things that actually do improve your mental health that of course won’t cure you and solve all your problems, but will significantly improve your quality of life:

• drinking enough water

• eating healthier

• getting enough exercise (even just doing a bit of yoga/stretching everyday or going for a walk)

• adopting a more positive mindset (not pretending everything’s fine, just not being overly negative and trying to see the brighter side of things and have hope for the future)

• taking a shower everyday and washing your hair enough, taking care of your skin, doing nice things for yourself every now and then (it doesn’t have to be costly, it could just be something small), and other forms of self care

• meditation (its actually proven to improve your mental health significantly and really helps with things like stress and anxiety)

• being more mindful about the media you consume and how its affecting you (e.g ā€œhey i feel more anxious when im on social media because of this reason, I should decrease how much time i spend doing thatā€)

• practicing self love (although it’s hard, it’s absolutely necessary)

• writing in a diary, it can be a physical diary or just on your phone (really important for people who can’t get therapists or don’t have anyone to talk to)

please stop downplaying the positive impact that small practices like these can have on someone’s life just because they won’t fix everything. small improvements are still improvements. neglecting yourself and your health is terrible for your mind and any steps towards taking better care of yourself are really important

most damaging idea of the 21st century: the conviction of vast numbers of people that human history will end within our lifetimes

climate change represents world-altering tragedy if unchecked, but not even in the worst-case scenario does it mean ā€œliterally everyone diesā€

yet so many people have jumped already to ā€œit’s over, the world is going to end, we can do nothing about itā€ and are just paralyzingly cynical. How do I explain that the power to imagine a future is essential for creating it

On the Collapse of HBO Max and the Importance of Physical Media

https://www.slashfilm.com/612335/best-movies-of-2021/

This article is a great articulation of a problem I have noticed increasingly over the past couple of years.Ā  As more and more movies and shows simply are not released on physical media, I’ve waited for something like the collapse of HBO Max to highlight a huge problem: we are no longer able to own our entertainment.Ā  Streaming is, at its most basic, a rental.Ā  We pay to rent, and that’s if we have a high-quality and stable internet connection.Ā  Those who lack internet are basically shit out of luck for entertainment.

And more than that, when a streaming service suddenly vanishes, or merges with another and does a purge of their shows and movies, those shows and movies simply … vanish.Ā  They no longer exist unless some enterprising individual pirates it.Ā  At that point, the only way to access a piece of art is through illegality.Ā Ā

And this is why I’ve been so angry about theĀ ā€˜phasing out’ of physical media.Ā  If I like a show, let me buy the season.Ā  I’m fine paying more for the boxed set of physical media that I then own, no matter what the platform that originally hosted it does after.Ā  Let me take those shows with me even if I go to a place without internet.Ā  Let me get special features and lovingly crafted DVDs that give me behind-the-scenes peeks whenever I want.Ā  Ditching physical media puts us all at the mercy of giant media conglomerates, begging them to let us watch something we have paid for many times over.Ā  And they can take it away whenever they want.Ā  So buy DVDs or Blu-Ray or whatever you like.Ā  But make sure you shore up your collection of the things you love, and never trust a media company.Ā  They’ll drop you the second they feel like they’ve pumped enough money out of you.

how you program your mind when you’re at a low point is so impactful. resorting back to toxic patterns when you’re low is only strengthening those neural pathways and programming your mind to make those unhealthy choices or think those unhealthy thoughts every time you’re not feeling well. alternatively, trying your hardest to cope in a healthier way every time you’re feeling bad will strengthen those positive neural pathways, and as time goes on, it will become easier to make healthy choices and say no to toxic patterns. this of course isn’t to say that you should feel guilty if you relapse, it is not by any means easy to reprogram your brain and sometimes we relapse and that’s okay, so long as we’re trying our best to treat ourselves better.
