Researchers Re-Engineer E-Coli DNA to Make it Programmable

A team of synthetic biologists led by Farren Isaacs at Yale University [has taken] Escherichia coli cells and replaced all of the UAG stop codons with UAAs. They also deleted the instructions for making the release factor that usually binds to UAG, effectively rendering UAG meaningless…

The next step was to assign a new meaning to UAG during protein production. The team did this by designing molecules called transfer RNAs and accompanying enzymes that would attach an unnatural amino acid – fed to the cell – wherever they spotted the UAG codon…

By reintroducing UAGs at specific locations, as the Yale team have done, unnatural amino acids can be added into proteins at will.

"We now have an organism that has a new code, and we can reliably and efficiently open up the chemical diversity of proteins," says Isaacs.

For example, artificial amino acids could be added that give proteins unusual properties, such as the ability to bind to metals – resulting in novel adhesives. Or enzymes could be developed that are activated only in the presence of other molecules – which could be useful for drugs. “The genetic code is conserved for all of life, so this is a fundamental step forward,” says Philipp Holliger of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. He says that because so much of the genetic code is redundant, there might be other codons that could be reassigned to expand the chemistry of living organisms.

Currently, Bajaj’s Boxer brand “commands a market share of 90% in Uganda, 40% in Nigeria, 35% in Angola and 30% in Kenya”, the statement said adding that “one of the main success factors, apart from the quality of the motorbike has been the company’s ability to cater to the service and spare parts requirements of its customers in these countries”.

Bajaj Auto also announced it has teamed up with SOMOCO, a locally-owned Indian company in Ghana and a subsidiary of the Mohinani conglomerate, to distribute its products in its 51st global market.

"Ghana’s motor-bike market is estimated to be about 100,000 units per annum," Bajaj Auto said adding that "demand has grown rapidly in the last few years thanks to a growing middle class. The company aims to be the market leader in three to five years time".

Bajaj Auto said the company would initially target the utility and commuter segment through its immensely successful motorbike brand which comes in two variants - the 100cc version and the powerful 150cc version.

Private Equity has a new Lobbyist: Ken Mehlman

Ken Mehlman former head of the RNC and the public affairs chief at KKR is now the top lobbyist for the private equity industry. Mr. Mehlman was elected on Thursday to be the chairman of The Private Equity Growth Capital Council.

PEGCC is the most prominent advocacy group for equity and capital firms such as TPG Capital, Silver Lake, Apollo Global Management, Carlyle Group and Blackstone Group. PEGCC was launched in 2007 and is currently being run by president and chief executive officer Steve Judge. Mehlman is succeeding Mark Tresnowski in this position. Tresnowski was a top lawyer for Madison Dearborn Partners.

“As a member of the PEGCC’s Board of Directors, Ken has long been a driving force behind our major initiatives,” said Steve Judge, PEGCC President and CEO. “We’re very pleased to have him as our new chairman. Ken is a unique talent with two decades of experience at the highest levels of government, politics and business. The PEGCC and our members will benefit tremendously from his leadership, advice and counsel.”

Mr Mehlman's primary responsibilities will be to help expand the PEGCC's outreach as well as educate and engage stakeholders about the value of the private equity industry. At KKR Mr. Mehlman has had a large role in formalizing KKR's outreach efforts including creating robust environmental, social and governance programs for the firms and its portfolio companies.

“I’m privileged to succeed Mark as Chairman of the PEGCC,” said Mr. Mehlman. “I have enormous respect for the PEGCC’s important work engaging with public policy makers to encourage more economic growth and retirement security for millions of Americans. I also share the PEGCC’s goal of building a community of investors who seek superior returns while also emphasizing active, responsible governance, long term investment and measuring success in years not quarters.

“I would personally like to thank Mark for his invaluable contributions and leadership for PEGCC and the industry as a whole throughout his tenure as Chairman,” said Steve Judge, PEGCC President and CEO. “From our many legislative battles over carried interest and the Dodd-Frank Act to the 2012 presidential election that brought our industry into the national spotlight, Mark provided the PEGCC with exceptional leadership."

Philadelphia sells PGW

Philadelphia Gas Works is being sold as advised by Lazard Ltd.  The administration of Philadelphia Mayor Nuttter continues to build a case for the sale of the Philadelphia Gas works. They released a cost benefit analysis showing how the sale would be good for the taxpayer. This new report was completed by financial advisory firm Lazard. The report estimates that the sale of PGW will be for between $1.45 billion and $1.9 billion. This sale will yield a net profit for the city of between $422 million and $872 million after PGW's debts are paid. Budget Director Rebecca Rhynhart claims the report is a conservative estimate of the value of PGW. She bases this on the opportunities that exist for new business opportunities and rate increases in the future. Mayor Nutter would like the money from this sale to go towards the city's pension system which is currently underfunded. Critics of this sale point out that the sale of PGW will lose the city $18 million in a year. Rhynhart claims that this will be made up for by additional room in the budget from the now funded pension funds.
