Reasons to ship Midge X Lenny from the Marvellous Mrs Maisel

The show is very feminist and relevant, despite being set in a time period that was awash with sexism and misogyny. Lenny is a great example of that, being the first male character to see Midge as more than a housewife or mother, and he never once doubts her skills as a female comedian.

. He is (or at least tries to be) a gentleman, giving up his taxi so Midge gets home safe, pays for her and Benjamin’s table on their date, and gives Midge his coat to wear on a cold night when he bails her out of jail and she loses hers.

. They have an irresistible chemistry between them - witty banter, some lingering looks - but what’s more than that is they’re more alike than they know. They’re both controversial, outspoken comedians who don’t give a hoot in hell about not being allowed to say “obscene” things on stage, but you get the feeling they both feel quite lonely and tired sometimes, which is why I love the scene in the bar so much.

It’s the first time we see Lenny vulnerable, shockingly different from the charming, slick character we’re used to. And the fact that they find each other right when they’re both feeling tired and disheartened and like giving up and they’re able to confide in each other says a lot about their relationship. Watching this scene from an outsider’s viewpoint you’d think these people have been friends for years, but in the show they’ve only known each other just under a year and even then rarely see each other, but they’ve got this connection that’s so intimate and interesting to watch. They’re both clearly attracted to each other but never either a) act on it or b) have actually realised it yet, but there’s some casual flirting that just warms my shipper heart🥰:

1. Lenny: “I heard some cute uptown chick got arrested doing a set, I put two and two together.”

Midge: “Called me cute, huh?”

2. Lenny: “Wait, was I supposed to make a pass at you?” (My personal favourite 🥰)

3. Lenny: “Does he know?”

Midge: “Know what?”

Lenny: “That you’ve been corrupted. Lured to the dark side of the microphone…”

Midge: “One. Date.”

Aagh, their chemistry!😍And those lingering looks and smiles and the way they literally light up around each other you can’t help but get drawn in - also literally everyone on the show thinks they’re slept together or are sleeping together 😅😉 Even while Midge is on her date with Benjamin, we get that delightful scene with Lenny and she absolutely glows, because, in my opinion, they just bring out the best in each other and it really shows on the screen.

little miracle

Just finished watching this, and I can honestly say it’s the best Bollywood movie I’ve watched in the longest time. I wasn’t too impressed by the trailer when I watched it, but Nai Lagda came up on a random playlist I was listening to recently, and I’ve been obsessed with it since. So I decided to give the movie a try today (thanks to @chahat-ke-safar 💗💗💗) and it was completely worth it!

A gorgeously shot movie, sweetly written (the humour in the first half reminded me of Malayalam films), and the performances are pretty great too. I wasn’t expecting much from Bhai’s nepotism launches (especially considering the history *cough* Hero, Loveyaatri *cough cough*), but man, did they turn out to be a pleasant surprise. Pranutan has great screen presence, and I really liked her dialogue delivery in particular. (I dislike the dialogue delivery of almost all Bollywood actresses launched post 2007 and at most, tolerate them in their movies.) Zaheer is a little wooden, but likable, and has a nice chemistry with the children. Oh, the children were another reason I was wary of watching the movie, coz I tend to dislike the precociousness they’re forced to perform; but the children in this movie were all great actors, and adorable to boot (especially that one little girl who takes her pet fish Dingu everywhere!) Another notable factor: movies set in J&K always have that stereotypical conflict angle looming, but this movie thankfully subverts that trope. There are mentions of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus and other conflicts in the area as character-building background details, but not in a gratuitous manner that most showcase in “a Kashmir movie”.

I just cannot believe a wonderful little movie like this; focusing on a simpler life and the joy of little things; with a smart, strong, empowering female lead; and a heartwarming bond based on respect; is so woefully ignored, while toxic, misogynist bullshit like Kabir Singh is going on to make 250 crores. Please rectify that, and watch this if you’re in the mood for something that’s sweet, and simple, and fills you with warm, happy feelz!

Top five underrated characters from the Ramayana?

1. Urmila is by far, in my opinion, one of the most underrated characters in the Ramayana. Everyone talks about the sacrifices made by Rama, Sita and Lakshman and everyone knows about them but Urmila is generally forgotten. She willingly allowed Lakshman to leave her behind so he could serve Rama and Sita and then gave up fourteen years of her life so he could fulfil his duty properly. She is regarded as a forgotten heroine by Tagore because of her immense duty. 

2. Shatrughan. He governed Ayodhya in Rama’s absence in terms of administration whilst Rama and Lakshman were in exile and Bharat was living like a sage. He also slew Lavansura, Raavana’s nephew, and is mostly forgotten in comparison to Rama, Lakshman and Bharat. 

3. Mandodari because she always strove for good and is again for the most part forgotten. She suffered for being Raavana’s wife and yet she still tried to persuade him to return Sita as well as saving Sita from death and rape. She is generally overlooked.

4. I think one of my favourite lesser known events is between Rama and Lakshman where Lakshman claims that as he is the younger brother of Rama he has to serve him which was unfair. It is said this is why he was reborn as Balarama on the Mahabharata so that he could have a chance to be served. I’m not entirely sure how accurate this is but I can certainly imagine it.

5. The birth of Sita is one of the most interesting stories I think. She was found in a field and hence Janak named her Sita but there are different stories about who her birth parents were. The most common is that she is the daughter of Bhumi Devi but other stories suggest that the apsara Menaka was her mother or even that she was the daughter of Raavana and was abandoned because she would cause his death. 

So, I started watching the kids’ show “Just Add Magic” on Amazon Video last night. Something about it is so compelling.

It’s very much a kids’ show.

Three 7th graders acquire a magic cookbook. Shenanigans ensue. (There’s also a kid with a “food bike” until he can get a food truck, and he doesn’t need magic to cook awesome things.)

In the background, there are all sorts of adults having their own problems, a plot with a spell-trapped grandma that’s a metaphor for living with a senile relative, and a guest appearance by Mira Furlan (who played Delenn in Babylon 5 and basically plays Delenn in this show too).

Is anyone else watching this? Or am I the odd adult out?
