out of curiosity, do you have a favorite variation of the sign for āqueerā? ive seen the rainbow one propped up lately but ive always loved and preferred the variations with the open 8.
anyways fjfkfskdjg thats all.
- @asl-emojis
I hadn't seen the open 8 one before. In looking it up I found two.
There was one where the middle finger brushes past the side of the signers head. The author said about the sign "To me, this sign reflects our history as a resilient community"
The other was flicking out from under the chin. "this sign succinctly can be interpreted as an identity of āIām not queer as in gay, but queer as in f*ck you!ā"
I've always liked the rainbow version but the "queer as in fuck you" might be a new favorite

Heres a transcript from their website:
[Image ID: screenshot from the DailyMoth.com. Its logo, a lightbulb with a moth on it, is in the top left corner. A transcript reads:
Did you know that the famous Greek philosopher Socrates who lived in the fifth century B.C. may have been the first person to write about sign language? He said, āSuppose that we had no voice or tongue, and wanted to indicate objects to one another, should we not, like the deaf and dumb, make signs with the hands, head and the rest of the body?ā

I got this piece of history from this book.
[āThe Deaf Community in America: History in the Makingā]
The authors Melvia and Ronald Nomeland said the remarks by Socrates āillustrates that deaf people existed thenā¦ā

i am hoh and know asl! i'm visiting a deaf/hoh kindergarten class to do a storytime and i thought the stylized animal designs (like the duck) were really cute as visual aids :)
In that case, yes, I am incredibly honored. Thank you!
