FOR ANYONE DESIGNING A CHARACTER

So I was making an OC reference sheet and I had my character’s height and body shape in mind but then the concept of weight came into consideration and I wasn’t sure how much she would weigh so I found this big handy chart!

FOR ANYONE DESIGNING A CHARACTER

It’s a photographic chart full of clickable photographs of different people with different heights and weights (up to 6′8″ and 380 lb.) and it was really helpful for me. Maybe you have your character’s exact body shape in mind but aren’t sure what their height or weight should be. Maybe you have either their height or their weight but aren’t sure which other would fit what you already have.

If your character is an adult (I’m not sure how accurate this would be for children) I believe this would be very helpful for anyone who just so happens to be designing that character’s physical attributes!

In the future, I may make a post about the newer runes, however, since runes are so hard, it’s very hard to find information on them that is accurate. I made this post by cross referensing blogs and scholar papers, so not everything here may be correct, but i’m pretty sure most of it is accurate as possible. I also know it’s hard to read the runes, so if anyone needs to see them clearly, just inbox me and I’ll make flashcards and post them for you guys.

As always, ily (/p) and i hope you are having a good day. dont forget to drink water and eat a snack if you can!

#231: Is It Really That Bad?

#231: Is It Really That Bad?

Resistance, as Steven Pressfield describes it, is the bane of my existence. For some reason, my brain keeps looking for ways to distract itself from the task at hand. This happens even when I know what’s the most important task to finish. Sometimes, it happens even when I know that there’s no avoiding it. That I will have to do said task sooner or later.

As it turns out, many writers struggle with the same thing. It’s a weird, irrational phenomenon that probably has something to do with the fact that our stone-age ancestors spent a lot less time contemplating the human condition and focused on getting something to eat.

A thousand years spans about 30 generations on average. If you do the math, you’re only about 150 people away from your stone-age grandparents that lived on the savannah in 3000 B.C.

Although the symptom is the same, many different things can trigger resistance. The most common include self-doubt, fear, ego, laziness, indecisiveness.

Instead of getting to work, your brain comes up with an elaborate theory to justify why it’s not the right time yet. Recently, I’ve been avoiding this one task. I didn’t know how long it would take. In my mind, potentially weeks of work. And because of that, I always justified postponing it again and again for years.

Over time, the thing grew into almost mythical proportions. I developed this narrative in my mind that it would be too difficult and time-consuming.

This Friday, I had a bit of time in the evening. I finally decided to get this thing started. Two hours later, I finished it. I couldn’t believe it. The whole thing was done.

I’d spent hours agonising about the task over the past year — all of them a complete waste of time. If I got over the initial resistance and sorted it out right away, I could’ve saved myself a lot of time and anxiety.

Sometimes, the narratives we create about ourselves and about what we want to achieve are the problem. When you start working on the thing, you might find that it’s nowhere near as bad as you thought it would be.

Particularly when it comes to writing stories, there’s no downside to starting before you feel ready. Dive right in! Worst case, you’ll have to start over. You can always fix things later.

tricky words I always see misspelled in fics: a guide

Viscous/vicious – Viscous is generally used to describe the consistency of blood or other thick liquids. Vicious is used to describe something or someone who is violent.

Piqued/Peaked/Peeked – To pique someone’s interest is to catch or tease their attention. When something peaks, it reaches its total height or intensity. To peek (at) something is to look briefly, or glance.

Discrete/Discreet – this is a tough one. Discrete means to be separate, or distinct, i.e., two discrete theories. Conversely, when someone is discreet, they are being secretive or cautious to avoid attention.

Segue/Segway – one is a transition between things, the other is a thing you can ride at the park and definitely fall off of.

Conscious/Conscience/Conscientious – to be conscious is to be awake, i.e., not unconscious, or to be aware of something. Your conscience is the little voice in your head telling you not to eat the entire pint of ice cream. Finally, to be conscientious is to be good, to do things thoroughly, to be ruled by an inner moral code.

Hope this helped! Please add more if you think of them!

Did you know? You can buy wild rice direct from Native folks!

Wild rice isn’t actually rice-it’s a grass seed that grows naturally in lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and it’s been an indigenous staple food for many, many centuries. Although some corporations have taken and grown “wild rice” in paddies, it is not the same thing- it is actually a hybrid seed that is not the same quality and often sold for a higher price anyways.

image

Not only is the wild rice a sacred food, but is a form of Indigenous science that lets you know how healthy the water is (or isn’t), because water is life and affects the health of all people, plants, and animals that live with it. This has been belatedly acknowledged by very recent research from the University of Minnesota that the health of the wild rice can predict all health of lakes and streams.

I buy my wild rice from the Red Lake Nation and the White Earth Nation.

The cool thing about buying from the White Earth Nation is that they also have videos showing the traditional processes involved in harvesting and parching the rice, and they offer stuff like gift baskets, chokecherry preserves, maple candy, soup & pancake mix, and cookbooks which make great gifts!

image

What I like about buying from the Red Lake Nation is there is a massive variety and quantity of different wild rice products at many different prices! They are aware that the broken grains are not as quality, but it doesn’t go to waste-you can buy the broken grains for “Soup Bits” ($3.49) which are an inexpensive way to add flavor & nutrition to soups and stews. They also offer “Quick Cook” wild rice ($5.69), which is prepared from a lighter roast/parch process that allows the grains to cook in a shorter amount of time and has a rich, traditional flavor.

You can also buy syrups and jellies made from hand harvested hawthorn, chokecherry, and highbush cranberry there.

BUT! If you’re worried about shipping costs or like me, are disabled/have limited mobility and can’t always get to the store like you might prefer,Red Lake Nation also sells their rice through Amazon, eligible for Prime shipping. This is also good for those, Native or not, who are struggling in the community and share their wishlists for help purchasing food.(Also please know this post is only meant to share information, not to make anyone feel bad or imply they’re eating “inferior” food.)

If you’re interested in finding out what other nations cultivate and sell/trade wild rice, there’s a partial list here of where you can buy hand-harvested wild rice from native people in the Great Lakes region

yesterday i reblogged a drawing resource that included how to draw hijabs - and it honestly wasn’t the best advice i’ve seen out there

now, i’m not an artist. but what i saw was a video that included hijab styles most of us don’t really wear and incorrect terminology surrounding niqabs and burqas (yes, there is a difference between the two)

so, i went searching and found a tutorial that i felt was better! these drawing guides and examples come from @/winchestermeg on twitter, and i think they’re really great 💕

When Brazilian graphic designer Carol Rossetti began posting colorful illustrations of women and their stories to Facebook, she had no idea how popular they would become.

Thousands of shares throughout the world later, the appeal of Rosetti’s work is clear. Much like the street art phenomenon Stop Telling Women To Smile, Rossetti’s empowering images are the kind you want to post on every street corner, as both a reminder and affirmation of women’s bodily autonomy.

“It has always bothered me, the world’s attempts to control women’s bodies, behavior and identities,” Rossetti told Mic via email. “It’s a kind of oppression so deeply entangled in our culture that most people don’t even see it’s there, and how cruel it can be.”

Rossetti’s illustrations touch upon an impressive range of intersectional topics, including LGBTQ identity, body image, ageism, racism, sexism and ableism. Some characters are based on the experiences of friends or her own life, while others draw inspiration from the stories many women have shared across the Internet.

“I see those situations I portray every day,” she wrote. “I lived some of them myself.”

Despite quickly garnering thousands of enthusiastic comments and shares on Facebook, the project started as something personal — so personal, in fact, that Rossetti is still figuring out what to call it. For now, the images reside in albums simply titled “WOMEN in english!“ or ”Mujeres en español!“ which is fitting: Rossetti’s illustrations encompass a vast set of experiences that together create a powerful picture of both women’s identity and oppression.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the way it has struck such a global chord. Rossetti originally wrote the text of the illustrations in Portuguese, and then worked with an Australian woman to translate them to English. A group of Israeli feminists also took it upon themselves to create versions of the illustrations in Hebrew. Now, more people have reached out to Rossetti through Facebook and offered to translate her work into even more languages. Next on the docket? Spanish, Russian, German and Lithuanian.

It’s an inspiring show of global solidarity, but the message of Rossetti’s art is clear in any language. Above all, her images celebrate being true to oneself, respecting others and questioning what society tells us is acceptable or beautiful.

“I can’t change the world by myself,” Rossetti said. “But I’d love to know that my work made people review their privileges and be more open to understanding and respecting one another.””
