Logically, Shiro has always known that Keith is smaller. He’s slender, lithe, with a compact frame and narrow shoulders, and physically unimposing to anyone who doesn’t know him.

Shiro knows him.

Shiro has always seen the fight in Keith, the defiance and aggression that intimidates men older and bigger. He’s seen Keith’s determination and will, the way he doesn’t back down. He’s seen a man who might be a head shorter than everyone around him, but stands taller. He sees someone he considers his equal, and Shiro rarely notices how much bigger he is than Keith.

But now, with his slight frame curled protectively against Shiro’s chest, skin chalky and his own chest barely rising with each hard-won breath, Shiro is vividly reminded of Keith’s smaller size. He feels fragile, like Shiro could crush him, and nothing has felt more wrong in his life.

His muscles tighten, tension running between his shoulder blades and up his neck as he carries Keith’s limp form to the med bay. He aches to pull Keith closer, to draw him into his own body and imbue him with strength and health. Feeling helpless isn’t something he’s ever coped with well, so he’s always focused on thinking through a situation logically.

Matt put down his phone and continued ranting, this time about just everything in general, and Shiro rolled his eyes and pulled a Pepsi out of his backpack. He’d need a lot of caffeine to listen to this. As he chugged it, he could see a head of silky black hair out of the corner of his eye, and Shiro promptly choked on his soda. Matt turned to stare at him, his amber eyes blinking rapidly. “Shiro? What the hell-?”

Then Matt saw Keith and snorted. “Oooh, gayness strikes again. Don’t suffocate.”

“Shut up,” Shiro shot back between coughs.

Once Shiro could speak (he could still feel something lodged in his throat, but he could breathe) he looked up to see Matt barely suppressing laughter and a very concerned looking Keith staring at him.

Keith had his dark, silky hair pulled back into a higher ponytail than usual, and his bangs were just barely neat enough for Keith to see. His dusky eyes were wide with confusion, and his lean hands were shoved into his skinny jean pockets. Did Shiro say skinny jeans? He meant skin tight black jeans paired with ankle-high combat boots and a NASA tee shirt. It was so casual, but Keith rocked the look, and Shiro could feel his face burning.

Something I noticed on my season 7 rewatch is how supportive James is of his fellow classmates. I know a lot of fans shit on him because he didn't get along with Keith but let's face it, none of Keith's peers liked him it wasn't just James. But when the students are trying out the simulator James is shown cheering them on and looking just as let down as them when they fail. He might be strict but he's one of those friends that will cheer you on and I found that adorable.

I know right. Look at this boy.

James is a good boy. A good person. Yes, he may be a stickler for the rules but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s an asshole. He was friends with his fellow students, excluding Keith of course, but something tells me that Keith wasn’t a very popular student. But with everyone else, he was encouraging and kind.

Let’s not forget that James doesn’t always put rules first. He did help sneak Keith and Hunk out so that Hunk could find his family. He didn’t care about getting in trouble.

If there’s anything I hate, it’s people who put rules over kindness. People who’d rather just play safe and secure their own well-being instead of bending the rules a bit to help others. 

James didn’t do that. He bent the rules. He helped Keith and Hunk. So even though his profile says that he does follow the rules, he isn’t an asshole. His profile even said that he’s a dependable friend, which he has proven multiple times to be. 

I’ve said it many times and I’ll continue to say it until the end of time.
