“The sky calls to us. If we do not destroy ourselves, we will one day venture to the stars.” -CS

Reading Stephen Hawking’s opinion piece in The Guardian today made me think again of Sagan...  Specifically, the Pale, Blue Dot and his last interview with Charlie Rose...  if you’re familiar with either then it will be no surprise why I had to choose a Carl Sagan quote as the title of this post...

There’s a lot to unpack in Stephen Hawking’s opinion piece in The Guardian today...  his words tie together so many themes that you will find in my online collections and things I share...

“This is the most dangerous time for our planet”

“The Sky Calls To Us. If We Do Not Destroy Ourselves, We Will One Day Venture To The Stars.” -CS

Sounds pretty dire, huh?  But at the end of the day I agree that there’s hope...

One Last Thought (via my page on space/perspective)

“I really believe that if the political leaders of the world could see their planet from a distance of 100,000 miles their outlook could be fundamentally changed. That all-important border would be invisible, that noisy argument silenced. The tiny globe would continue to turn, serenely ignoring its subdivisions, presenting a unified facade that would cry out for unified understanding, for homogeneous treatment. The earth must become as it appears: blue and white, not capitalist or Communist; blue and white, not rich or poor; blue and white, not envious or envied.” — Michael Collins, Gemini 10 & Apollo 11 astronaut

“The Sky Calls To Us. If We Do Not Destroy Ourselves, We Will One Day Venture To The Stars.” -CS

ps

Who is CS?  Carl Sagan of course...  I recently posted about him because it was Cal Sagan day a few weeks ago...  funny enough, he also came up today in a discussion at work in reference to the recent post about his course notes, course materials, and more being available in an online Library of Congress collection...  check out the links for more information and food for thought...

It's No Paris, Or Breakfast At The Amazing Hotel In Amman, But It's Still Pretty Tasty! . . . Was Supposed

It's no Paris, or breakfast at the amazing hotel in Amman, but it's still pretty tasty! . . . Was supposed to be en route to Paris but the MLW (UNESCO) conference I was going to present at with members of the IDEL initiative was postponed. I was really looking forward to sharing our work and making connections. Plus getting a chance to revisit and have fun while I'm in town. And be a tourist with friends.... . . . We'll be presenting soon at the AJCU conference in June, and then meeting with Georgetwon right after 😁 . . . #warmbuttercroissant #darkchocolate #honey #fresh #raspberries #oranges #roastedwalnuts #roastedalmonds #extrasharpcheddarcheese #decafecoffee #epictripthesequelonhold #relaxingweekend #travelplans https://www.instagram.com/p/B9J-lFmlwjV/?igshid=b0lteutel5cq

Writing as Woman’s Work
Dr. Danielle Lee is a blogger for Scientific American and a zoologist at the University of Oklahoma who studies animals like the prairie vole and the giant pouched rat. Early in October, she received an invitation from “Ofek,” the pseudonymous blog editor at Biology-Online.org: “I encountered your blog ‘Urban Scientist’ and am wondering if you would be interested in joining us as a guest blogger…. You could serve as ‘educator’ and guide for your world of science.” Lee was interested: “Please tell me more about this…. What are your payment rates for guest bloggers?” Ofek informed her that “we don’t pay” but suggested that writing for his site might “have a direct effect on the traffic and rank of your blog, and that in turn has a direct effect on advertising revenue.” “Thank you very much,” replied Lee. “But I will have to decline your offer. Have a great day.” To which Ofek responded: “Because we don’t pay for blog entries? Are you an urban scientist or an urban whore?” This much raises eyebrows, but there is more. Lee used her blog to decry the insult in a video posting.
