★ : John in 1965 with Julian
"I had [John] down as a coffee-boy layabout, as I used to call him, and thought he was rather arrogant. But when I got to know him – it's quite tragic really. I had an unhappy childhood, too, so there was a bit of an understanding there, although we never talked about it. I remember Stuart Sutcliffe saying that he once saw John at the top of the stairs at art school, crying on his own. That, to me, was the real John, but on stage, of course, he was arrogant."

I've seen these photos many times, but never like this in a row. John washes his hair in the sink, okay..
‘John fascinated me the most because he exuded rocker,’ says Jürgen [Vollmer]. ‘I was a little disappointed when later I got to know him because he was a softie, but he carried off the rocker image perfectly. At the time, though, I never felt comfortable in his presence.’
Tune In by Mark Lewisohn.
Love that he was uncomfortable, until he was disappointed.
