Alberu: Dongsaeng, this is an intervention.

Deruth: we think something might be wrong with your taste buds.

Cale: huh? It’s not even that spicy? Try it if you don’t believe me?

Everyone in the room: *tries it and immediately starts dying(-Choi Han)*

Deruth: Dear God! That could kill a small cat!

Ohn: as a small cat, I can confirm, eating any more of that would kill me.

Cale: Oh come on! It isn’t that spicy!

Everyone:*confusion*

Choi Han:…

Choi Han:… it isn’t that bad…

Everyone:*appalled*

Alberu: You two are fucking anomalies. This is not something a human, or any race for that matter, can consume without horrible difficulty.

Cale:*walks over to the dish*

Cale:*eats the rest of it to not let it go to waste because it really does have the perfect amount of spice*

Everyone:*in utter terror as Cale shows zero reaction*

Alberu: I am terrified of you.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

I finally found it! A book with a portrayal of fae that I liked almost as much as Holly Black’s!

Of course, that’s because Heather Fawcett’s depiction of fae is strikingly redolent of Holly’s. I could even dub them to be in the same universe and they would fit somehow. It is clear by now I only like a specific kind of fae (this is my personal preference)—the fairytale-esque / folklore version. I hate Gild or ACoTAR’s portrayal of fae; I do not see fae EVER as... macho men. The mere thought makes me gag. I will take Cardan’s goat tail over big, manly ‘alpha’ men that are also so-called 'fae', tyvm.

Sorry, I digress. But not entirely, because well, this book I’m reviewing, if the title isn’t obvious enough, is about fae. The way fae is categorised goes like this (I’m writing this down so that when the next book arrives next year, I still fucking remember):

Human-sized / big fae are called The Tall Ones or Courtly Fae. Tiny ones are called the Common Fae, further sub-categorised into Brownies (they strike bargains with mortals often) or Trooping Fae (they travel in troops and keep to themselves). 

One of my standout (if not my favourite) characters is Poe, who is a Brownie. OMG, he is so adorable with his sharp needle-fingers and his love for cooking. Also, that little thing makes fucking delicious bread, which is my absolute favourite thing to eat in the world. My heart broke for him when his tree got burnt, but yay that Wendell Bambleby fixed it for him!!! 

How is Poe not adorable? I heard from the reviews (LUCKY ASSES WHO GOT ARCS) that the next book will feature him again (and his lady), and I am so excited to read it.

Moving on from Poe, I’ll address a character much more important to the story: Wendell. I have to say that because everyone was saying the romance subplot is very small, I took it to mean that I would not see Wendell much, but I was wrong. Wendell is in the story most of the time. And while I can’t say I’m in love with him (the romance was too sudden IMO), I do love him very much. He’s hilarious. An absolute riot. I mean, just look at this part in his POV (do be mindful of spoilers in this snippet):

This man is clinically insane, lmao.

Random side-note: him having blonde hair is delicious. I just love blonde male characters. He is, quite literally, a ray of sunshine compared to Emily’s grumpiness. I usually absolutely despise the grumpy/sunshine trope because the man is almost always the fucking grump. But when it’s reversed? Utterly delightful. How can I not love a male character who is actually emotionally intelligent? Who on earth wrote into the romance fiction codex that an attractive male lead must have the emotional intelligence of a toothpick (Coughs at Love Hypothesis, coughs at Love on the Brain, cough cough cough)? Who???

Anyways.

This book surprised me in many ways, not just with Wendell. It’s dubbed as ‘cosy fantasy’ and many people complain that nothing really happens, so I was kind of bracing myself for a snoozefest.

Um, I was wrong.

I'm confused that this is what we consider cosy fantasy (I truthfully know next to nothing of this genre)? But… There is so much adventure and action that happens here. If anything, the stakes in this story feel higher / more engaging than in An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, which I strongly disliked (even though I enjoyed some of its portrayal of fae). While the beginning was a bit rough, I was utterly hooked about a third into Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia. 

I was also A FOOL, because I read this thinking the next book was already out. T_T But no, it only comes out NEXT YEAR. Why are all the books I’m desperate for coming out next year? Okay, just two books including this, but whatever. 

One more thing to add before I close this entry: why do some people dislike Emily??? She was reserved, yes, but her kind heart really shone through her actions, especially in comparison to Wendell's indifference. She’s one of the many characters I adored in this book. In fact, I loved almost everyone in the cast; I was prepared to dislike Auds, the village headswoman, but I loved her in the end. It was lovely how the villagers rallied to support Emily later on, and also—I can't forget dear old Shadow!! Bless that baby.

Suffice to say, I will be sitting here, waiting for the next book very, very patiently.

Wonderful Precure really has been 10/10 on the silly faces department

Lyney: *covers Lynette's mouth* --ehm, she means to say that Father asked us to go on vacation! haha;;

Paimon: stalking Fur-- Paimon thought that would be over after everything that happened!

Freminet: well, not exactly stalking...she asked us to make sure Miss Furina didn't get hurt...

Lyney: Exactly, thank you Freminet. that's a much nicer way of putting it.

Lynette: we were also supposed to make sure she didn't know we were following her.

Lyney: ahem, anyway, we're on vacation now since Clorinde and Navia ended up taking over that task...

Paimon: uh, are they in on it too...?

Freminet: no, when he says "taking over," he moreso means they decided to protect her on their own, so there was no longer any need for us to follow...

Lyney: Right, well--

Lynette: also Clorinde would've caught us for sure if we kept stalking her--

Lyney: Guarding. let's call it guarding

Idk if I can properly put into words why I love cocoapowder so much but I’ll try

It’s really all about Chara’s arc in Undertale Red & Yellow and how by being forced to walk around and interact with Frisk and Clover, they slowly develop a friendship with the two by simply just talking and being themself

Chara did not have a very high opinion of themself, and Chara also isn’t really a fan of stopping to smell the roses. They get upset if Frisk walks off the normal path, and they bring themself down whenever they have the chance to. They feel guilty about what they did to Asriel, and completely unempathetic in the geno run

After failing to free monster kind, Chara is submissive to the whims of Frisk’s decisions and simply just encourages progression no matter the route being taken, because they don’t believe they have the right to agency anymore (until the end of the geno run)

And then you add Clover to the mix. Clover who’s experienced a lot of hurt in their past and chooses to spread love and kindness and affection instead. Clover’s sense of justice comes from meeting aggression with friendship and trying to turn people around to reveal the best sides of themselves. Clover does this with Chara, and they don’t initially get along very well. They’re stuck with each other, however, and they bond a little over having shared experiences in the Underground and comparing them to Frisk’s journey

It’s through the True Pacifist route that Chara realizes something: Clover is better than them. They both sacrificed their souls to free all monsters, but one of them actually proved “useful.” Clover believes in a righteous sense of justice that insists on redemption rather than karma, and Clover is willing to give Frisk another chance even after multiple geno runs. Clover also isn’t afraid to snap back against a bad decision, which is why they stop you at the end of every geno

Clover is insufferably different from Chara, and yet over the course of Frisk’s journey they become friends. Not only that, but Clover feels free to openly flirt with Chara and they don’t bat an eye

And Chara starts to believe it when Clover says they deserve to love themself, and that they deserve to forgive themself, and that no matter what mistakes they’ve made in the past, they’re a good person

I have no doubt in my mind that at the end of the True Pacifist route, Clover wishes Chara could come back too, because they definitely believe Chara deserves to live. It’s so interesting to place Clover and Asriel across from each other at the flower bed. They both knew Chara, one in life and one in death, and yet they both knew two different Charas

Asriel talks about how Chara wasn’t the best person and that he idolized them growing up, but he outright expresses that Chara was a bad friend and that Frisk is their perfect counterpart. Clover refutes this and says that Chara is good, and has always had good intentions. Clover never idolized Chara but saw them for who they were, flaws and all, and admired them anyway

Chara and Clover have deep conversations that Chara never could have with Asriel, because Asriel was just a silly kid who didn’t understand the gravity of their plan. Chara hates themself for that plan, because they realized they shouldn’t have put that burden on a child. What Chara doesn’t realize is they were a child too, one with a foolish dream of saving the world through a noble and just sacrifice

And they see Clover, who did the same thing. A child who sacrificed their existence for a greater cause. Clover didn’t deserve that. But Chara respects their decision. Chara is happy when they come back at the end, and their smile speaks volumes

There’s this deeper connection between Chara and Clover that just makes them perfect for each other. Their opposites-attract dynamic met with their shared experiences, admiration for each other, and witty banter they share throughout. I love Cocoapowder 💕

Courage and Katz!!! One of my comfort shows❤️

I have a personal take on their dynamic that I will attempt to explain:

Basically I see their dynamic as Katz doing a con or scheme as he does, where Muriel and Eustace happen to get involved. Katz sees Courage is a dog and has that immediate hate, not just against Courage but all dogs. After Courage’s inevitable win, it only makes him despise dogs more, and thus targeting Muriel and Eustace on purpose simply to torment Courage. But as time goes on and Katz continues to make more and more terrifying and difficult challenges, he sees Courages absolute devotion to save them, despite any mistreatment they may give him, intentionally or other. It baffles him. No dog that he’s ever encountered has shown the slight bit of humanity, let alone compassion. So it becomes something of a game. How far is Courage willing to go? As unbeknownst to Courage he no longer plans to harm Muriel or Eustace, but to simply test Courage’s limits. Then after Muriel and Eustace pass away, Courage no longer has a purpose, at least not in his eyes. He goes to Katz, desperate to halt his existence, as well as fulfill Katz’ one goal. This astounds Katz even more. Even in the dogs most desperate time of need, he continues to put others before himself. It’s simply unbelievable. He can’t believe it, he won’t. He hasn’t spent his whole life hating dogs and getting revenge for what they’ve done to him, to his sister. And now the one dog that shows any potential wants to throw it away. As much as he hates it, he refuses Courage’s offer. He instead offers him a new purpose. Help him run his Motel and other sleazy businesses, though not take part in killing or anything, and in return he has company. He has a reason to exist. That and Katz is able to continue his study of the odd dog. At some point he discovers what exactly courage has done for his sister, risking his life for a cat who did nothing but abuse him the second she saw him and rescue her girlfriend he’d never even seen from her extremely abusive boyfriend and dangerous friends. He owes the dog more than he realized, and he hates it. He hates courage, he hates dogs! He has to. But. He doesn’t. He really truly doesn’t hate courage. And he hates it.
