Chapter 4 is up!
*
Alexis wakes up to her phone pinging at her, irregular but insistent. Ted’s long gone into work for that weekend neutering extravaganza that she forbid him from discussing at home, so she’s got to fumble all by herself to get the phone off the bedside stand and unplugged so she can blink her eyes enough to actually read whatever’s on it.
There’s about a dozen WhatsApp notifications and a half a dozen texts; the latest text box is from Patrick and just says “ALEXIS WAKE UP.” She dismisses it; the next one says “ALEXIS WAKE UP.” The other four say the same thing.
“Oh my God, Patrick, chill,” she mutters, and checks WhatsApp. It is, of course, all Patrick, the first one at like, five in the morning. On a Sunday.

Summary:
How many times had Ellie begged him? Don’t leave me. Promise you won’t leave me. You won’t ever leave me, right?
I’ll never leave you, Joel always said in his gravel voice.
He never asked her to promise the same.
Or: After learning what happened in Salt Lake City, it’s a long road to forgiveness. Ellie’s not sure if she wants to walk it.
Hi there. I had a question for you about Watching Through Windows. I know it's been a long time now since your wrote it. I've read it a million times since it was posted. I always wonder, what made you choose to have Patrick NOT tell David their story? They tell him about losing the $$$, moving to SC, Alexis's history but not about him starting the store and meeting Patrick, etc. I guess I was just curious if u would share why you made that creative decision. Love the fic and all your work.
Hi hi! I’m so glad you enjoy the fic :D
So in canon we’ve seen Patrick withhold info a lot. I think he’d do that here too. As for why, it’s anyone’s interpretation tbh! But here’s my thinking in this fic (though I’m reaching back to summer ‘19– I haven’t re read besides listening to rev jo’s lovely podfic— so bear with me)
I think there’s three things driving Patrick’s (probably subconscious) decision-
* He’s super bad at talking about fraught things! Even in this future verse lol
* He’s protecting himself. Telling David all the most treasured details about their relationship and getting any negative reaction would be pretty devastating imo!! David hurts some feelings in this fic just because he doesn’t have the context to know better 🤷🏻♀️
* He thinks David is going to leave him regardless, and it’ll hurt less if David doesn’t doing it knowing all those precious things, and at least the memories will be preserved as a Before and After for Patrick
Thanks for your comment!!
I'm not sure how often you come on here BUT I just wanted to say that 'watching through windows' is my all time favourite fan fiction (not just in the SC fandom but OF ALL TIME) and I have the podfic downloaded and actually listen to it atleast 1x a month. I'm so sorry if this is weird but I just want you to know how much I love your writing and what a masterpiece and work of art that fic is❤
thank you so much!!!! this totally makes my day 😭❤️ I’m so glad you’re still enjoying it! (and yes @revolutionaryjo ‘s podcast talent is AMAZING). I really appreciate your ask!
I was rereading @helvetica-upstart‘s Watching Through Windows and I literally could not stop thinking about this line
I am so obsessed with your fic!!! It's ruining my life in the best way jsyk. Do you know when the next update might be??
Yay I’m glad you’re enjoying! Should be sometime this weekend probably??
Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Last of Us (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ellie & Tommy (The Last of Us), Ellie & Joel (The Last of Us), Maria/Tommy (The Last of Us), Joel & Tommy (The Last of Us) Additional Tags: mentions of TLOU2 characters but no spoilers / not TLOU2 compliant Summary:
It’s Joel’s first two-day patrol, and he wanted someone there overnight for Ellie. Gave Tommy a list of instructions a mile long, and he wishes it was the type he used to get for Sarah— not too many sweets, don’t stay up late, don’t you dare smoke. Nah, for Ellie it was give her space waking up from a nightmare or you might get knifed and there’s broth if she can’t keep down dinner.
* Or, a 3+1 about Tommy, Ellie, and trust.
