Aegon is not the most competent politician, but he had good ideas: to break the blockade in the early stages, capture Harrenhal before Daemon, support the smallfolk, because success in the war depends on them, but everyone takes him for an idiot and eventually reaps the fruits of inaction (the KL is rioting, and Daemon gathered support in the riverlands).
