Talks With My Dog

I wrote this piece on a whim a few years ago. I really like how it came out.

Talks with my dog

When the aliens came they spoke with everything; insects, marine animals, birds, wild animals, our farmstock and our pets! Some of us were worried about what the animals would say about us, some were excited about the possibility of animal to human translation. Some said they even spoke to the micro-organisms in the soil.

We thought they'd talk with us next. These beings who could communicate with every thing else on our planet. We sent them invitations to summits. We tried to have conversations with them when we saw them.

They didn't even look at us.

Some idiot with a gun got angry at being ignored and shot one. The response was violent and definitive, the whole town died within seconds. The state retaliated, as did the country. As far as we know there are no humans left alive over there now.

We might have all gone to war, except that our pets, the insects and the very birds attacked anyone who approached weaponry and missile storage locations. Anyone who got past them was violently ill. Those who persisted died of ruptured bowels, blood toxicity.

They left, never talking with us.

I'm making progress in talks with my dog.

Some of the women were so contaminated that radiation could still be detected using a Geiger counter of their graves in 1987. 62 years after the chief medical examiner of Essex County, New Jersey, Harrison Stanford Martland, MD, published his report that identified the radioactive material the women had ingested as the cause of their bone disease and aplastic anemia, and ultimately death.

so much rage for anyone who tells the story of the radium girls like “ohoho weren’t people in the 20s fucking stupid” and not like “corporate greed has always cost people’s lives and health”

I admire people who can keep a tub of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream in the freezer for a week.

The celebrity Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors being some of the best ones is like the retail equivalent of having to go to a restaurant and order a rootin tootin yeehaw cowboy burger or something

One of my recent posts pissed of the MAGA cult and they're crawling out from under the refrigerator to spout all the classic conspiracy jams in the comments. But, I wanted to address one specific challenge tacked to the end of this guy's particularly tedious rant...

One Of My Recent Posts Pissed Of The MAGA Cult And They're Crawling Out From Under The Refrigerator To

First of all, *your.

And you want 5 things the Democratic Party did to improve your day-to-day prosperity? Here's just a handful of the countless things FOX News will never tell you because they like Republicans to stay scared, uninformed, and angry. (Hint: It's how they make money off of you.):

Medicare and Medicaid (Medical debt is the No. 1 reason for personal bankruptcy in the U.S. and these programs help you avoid that.)

Social Security (We all pay in so we all can live a little better in retirement, but the guy you voted for is likely going to make it go away. Oopsies!)

40-hour work week (That's right, Democrats gave you "the weekend.")

Overtime pay (Bet you've enjoyed that a time or two.)

Federal Farm Loan Act (Among other things this act does, it helps farmers get affordable food to your table… or it did before the guy you voted for started dismantling all that, but whatevs!)

Family and Medical Leave Act (Yes, Democrats gave you paid sick leave.)

Pell grants and student loan program (I'm assuming you don't care about this because it's about getting a better education.)

Affordable Care Act [This helps everyone get health insurance by creating a competitive marketplace (capitalism for good!), expands Medicaid eligibility (socialism for good!), and makes sure your employer can't fuck you over if you get sick (government regulation for good!) Oh, also, if you enjoy the Affordable Care Act, but hate Obamacare, boy, do I have some shocking news for you… They're the same thing.]

And thanks to Warren, Ohio's Tribune Chronicle — specifically, Ron Urchek's Letter to the Editor of that paper — that compiled these and other reasons to thank a Democrat. Because journalism also matters.

In fact, it's so important it's the only profession mentioned in the U.S. Constitution because a free press is supposed to keep the powerful in check. But, you'd just call that fake news, I guess.

Astro Boy or Kiki's Delivery Service

That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science

Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?

English class is excellent, but it needs to be more than just English class.

We need open ended research questions to teach folk how to formulate questions, interrogate data, state assumptions and test those assumptions. For example, using a data set of Senate votes, you can teach how voting works and how votes are counted (Civics), how two party preferred is calculated (Civics and Maths) and get students to write code (Tech) to process the data in various ways. Then use their findings (English) to support an argument (for example living a side on FPTP versus PV).

Science classes often cover pseudo science, but they should also cover how to analyse your test results, and what to do when your test results don't match the results you anticipated.

Religious education classes (where they exist) often cover cults, but everyone needs to be taught about how to identify cult-like indoctrination. It should be part of Health (or equivalent).

We need classes on relationships (not just sex ed), such as the importance of self respect, respecting the others, what healthy relationships look like (including friendships), what red flags to watch out for, what to do when you don't feel safe.

"they should teach media literacy in schools" english class "they should teach students how to spot misinformation" it's english class "they should teach kids critical thinking" it's called english class

I can see why Mastermind gets "disaster bi". What a great piece! Thank you for putting this together @beanthebugboi ❤️❤️

Canon/Headcanon likelihood chart

So I've been thinking about @macdenlover 's "levels of headcanon" chart (about how heavily a HC is influenced by canon), so I decided to make my own scale about how likely a HC is to be true (including different levels of canon) using queer cartoon characters as examples :)

I just spent an hour making this because I was bored. Enjoy.
