Ava Gardner and Robert Walker in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS (1948) dir. William A. Seiter

All Vanessa could do was nod. It wasnât her place to really question or need to know anymore than was being told to her. Vanessa purposely stayed out Athletics to avoid comparisons to her brothers and her little crush on the Dallas boy who lived down the block. The Hounds were known and the reputation of the kind of girls that appealed to them was legendary to the town coining a nickname for those kind of girls. Her father always warned what happened to those kind of girls.âItâs really not my business. You donât have to explain,â she explained, nonchalantly.Â
âWhat gave it away?â Vanessa was shy in the most traditional sense, but when it came performing Vanessa shined. She didnât need words or brains to try and impress people, just being in tune with her body was enough. Her movements said all her words were too shaken to say. âUnfortunately, ballerinas donât have the luxury of Wrestlers and Hockey players where all you have to do is bulk up and block. I tend to bake more than I actually get to enjoy,â Vanessa replied playfully.Â
And soon as the idea of other plans came up, Vanessa felt herself whimpering away a bit. If there was something he felt was more important to go to it felt better to give permission than to bee stood up. Or at least thatâs how she thought of it. âWe could meet after if you want?â Cheeks flushing immediately red as the words beautiful escaped her lips. âNo nickname needed. V or Nessa usually gets my attention.âÂ
He bit his lip, a nervous habit he picked up when he was younger. Not often did he get nervous with girls, but then again none of the girls that he was around were like vanessa. Not immediately trying anything she could to bed him, instead actually holding a conversation. She was quiet, but not in a weird way, it was endearing, it made him want to learn more. Dallas wanted to learn about her, get to know the girl hiding in the shadows. âBut I want you to know the truth, theres a million rumors surrounding the team and yet no one really knows the truth but us,âÂ
âNot saying anything, but youre tinier than most humans in the height department. And they tend to be able to be lifted in the air easier, and move lighter on their feet,â He spoke, the few amounts of dance knowledge he got from his siblings and cousins, âAnd theres not a lot of gymnasts around here, which is ironically made for smaller people based on the movements, but youd need a little but more muscle mass and calloused hands for that one,â he joked, before laughing lightly, âill give you, it does have its perks but we still have to be cautious of what we eat, not everything is made for healthy bulking. However, I was taught to never turn down baked goods from a known female,â sending a wink at her before smiling softly.
Dallas shook his head, âive been to more than enough team after parties, its always the same thing. Id rather spend time with my new best friend, get to know you better, and maybe introduce you to some fun spots around town,â Nodding at the nicknames, âTheyre nice, but I want something unique, something like,â pausing as he mused over the thoughts in his brain, âVanni,â
It had been far to long since Lia had seen her cousin, all the random calls or Snapchatâs, and the Skype calls for important events. Never really was the same, but she was more than grateful for the interactions theyâd had. The baby shower partly Lias doing, knowing at the end of the day Tori would appreciate it. And little V will love to hear the stories of the night. But keeping her secrets on the other hand, during family events, or run ins with those in the past were becoming more difficult as her cousin, but Lia would be damned if she wasnât called some form of Aunt, got cuter. And the closer she got to them walking into the room and seeing them, the more a smile spread across Lias face.
The same look of shock that took over Toris face was the one that appeared on everyoneâs. And sometimes Lia fell to the same status, shocked by the world she had brought herself into but ever so grateful. Everything about her life now was different, but all she wanted was her cousin by her side again. And finally her eyes were overtake by sheer happiness, her gaze taking in every ounce of Tori. From the same curly raven hair bouncing as she walked, the almost childlike grin atop her face, all the way to the bassinet sat in her hand. Effortlessly staying still as she walked, the actual amount of time shed done the same thing becoming present to Lia. âTori!â She squealed, wrapping her around Toris frame tightly. A childlike innocence falling over the two as they just took each other in, a year and a half apart but nothing felt different. They were same girls that would sneak out at midnight to meet in the park with the group, or go on random road trips during the summer of high school. âI missed you so much,â and the one thing that had changed was finally brought to the for front, her eyes training down to the child in the bassinet. âSheâs precious, and Iâm excited to spoil you both,â glancing back up to meet Toris gaze, âWell who am I to deny Sangria? Come on, letâs get out of the lobby,â taking the grocery bag from Toris other hand and heading over to the elevator, âIâll be honest, there may be one, or two,or twenty, shopping bags up their for you two,â shrugging lightly, âI couldnt help myself,â
@indiestars-rpâ
of all of her post-italy rendezvous (her parents, her unsuspecting baby daddy, his parents), this one felt easy. perhaps because lia was one of three people she did her best to keep in contact with from the other side of the world. one of two actual attendees at the skype baby shower she didnât even really want to have. or maybe she just knows that her cousin will accept her in whatever form she shows up inâskinny, fat, rich, poor, or even x2.Â
she lifts a brow at the sheer amount of marble in the lobby of the address she sent. when lia said her new beaux was loaded she was expecting a few fancy cars and evidence of a private education. what she steps into instead are the trappings of pure generational opulence. the luxury of it all has little time to settle on her though, because then she sees her, standing there in the flesh, looking just a little older than the last time, almost a year and a half ago if you could believe it. she figures she looks a little different as well, carrying a sleeping veronica by the handle of her bassinet in one hand and a grocery bag in the other. her smile is one thing sheâll never outgrow, the way itâs slightly impish and stretches halfway across her face when she squeals âlia!â and throws her free arm around her. suddenly theyâre little girls again, the ones that would beg their parents to allow the other to stay the night so they could stay up tilâ 2 watching movies they werenât supposed to, whoâd spend their summers joined at the hip, telling boys at the mall that theyâre twins and watching them believe it. âi missed youâ she says in earnest, holding her there for a minute before her attention turns to the baby. âsheâll wake up for you in a second, but tilâ then i brought sangria!â

âMaybe not for you,â Luke replied matter of factly. He let his free hand find its way to her thigh, comfortability giving it a bit of a squeeze. Always one to press his luck once he got enough time with a girl. He wasnât much of a pick bunny guy, but that didnât mean he wasnât temptedââhell look who Luke was withââbut it never went past fun temptation at least thatâs what his Hounds and the greater public knew anymore. âI pay for a bit ofâŚÂ discretion with my guy. You understand.â Luke turned to look directly at Lia, hoping she would get that discretion needed to extend to this as well. âDirty little secret, eh?â he chuckled more to himself than to Lia. He pulled into his apartment complex, cutting the engine.Â
âI think it would depend on who you ask,â a simple shrug, relaxing into the seat a little more and looking over at him, âIâve gotten a rave review one or twice,â laughing airily, almost like a small sigh. Her gaze finding his as he turned towards her, the look in his eyes telling her this this was a secret. That it was to stay between the two of them, and something told her it would be like that for a while. âI understand wanting to keep up appearances. I have my own discretions, you donât have to worry about me,â making sure she kept his gaze as she spoke. Lia wanted to be sure he could trust her, no matter what secrets came her way. âWe all have one or two, im sure time will reveal more as we go,â Turning away from him only when she felt the cut of the engine, and looking to see where they were.Â

She could see how off Kai looked, hell she looked the same underneath all he carefully placed makeup, but Vanessa couldnât find it within herself to find empathy. She wasnât there, but she had spent her ow time beating herself up literally and metaphorically trying to deal with it all. âStop it,â Vanessa replied firmly. âIâve been dealing with your bitchinâ and moaninâ for the past two weeks and Iâm sick of it. You know what it means to be a part of this family, heartbreak or not. If youâre not going to act accordingly, donât come.â
Right away Vanessa heard hints of their motherâs Souther draw in her voice, but she immediately shook it off; a face resembling their fatherâs apathy taking its place. âNo one is going to care that Mama died after this. People are going to assume we lost our mother to gang violence, drugs, or that sheâs doing time. So either honor Mama now or spend the rest of your life ruthlessly defending her. Either way youâre making an enemy of yourself in your home. She wouldnât want that.âÂ
Once their eyes met, Vanessa knew she had to hope strength. Though her eyes were blood shot, anyone who knew her not a singular tear was actually shedââjust rosy cheeks and slightly slowed movements were her guide. She followed in line, taking her place as the middle child between her brothers.Â
âYouâre going to regret this,â she whispered.
âPart of this familyâ he repeated back to himself as he spoke, a phrase he began getting used to hearing. Anytime he disagreed with a simple statement now, it was seen as disobeying his father and hed get the same lecture on how if he was a âpart of the familyâ then he would do as his older siblings did. Which in Kais mind, meant following along like a little puppy and hanging onto his every word. âYoure right I forgot mourning and recovery had a time limit, my apologies for burdening the great Vanessa Montgomery who tells people she has one brother,â And even at his age, he was as individual as they came, and to much of a mommas boy to worry about being in his fathers good graces. He knew he was always protected no matter how angry his father got, but now? He was out in the open, ready for the hunting and no one in his family or their friends were there to protect him and have his back, âeasy for you to say,â slipped through his lips before he had the time to process his thoughts.
âAh yes, the police chiefs wife in jail, doing drugs, or involved with a gang. Thatll really seal his legacy huh?â He hissed out before sighing for a moment, rubbing his face roughly. âLook, you keep up whatever picture perfect appearance you think you need to have. Unlike those two, and clearly yourself, I dont care if i show emotion. Everyone has an emotion, and everyone shares it in their way. Unfortunately for myself, I have three stone faced people surrounding me. Im gonna look out of place regardless if I speak or not, Id rather save myself the knowledge of knowing everyone saw me sobbing at my mothers coffin,â
He smiled and shook hands of the people who went by, nodding at some of words given his way. Already feeling to small for the group around them and wanting to slink to the corner with his mom, but unfortunately this would become his new normal. Being in the middle of the attention given to the Montgomery, regardless if they all knew the truth or not.
âHave you even thought to ask me what I want to do to honor Momma, or are you to busy pleasing dear old dad to care?â He whispered, before smiling at the gentleman in front of him.
izzyindieâ:
âNot really into the reviews. Rather find out for myself and return the favor,â Luke smirked. The idea of reviews raised his eyebrow, but he kept a brave face. In this town, who you are and what you did matter. The town was hierarchy of personalities and the Bakers were at the top. Lia would be a political and religious liability; that only intrigued Luke moreââsomething to sneak around, his eyes only, and still maintain peace all around. Sound like an easy year for Luke. âAppearances are everything,â he affirmed, matching the eye contact. He was swift with hiss movements, cutting the engine, and moving from his door to hers. âDonât think too much into it. Gotta sister and a mother and a church full of Sistersâ who command respect.â he downplayed to make it seem like he was trying to be impressive.
She raised a perfectly kept brow at him, tilting her head slightly, âwhat a gentleman, unfortunately Iâm not here for the gentle side of things,â a shrug falling off her shoulder, moving to look out the window again. While her family was big in the town, her parents helping more than one family around get off scot free, she was a different story. Falling from her spot as the favorite, she became distant, relishing in any and all alcohol and drugs she could get her hands in. Lia became more well known around the ravine, and around the degenerates of town, and slowly slipped from the hierarchy. Still keeping her place in school, never letting herself fall lower than she deserved there. But she didnât care what the adults had to say, they werenât the ones she had to interact with day in and day out. Instead taking a line here or there, maybe pop a pill when she felt like it, but always had a water bottle of vanilla rum and Dr Pepper, and a blunt or dab pen handy in her purse. Those were the secrets no one else around school knew, the ones she held close to herself for reasons unknown to her. âSo Iâve been told once her twice,â Lia knew the bakers reputation around town, but she never got close enough to see it for herself. After her fathers diagnosis she wasnât one for God, or believing in a higher power. She just existed and let the world do as it did, never worrying about the consequences of what she was doing; yet still being semi aware of herself. Watching as he moved around the car, and slipping out of the seat, a soft click as her heels touched pavement. âDonât all women? Commanding and deserving, however, two different things,â
Matias has really only found himself in the mall for one of two reasons, himself or a family member needed a new phone due to the last being broken. Or they needed new clothes. He wasnât there just to have a fun shopping trip, nor did he really have the extra money. But that was his life, and he was content saving what extra cash he had for other necessities, or at least how he deemed necessary.
Granted he also had been avoiding the shopping center for more reasons. He knew she enjoyed the place, and spending the money for the latest fashion. Not that he had minded coming with her, carrying the bags from store to store and getting the private fashion shows. But he didnât want to be the guy who only showed up when he wanted her, but he could never find himself able to commit the way she wanted or deserved. âHi,â he spoke back, his hand rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
There was something about the girl that was able to captivate Matias that no one else could, and that was why he kept going back to her. She made the summer time easier, having the youngest siblings home more often than not, and his local amusement park job always sparking back up. He was busier than a ticket booth at Coachella, but she was the part that slowed it all down and made the moments count. Only for him to consistently fuck it up when the winter rolled back around, a cycle he couldnât find himself to break even if he knew better. âJoel broke his phone, again, and apparently the 17 year old boy can not find the time to get his own phone,â he spoke with an eye roll, âBut I guess it was worth it for the pretty girl I spotted,â

Between his sister coming back around again, and his mother downing more bottles than he could count life had been a blur the past couple of months for Matias. Last year at this time he had met Mckenzi the girl having quickly became a soft spot in his dark world. But it was just a fling, or at least thatâs what he told himself when he regrettably cut her out. She was too pure to let into his secrets, his mind getting controlled by the substances slowly but surely. The people he began to allow into his life, whether it was business or pleasure, werenât good people to be around, and he wasnât going to expose her to that lifestyle.
But he couldnât help himself when he spotted her in the large crowd at the shopping center. His sneaker clad feet almost instinctively dragging himself in her direction. He knew better, he had just sort of up and left her, not really giving her the explanation she wanted or deserved. And yet, the blonde hair and electric blue eyes were drawing him in just like the first time. A smirk falling to his lips once he caught her gaze, âLooking as fine as ever kenz,â his tone dripping with flirtation as always, sending a wink her way.
It was the time of the year for Mckenziâs annual spring shopping spree. She finally got her winter paycheck from the jobs she did throughout the season. Being a model Kenzi had a reputation to uphold including keeping all of her social media profiles up to date. Thanks to modeling, she had expensive taste but it came with the crowd. She enjoyed shopping by herself so she wouldnât be influenced by others since that was fairly common in this industry. She tried to have a certain confidence about herself which included disabling negative comments on said social media. There was a lot the came with the career but it was something she always wanted.Â
The blonde walked out of Macyâs into the town square to see where she wanted to head next. Upon finding a store she caught a glimpse of what seemed to be a ghost from her past. The all familiar face brought a series of flashbacks to last summer from their hot and heavy moments to the cold winded end. Before she knew it she was being approached by the one she used to long for. âHey,â she whispered not sure if he could hear her among the crowd.Â
Her heart fell soft, there was a comfort when she was with Matias. âI havenât seen you in a while.â Mckenzi was oblivious to the fact this happened two years in a row. The summer nights being the best whilst the winter ones were quite the opposite. âWould it be wrong of me to ask what youâre doing here? Or are you stalking me?â She joked, trying to lighten the mood. âI know this really isnât your scene like at all.â
