“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
The voice was so sudden and loud that it made you tip over as you scrambled to get away from the ouija board in the middle of your living room floor. Your head hit the floor hard and you winced, the pain making tears sting your eyes.
“Ow,” you whined, squeezing your eyes shut. You made no attempt to get up and no more words came from anywhere near the ouija board. You must’ve imagined it. You let out a soft sigh. In your desperation for company you’d imagined that the cheap board you’d gotten from a thrift store had actually summoned some sort of presence in your crappy, dank apartment. Now the tears welling in your eyes were less from the pounding ache in your head and more from how pathetic the whole situation was. Who the fuck uses a ouija board to find company anyway?
“Hello? Did you knock yourself out? I asked you a question.”
You huffed softly. Why was the voice still there? You sat up, pressing a hand to the back of your head to try and quell the pain while you sniffed away your tears. There was no point in crying now. You should probably just order take out and get some sleep. Your vision cleared and you went to get up, only to find a man sitting cross-legged across from you. Oh.
“So?” he asked, clearly irritated. “Can you explain why I’m here?”
His mouth was pulled into a frown but otherwise he looked pretty normal. Like any other person you’d see on the street or at the grocery store. Surely this isn’t what ouija boards were supposed to dredge up, right? But he was here and clearly waiting for an answer anyway and you figured you might as well give him one.
“I wanted company,” you blurted out. You cringed at the overly honest answer. Judging by the look on the man’s face he had definitely expected a better excuse.
“Does this look like an 800 number to you?” he asked, gesturing vaguely at the ouija board.
“No,” you said, feeling shame crawl up your chest. It was just your luck that you’d summon a dickhead spirit. The tears came springing back and you could feel your cheeks start to burn from holding them back. Spending Halloween night alone with nothing to do and nowhere to go was bad enough but now you were being scolded for wanting something better to do, which was definitely worse.
“Hey, did you hit your head hard? Why are you crying?” the man asked, his voice suddenly much softer than it had been just a minute ago. You shook your head, hiding your face behind your hands.
“No, I’m fine,” you mumbled. “You can leave, it’s whatever.”
“I’m already here now,” he replied, now only slightly annoyed. You heard shuffling and suddenly there was a cold hand on the back of your head. You uncovered your face and found that the man was kneeling in front of you, his frown less intense and his eyes fixed on yours. “Did you hit your head hard?”
“Yeah,” you said, voice still unsteady. He grunted, letting go of your head and taking a hold of your face instead, wiping away your tears roughly and with little care.
“Well you kind of deserved it. Being dragged here like this is annoying. Ouija boards don’t bring us here by choice,” he said, letting go of your face. Now that he’d reprimanded you a little more his frown disappeared entirely, a neutral expression taking its place. “You’ve got your company now. Do you have any food?”
You blinked, your brows furrowing as you tried to understand what he was saying. Was this really how ouija boards worked? What kind of spirits turned up to scold you and then ask for food?
“I was going to order take out,” you told him, at the sound of which he pulled a face.
“Let’s cook something,” he said firmly before standing up. He took a moment to dust himself off, looking around your small living room to inspect your belongings. When he turned his head you noticed a wound in his head. It was bloody and the flesh around it was mangled, although you couldn’t see much of the damage thanks to the dark dry blood. It sat almost at the back of his head but slightly to the side of it, and now that you knew where it was you noticed it when he was facing you directly again. He turned the other way, eyes dragging over the shelves by your TV, making another wound visible. This one was significantly smaller and significantly cleaner as well. You chewed on your bottom lip, suddenly very aware of the nature of the man standing in front of you. “You must’ve hit your head pretty hard. Come on, let’s cook.”
He turned his head a little and you found that he’d been looking at you the whole time. Or more so watching you look at the wound in his head. For the second time since he’d shown up you felt your face burn with embarrassment.
“Yeah, sorry,” you mumbled, standing up and walking the few steps it took to get to your kitchen.
The man wasn’t particularly helpful but you supposed you couldn’t expect much after summoning him from wherever he had come from. He boiled noodles and ate crisps while you fried and cooked the few vegetables you’d found in your fridge, the silence between the two of you a little awkward but not tense. You were still frying the vegetables when he sidled up to you, his shoulder almost pressing into yours.
“Can we put on some music?” he asked, smiling when you nodded. You handed him your phone and he navigated YouTube with ease, making you wonder when exactly he’d passed away. His clothes were a little weird (who the hell wears pants that are half plaid and half denim?) but only in the way that fashion is weird. They didn’t look outdated at all. Before you could ask about them, the kitchen filled with the sound of music playing from your phone. You glanced over at the screen and saw a logo but not much else. He seemed pleased, lifting himself to sit on the counter while you poured sauce over the vegetables.
“ATEEZ?” you asked, squinting slightly to see the logo better. The man hummed in response. “I’ve never heard of them.”
“They’re gonna make it big soon,” he said, nodding solemnly. “They might have a Spotify page up, you should check it out.”
He had a different expression on his face now. In fact it’d be more appropriate to say that there was no expression on his face at all, what with the way his eyes were unfocused and his lips were pressed into a thin line. You looked at the wound in his head again. You could see into his head now that you were closer to it - could see the crater where his brain and skull and scalp should’ve been. Your stomach twisted at the sight and you concentrated on the pan in front of you.
“Can you drain the noodles and split them into two bowls?” you asked quietly, not wanting to disturb the peace he’d found now that he was listening to music. He hopped down from the counter and did as you asked, letting you spoon the vegetables and sauce over both portions of noodles. He grinned at you once you were done.
“This looks way better than take out,” he said, picking up both bowls and carrying them to the living room. You followed after him, picking up your phone and scrolling through the recommended videos. A few videos down a thumbnail popped up of a few guys sitting in what looked like a basement with a shoddy recording studio set up around them. They were grinning at each other - wide, childish grins that you recognised from old photos you had with your own friends. The kind of smile you can’t hold back regardless of how hard you tried. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d smiled like that. It took a few seconds for you to realise that the boy sitting in the middle was the same man now sitting in your living room. You checked the title of the video. ‘ATEEZ - Treasure’. You’d listen to it later, you decided.
You found the man sitting on the floor in front of your coffee table, shovelling noodles into his mouth and clicking through TV channels. His eyes widened almost comically when he saw you, his ears turning pink.
“Sorry,” he said through his mouthful of food. He chewed and swallowed before speaking again. “Sorry I started without you. Nobody’s cooked for me since-”
He stopped talking, his mouth still halfway open with no sound coming out. There was a long moment in which he looked like he might just evaporate in front of you - whether it would be out of embarrassment or sorrow you couldn’t tell. But then he blinked a few times and shut his mouth, turning his attention back to the TV.
“There should be horror movies on, right? Isn’t it Halloween?” he asked, handing you the remote control.
“Yeah, you just didn’t find the movie channels,” you explained, clicking through the channels until you found one playing a movie. “Have you seen Nightmare on Elm Street?”
“Of course I have. Johnny Depp’s really hot in it,” he said.
“Lucky for you,” you said, snorting softly at his comment. He grinned when he looked up to see that Nightmare on Elm Street was playing on the TV, looking over at you and laughing softly.
“Score,” he murmured.
The two of you ate quietly after that, occasionally commenting on the actors in the movie or the special effects. When the movie came to an end you left him with the task of finding another movie to watch while you washed the dishes, the small apartment filled with the white noise of the TV playing and the man’s quiet humming. When you came back to the living room he’d made himself at home in a corner of the sofa, eyes concentrated on a movie you didn’t recognise.
“Thanks for doing the dishes,” he mumbled, pulling his knees up to his chest and picking at a loose thread on his jeans.
“You’re the guest, you don’t have to thank me,” you said, smiling a little. You didn’t want to say it out loud but you were more than happy to wash his dishes and watch the horror movies he was picking out. You hadn’t had a friend over like this in so long - not a friend or acquaintance or anybody - and you'd started to think you weren't going to have anyone over ever again. Sure, he’d been irritable at first but now that he’d settled down he was a pleasant presence. You sat down on the sofa with a soft sigh. “If you want anything just let me know.”
“I want one thing,” he said not a second after you’d spoken, looking over at you with a more serious expression than you’d seen on him since he’d turned up.
“Sure, what is it?” you prompted, his stare making you uncomfortable. You felt stripped bare by the way his eyes narrowed for a split-second, his hands completely still as he looked at you.
“Why did you use that board?” he asked. “Not in the way that I asked you earlier, like ‘what the fuck are you doing’. It’s not like you have any friends here for it to be fun. You didn’t even light candles or any of that spooky stuff. So what was the point?”
You paused, opening and closing your mouth until you realised you must look like a goldfish and you shut your mouth, looking away from him. It wasn’t a very personal question but it certainly felt like one. Maybe it was the sincere tone in his voice or the fact that he was still staring but you felt like you’d been shoved under a spotlight.
“I told you, I wanted company,” you said finally. It wasn’t entirely a lie after all.
“Okay. But you know that you’re alive, right? You can go out to clubs or to friends’ houses or invite people over - other living people,” he said. His tone wasn’t accusatory but you felt a little childish now that he’d put it like that. “You don’t have to call on the dead.”
You nodded, feeling a lump form in your throat as you tried to figure out how to answer him.
“I just didn’t have anyone. To go out with or visit or invite over,” you explained, your voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t have anyone.”
He didn’t say anything for what felt like far too long and you turned around, scared that he might’ve disappeared, but he was still in his corner of the sofa, still staring steadily with his hands placed on his knees and his lips parted as though he was trying to come up with something to say.
“You don’t have to answer, let’s just watch the movie,” you mumbled sheepishly, angling your body away from him so that you wouldn’t have to feel his eyes on you anymore. Once again he didn’t reply. Instead, you felt his hand close around your wrist. His skin was so cold it made you jump, your head whipping around to find him sitting much closer to you than he had been just seconds ago.
“No,” he said. “You’re not alone.”
“What?” you asked, drawing your wrist out of his grip. He let you do so and leaned away from you slightly, his lips forming a frown.
“The last time someone cooked for me was a week before I- a week before I died,” he said, eyes never leaving yours. He visibly swallowed, his Adam’s apple shifting up and down. You wondered if he had the same lump in his throat that you did. “It was my best friend. We were watching movies in my apartment - us and all of our other friends. He cooked for us. We helped him but he always took care of us, so he did most of the cooking.”
You wanted to understand what he was trying to say. From the way he was struggling to keep a straight expression it was clear that he’d made a connection you hadn’t noticed yet and you waited for him to explain.
“And they stayed over for most of the night but when they left I should have-”
He paused and you noticed how his hands were no longer still but shaking. You took them into yours and gave them a soft squeeze. He inhaled sharply, finally breaking the eye contact he’d been holding for so long.
“I felt alone, like you do. I knew I could go out or go back to his place or just ask them to come back but I didn’t,” he said. He looked back up at you, his lashes wet and his bottom lip shaking. “I didn’t mean to- I should have called someone.”
“Hey,” you whispered, reaching forward to pull him into you. He hugged you tightly, clinging to you as though his existence depended on it. His tears soaked through your shirt and your own vision blurred at the feeling, your heart sinking in your chest. “Don’t cry.”
“Hypocrite,” he mumbled between sniffles without any real bite. His hand moved up and down against your back slowly, soothing both you and himself until neither of you were crying anymore. “I made it so I can never see them again. We were gonna make it big together. My friends are really- they’re so talented and I wanted to be there with them when they-”
You shushed him, not wanting him to work himself up again. He shook his head and hugged you tighter.
“You’re not like me. You can still call someone,” he said, his shoulders shaking as he suddenly pulled back to look at you, his hands gripping your shoulders tightly. “If you don’t have anyone I’ll give you his number. My best friend. He'll answer. I know he will.”
There was so much desperation in his voice that it only made more tears roll down your cheeks. He let go of one of your shoulders and wiped your cheeks with his thumb. He was a dozen times more careful than he had been when wiping your face earlier and it made your heart ache.
“I’m a stranger, he won’t answer,” you whispered. The man in front of you shook his head.
“He knows that people need somebody sometimes,” he said gently. “He’ll take care of you the way he took care of me, okay?”
You could tell that wasn’t really the sentence he wanted to say but you didn’t need to hear him say it to know what he meant.
He’ll take care of you the way he can’t take care of me anymore.
“I know I said that ouija boards aren’t supposed to be 800 numbers but you use that board whenever you need company, okay?” he said. His voice had returned somewhat to the harsh tone he’d had when he first turned up in your living room, finding a balance between caring and rude that was reminiscent of how close friends talk to each other. You smiled through the tears in your eyes and nodded. He nodded in return and settled against the sofa to watch TV, gesturing for you to lean into him. “There’s still some of the movie left.”
The next morning the man was nowhere to be found. The only proof that he hadn’t been a figment of your imagination was the extra bowl drying on the dish rack and the notification on your lock screen from a new contact named Seonghwa in response to a message that you remembered the man typing out into your phone. He was inviting you out to dinner with his friends.
The final piece of evidence was that you were now following ATEEZ on Spotify. Their top song started with an audio clip of the man you’d met last night, giggling and talking to the rest of his friends in what sounded like the happiest voice you’d ever heard. He was talking about the next album he wanted to write. His voice was nowhere to be found in the rest of the song.
It hurt to hear.

˚ SUMMARY. two unlikely students are paired together for a documentary — but sometimes love finds us in peculiar ways ( aka an our beloved summer au. or also in other words high school unlikely match / rival au )
˚ FEATURING. ayato, albedo, childe, kaeya, thoma, xiao x gn! reader
˚ WARNINGS. mentions of “pretty” in albedo’s. mild swearing. usage of mx
˚ LINKS. masterlist
˚ NOTES. im posting this even though it technically isnt valentines day yet for me but by the time i post this tmrw it wont be valentines for most people so … enjoy !! all fluff :D
“a documentary,” you say, slowly.
“yes,” the cameraman says. “it’s only for a month. we’re pairing up the [pair] and we’ll basically filming you throughout the month. just pretend we aren’t there — it’s just a documentary about youth life, and you just go on about your day-to-day lives.”
you hesitate. this sounds like a mistake.
it’s one month, a voice in your head whispers. you can do one month, can’t you?
you clear your throat. “so who’s the other person going to be?”
kamisato ayato has a rep around inazuma high and it isn’t necessarily a bad one
the only thing you know about him is that his family practically runs the town
and apparently, an asshole
he has a rep for being closed off – you never see him hang out with anyone other than his sister and thoma. and you’re on good terms with thoma - but you’ve never talked to ayato
you’ve never had reason to; you’re never in the same class as him, and he always seemingly disappears every time you approach thoma
stuck up ass, is basically what you’ve always thought of him; he often had an air to him that said he’s too good for everyone
you think he looks down on you because you’re not as prestigious as he is - he’s proper, he comes from a rich family. he probably doesn’t even need the money from the documentary
still, at first, in the documentary, you try to be friends with him.
it goes horribly wrong.
on the first day of the documentary, you buy yourself a coffee at the local coffee shop. and you end up buying him one as well
however, when you try to give it to him, you end up tripping it and spilling it all over his business project that he’s stayed up all night to work on
there’s a beat of absolute silence as he slowly looks up to stare at you. you swear his eyes are burning holes into your head
and then he slowly looks back down, grabbing his water bottle, unscrewing the top lid, presumably to take a drink.
“sorry” you say, hurriedly. “i was trying to give you coffee, because i know you always stay up-”
he dumps the water over your head
a small shriek gets stuck in your throat, as you get soaked from head to toe
“i said sorry,” you say. your voice isn’t angry, still in shock. but the anger rises in your chest all the same
“oh.” he looks back down at his project. his voice is nothing short of sarcastic. “sorry.”
and then, at that moment, you decide that you hate this kid. with a burning passion
and of course he never gets into trouble because nobody would ever suspect ayato of doing something bad
the only person who sympathizes with you is thoma who just shrugs with a crooked grin and says “he’s sly. there’s a reason he’s never gotten caught.”
you’re forced to sit in the same classes, next to each other, for the sake of the documentary
but even through the filming, you’ve never been afraid to tell the camera how much you dislike ayato
“oh things i hate?” you ask, staring at the camera. “kamisato ayato.”
he doesn’t turn his head to you but you can see his scowl all the same. “funny, i was going to say the same.”
your arguments are equivalent to a child’s argument — often times, when arguments spark, they’re accidents like the coffee; it only gives him more fuel to dislike you, and you to dislike him
once, he decides to give you coffee with a “sorry :(“ sticky note attached to it
and like the fool you are, you decide to drink it
he watches from outside the door, not being able to resist a smirk
salt floods your taste buds, but instead of spitting it out, you make eye contact with him in the door and continue to down the entire thing
ayato also basically has this claim to a parking spot in the school - it’s not technically his, but everyone’s agreed it’s ayato’s spot
you stole it as soon as you could
it becomes a competition on who can get to school first to steal the spot. and that leads to both of you being to school two hours earlier
which means you actually spend a lot of time together ! and soon, your dislike for him, melts into something softer
you like spending time with him. in fact, you look forward to it
and you don’t miss how his smiles become fond - sometimes, when you’re on the verge of falling asleep in class, you see him smile softly as you rest your head on his shoulders
or sometimes, when you wake up, you just find his jacket over your shoulders
and there’s this one time when someone else makes an off hand comment about your clumsiness
the next day, the kid doesn’t show up to school. and when he shows up again, his face is bright red and his hair has been dyed green
when you turn to ayato, he just gives you his signature smirk with a shrug. “i don’t get caught.”
you two end up terrorizing your teachers. they never figure out who has been leaving alarm clocks around the building to disturb class, and ayato always turns to you with a fond smile
“how do i feel about y/n now?” he breaks into a soft smile. “i love them — i couldn’t ask for a better partner in crime. but don’t tell them i said that. i will never hear the end of it.”
you’ve never talked to albedo before this - but you’ve noticed him from afar
you’re both top of your class - both of you competing for number one spot
he’s never had many feelings towards you, other than the fact that you’re smart. he notices your name on the top scorers of exams, but knows nothing of you other than that
you never see albedo hang out with anyone - he has a few people he talks to, but none that he ever seems to be friends with
and it’s not for a lack of trying either - you ask kaeya about him once, wanting to get an idea of who albedo was
and kaeya just says “albedo — a strange one. he’s nice. but don’t interrupt him while he’s working. or ask him to hang out. he will always say no. it’s quite embarrassing.”
but when you talk to albedo, he’s actually quite nice! he’s never been anything but kind to you
you work together on a lab, and he’s always been patient with you. you’re able to bounce ideas off each other, and you’ve never worked with someone better
the rivalry doesn’t kick in until the second day. and then oh boy
but you also work at a daycare after school hours — and there, you take care of a child named klee
and you love klee ! klee’s the best !
sometimes, you help klee make these little water bombs as pranks to help her terrorize this “big bad brother” she complains about in daycare
and you share all your knowledge with her
and then, one day, when klee decides to set off her bombs on “big bad brother” albedo asks klee where she learned to make these new kind of bombs
klee — the absolute icon she is — isn’t able to keep a secret. “mx y/n helped me,” she says, sheepishly, swinging back and forth
albedo stops. “y/n l/n?”
klee shrugs. “i think. they says they’re your age. i like mx y/n more than you. they let me go fish blasting!”
so the next day, albedo, naturally comes to ask if you work in a daycare and you know klee
“yeah, i know klee.” you chuckle, thinking about her. “the other day, i helped her make mini water bombs — not a dangerous kind, don’t worry — to prank her brother. she’s amazing.”
he gives you a deadpan look. “klee’s my sister.”
oh. oh shit.
“and by the way,” he says, “i make better water bombs than you.”
and if to prove it, the next day, you find a container on your desk. and when you open it, water sprays in your face
and next to you, albedo is chuckling
oh it is so on.
you do most of your pranks through klee, bribing her to prank albedo. and albedo does the same
you both compete to be klee’s favorite — and whenever albedo comes pick klee up, you both have to tone down on the swearing
but you two are never mean to each other - it’s always been fun little pranks, with no mean intentions behind it, something you both know
“how do you feel about albedo?” the cameramen ask you, once, for the documentary.
“albedo?” the cameras don’t miss the small smile that spreads across your face. “he’s kind. a little closed off, but an absolute menace.”
but even though your words don’t say the whole truth, the cameras catch it
the cameras catch every time when you’re working late in the lab and he brings snacks for you
or every time either of you don’t understand something, you’re always patient, while explaining it to the other
or sometimes, during class, if you’ve pulled an all nighter, he’ll let you rest on his shoulder as he takes a little more notes as usual that way you’ll be caught up in class
and one day, when you’re taking of klee, she tells you
“my brother says he likes you.” she grins from ear to ear. “he says you’re very pretty.”
needless to say, you played a clip of your documentary at the wedding
“how do i feel about y/n?” albedo hums. “don’t tell them i said this, but i’m happy klee likes them. i want to make them apart of our family.”
more undercut !

before xiao, there was alatus. xiao x gn!reader. warnings: angst, mcd!!, blood, xiao's backstory. wc: 2,708. semi proofread.
before xiao, there was alatus.
alatus who served an unknown god with a deep desire for power and used him to slaughter those who opposed his wishes. helpless and weak alatus who devoured dreams and crush the innocent’s hopes. feeble alatus who withstood countless wounds and near-death experiences.
it was him who deserved the terrified looks of his victims, begging him to spare even at least their children and kill them—only for his body to move without his permission. he who dirtied his soul and tainted his hands at the blood that painted his face.
“you’re tending to wounds that won’t kill me,” alatus muttered.
“immortal yes, invincible no.” the once white cloth you had been using from a week ago was now a light pink and alatus knew it was the blood of his victims. it was wet and cold as you wiped the cloth across his face, removing all the red splatters and cleaning the wounds that he newly acquired.
“you’re thinking lowly of me. you know i’ll get dirty again once i step out and—” he let out a muffled noise as you wiped the cloth on his mouth, shutting him up from his self-deprecating talk. still, this earned you a glare.
smiling lightly—one that looked almost apologetic, you look down briefly. “i know…you hate seeing the blood of others on you. so let me do my job just this once, okay?”
of course, there were many things alatus hated in this world. he hated how you were always right. he also hated how you made him feel. hated how he became selfish at the thought of being with you.
you were a mortal and he an adeptus who still could not fend for himself. while you were free, alatus would be forever chained to his master. he’d told you many times to leave him be, that he was dangerous, that you’ll get yourself killed by him, but you merely smiled at his claims.
“stop looking so worried,” you giggled. “your master won’t come and barge in here. what do you know? maybe he’ll make me fight you and think you’re unfit for the job because you’ll lose to me!”
alatus scoffed—visibly frowning—and crossed his arms as he gave you a look of detest. “you mortals and your imagination.”
“and this mortal,” you gestured to yourself, “is taking care of an injured adeptus.”
you leaned towards him, gently placing a hand on his cheek as you look up at him. “alatus,” you whispered.
he leaned into your touch, humming. your skin was warm and palm lightly calloused from the everyday work you did but he loved the way you held him. you let out a small laugh, thumb brushing over the healed wound on his cheek as he cracked an eye open to gaze at you tenderly.
“i went to town today and zhao told me there would be a war. do you think it’s true?” you mumbled, already knowing you would be separated from him.
“your god will protect you,” was all alatus could say to you.
war meant death, countless and thousands who would perish at the hands of whoever was responsible. and though alatus protected you from the shadows, he would not be able to be by your side once a war would brew. someone like him who bathed in death was for the battlefield—to kill, to destroy. war meant separation and alatus feared the day your hands wouldn’t be as warm as you held him now.
“hah…i suppose,” you said, your shoulders dropping. “at least i can spend today with you.”
“you talk as if our time is limited,” he scowled. “it’s not, at least for now. i’ll…still come by.”
the lies he told were piling up and he knew they would soon spill out. still, if the lies meant your happiness, alatus would tell a thousand just for the smile on your face to stay. he knew it was wrong—lying directly to your face as you believed him—but he couldn’t dare to see the look of anguish ever again.
with a content hum, you pulled him into your arms and basked in the setting sun.
–
alatus will never tell you how he felt whenever he was with you. how his stomach would make him uneasy and transform him into a small shy cat, afraid that he’d hurt you in any way should you come close to him. how his day immediately brightens up when he sees you standing by a tree, a stern expression on your face.
"you have blood all over you again," you'd say with a sigh.
and even if you hid the fact that you were terrified of the things he did, you took him into your arms and ran your fingers in his hair. the sweet nothings you whispered when he’d nap on your lap even for a few minutes, leaning down to kiss his forehead made his heart swell.
and he’s glad that he didn’t abandon you the day he saw you.
instead, he listened to the way his name falls from your lips. he chose to lie in your arms and listen to the faint sound of your beating heart. alatus has looked into your eyes as he caresses your face in the moonlight, humming as you whispered about your day to him.
you were all alatus had in this godforsaken world. he who is the devil would lay at your feet and repent for his actions. if alatus could never forgive himself, you would take his face by your hands and kiss his eyes for they were the reason he saw himself in such a bad light.
the only thing alatus wanted was to be by your side. forever.
he would hold your hand and watch the way your eyes would sparkle at the sight of the sun setting everyday if he wanted. carry you on his back if you ever felt tired from walking whenever you’d set out on a new journey with him. he would eat the food you prepared for him, biting back a soft smile as you complained that his master would treat him so cruelly to not let him eat.
he adored you wholeheartedly.
but you were mortal, ever so fragile.
there would be times alatus would not be able to be by your side and the thought frightened him more times than you’d think.
how could he live a life without you?
he was selfish but he knew you’d still risk it all for him. it was only natural for him to do the same. you were mortal and you’d vanish soon enough but alatus would do anything to keep you alive.
–
“it’s a new dish i’ve been trying out. the ingredients are kind of expensive, so don’t expect me to make it every time!” you reminded as you set the two plates down on the table.
“your fingers are all…” alatus muttered as he picked up the spoon, eyeing your bandaged fingers—blood still seeping through.
you held them to your chest, offering him a laugh. “it’s nothing, i swear! don’t freak out if you find blood in your food—i’m kidding, i swear.”
he almost looked offended at your statement, looking down at the plate and nudging it with the spoon. it was times like this that alatus did enjoy your presence and warmth. just the two of you basking in the moonlight. the food quickly melted into his mouth and he closed his eyes.
“well?” you peered at him, nudging his shoulder with yours.
alatus turned to you, paused and reached his hand out to bring your forehead closer to his lips. he resumed eating after.
there was nothing he could say but he knew that you already knew the answer to your question.
you leaned onto him, your head on his shoulders as you looked up at the night sky. “hm. let’s name it…almond tofu? it’s made from that, or maybe we should call it tofu almond.”
“it sounds like something a child would call,” he commented.
“alatus!” you gasped. “take that back!”
“i never said it wasn’t delicious.”
“i suppose you’re right… i hate you and your remarks.”
alatus chuckles lightly, nodding. he takes you in his arms and breathes you in—like a bee needing flowers to survive. you were the light that shone brightly beside the devil, his savior and sanctuary.
-
fight for me and get me a seat as an archon, his master had demanded all so suddenly.
as he had always been in, alatus was back on the battlefield. his polearm would slash and destroy anything that came his way should they disobey his master, his god. the blood of the innocent on his hands as he slaughtered each and every one.
alatus would never forget the terrified looks on their face, begging him to spare their child.
he hated every second of it. he could not stop even if he wanted to, the strings on his body were being controlled by his god. his god who desperately wanted the seat as one of the seven—greedy and merciless, he spared no one.
red and black was all alatus could see—he had forgotten the colorful skies, the greenery of nature, and the color of the love you gave him.
his soul was tainted and dirty, no repenting could ever make you forgive him now. should alatus crawl to your feet and beg for forgiveness, he knew you would stare at him in disgust and punish him for what he had done.
home was no longer with you, no longer in your arms that would wrap around him and have you whispering soft nothings. alatus was leaving battlefield after battlefield and soon, it had grown into his home.
days felt like years and he wished to head back to you each time he would rest—but he was bound by contracts and his weakness, you.
-
“…isn’t that him? he’s disgusting. i can’t believe he’s one of us.”
“it’s like he doesn’t have a mind of his own! what are you—don’t leave me!”
“…master, alatus has caused a great casualty. your soldiers are dying at his hands as well.”
“…master, alatus has killed general zho… we must kill him, it’s the only way—"
“you dare disobey me? alatus is my greatest soldier.”
“alatus, you must kill everyone who opposes me.”
“no god will save you, you damned devil!”
and soon, alatus had begun to kill gods. gods who waged war with him and his master, gods who wanted to flee and save their people, gods who did not care about the seating of celestia.
do you actually think you’re not a monster?
do you know what’s worse than a demon like you? a liar.
you killed people.
no one would forgive you.
what would [name] think?
what would [name] think?
whaT WOULD [NAME] THINK?
it’s in the most gruesome battle that he awakens at your name.
“the name xiao is that of a spirit who encountered great suffering and hardship. he endured much suffering, as you have. use this name from now on.” morax stood in front of alatus—no, xiao.
his master was now dead.
he had won the battle—but at what cost?
xiao fell on his knees. his world had crumbled.
death was inevitable, it really was. but he had told himself he would go to great lengths to stop death from clinging to him—stop clinging to anyone he loved. he had never loved anyone as much as you before, you were the only one he knew how to love.
so, tell him, why did death cling to him?
a minute earlier. ten minutes earlier. no, an hour earlier. god, maybe a week earlier. you, who he swore to protect with all his heart, clung to him desperately, sobs escaping your lips as you trembled in his arms.
“alatus…it hurts! it hurts!”
xiao bit back the tears, his head buried on your neck as you cried on his chest. “it’ll be okay, you’ll be okay, i promise,” he soothed, lips shaking as he held you tighter.
“i don’t want to die, alatus, i don’t want to!” your voice was weak, full of fear and heavy breaths. xiao wishes he could hear your voice from before, joyous and teasing.
like everyone he had killed, your blood was on his hands. on his arms. on his clothes. on his face. your blood was everywhere on him. it seeped into him and he could feel every bit of it. xiao wanted to vomit, you were everything he had and you were dying before him.
red—it was all he could see.
the blood that seeped through your clothes, from your arms to your middle to your legs. the wounds on your face must have hurt—he wishes he was there earlier. he would have kept you safe. he should have kept you safe.
your cries were even worse. it was the only thing he could hear as he held on to you, tears already down his face as he hung his mouth open—unable to accept the fact that you laid before him with blood. your cries were painful and it hurt him. hurt him till his bones and hurt him in his heart.
sobs wracked your body and you could feel the pain. how painful your wounds were.
“it hurts!” you cried, “it hurts so bad!”
xiao ran his fingers through your hair, attempting to soothe your cries. his hand reaching out to cup your face as you looked up at him with tear-stricken eyes. you cherished life and you cherished being with him.
losing life meant losing him.
“you won’t die,” he repeated over and over again.
please…
xiao wished it was enough to comfort you but really, it was for him. for him to stop falling apart and hurry and take you to the adepti.
“alatus,” you choked out, “please i want to live, i want-i want to be with you…please save me.”
a new name, he wanted to tell you. he lived under a new god now. the cruel master that you hated was now dead and he was saved. the war you had told him about was now over.
you can be together as usual now. he had so many things to say but his body trembled and you simply cried into his shoulder, begging him and any god that you wanted to live and to be saved.
the pain was unmeasurable and both of you knew that you were unsavable. still, you begged him to save you. you were being selfish, so selfish. but you wanted to be with him, feel his smile against your shoulder, have him bury his face into your neck in embarrassment.
“you’ll live. you’ll live. i’ll-i’ll take you to-to morax,” he spluttered, already making up his mind that he should at least try anything to save you. but you hissed in pain when he lifted you up and xiao knew.
there was nothing he could do.
alatus, what do you think of my dish?
alatus, do you think we can gather some qingxin?
alatus, kiss me?
alatus, welcome home!
alatus.
alatus.
alatus, do you want me to die?
alatus, why are you so useless?
alatus, you killed me.
(i didn’t…!)
“alatus, i love you, i love you, i love you,” you whispered against his skin. briefly, you wanted to see him smile at you but you were already being too selfish; so, you buried your face into the crook of his neck and closed your eyes at the warmth he brought you. “even-even until death, i will-will love you.”
“you’ll be okay,” xiao whispered, hand by your head as tears rolled down his cheeks. he was weak—he’d always been weak. “it’s okay, i love you too… so, please… it’ll be okay, it won’t hurt anymore. i love you, i love you."
xiao could only wish you managed to hear it.
before liyue and its people, there was you who he swore to protect.
before xiao, there was alatus who wished that you could have stayed with him as xiao.
notes the 2.7 archon quest absolutely wrecked me, i felt so sad seeing xiao wanting to sacrifice himself so i wrote this to help <3 hope u like it because i know i did
