Pride Month Celebration Week Day 6: Santana Lopez

Quinn Fabray & Santana Lopez in 4.14 | I Do
THIS!!!
Once upon a time I decided to take a deep-dive into Santana’s relationship with her sexuality in the early seasons and specifically her sexual and/or romantic relationships with men. Today is the day we finally do that, or at least the first half of it by covering season 1. Thank you to anon from the other day a few weeks months back for the final push and for putting into words a lot of what has been living in my mind rent-free for ages.
Before we really begin, I want to establish a few things. First, like Anon said, all of what I’m going to detail is really just a happy accident as Santana wasn’t actually written to be a lesbian and therefore not one struggling with comphet in season 1. We can acknowledge that authorial intent, or rather the lack thereof, but still find meaning in how the show actually turned out and how it reads in retrospect, now that we know that Santana is a lesbian. I think this is important to note because my goal with these two posts isn’t to argue that it’s always been that deep; far be it from me to give Glee too much credit. No, I’m simply arguing that, intended or not, a comphet reading still exists and makes Santana’s character all the more fascinating in the context of her later journey and characterization. Aka we’re going to read into things but hey, if the things present themselves in such a fitting way then why not.
Second, let’s define what comphet even is before we go any further. So compulsory heterosexuality is what it says on the tin and usually refers to lesbian women who, because of outside pressure or internalized homophobia, feel like they have to conform to heteronormative standards and be attracted to and be with men. It’s often associated with the erasure of lesbianism and female desire, as outlined in Adrienne Rich’s essay who popularized the term in the 80s. I don’t want to recite a whole wikipedia page here so going to link it here and proceed with the definition from above. Alternatively, see the Equality Archive for more of an overview. It’s something many lesbians struggle with to differing degrees, whether that includes lying to themselves as well or just forcing themselves to be with men even though they know they’re not attracted to them due to heteronormative expectations and a fear of being perceived differently. It’s often the explanation as to why a lesbian woman has been with men in the past and yet identifies as a lesbian. As an aside though, lesbians don’t owe anyone an explanation for anything and can do whatever they like 😊 But the concept of comphet can help explain these tendencies and make sense of one’s own identity.
Okay, with that out of the way, I’ll be exploring through the course of two posts how this concept of comphet relates to Santana and her relationships with men as portrayed in seasons 1 and 2. This first post is going to be divided into two main portions, her relationships with Puck and Finn in season 1. Since Santana isn’t a main character in season 1 and just serves a purpose in others’ stories, most of her stuff does relate to the two boys and it’s through those relationships that we get a glimpse at her character.
This is an important thing to note about Santana’s beginnings as a character and therefore her season 1 story: that it’s not actually about her. What I mean is that she starts out as a background character who, even as she starts getting less generic lines, is still ultimately there as a supporting character to main players. She starts getting actual plotlines in the second half of the season but they’re still not about building her own character; they’re about stirring the pot for the main cast, so the story she does get makes sense from that perspective but also serves the point I’m trying to make about comphet. I’d also just like to acknowledge that it might sound counterintuitive to center a discussion about a lesbian around her relationships with men but that is exactly what comphet is, at the end of the day, so I figured the way to combat it would be through deconstructing it.
And now, without further ado!

This is something I’ve believed since Prom Queen 2x20.
Let’s start with why I believe this would be a perfect full circle moment for Santana’s high school experience.
Santana Lopez had from the beginning wanted to be McKinley High’s “top hoe”.
In season one we are introduced to her as Quinn’s second in command, but it’s made obvious that she wants the full glory.
Of course we don’t know why popularity is important to her yet, but we’ll get there.
When Quinn becomes pregnant Santana takes the opportunity to take over the cheerios.
She does support her friend with the New Directions, but as far as one-on-one chats and encouragement go, she gives nada. She is even out right cruel about Quinn’s situation, there’s no denying that.
Throughout season one she focuses her attention on the two most popular guys. Noah Puckerman is her on-again-off-again boy toy who she feels nothing for until someone else wants him. Finn Hudson is purely a conquest to cement her place on the Cheerios.
Onto season two. We find out why Santana is so cagey and cruel. Santana is in love with her best friend Brittany Pierce. But with raging internalised homophobia and the general homophobia of the time and place she suppresses these feelings.
We finally get insight from Santana herself, she’s scared of being herself and the consequences.
As she starts to address and deal with these feelings she lashes out, but she also shows her soft side. We begin to see that she can be a “hardcore friend” when she wants to be.
Then we get to Prom Queen. After Kurt is announced Santana breaks down and tells the last of her insecurities. She has been an outcast all her life and believes she always will be. She wanted to be prom queen so that there would be one night where she felt normal and accepted. That’s why popularity has been so important to her.
Finally, season three. Santana and Brittany start dating officially, yay! But in secret as Santana isn’t ready to come out publicly.
Then disaster strikes and she is outed to the entire state by Finn Hudson. I will not start talking about this event because I will never stop. Because of this she comes out to her parents who are supportive, but up next is her abuela who is suggested to be her main caregiver, and definitely the person Santana looks up to the most. When she comes out to her she is rejected and disowned. Santana’s worst fears have come true, being herself has had terrible consequences.
Despite this heartbreak she moves on. Throughout this season we get to see Santana Lopez’s friendship in full force.
She gives Brittany the confidence to run for Senior Class President, she helps Kurt when Blaine is assaulted, forgives Finn for his unforgivable act, makes up with Rachel, goes to help shut down Sebastian’s bullying, etc. Now to Senior Prom.
Promasaurus is the perfect episode to complete Santana’s high school arc. Her and Brittany winning prom queen and king, respectively, would show her that being herself isn’t something that always ends in rejection.
Her whole life Santana has known she is different from the norm and wants to feel fully accepted by her peers, this is how it happens. Unlike Prom Queen, where she doesn’t win, she is finally being her full self and for once she is being rewarded for it.
Her metamorphosis from a conniving, cruel, scheming mean girl to an open, warm, still snarky, out-and-proud lesbian is complete. Now she isn’t popular because she’s feared, she’s popular because she’s herself and she’s brave.
The relationship with Brittany that took her so long to come to terms with in fear of rejection is being put on a pedestal.
There are also the real world effects. Seeing a sapphic couple be Prom royalty and be celebrated by their peers would be instrumental to young queer kids, even in a TV show.
In conclusion Santana Lopez and Brittany Pierce should have been Prom royalty. The story line was set up for over a season, and it is much more meaningful than what actually happened. Thanks for your time.
Curious if you saw the comment about Santana feeling straight in season 1 or something💀
Oof 💀
I think I even replied "it's called comphet" or something? Before deciding that thread was not for me lol. Like, I get it, she wasn't written queer in season 1 but RIB happen to be the luckiest bastards so her story works perfectly even in season 1. Girl literally invites Finn out on a date just to ignore him and offer to make out with Brittany instead. Then she asks him out again and cannot stop insulting him. She very explicitly states that she's not interested in him as much as the idea being seen with him, the status symbol of it all. She's turned off the moment Puck falls down the social hierarchy and is only interested again when another girl enters the picture and makes him relevant again. She never once shows any interest in them as people or as boys, just the symbolic value of their social points and how others perceive them.
Even without the hindsight of season 2 and the rest of the show, I can't believe anyone could watch season 1 and try to argue that she reads as 100% straight. She overcompensates if anything, something that is very clear in early season 2 and e.g. her Carl comments. (lmao remember when someone tried to argue she was bi because of those comments and that saying she was lesbian is propaganda or something idk it was wild) I mean, what bitch would ask a guy out by saying "it is exhausting to look at you"? Not one that is even remotely into him, I'll tell you that.
Santana was never straight even when she was written as such. She's just that gay. An icon, truly.
In Don’t You Want Me Baby, when Santana says “I want you, I do,” she was talking about Rachel, not Blaine.
every time i see someone defending finn for outing santana i lose a little bit of hope for humanity :/
Quinn: My darkest secret is that I’m a lesbian b-
Santana: That’s your darkest secret
Quinn: Wha- no, let me finish
Santana: Nope, your darkest secret is that you’re a lesbian.
Rachel: Not much of a secret though
every time i remember that the quinntana hookup is canon, 10 years is added to my lifespan
These bitches breaking their backs being one of the only happy endings for wlw. Also I just fucking love glee. So enjoy!

Sometimes I forget why I’m not very active on gleddit, and then I see “Santana should have been bi” and then I remember 💔

Quinn Fabray & Santana Lopez in 4.14 | I Do
(written by a lesbian aka me)
i'm gonna start off by saying, the line “i'm attracted to girls, i'm attracted to guys” was a blatant lie. here's why:
after shagging finn in season one episode fifteen (the power of madonna), the first thing she did was ask for a burger??? like girl why was that your first thought 😭😭
also, she can be seen briefly breaking up with puck in one of the episodes (i'm not sure when) solely because he got low credit scores like wow... no sweetie, it's not “what i need AS woman”, it's “what i need IS a woman”-
she keeps telling the club that finn's kissing was not worth a buck, or that he was bad at sex. i dunno, have you considered... maybe you're not into guys??
or the fact that when she was dating sam, she wrote a whole song dissing at how big his lips were 😭
then comes blame it on the alcohol. she drunk-cried and called quinn “prettier than her”.... or when she basically made out with sam to get back at brittany for dating artie (it's pretty obvious tbh)
her basically saying that puck without the missing mohawk didn't turn her on is as good as just saying “i'm not into you, i never was”
speaking of which, when puck got to juvie (keep in mind they were sort of?? dating at that time) the first thing we see her doing is... making out with brittany, and she didn't care about that man at all. like girl, at least PRETEND to care 😭
also, look at the way she and brittany interacted in season one, she was never that loving with puck or sam (unless she was trying to make someone else jealous)
then there's her explaining how she ALWAYS cheated on the guys she dated (and never felt bad), and when it came to brittany, or dani, for that matter, she would either feel bad about cheating on them, or wouldn't cheat on them at all
part 1 & 2 here!
18. marley rose - asexual lesbian
- had more chemistry with unique than jake or ryder (or any guy for that matter) # to ME
- she and unique are girlfriends (alex confirmed it)
- didn't want to have sex when dating jake (i get some people aren't ready, but idk she just gives off ace vibes idk how to explain)
19. unique adams - trans mtf (canon) & sapphic
- dating marley (like i said, alex confirmed it)
- we never really got to see her love life that much so...
- BUT i know she likes girls
20. jake puckerman - bisexual
- i ship jake and ryder more than i ship them w/ marley lmao
- idk it just makes sense that he's bi
- (also he's jake lopez - santana's brother # to me)
21. ryder lynn - gay
- i have no explanation for this whatsoever 😭
22. kitty wilde - sapphic
- tbf, i didn't know if i should make her bi or les (because if anything, she's definitely not straight)
- i found her cute with artie so because of wildeabrams, my headcanon for her changes a lot, so i ended up sticking with sapphic 😭
- have you SEEN the heart eyes she gave quinn??? like she had such a huge crush on that girl omfg
part 4 (final part) tmr! 🫶
part one can be found here:
9. mercedes jones - pansexual
- she wore a heart necklace with the colours of the pan flag in 3x13 (heart)
- stared at santana's boobs while singing “the boy is mine”
- had hot girls wearing bikinis in her musical fantasies (as seen in “bust your windows”)???
- “finn, you look handsome, quinn you look hot” 2x20 (prom queen)
10. brittany pierce - bisexual (canon) & genderfluid
- i don't really have an explanation lmao 😭😭
11. tina cohen-chang - bisexual & non-binary
- don't really have an explanation for the nb one tbh
- tike is bi4bi because i said so
- when making out with mike in 2x06 (never been kissed), she moaned beiste's name 😭
- they also use they/she pronouns because i said so
- i think she complimented quinn's (i think) looks before i can't remember when though (she said something about her bone structure)
-also stared happily (with quinn as stated in part one) when santana and mercedes were shaking ass
- and no straight person dresses goth lmfao
12. mike chang - bisexual
- don't really have an explanation except i'm 99% sure he and matt dated in season one
13. matt rutherford - bisexual
- same as mike, i'm 99% sure they both dated in season one
14. sugar motta - lesbian
- okay first of all she's brittana's child. so she's automatically NOT straight
- she also hates men (i can tell)
- look at the lesbian flag! it fits her :)
15. rory flanagan - gay
- just look at his outfits 😭
- was literally pining after finn and sam it's so obvious
- whatever happened between him and sugar in 3x13 (heart) was all platonic because i said so
16. joe hart - asexual
- i don't really have an explanation for this tbh
17. artie abrams - bisexual
- he literally said sam turned him on in 3x08 (hold on to sixteen)
- literally said david martinez's smile is cute like sir??? okay...
- because kevin said so
part 3 consisting of s4-5 characters 😍🫶 (also i couldn't add anymore pics 😭)
part 3!
1. rachel berry - bisexual
- she basically admires quinn
- calls quinn pretty like 90% of the time
- lea michele herself ships both faberry and pezberry
- this post
2. finn hudson - bisexual
- i don't really have an explanation for this except; “that was so gay” in artie's musical fantasy (i think) and “that's an image that i can never get out of my mind” when he saw sam as a stripper... like okay....
3. quinn fabray - lesbian
- literally drew [REDACTED] pictures of rachel on the bathroom walls
- LITERALLY f worded santana (twice, i might add)
-“i've always wondered what it would be like with a woman”
- “rosario, you are killing it in that dress”
- the entirety of 4x14 (i do)
- she literally stared at santana and mercedes while they were shaking ass in river deep mountain high (smiling happily i might add)
- joe: i've never met anyone who's gay // quinn: oh i guarantee you have (so... you?)
- the entirety of “it's a man's man's man's world”, need i say more?
- when rachel told her she and finn were getting married, she said “you can't”... why? cause you wanna marry her?
- dianna wore a “likes girls” shirt on tour once (should be enough to convince you that girly in fact ISN'T straight)
4. santana lopez - lesbian
- well i know this is canon but since i see A LOT of people (on AO3 especially) trying to erase her sexuality, here's me explaining why she IS in fact a lesbian (i am a lesbian too so don't fight me on this)
- she did not give out “mixed signals” on the show. i know she said she was attracted to both girls and guys in 2x15 (sexy), but that part was obviously a blatant lie. after f wording finn in 1x15 (the power of madonna), the first thing she did was to ask for a burger, like girly... really??
- she also cheated on literally every guy she dated (with mostly brittany), i mean come on if a guy did a good job to her, she wouldn't even think of cheating (i don't think so at least)
- she had more chemistry with any of the girls than any of the guys she dated/in the new directions
5. sam evans - bisexual
- idk if any of you guys knew this but he was actually originally introduced as kurt's love interest on the show, so.... 🤨
- also NO straight guy would take the time to do a whole macaroni portrait of another guy (as seen in 4x17; guilty pleasures)
- blaine literally developed a crush on him idk
6. kurt hummel - gay (,non-binary and asexual)
- alright no explanation needed for his sexuality, it's canon
-also i do not actually have an explanation for his nb headcanon... i read about it once and just went with it lmao
- i do however have an explanation for the ace headcanon, in 2x15 (sexy), he said he didn't like hearing about the sex talk burt and blaine both tried to give him, and to be fair, he seems asexual
7. blaine anderson - gay
- no explanation needed, it's canon
8. noah puckerman - pansexual
- he will literally shag anyone and everyone LMFAO
prt 2 coming soon cuz i can't add more photos lmao 😭
part two!
Reasons why Rachel Berry is bisexual and in love with Quinn Fabray:
She wore a sweater with the colors of the bi flag while singing about getting the attention from both boys and girls. Take me or Leave me is a song from the musical Rent performed by a bisexual female character (it’s a duet with a lesbian and a bi woman, but Rachel performed the part of the bi character)
Even though at first her admiration for Quinn was platonic in a “I wanna look like you” kind of way, it evolved into something more. No straight girl talks that amount of times about how pretty and beautiful other girls are. Rachel literally says Quinn is the prettiest girl she’s ever met and there isn’t a single ounce of jealousy in her tone. Rachel is definitely attracted to Quinn and often looks like she’s pining after her
She asked Finn what it was like to kiss another girl (Quinn)
Even though Rachel has every reason to hate Quinn she never hated her. She even gave her panties to jbi to not divulge Quinn’s pregnancy and she did this for Quinn: Quinn is the one who would lose her reputation, her parents, her popularity and her spot on the Cheerios. Quinn is the one who would be hurted the most if the truth came out, not Finn. Rachel did this to protect her. During the first seasons, we often see Rachel trying to support/help Quinn (another example is when Rachel tries to reach out to Quinn when she was a skank)
Was Rachel in love with Finn ? Yes, he was her first love, but around mid season two and the beginning of season three she started to develop feelings for Quinn too
Rachel seems often sad and defeated when Quinn dates men
She suggested to Finn to get Quinn a gardenia for the prom: the gardenia means secret love, of all the flowers that exist in this world Rachel specifically picks the gardenia. This can’t be a coincidence
The way she looks at Quinn, ma’am just say you’re in love with her and go
In this scene from the pilot she touches Tina’s boobs
She has sexual chemistry with every woman she interacts with, especially with Quinn during the first seasons and Santana during seasons 4-5. Her duets with Santana are often emotionally charged and full of chemistry: in “so emotional” it’s almost like they’re singing to each other and there’s a heavy romantic subtext, in “every breath you take” pezberry look like two exes who had a rough break up, but they still aren’t over each other. This song can be interpreted as “i’m obsessed with you so I’m gonna watch you every step you take” or “I’m so in love with you I always wanna be close to you”. Both keys of reading are valid
She went through Santana’s panty drawer, I don’t need to say more
She’s constantly teased by Santana and other characters about her sexuality, it’s curious that she never denies being gay. It often seems like the show is dropping hints about her attraction to girls
(because i have time on my hands and i hate myself)
So I've seen a few people react to this post and wanted to add my thoughts as someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community (i'm a nonbinary ace lesbian).
I realise the person who made the insta post is probably very young but they're also a cishet person talking about queer stories and queer experiences in a somewhat insensitive way and I wanted to add my two cents as someone who joined this fandom as a fifteen-year-old and at 29 is now a fandom "elder".
firstly, as the person who made the post is cishet, it's not their place to dictate what is and isn't "good" trans representation. it's also not their place to dictate whether or not they are "a transphobic". when discussing issues around trans representation, if you aren't a part of that community, you should sit back and listen to trans people (and you might learn something so you don't look so ignorant)
it's also super weird to say sheldon bieste shouldn't be trans because "they could have just focused on unique instead". you can have more than one trans character!!! ALL the characters could be trans if you want!
i can't believe i even need to say this but ... gay and bi trans men exist. non-heterosexual trans people of all genders exist.
"i know lots of people ship them and i'm not trying to cancel your opinions..." and yet here you are, trying and failing to convince people not to ship them.
listen friend - crackships exist. shippers gonna ship. sometimes people just don't like the canon ships and that's ok.
"Klaine may have some problems but it doesn't mean there is a need to ship them with another guy" - has it occurred to you that the people who ship Kurtbastian and Seblaine don't like Klaine?
*the next point is about Kurt in Laryngitis and I don't really have anything to say about it
this is the one that I sort of agree with but I didn't like Dani (she gave me Arielle Scarcella fan vibes and was probably a TERF) so I'm biased. at the risk of sounding like one of those people who defends their fave even when they're being kind of dickbags ... the biphobia started with Dani/Santana wanting to "impress" Dani who is (a) maybe the first out lesbian she's ever met and (b) openly biphobic. I also headcanon Santana as having ADHD and think Dani was kind of a hyperfixation of hers
"i always wondered what it would be like to be with a woman" is a very fruity thing for a straight person to say let's be real
here's a fun idea though: how about let's not just assume that everyone is straight?
(again, the above image was posted by a cis straight person)
😬
honestly this section to me feels like one big huge lump of text that my audhd brain is not absorbing in the way i want it to soooooo...
ok i'm gonna try here...
"i don't get why santana tries to get brittany while she is dating artie" ummmm because she has a crush on brittany ... what, is she supposed to just turn off her feelings just because brittany's dating someone else? she's a 16 year old child homie, give her a break jfc...
(obviously she didn't go about her feelings towards brittany in s2 or s4 in the best way but she was also young at the time and not great at communicating but i think it's important to recognise that she did get better as the series went on and brittana grew stronger as a couple in the long run)
as for "santana doesn't recognise brittany as bi" ... santana literally said in her proposal to brittany that doing it in front of the glee club would "upset all the single guys and gals" so obviously she is aware that brittany is attracted to people of different genders and openly acknowledges it.
i genuinely don't know what to say about this... i'm more of a casual klaine enjoyer so we're not at the level of deep philosophical analysis yet but if anyone wants to take this one (looking at you, scout) be my guest.
"i don't understand the hate towards klaine in s4 as a couple" ... i mean they weren't really a couple because they were broken up for most of season 4
blaine has really grown on me recently but "i needed you and you weren't there" wasn't much of an apology
the OP of the post has also said some sketchy things about race to a twitter mutual of mine, i.e. saying mercedes is racist against white people, which ......
so ... in summary
headcanons exist. webster defines headcanon as "something that a fan imagines to be true about a character even though no information supporting that belief is spelled out in the text"
while we live in a cisheteronormative society, we should refrain from assuming everyone is cis and/or straight.
it's okay for fans to prefer a crack couple over a canon couple (as long as they tag appropriately).
if you're a cishet person in a queer space, you need to approach queer stories with care and respect, and sometimes that involves not talking when you don't have experience with something
reverse racism doesn't exist
eat the rich and fuck the patriarchy
