Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?
The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.
Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.
Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.
And so we continue! Part Two:

Robin II (1991)
Tim Drake vs. The Joker! I can only assume they created this set of comics to prove that Tim Drake is better than Jason.
AHHH! Finally I get to see some examples of Normal-90s-High-School-Boy (TM) Tim Drake lol! I am so excited to see Tim as this like "TOTALLY NORMAL NERDY RELATABLE BOY" even though that gets stripped away over time. Having read some modern comics, Tim Drake is NOT a normal boy and considering some of the hijinks I've heard about I refuse to believe he was ever a Normal Boy.
As part of his relatability he plays DC's version of D&D. But also he's got a way cooler fit & hair compared to his equally nerdy friends. God your shonen protag vibes are showing, Timmy!
Maybe I am gushing too much but this is such a fun civillian dynamic to have! Why don't I see this in fanfics!! Tim who is being courted by the popular crowd and refusing them. Fuck peer pressure Timmy! I know this is 9th grade. I am sure his high school experience evolves but still... I have ideas now for fics!
He does like coffee!
Hmmm.... don't love that. I heard about this aspect of Tim's character. Gonna keep my eye on this thread.
So I guess people don't realize there are multiple robins huh? Thats fun!
I know stories are happening in between Robin I and Robin II in the Batman & Detective Comics series where Tim is working with Batman. And both Robin I and Robin II are fairly early in Tim's run, but it is interesting that the boy who volunteered, who insisted that Batman take him on is so filled with self doubt. It gives an interesting characterization of Tim. Tim Drake is a boy who doubts himself but can't stomach not trying anyway. Or maybe...Tim Drake is a boy with a gut of steel and a heart full of fear.
Alfred is really holding it down! I love his relationship with Tim. He is Tim's mentor just like Bruce. <3
Ah Tim! You little GENIUS! Bruce is out of town and Tim is afraid the Joker will realize the Batman isn't there to keep things inline. So he makes a hologram of Bruce to scare small time criminals and keep the Myth of Batman going! What a smart cookie! He's truly the Robin with The Plan!
Aw man, the hologram fell apart and Joker realized Tim isn't Jason. What will happen next!!
Politicians such and these old geezers suck a lot. Learning more about the political system and the cops in gotham, Gordon doesn't really strike me as a model cop -- especially considering modern standards. He's very much that 90s cowboy of a cop. Obviously, a victim of the time period. Thats why i maintain the only decent rewrite of Gordon I want is a Gordon who was a former Internal Affaris investigator who witched to officer just so he could become a Commandor who pours most of the budget into Internal Affairs to get rid of corruption in the GDPC and reform the cops!
He and Buffy should meet! I think they'd have a lot to bond over.
Dick where are you! Your little brother needs you! For real though its interesting to me that Joker is around and Batman is out of town and neither Alfred or Tim are like "We should call Dick to help so Robin is facing the Joker alone." Of course i know its to get the Timmy vs Joker show down we want and prove Tim can outsmart the Joker! Like comics are always ready to manufactor that drama. But taking it at face value, how poor is Dick and Bruce's relationship in the beginning of Tim's time as Robin that Tim doesn't think he can rely on Dick despite admiring Dick and Dick helping Alfred convince Bruce to keep Tim as Robin in Batman #442!
Woo! He beats the Joker in the end. It takes a lot out of him but his plan comes together and he wins! So proud of you Boy Wonder!!!
Robin III (1992):
Okay we've skipped some time ahead (note to self go back and figure out when Tim's Dad woke up!) and Timmy is back with the Drake's, shit is going down in gotham with gang wars galore and he's struggling to balance that Superhero-Civilian lifestyle
I get why people write Jack Drake as jealous of how close Tim and Bruce are in fanfics.
The Drakes being neighbors means we get cool shit like this:
Why isn't this in more fanfics!! Thats cocol as hell!
WOOO! King Snake is back in town!!
Also Tim has lied to Bruce in like every comic I've read about him except his intro and Robin II (where he couldn't lie to Bruce because Bruce was out of town lolololol). Tim you king
OOOO! I didn't realize this plot happened! Thats awesome! Again WHERE ARE THE FANFICS!
Fucking Teenages Man! Even when they know the right answer, they don't do it!!
Okay thats enough for this run. I will continue in part 3!! I am excited to get to Robin 4 :D
Why did no one tell me Tim didn’t grow up in the Manor next door to the Waynes and instead moved into it after his father woke up from his coma/paralysis!!!
Did they change this after the reboot or something?
Just devoured The Boy Wonder Comics. So good. I love Damian. I love him so much.
I have modified my Reverse Robin AU because of this fic. The art is gorgeous. How can you read that comic and not adore Damian?!
The art! Gosh the art. And Talia! So wonderful and complex! Even Ra’s is so pitiful in the end. I loved all of it and how it’s all told through a series of stories. Such a fun framing device!
The conversation Damian has with Bruce about how you can’t save people from their choices. It’s such an interesting critique of Bruce’s unfailing optimism that his Rogues can be saved without it really being about that. From the mouths of babies and all that.
No critique! Just gushing. It’s one of the few comic series I’ve walked away from with nothing to be mad about.
On another note the character designs were all immaculate. I loved Tim’s bird costume. And Jason’s white eyes. I love how Dick looks so much like Bruce even though they don’t share a drop of blood. Of course this is all warped via Damian’s perspective via Merle’s perspective. So who knows how they really look? But also who cares! It’s just such a fun way to tell a story!
I had a fun idea for a canon compliant Bruce & Tim ABO fic where Tim is presenting as an omega and he calls Bruce to take him back to the manor during the time Jack made him give up Robin.
Like Jack and Dana are in the other room but Tim wants to be with his pack alpha and that hasn’t been Jack in a long time.
And it’s painful because Jack isn’t the worst dad in the world. He’s been really trying lately, even before he found out about Robin, he’s been giving a real effort. But it doesn’t make up for all the years he was shitty and absent. He’s still got a temper and a tendency to threaten Tim with boarding school. And Bruce is who Tim feels safest with. He’s Batman but he’s also the guy who held him when his mom died and takes care of him after hard patrols. Who asks about his schoolwork and pets his hair when he’s tired during a stake out.
So he’s present as an omega and calls Bruce to take him home and Bruce shows up bc he’ll always do his best to never let one of his kids down again. And Bruce has already called Dick over (omega or beta I’m not sure) and Alfred is preparing the pack nest for Tim’s presentation. And he knocks on the door.
And Jack opens the door with a gun, demanding to know why Bruce is here while his son is in heat.
And Bruce has to tell this man who hates him, who feels emasculated by his very presence, that his presenting omega son didn’t feel safe enough in Jack’s home and called Bruce. And it’s made worse because Tim has his bags packed and he’s standing behind the two of them, swaying from the pain, and waiting for Jack to step aside so he can go be with his dad.
And Jack wants to rant and rave and force Tim back into his pack nest and cover his son in his scent and just get him to stay and be safe in his arms. But Tim is standing there waiting to leave and it is a reckoning. That even if Tim has agreed to let go of Robin to make him happy. Even if Tim says he loves him and calls him dad and pretends to follow his rules, Tim will never view him as a dad.
Maybe Jack will blame the coma. He’ll think it was the start of everything going wrong. Maybe he’ll remember, for just a moment, Timothy crying as they dropped him off at his boarding school — just 7 years old and so scared to be separated from his pack — begging them not to leave, clinging to his shirt asking why he didn’t love him enough to stay. But then his mind will reject it, not ready to face a reality where it was always this broken. And he will blame Bruce. He hates Bruce Wayne and everything this man represents as a threat to his family.
So he’ll move to raise the gun, to threaten Bruce Wayne, the prince of Gotham, off of his front porch, only for Dana to tap him on the shoulder and ask him to let Tim through. Because this isn’t about Jack and Bruce or even Jack and Tim. It’s about Tim. It’s about what his instincts need.
Jack will look at his son, really look at him and not the son he wished Tim was but the son Tim is. And he’ll see his son staring at Bruce with so much unmasked love and trust, a look he hasn’t seen since Tim was toddler in his arms. And he’ll step aside. Because for all his faults, Jack Drake loves his son. And it’s the single most selfless thing he’ll ever do as a parent.
And three weeks later, he’ll be dead.
I know we all live the “Batfam isn’t allowed to go to crime drama watch parties or mystery shows because they crack it in five seconds” trope, but hear me out:
They’re terrible at it, because they’re trained for real life, and real life lacks all the drama. Worse. They can’t interrogate suspects themselves, check the crime scenes, follow their normal protocols.
They’re not invited because they keep complaining about what they would do.
They still excel at escape rooms, but that’s because of the riddler.
I want Damien and Tim to be friends so bad. I want chaotic younger sibling energy team up to make everyone else’s life hell! They both have big gremlin energy and 0 chill and poor understanding of other peoples limits.
Stop being cowards @DC, let Tim and Damien wreak havoc!
If you have fics, pls rec and my life is yours!
Having read a bunch of comics now (though lets be honest, not nearly enough and I'm still working through a lot of the young justice and red robin comics when it comes to Tim content) its really funny how Batman acts like Tim doesn't lies to him. Or that he can somehow tell when Tim is lying.
Tim lies all the time during his run as Robin. He lies to his friends, his parents, Bruce! He loves lying to Bruce! Hell, are we forgetting the fake uncle scheme! And yet in various stories, when Bruce needs one of the Robins to tell him something, he asks for Tim's word because the other's "lie." It doesn't make sense?
And then I got to thinking and I realize, when Bruce says Tim doesn't lie, what he really means is "Tim doesn't break his promises."
Even in the context of the panel above, Bruce isn't trying to extract information. He's trying to get his kids to stay out of the fight.
Tim is loyal to Bruce in a way no other Robin is. Dick and Jason left (Dick to find himself and less said about Jason the easier). Steph and Bruce have a sort-of relationship that never felt really close to me. Damian is a child with a burning desire to prove himself and no real understanding of his own limits. Plus -- for a good chunk of his run and really depending on his writer -- warring priorities. He wants to do right by both of his birthrights.
Tim found Bruce when he was sucidal. Tim found him when he was at his lowest and stayed. Tim found him in the timestream when everyone else thought Bruce was dead. Even now, with a new mantle as Red Robin, Tim has stayed! He’s not in another city. Yes he has his teams. But Tim is in Gotham. Tim works with Bruce. Tim is, first and foremost, an idealist boarding on a romantic with a deep belief in the power/symbolism of Batman & Robin. And that idealism means Tim is loyal to Batman.
So when Bruce says "Tim don't lie to me." What Tim hears is, "Give me your word and promise me." And I think that says a lot about their relationship.
Are there any fanfics where Tim is feeling out of step with his family (maybe going through depression) after finding Bruce and getting mad at Bruce for “abandoning” him (how much is it in Tim’s head and how much is it Bruce’s seesaw parenting) and instead of quietly bowing out and avoiding the family, gets mad and demands Bruce’s attention.
Maybe Bruce casually suggests Tim go to therapy because he’s noticed how angry Tim has been even with everyone. And Tim starts screaming how dare they think he’s broken after all he’s done for them. How he’s saved Bruce’s life and he at least deserves their respect if he can’t have their love.
Extra angst points if all his siblings are there and he points out how all of Bruce’s other kids left him to rot in the time stream, that everyone said he was crazy even though he was right.
Extra extra angst points if he gets a very nasty dig at Damien that he immediately regrets because Tim knows Damien is an insecure child who was desperate to ensure his spot in the family the only way he knew how (and after spending time with the league he knows how fucked up that environment is for a kid) but he’s too angry to stop.
Extra extra extra angst points if he brings up how he kept Bruce from killing himself or someone else after Jason died and it’s the first time Jason hears about it.
I get this might be totally OOC but I think angry cruel Tim crashing out and hurting the people around him and having to make amends while they also try to take care of him would be fun.
I fucked up and didn’t use tumblr right. Whoops. To access my actual content go to the blog in the pinned post. Thanks!
