Lalibela Rock-Cut Churches | Socks Studio

Lalibela is a mountainous area in Ethiopia famous for its a peculiar complex of twelve religious constructions built probably in the 12th or 13th century. These “Monolithic Churches” (Church of the Redeemer, of Saint Mary, of Mount Sinai, of Golgotha, of the House of the Cross, of the House of the Virgins, of Saint Gabriel, of Abba Matta, of Saint Mercurius, of Immanuel, of St. George) have been carved out of red volcanic rock in the Middle-ages probably for the will of King Lalibela. The local sovereign wished to found a a “New Jerusalem” after Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land was forced to stop due to Muslim conquest.

The twelve churches represent an exquisite example of a long-established Ethiopian building tradition and have been hewn out of monolithic rock: much is yet to discover about how the incredible work was executed, how many men it needed and which tools were employed, but it is common opinion, for churches like the Bet Giorgis (St George), that the workers would have started at the top and carved downwards creating the roof and the exterior walls of the church.Then they would have hollowed it out to give shape to the interiors and finally they would have further sculpted the rock to create doors, windows, columns and enriched the interiors with different details. The majestic work of carving was then completed by the construction of an extensive complex of drainage ditches, catacombs, caves and trenches in order to connect all the churches together in a maze-like underground system.

  Martinho era completamente devotado a Nossa Senhora: “Maria é a mulher mais elevada e a pedra preciosa mais nobre no Cristianismo depois de Cristo… Ela é a nobreza, a sabedoria e a santidade personificadas. Nós não poderemos jamais honra-la o bastante. Contudo, a honra e os louvores devem ser dados de tal forma que não ferem a Cristo nem às escrituras.” (Cf. Martinho Lutero,  Sermão na Festa da Visitação em 1537) “Nenhuma mulher é como tu! És mais que Eva ou Sara, sobretudo, pela nobreza, bem-aventurança, sabedoria e santidade!” (Cf. Martinho Lutero, , Sermão na Festa da Visitação em 1537) “Devemos honrar Maria como ele mesma desejou e expressou no Magnificat. Louvou a Deus por suas obras. Como, então, podemos nós a exaltá-la? A honra verdadeira de Maria é a honra de Deus, louvor à graça de Deus. Maria não é nada para si mesma, mas para a causa de Cristo. Maria não deseja com isso que nós a contemplemos, mas, através dela, Deus.” (Cf. Martinho Lutero, Explicação do Magnificat, em 1522) Lutero vai além: dá a Bem-Aventurança Virgem Exaltada a posição de “Mãe Espiritual” para os cristãos. “É a consolação e a bondade superabundante de Deus, o homem pode exultar por tal tesouro: Maria é sua verdadeira mãe, Jesus é seu irmão, Deus é seu Pai.” (Cf. Martinho Lutero, Sermão de Natal de 1522) “Maria é a Mãe de Jesus e a Mãe de todos nós, embora fosse só Cristo quem repousou no colo dela… Se ele é nosso, deveríamos estar na situação dele; lá onde ele está, nós também devemos estar e tudo aquilo que ele tem deveria ser nosso. Portanto, a mãe dele também é nossa mãe.”  (Cf. Martinho Lutero, , Sermão de Natal de 1529.)
