There idiots I love them

Thinking about the time the entire batfamily accidentally came across the same body

The image depicts the bat-family on the roof of a fancy building. There's a dead cop laying on the ground and the family is in a circle around him. From left to right we have Damin as Robin, Barbara as Batgirl, Jason as Red Hood, Bruce as Batman, Dick as Nightwing, Tim as Red Robin, and Steph as Spoiler. They are all looking down like they're not sure that to do. Tim have his hands on his hips. Damian, Barbara, Dick and Steph have their arms crossed on their chest. Jason and Bruce are just standing there.

Just them sharing one brain cell <3

Again, in this image everyone is wearing their hero costumes. From left to right, Tim, Steph, Damian (who is looking down at the body), Barbara (who is looking at Tim), Dick and Jason.
Tim has a slightly frown and is saying "Maybe this was a trap for one of us..."
Barbara says: "But the trap wouldn't work for all of us?"
Dick says: "I caught the Riddler doing something like that once."
Jason says: "So did I!"
There's another text bubble, but this is from Batman, who is off panel: "Or maybe we have to allow for the genuine possibility of..."
Again, they are all in costume.
Batman jumped in the middle of the group and it's now crouching down.
Damian threw his hands up in exasperation, he says "Oh, it's a test!"
Steph changed into an attack position as a reflex for being surprised by Batman's sudden appearance. "No, it's a murder!" she says.
Barbara looks unsurprised and have her arms crossed on her chest. She says "Wait, is this, like, an intervention?"
"For who?" Steph asks.
"Could be for any of us, really" Tim says, one hand on his hips and the other gesticulating broadly.
"Why would we need an intervention?" Jason asks, he has a gun on his hands and it's also in attack position, much like Steph he was surprised by Batman's sudden appearance.
This time the angle is changed. We see everyone in the bat-family leaning to see the body. Batman is closer, crouching down to inspect the crime scene, on his right is Damian and on his left is Steph. Behind them, standing up, is Jason, Barbara, Dick and Tim.
Dick: And no one has tried to kill us yet.
Bruce: Cause of death?
Dick: Wait, is this a test?
Barbara: We're all thinking it.
Dick: Did you set this up?
Tim: Like a "who gets to be Batman" when you're done?
Steph, almost whispering: I don't want to be Batman.
The panel changes, and this time we see Bruce turning his head to give Dick a stern look.
Dick: Okay, okay. For a second it felt like a test.
Bruce: It is.
Dick: I mean, from you. Not God.
Bruce: Robin, start the cursory investigation.
The panel changes again. This time we have Damian closer to the body, and behind him Barbara, Jason, Tim and Batman are standing up.
Barbara: Careful for traps.
Jason: Careful for Joker triggers.
Tim: I would like to go a whole day without talking or thinking about the Joker.
Damian: Too late.
Bruce: Focus. Who killed Detective Dungeon?
Jason is holding a burner phone on his right hand. Connected to the phone there's a cable that leads to an electronic thing.
Jason is looking at someone off panel. He says: I hacked his crap phone. No Cynthia Markus listed. His last call was to... Hold on... oh, pizza.
The panel changes, Damian is crouched down looking at a crumpled paper, he is scowling. Damian says: Pizza's still on his shirt. Great detective work, Jason. Why doesn't the Commissioner Gordon like this detective? Hold on, this warrant is so weird.
The panel changed again. In the background we can see several tall buildings, all lighten up. Even at night, Gotham doesn't sleep.
In the front we have Tim, Barbara and Jason.
Tim and Barbara are talking.
Barbara is gesticulating with her hands, and she's saying "That's not Killer Croc smell. That's Downtown Gotham smell.
Tim has a hand on his chin, like he's thinking. He says "No, that smell is more fishy with a more mildewy--"
Barbara interrupts him "I don't smell Killer Croc"
Jason is looking up at something off panel, he says in a serious tone "We're being watched"

I think it's a common misconception that domesticating animals is somewhat like enslaving them. It really is more of a symbiotic relationship. No wild animal would have willingly put up with early humans if they didn't get something out of it. Wolves wouldn't have stayed with us and become dogs if they weren't getting food and safety out of it. Many large herbivores that are now domesticated could and would have easily trampled their early human captors or broken their enclosures open if they didn't have a reason to stay. Sometimes individual animals still do if we don't give them what they need.

The animals that have stayed with us for thousands of years have evolved to cooperate with us better. Dogs have additional facial muscles around their eyes that wolves lack in order to mimic human facial expressions. Sheep grow their wool perpetually while their wild counterparts don't because a bigger fleece means they're more likely to be allowed to breed and be kept around. Domestic dairy cows produce much more milk than wild bovine species and domestic hens lay more eggs. Do you know how energy costly producing eggs or milk is for an animal? It's pretty intense! They wouldn't be able to do that if we hadn't given them the food and safety from predators and the elements to.

And we really need to show these animals respect and gratitude for what they give us by taking excellent care of them. They gave up a lot to be with us, often including the means to take care of themselves in the wild. That's a huge reason why I'm not against using animal products, but I hate factory farming. They are still living, breathing creatures with needs and feelings. They deserve a comfortable life and, when the time comes, a humane death.

When a person with ADHD complains of severe anxiety, I recommend that the clinician not immediately accept the patient’s label for her emotional experience. A clinician should say, “Tell me more about your baseless, apprehensive fear,” which is the definition of anxiety. More times than not, a person with ADHD hyperarousal will give a quizzical look and respond, “I never said I was afraid.” If the patient can drop the label long enough to describe what the feeling is like, a clinician will likely hear, “I am always tense; I can’t relax enough to sit and watch a movie or TV program. I always feel like I have to go do something.” The patients are describing the inner experience of hyperactivity when it is not being expressed physically.

At the same time, people with ADHD also have fears that are based on real events in their lives. People with ADHD nervous systems are consistently inconsistent. The person is never sure that her abilities and intellect will show up when they are needed. Not being able to measure up at the job or at school, or in social circles is humiliating. It is understandable that people with ADHD live with persistent fear. These fears are real, so they do not indicate an anxiety disorder.

I like the show version of Chishiya, and here’s why.

I love manga!Chishiya, but he always felt pretty one-dimensional to me. His backstory is one of parental neglect, similar to Arisu. Chishiya basically fails to develop a sense of empathy (unlike Arisu, who just has ye olde Main Character Syndrome). He decides to enter med school because he thinks that a profession where he saves lives might actually help him grow a Give-a-Shitter. Spoiler: it doesn’t.

Manga!Chishiya is an emotional flat line. He doesn’t care about other characters because he can’t. I remember thinking that he had a lot of the same traits as a serial killer. He viewed the world through nothing but intellect, and other people were either nonexistent or pawns to be used to further his own ends. Even the idea that maybe being responsible for the lives of others will help him grow some empathy is a chilling one.

That’s cool. I actually really like those kinds of characters. I also think there are enough characters like that in the story. Characters who you look at and think, “Okay, yes, you are terrible.” The big problem is that it makes his weird self-sacrifice with Usagi absolutely senseless. Like, it came out of nowhere. There wasn’t any sort of satisfying build-up where I felt like, “Okay, yeah, this makes sense.”

His updated backstory adds a dimension that wasn’t present in the manga version. Rather than simply lacking empathy for other people, you can actually see the moment in which he makes the conscious decision to turn it off. He has this light bulb moment where he realizes that the world is a cruel and unfair place. He realizes that allowing himself to feel for other people is only going to hurt him in the end because he’s powerless to change the systems that are actively harming them. It’s better to protect himself and survive.

Chishiya is a selfish character, but the idea that his selfishness stems out of a desire to protect himself from pain gives his character some actual depth that was always missing for me. It also makes the King of Diamonds game a lot more meaningful. Kuzuryu went through the same exact thing, but instead of turning off his feelings, he paralyzed himself with a moral dilemma. Where Chishiya chose to treat all human life as equally worthless, Kuzuryu couldn’t stop looking for some value to assign, whether that was to ease his conscience or to inform a sense of justice he was desperately trying to find.

I really, really like how that dichotomy played out.

I also think it’s interesting that Chishiya feels a lot more psychological in the show. He’s clearly highly intelligent in both the manga and the show, and maybe it’s just Murakami’s performance, but there’s something more sinister to him. He’s clearly developed some sort of friendly relationship with Kuina. He displays an ability to be playful and seems to genuinely be extending an offer of friendship to Arisu (up until he sells him out for one corn chip). Seeing how he can make these connections that feel genuine to the people involved (unlike his manga self who is pretty universally despised) and still be willing to fuck those people over for his own survival makes him feel a lot more menacing to me.

This ability to flawlessly manipulate and betray also means he has a deep understanding of human emotion, which is illogical by nature. In the manga, Chishiya says outright that he isn’t suited for Hearts games, but show!Chishiya feels tailor-made for them.

It’s also interesting that in the manga, he seems to get harsher and more isolated. By contrast, in the show, he feels to me like he softens episode by episode. It really struck me in the Jack of Hearts game when he said something about his partner dying because he was too kind. On the surface, you could take it as a typical judgy Chishiya comment, but there actually appeared to be a glimmer of sadness, or envy, or regret. Or all of the above. Or maybe it’s just Murakami Nijiro’s face that made me think that. Either way, I think it was smart of the showrunners to throw him in that game.

In the end, the King of Diamonds game pushes him to the realization that he really is envious of people who have the ability to be kind. He’s envious of people who can make the selfless choice. And it’s not because he can’t be. It’s because he’s closed himself off to the vulnerability that allows a person to make that kind of decision. You can’t truly save others if you’re always protecting yourself.

So, he saves Usagi to try to become that person. And I don’t feel it was out of character at all.
