn’t apply enough eye drops, and had thought being spotted out with glasses wouldn’t be the end of his career. He had modeled for glasses before – although he would admit that the shoot did not do any favors his way – and had been photographed a few times headed to shows with his frames on. No, certainly there would be little problems resulting if he headed to class in his glasses and saved himself the trouble.
Although, it seemed his troubles were just beginning.

After watching Glaciator 2.0, we ought to revisit Hack-San, Rocketear, and Wishmaker after getting more context from this episode, because I really wanna talk about Adrien and Chat Noir's characterizations as of late. Take a look at the scene from Hack-San as an example:
While there have been instances, such as in Oblivio and Troublemaker, where Adrien occasionally displays Chat Noir's mischief and playfulness, you don't usually see Adrien act out or be petty about anything. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't recall Adrien ever "acting out" like this in his civilian form in previous episodes. For the most part, this is the first time Adrien has shown any kind of emotional outburst (or immaturity, I guess?) in his civilian form. Adrien is usually portrayed as being"perfect" because he has to uphold his father's brand. Most of Adrien's emotional range is expressed through Chat Noir because Chat Noir is Adrien's emotional outlet.
We don't typically see Adrien act like this unless he's Chat Noir. Because of this, I have always found it a bit challenging to see Adrien and Chat Noir as the same person. At first, I thought that the writers couldn't make up their minds with his characterization, but now, especially after seeing Wishmaker, I think this disconnect between Adrien and Chat Noir was an intentional writing choice.
It's so easy for the audience to see Adrien and Chat Noir as two separate characters because, in a way, they are. That's certainly how Adrien views himself; he's either this teenage heartthrob who's constantly on his best behaviour, or he's the goofy and mischievous Chat Noir. These two personality traits are seemingly at odds with each other, and yet Adrien somehow embodies them both. This contrast was made especially clear in the art room scene in Lies:
"There. This is really you."
"Do you really think?"
"Yes. You're... perfect."
This scene honestly told us so much more about Adrien than I think most of us realize. A lot of people have analyzed this scene and said that Kagami is able to see Adrien for who he really is, but I don't think that's the case at all. Look at his reaction. If Adrien had a strong sense of self in the first place, then this interaction between him and Kagami wouldn't be like this at all. Adrien would be happy, or at the very least flattered, that someone actually understood him and wanted to get to know the real him. Yet, look at Adrien's face; he's not scared or put off, but he's definitely not happy nor relieved. He's unsure. He's confused. He doesn't connect with Kagami because he doesn't understand what Kagami means. Kagami only sees what she thinks is Adrien's true self, but even Adrien has no clue what that even is.
This season, Adrien is starting to push back against his father, as we saw in Mega Leech, and that line between Adrien and Chat Noir is slowly starting to blur. This "perfect" facade that Adrien has to perform all the time is starting to dissipate. His flaws are starting to show as he's being put in situations where he has to assert himself.
Now, before he can do all of that, Adrien is going to have to come to terms with that the fact that Ladybug isn't interested in Chat Noir, and that the idea of them being together is completely off the table.
Some people might look at this and say "well, yeah, it's about time. Adrien needs to learn about boundaries and stop projecting this fantasy onto Ladybug." That's true, yes, but a lot of people forget just how isolated Adrien is and just how desperate he is for some kind of deep emotional connection. Remember this scene in Glaciator?
"Perhaps Ladybug will love me someday. I mean, like I love her. I have to believe. In the meantime, her friendship is the best gift of all."
Most of us overlooked this scene, but this was a crucial piece of characterization for Adrien, not to mention foreshadowing for Glaciator 2.0.
Of course, Adrien values Ladybug's friendship, but he always had this hope that she was going to fall for him eventually. Whenever horrible things went on in his life, he always turned to Laybug to make him feel better. Even after defeating the akuma in Lies, despite being on rocky terms with Kagami, he doesn't seem as bothered by it because Ladybug was still practically living in his head rent-free.
This is a heavy contrast to the way Marinette felt about her breakup with Luka, which left her devasted.
In Adrien's case, he's not just clinging onto this romantic fantasy, he's become dependent on it for his emotional well-being, so much to the point where it clouds his better judgement. Now he's experiencing emotional whiplash after being faced with the fact that his fantasy won't ever become a reality. He can't depend on this fantasy anymore, because now he has to face all of the loneliness and lack of control he has in his life and realize that he's the only one that can change it.
This is the catalyst for Adrien's character development, and it's going to be intense.

Last week was crazy and I didn’t get around to posting, but now I’m back with your weekly rec list. As usual, I’m trying to rec fics that readers are less likely to have read. (I base that off of kudos on AO3. The general rule is fics under 1000 kudos, but usually I try to keep it under 500!) You can find my other rec lists on my blog at #jennarecsml
If you enjoy these, please reblog so more readers can find these awesome fics!
I love the what ifs of taking are characters and changing something–or everything!–of their circumstances. What if Adrien never went to school? What if soulmates were real? What if there weren’t miraculous? There are so many ways things could have gone differently and I love these explorations. Here are some of my favourite alternate universes!
like poles of a magnet by @rosekasa
ladybug spat her blood at chat noir. invincibility was only granted to the ladybug and black cat that worked together. not even the miraculous cure could heal them, otherwise.
(or, five times they didn’t hate each other, and one time it was love).
Multi-chapter. Enemies AU. The enemies dynamic here is AMAZING!! Adrien is so in character even when he’s a “bad guy”, and the backstory of how he ended up working with Hawkmoth is perfect. (Also, how is Gabriel even worse??) I love the way the identities are played with, and especially the repercussions of Chat working for Hawkmoth on what Adrien is allowed to do.
I Love You To Pieces by marichatting
Marinette’s wrist is blank. She knows that one day, she will kiss her soulmate for the first time, and her soulmate tattoo will appear on her wrist, but how is she supposed to wait patiently for that day to come?
She is dying to know whether or not Adrien is her soulmate. Meanwhile, a certain cat has the same burning question about Ladybug.
One-shot. Soulmates AU. This is so freaking sweet, I can’t even. I love when an author takes the rules of the AU and thinks through how they might play out with our characters and their dynamic, and that’s what we have here. Love the interaction between the soulmate kiss and secret identities!
A Series of Meets: Postcards by @damagectrlwrites
When Adrien moves into his first flat, he discovers postcards already in his mail box addressed to someone none of the neighbors seem to know. The postcards come from a young woman traveling the world for a few months named ’M’ and her diligent, once a week cards make Adrien decide to hold on to them in hopes of delivering them to the correct receiver. However, with each postcard he gets, he learns more and more about ’M’ and soon finds himself falling for the postcard’s mysterious writer.
One-shot. No powers/Never met AU. Okay, technically this is a chapter in a collection of AU one-shots, but it deserves individual attention. I loved the mystery of this one, and watching Adrien slowly fall for someone he’s never even met. I don’t want to give away too much with this one, but when I finished reading it the first time I had to go back and give it another read to see how everything connected.
Footsteps by @sariahsue
“I’m not sneaking!” Marinette blurted out as soon as she saw him. She noticed three things instantly. He was blond. He was holding his hands around his eyes like binoculars, and he was in the nicest tuxedo she had ever seen.
(Marinette’s about to get married to her soulmate, a man she’s never met before. Too bad she meets that cute groomsman in the hallway first.)
One-shot. Soulmates AU. This is ridiculously, impossibly sweet. I love how even in a world where they’ve never met and things are clearly very different (marrying someone you’ve never met??), they’re still so very recognizable as themselves. I love this.
A Series of Meets: Reach by @damagectrlwrites
Paris is safe, except from the rivalry of its two superhero guardians: Ladybug and Chat Noir. Since they were teenagers, the two have raced around Paris, trying to out do-good each other.
After Chat Noir saves a bus of people from falling into the Seine before Ladybug can even get there, Adrien is in high spirits. He helps a young woman reach some chips high on a shelf, kicking off a friendly conversation that ends with a coffee date.
It’s a terrible day for Marinette. First she had a hectic day at work, then Chat Noir gets all the praise for saving a bus of people, and then she nearly topples over trying to reach some chips. At the very least, a nice guy helps her and asks her to coffee. Surely, things will get better, right?
One-shot. Enemies/Never met AU. Okay, technically this is a chapter in a collection of AU one-shots, but it deserves individual attention. This one is absolutely amazing and hilarious and YOU NEED TO READ IT!! Ladybug and Chat Noir are superhero rivals, always trying to outdo each other, and being annoyed at the other. Marinette and Adrien get a meet-cute and fall in love. The juxtaposition is perfect and ridiculous and THAT IDENTITY REVEAL OMG.
The Soul System by @peppermint-shamrock
A series of fics taking place in the same soulmate AU, where soulmates experience an intense feeling of connection and recognition upon first contact - and only first contact. With no lasting proof beyond memories, things don’t always go smoothly.
Series. Soulmates AU. This one is full of angst and heartbreak, but it’s so good. The worldbuilding is phenomenal. This is one where the author has really thought through the consequences of the alternate world, and then figured out how to inflict those on our canon dynamics in such a way that they inflict maximum hurt. Ladybug and Chat Noir are soulmates, but Marinette’s in love with someone else. Someone who already has a soulmate.
lost without the shape of your heart by @beaubcxton
“I heard you today at the coffee shop.” Ladybug whispered, and noticed the way he stiffened immediately. “Don’t worry, I didn’t figure out who you were but I saw the back of your head as you left.”
“Oh.” He pulled away then, and offered her a wobbling charming smile. “You didn’t happen to hear anything I said, did you?”
Four times Marinette stumbles onto the boy behind the mask, and the one time she meets him.
One-shot. Never met AU. This is such beautiful ladynoir, and I love how that relationship grows and deepens. Meanwhile, of course, they’ve never met as civilians, but there’s nothing stopping them from recognizing each other. The ending absolutely sent me.
The following fics is amazing and absolutely worth reading, but does feature sexual content, so minors beware.
Overheard by @ghostlyhamburger
Marinette and Adrien are roommates. Adrien overhears some odd sounds from Marinette’s room.
Rated E. Multi-chapter. Roommates/Housemates AU. This is really hot and sweet, and then the angst hammer comes in. I just really enjoyed the entire thing, watching these two be idiots and seeing how the misunderstandings arise.
I just don't think I can handle seeing Anne and Gilbert interact. I will literally die but like ok I guess
One of the things I love most about Lockwood is that he is the textbook example of the "one who is scared to love" but instead of being extremely cold and callous all the time like your normal tragic backstory male mc, he can't stop himself from loving.
The thing is, we know he tries. (See THB). He tries to keep everyone at a distance, tries to be cold and calculating, but he can't do it. He wants to be Sherlock Holmes, highly functioning sociopath, but he can't do it.
And it shows up in the smallest ways: how immediately understanding he is of Lucy when she doesn't want to explain what happened at Jacobs' even though he is interviewing her for a job. How he stood up for the bratty nightwatch kid when Ned was bullying him, simply because he didn't like watching someone smaller get picked on. Or when he mercifully changed the bet with Kipps, because at the end of the day it was a petty bet to begin with, and they had just been through so much together, and honestly it didn't matter anymore. There was no reason to humilate anyone. How he will always protect another agent, even if they are Fittes. Heck, he even stands up for the Fittes' agents, saying "they're just kids like us." It's the adults he has beef with.
Lucy mentions that any news of a death by ghost-touch weighs on Lockwood. He is incredibly patient with Danny Skinner and perturbed that a kid this young is in his living room alone.
All three of them think of Lucy as the one with the bleeding heart. She's a Listener, a feeler, the one who is most affected by the past suffering of the ghosts. But that's for the dead.
Lockwood is a bleeding heart for the living. He tries not to be. He hates it. Because caring means risking hurt. Caring means you can lose what you care about. But for as hard as he tries to pretend he doesn't, for as good as he is at acting like nothing can phase him, it does.
Lockwood is scared of loving. But he can't stop.
that time chat was ready to die for ladybug and ladybug was ready to kill for chat
