discussion about right wing radicalisation focuses near-exclusively on men becoming white nationalists but i wonder how it might manifest elsewhere. like, imagine a heavily online subculture of mostly women and they're dedicated to rooting out degeneracy, maintaining a rigid social order, refusing to acknowledge scientific consensus, being violently paranoid of a dehumanised other, adhering to exclusively eurocentric standards of beauty and politically dedicated to exterminating a minority group (possibly one that was already historically targeted for genocide). that'd be fuckin crazy lol
It's crazy how women who believe that all men are mindless rapists are like. Extreme anti-feminist strawmen who essentially don't exist in real life. And a man who believes that all women are mindless vessels for receiving sex is, like, your dad
what i'm begging people to understand is that a huge portion of evangelical/christians in usamerica do not genuinely and earnestly believe in their holy texts or core doctrines. for them, religion is a means to uphold white supremacy and patriarchy and they've convinced themselves it's their divine prerogative. that is what they believe. you can plead with them to "be christlike" or point out their hypocrisy until the second coming. they do not care. you can't reason with them because they are not interested in piety or morality they are interested in power and control

I know this is debate lord type shit but I do get legitimately mad when people defend openly unscientific ways of approaching social phenomena like you are doing pure ideology while calling yourself sensible and you don’t even know that your definition of sensible is itself ideological. not like me though I’m openly biased and ideological I love picking sides and dying on hills
on a more serious note, I fucking hate how everytime I try to talk about the fact that transmascs are particularly vulnerable to radicalization efforts by terfs (which yes, does often result in at least partial detransition) people interpret it as if I'm celebrating that fact. believe it or not I actually think its a pretty insidious threat to our community, and I don't know how you expect to combat it without being honest about the part regressive rhetoric and bad actors play in all this
saying trans men are gonna detransiton into terfs is an interesting take ill give you that
bold of you to assume they have to detransition to be a terf

transandrophobia guy who goes from using mra talking points about the dangers of misandry to a crypto terf who rants about "sex based oppression" sounds too comically on the nose to be real and yet...

I miss when I would get Tumblr asks that actually said things and weren't just digital panhandling scams.
tumblr users be like instead of giving your money to those scammer genocide victims who make me feel bad you should give it to a Real Charity™, which are famously incorruptible and only ever have the purest intentions
Just a reminder that these messages are scams, & no refugee going through such crisis would guilt trip people over Tumblr dms, threatening to kill themselves & their children. This is disgusting, & is a classic tactic to get you to panic & donate without thinking. If you wish to donate to refugees, there are MANY charities you can choose from. Never give your money to someone sending you random links in dms.

i really try to distinguish between being annoyed by semantic shifts in a pointless prescriptive way and being annoyed by semantic shifts because they make language less useful but whatever is happening to the word gentrification it's the latter
i need feminism because when jesus does a magic trick it’s a goddamn miracle but when a woman does a magic trick she gets burned at the stake

the short answer is that babies are just goated at phonology. the working theory is that in order to acquire language as fast as possible, our brains need to be receptive to any and all phonetic information from birth (and possibly even earlier; there's some evidence that prenatal infants pick up on rhythm and pitch information from the sound waves that travel from the parent to the womb). linguists have been testing them on this for a long time, and until they're about 6 month babies can distinguish phonemes from languages they've never been exposed to and who's phonology is completely different to their own. eventually the brain starts to lose that ability in order to focus on correctly articulating those sounds, which is an incredibly complex task, not to mention once you have to start arranging them into patterns to form words and sentences. basically to do takes up lot of cognitive effort that then can't be used to maintain such a massive inventory of sounds.
as for adults, I don't think it's quite accurate to say that it's impossible to learn phonology, since in order to fluently speak a second language you have to be able to understand and produce all the sounds, even if they're not 100% perfect. but in terms of why it's so much more difficult to perfect than something like syntax, it's partly of your brain not being as flexible anymore and, consequently both having a worse memory and a deeply engrained phonemic inventory, to the point that it's difficult for non-native speakers to even "hear" the difference between contrasting sounds your not familiar with (to be clear it's not that you physically can't hear it, it just doesn't register phonologically). this is also why people have consistent accents instead of making pronunciation errors at random; they're still following a set of structural rules, most likely very similar to the ones of native speakers, but with the influence of their first language changing it slightly.
so like. as i understand it, at any age, if your exposure to language is restricted to a single language, you will learn that language. like it just sort of happens, your brain figures out its grammar, semantics, etc, formal training HELPS but is not required. but this is *not* the case with the language's phonology! people will live in a foreign-phone country for years, primarily exposed to its language, they will understand it perfectly, generate it perfectly, and yet will still have a strong "accent" if not trained how to avoid it. that's weird, right? why doesnt the brain learn the phonology? (and why does it learn it perfectly as a baby?) is it too "low level", muscular-level, and that stuff gets "hardened" while higher level stuff is more flexible..?
So many Americans online don’t realize: We in Southeast Asia interact with working-class Americans far more than the rich ones. Why? Because our region is where poorer Americans actually come to work low-wage resort jobs, teach English, or retire on Social Security checks that don’t stretch at home. The ‘ugly American’ tourists? The military guys? The sexpats? Not exactly the 1% yacht crowd. But keep pretending your working class has no global footprint.
Straight culture’s orientation toward heteroromantic sacrifice is also influenced by socioeconomic class. Respect for sacrifice—or sucking it up and surviving life’s miseries—is one of the hallmarks of white working-class culture, for instance, wherein striving for personal happiness carries less value than does adherence to familial norms and traditions. Maturity and respectability are measured by what one has given up in order to keep the family system going, an ethos that is challenged by the presence of a queer child, for instance, who insists on “being who they are.” Queerness—to the extent that it emphasizes authenticity in one’s sexual relationships and fulfillment of personal desires—is an affront to the celebration of heteroromantic hardship. As Robin Podolsky has noted, “What links homophobia and heterosexism to the reification of sacrifice . . . is the specter of regret. Queers are hated and envied because we are suspected of having gotten away with something, of not anteing up to our share of the misery that every other decent adult has surrendered to.”
For many lesbian daughters of working-class straight women, opting out of heterosexuality exposes the possibility of another life path, begging the question for mothers, “If my daughter didn’t have to do this, did I?” Heterosexuality is compulsory for middle-class women, too, but more likely to be represented as a gift, a promise of happiness, to be contrasted with the ostensibly “miserable” life of the lesbian. The lesbian feminist theorist Sara Ahmed has offered a sustained critique of the role of queer abjection in the production of heteroromantic fantasies. In Living a Feminist Life, she notes that “it is as if queers, by doing what they want, expose the unhappiness of having to sacrifice personal desires . . . for the happiness of others.” In The Promise of Happiness, Ahmed argues, “Heterosexual love becomes about the possibility of a happy ending; about what life is aimed toward, as being what gives life direction or purpose, or as what drives a story.” Marked by sacrifice, misery, and failure along the way, the journey toward heterosexual happiness (to be found with the elusive “good man”) remains the journey.

I don't think gender is something which is joyful, any more than I consider capitalism to be something which is joyful. I think, like with capitalism, there is joy to be found and had within these class systems -- joy in resistance, in autonomy, joy and beauty in the finding of love and community, and joy and pride in courage and conviction. I think these things certainly are true. but at the end of the day, to me, what gender is, at its core, is a class system of violence, an immense structure of centuries of brutal and vicious subjugation and cruelty, a machine which punishes resistance-in-the-form-of-deviance with systematic and merciless force. I am the person I am because I am true to myself and I take joy in that -- this is distinct from my "gender," or rather my "gendering," which is a process of violence, an act which is done to me, without my consent, and against my will. That which renders me woman is nothing intrinsic to myself or about my choices -- it is the violence of society which renders me woman, renders me faggot, constructs my place in gender-class, places me within a system of subjugation. I find joy in being a woman not because of gender, but in spite of gender. my pride as a transgender woman, as a faggot, is in opposition to the forces of gender which seek to brutalize me for the way that I am. gender is not something I would ever, ever seek to preserve, or sustain, something which I consider not to be a sacred institution worthy of respect, any more than capital or empire. I consider gender to be my enemy, my opponent, the iron fist within the velvet glove, the barrel of the gun pressed to the back of my skull. gender and I exist in opposition to each other, with gender hell-bent on forcing me to submit to its will, and myself hell-bent on bringing about its total and absolute obliteration. by my analysis, it is critical that any feminist, any act of resistance against gender, correctly understand who the enemy is. the enemy is gender, and it has always been gender. we as transgender women are in a unique position to understand this, by way of the profound violence we experience under the orders of gender, by the consciousness imparted to us by the unique and peculiar acts of punitive cruelty struck against us under the commands of gender. but, for us to be able to do this, for us to be able to liberate ourselves from the wretched shackles of gender, so must we understand that we cannot trap ourselves in a prison of our own making, that we cannot mistake the prison for a home, that we cannot allow ourselves to be tricked into defending that force which exists only to do us harm.
