LOTR’s concept artists designed the films as a “journey back in time”

So (according to the concept art book) as the Fellowship travels deeper into Middle Earth, the places they pass through become inspired by progressively older periods of history. The farther along you are in the story, the more ancient the design influences

We begin in The Shire: which feels so familiar because, with its tea-kettles and cozy fireplaces, it’s inspired by the relatively recent era of rural England in the 1800s

But when we leave Hobbiton, we also leave that familiar 1800s-England aesthetic behind and start going farther back in time. 

Bree is based on late 1600s English architecture

Rohan is even farther back, based on old  anglo-saxon era architecture (400s-700s? ce)

Gondor is way back, and no longer the familiar English or Anglo-Saxon: its design comes from classical Greek and Roman architecture

And far far FAR back is Mordor. It’s a land of tents and huts: prehistoric, primitive, primeval. Cavemen times

And the heart of Mordor is a barren lifeless hellscape of volcanic rock…like a relic from the ages when the world was still being formed,  and life didn’t yet exist

And then they finally reach Mount Doom, which one artist described as 

“where the ring was made, which represents, in a sense, the moment of creation itself”

the knowing eye contact women make when men are talking is the purest human connection possible

I guess I'm getting to James first, for he really annoys me. He's a bully, and he did really awful things when he and Reg weren't together. I hope he'll grow up. It doesn't mean I don't think he's a good friend with great potential as an adult. You portray him well. So James, why did you think it was okay to kinda harass Reg with messages about how horny and in love you are ? Do you know not everything is about sex ? And... Can't you JUST ask yourself if you're not responsible for Lily's depart?

You know how people buy drinks for girls in bars? Why can’t people do that in book stores? Like if I’m looking at a novel in Barnes and Noble and some person walks up to me and strikes up a conversation and offers to buy the book for me there is a lot better chance of that working out in their favor

When Roman entered the hottest new coffee shop in town, he didn’t expect to find the key-youtest barista serving drinks.

He was adorable, with dark, dark hair, slightly tinted purple, and sleeves that were pushed up half-way, causing him to look a zillion times more cute than he did in the first place.

The only problem?

Said barista, Virgil, according to his name tag, would not respond to his flirting!
