thinkin bout how Dennis has basically been using the D.E.N.N.I.S system on Mac for 15 seasons…

Demonstrate Value:

- hangs out with Mac a lot, especially in the early seasons when their friendship is less antagonistic

- their codependent relationship is really just them demonstrating their value to each other

- one example that I guess kinda works for this is in Gun Fever, when Charlie is robbing the bar and Dennis shoots at him after Mac says to

- monthly dinner dates

Engage Physically:

- I mean… come on

Nurturing Dependence:

- again… their codependent relationship

- Mac constantly needs to check in with Dennis

- Mac quite literally depends on Dennis for all his emotional needs

- in the D.E.N.N.I.S system episode, Mac depends on Dennis for his M.A.C system to work

Neglect Emotionally:

- I can think of a thousand examples for this one, obviously, but I won’t list them all

- Dennis constantly rejects Mac’s platonic and romantic advances

- Dennis isn’t great at showing emotion anyway, so it’s kinda natural that he’s neglecting him in that sense

Inspire Hope:

- constantly making up scenarios for schemes in which he and Mac are life partners and/or romantically involved

- “I’m emotionally involved with Mac”

- continues to be physically and emotionally close to Mac, even when physically and emotionally rejecting Mac’s obvious infatuation with him

Separate Entirely:

- I think he was attempting to do this when he left for North Dakota

- he was clearly trying to separate from the whole gang, but he leaves in the same episode where he’s pretending to be in love with Mac, so… you tell me

In conclusion,

MacDennis neck/shoulders notes

Dennis knows how to calm Mac down. He knows where exactly to caress Mac’s body.

1. Dennis giving Mac a shoulder rub after Mac got really aggressive/excited about selling the the house

2. Dennis reaching out and grabbing Macs shoulder after Mac says he’s going to stay at Charlie’s

3. Dennis putting his right hand on the back of Macs neck and his left hand on his lapel to calm him down AND THEN caressing the back of Macs head with his right hand while saying “stay calm with me okay?”

4. Dennis putting both his hands on Macs face while telling him to calm down

5. Macs dream involves Dennis putting both his hands on Macs neck before kissing him

mac, who wants to get closer. dennis, who keeps moving away. yet dennis only retreats as far away as the chair here.

the way dennis winces after saying "maybe we ARE spending a little bit too much time together". but this is a moment of pain that dennis does not let mac in on. he doesn't want mac to see how much this hurts him to say. he wants to pretend like he's strong when he isn't.

the way dennis' face changes when he says "[i feel like i'm not...] flourishing" & shoots mac this gaze...

i think he's waiting for mac to fight back. to try to "save" their relationship. to prove that dee's wrong. to go "no, that's bullshit dennis, our relationship is so awesome and you know it!". but mac doesn't

look at how hurt dennis is by mac's defeat. he's thinking "really? you give up on me just like that? but i thought..."

"WAIT! ...don't do that"

look at how surprised mac is that dennis DOES try to stop this break-up from happening, that he finally touches him after moving away from him every time mac tried to get close on the couch
