Inspired by Frenchie, our sewing king, and the little patches he has on his overshirt.
Thank you, lovely anon, for requesting! I hope you enjoy this!

Frenchie sat cross legged atop the dining table. He was currently contorted in an uncomfortable looking position in order to sew patches over the holes in his faded and paint splotched periwinkle overshirt. He had accidentally ripped a couple of holes in it while transporting a crate of supplies from the storage compartment to the kitchen for Roach, and was determined to fix his overshirt himself instead of leaving it be. Frenchie looked adorable with his mouth pressed into a line in an act of concentration, but the position he was sitting in seemed impractical.
“Wouldn’t it be easier to sew up your shirt when you aren’t wearing it, too, Frenchie?” You asked while looking away briefly from the deck of cards you were playing with.
“Maybe, babe, but I can make sure I like the look of the patches like this.” You said that Frenchie’s thought process made sense, but you only meant that partially so. You still thought that Frenchie looked uncomfortable enough to make the act not worth it. But all in all, you tried to focus on Frenchie’s sewing instead of focusing on his use of the word “babe”.
You had been aboard The Revenge for a couple of weeks now and throughout that time you had grown the closest to Frenchie out of all the people onboard. You noticed his usage of pet names for people, especially the people that he was closest to. So, you tried to not make a big deal out of Frenchie referring to you as ‘babe’ or ‘dear’ or any pet name of a similar vein. However, you couldn’t help but wish that Frenchie would call you a pet name in a romantic context.
“Oh no.” Frenchie exclaimed randomly.
“What? What’s wrong?” You questioned.
“I ran out of thread. I thought I grabbed enough but I might have been a bit over enthusiastic with the border.” He had been, but you chalked it up to Frenchie being attached to his overshirt and wanting to make it wearable for as long as possible.
“I can go grab some more for you.” Frenchie tried to stop you, saying that you didn’t have to do that for him. But you were already up and gone; going to find The Captain and his collection of sewing supplies.
Your trip to The Captain’s quarters took longer than you had anticipated. You had hoped that Captain Stede Bonnet would have been on the deck with Mr. Buttons or in the kitchens with Roach requesting meal plans, but Stede was in his chambers having Lucius transcript his travels. After you interrupted his monologue to Lucius, Stede gladly gave you the materials you needed, but held you up by asking what you were needing the material for. You eventually left The Captain’s quarters with a short but sweet explanation, leaving Lucius silently pleading with you to make an excuse for him. Now, with what you needed at hand, you headed back to where Frenchie remained.
When you returned to the dining room of The Revenge, Frenchie was still sitting cross legged on top of the table. It looked as if he was counting the stitches he sewed into one of the patches. When he finally heard you enter the room, Frenchie smiled brightly up at you, his smile reaching his eyes. You happily handed the pirate the materials he had needed and thanked you.
“Can you help me connect the two strings, pretty please?” You agreed and took the strings Frenchie had held out to you, one of which was still connected to his overshirt. You didn’t know if you were doing it right. You probably wouldn't have cared about proper sewing techniques if you were repairing your own clothing. But this was Frenchie’s overshirt and it had to be perfect.
While you were concentrating on the thread and making sure it was secure, you didn’t notice Frenchie staring at you. He had liked you for a while now. Frenchie had been through a lot in his life. He didn’t know if he believed in love at first sight after everything he had seen, but Frenchie could recognize his deep and immediate attraction to you as soon as he saw you join the crew of The Revenge. He wanted to do something to make his feelings known, but he was worried about the outcome. Because of his status in society, his previous romantic connections and interests ended poorly, but he was a pirate now and anything goes at sea. So, he could rationalise that there was always the possibility of a positive outcome.
“There. I think I got it.” You stated as you finished securing the two strings together.
“Cheers, my dears.” Frenchie took the now connected strings from you. Yours and Frenchie’s hands brushing against each other momentarily, causing the two of you to let out a small gasp under your breast. You don’t know if the pirate heard you, but you definitely heard Frenchie’s gasp at the connection. You looked up from where Frenchie’s hands had touched yours to his face to see his staring at you longingly. Maybe he had heard you.
You quickly sat back down in your seat and returned to playing with your deck of cards in order to avoid making eye contact with Frenchie. Frenchie eventually went back to sewing after a moment of gazing at the embarrassed look of your face. He definitely wanted to tell you how he felt now.
You could only think about how much you wished to make your own feelings known. Despite wanting to keep yourself from growing embarrassed again, you couldn’t help but look up at Frenchie when you thought that he wasn’t looking at you. Every once in a while, though, you would catch Frenchie looking over at you. Causing you to quickly return to idly pretending to be interested in your playing cards, or anything frankly in order to pretend that you weren’t just staring at your friend. Sooner than what you would have wished, though, Frenchie finished up sewing his overshirt.
“So what are your plans now that you finished up your little project?”
“I don’t know. Write a couple of songs. Hang around. There’s not much to do, really.” Frenchie twirled a braid in his hair between his fingers, partially out of nervousness and partially out of need to make his hands useful. He desperately wanted to tell you how he felt now because he now assumed your reciprocation and that made him ecstatic.
“Yeah, The Captain's less prepared for sea than any of us.” You both joked around a bit about the non-piratey atmosphere of the ship for a bit, slightly diffusing the tension that had been in the air. You knew that you cared for Frenchie and he obviously cared about you otherwise the two of you wouldn’t have spent the past weeks getting to know each other. With the concentrated silence and back and forth looks over, you gained a bit of courage to finally make your feelings known.
“I have a thought on what we could do.”
“What would that be, babe?” Frenchie snapped his fingers, excited to hear what you had in mind. You got up from your seat and stood directly in front of where Frenchie was still sitting. You placed your hands on his shoulders, partially to steady yourself and ground your remaining nervousness. You leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Frenchie’s lips. You lingered close to Frenchie’s face, close enough to bump his nose with yours before pulling back far enough to see Frenchie’s lovesick expression.
“Now, was that a friendly kiss or …something more?” Frenchie fiddled with his hair at the base of his neck, hopeful of your response.
“I would like it to be something more.”
“Good.” Frenchie stated definitively. He smirked and before you could do anything to stop him (not that you would have wanted to), Frenchie pulled you into him and smashed his lips against yours. Once you realised what was happening, you happily reciprocated, leading the two of you to passionately make out on top of the dining table.

The Master was incredibly accommodating to you during the predicament you were in. Each new day, he would deliver you tiny gift boxes full of new and expensive-looking clothes. Even though you were grateful, not everything The Master gifted you was in your preferred style. So, The Master ecstatically modelled the new clothes for you on various miniaturized mannequins around your size in order to try and convince you into wearing what he had picked out for you. You could tell that he was enjoying the idea of taking care of you, but you couldn’t wait to return to your original size.
“I think that you would look absolutely lovely in these, darling!” The Master said as he held the doll of the day, clad in an outfit incredibly similar to a navy and burnt orange tartan suit that he owned.
“I don’t know, Master. Can’t I just wear some pyjama pants and a hoodie?”
“It is always best to be prepared for the day. Do you think a hoodie is a presentable attire for an Easter Vigil dinner with the Marquess of Grandspire? I don’t think so.”
“I understand, but why do I have to do ‘prepare for the day’ when I can barely do anything this size? We aren’t actually going anywhere today.”
“You can do a great many things. Climb through vents, rummage through wiring, you could even be a great fly on the wall during missions and adventures thanks to your new size!” The Master exclaimed as he bent down to your eye level. You were currently standing on a tall table, but given everything, that offered no real height compared to The Master.
“Temporary size.”
“Yes … temporary size …” The Master repeated your comment in a sadder tone, and you couldn’t understand why but before you could question him, he spoke again.
“But while you are this size you should wear this outfit, at least once. Please, for me?” The Master presented the doll again and looked at you with wide and longing puppy dog eyes. You couldn’t say no to him when he was pleading with you like this, it happened so rarely, and you would kick yourself in the future if you refused The Master on one of the few occasions where he was actually begging for you.
“Okay, Master. For you.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Being so small, compared to your previous size, had been a weird adjustment to make over the weeks of The Master trying to fix his TCE. The only good thing seemed to be that you could hold onto The Master, or be incredibly close to him, without bothering him.
Currently, you were resting in The Master’s bigger on the inside waistcoat pocket. You had been setting up a little reading nook in there. Instead of reading, though, today you just watched The Master as he fiddled with a new device. You were so invested in The Master’s succinct and thoughtful movements that it didn’t even occur to you to question him as to why he was not trying to mend his TCE.
“You have nice hands.” You said out of nowhere because you were so enamoured by the look of his long fingers and vein-covered hands, the outlines of his tendons were on full display to you.
“Thank you, my love.” You continued to stare at The Master’s hands as he worked.
“I can’t believe I didn’t notice how veiny they are.” The Master paused in contemplation over what you had just absentmindedly stated.
“Does that intrigue you?” You could hear a teasing tone laced within The Master’s voice and that finally brought you out of your daze.
“Shut up. Just finish up whatever you are tinkering with so we can cuddle.”
“Ooo, distraction. I must press further on this issue at a later date.”
“I’ll deny everything!” You ducked back into The Master’s pocket causing him to chuckle before returning to the device.
The Master took a long time to finish his experiment on the equipment, as he was very thorough. However, to him, it felt like a few minutes. In actuality, about three hours had passed and you had fallen asleep long ago.
“What do you think of this? Love?” The Master called for you once more before looking to you to see what was taking you so long to answer him. To his surprise, you were fast asleep in his pocket. The Master hummed contently. You looked so cute like this. The Master loved protecting you, taking care of you, and being responsible for you. It felt like it was one of the only things he was actually good at, but eventually, this would have to end. The Master would have to turn you back to your actual size and protecting you would be so much more difficult to do successfully.
The Master huffed and looked at the notes on deminiaturisation that he had completed weeks ago. He could change you back now if he wanted, but The Master didn’t want to do that. So, with delicate movements, The Master just left his study and walked to your shared bedroom.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Master finally had some time to spend alone with you without worrying about any alien disturbances or space tech stuff that you could never understand the constant maintenance of. You asked The Master to read to you. It had been a while since he had done that. When the state of things was calmer, The Master read to you almost every night. So, you were excited to participate in this couple ritual again.
You were currently curled up on The Master’s chest, while he was lounging on his back in your shared bed. You were quite comfortable under a specially designed mini weighted blanket that The Master had gifted for you a couple of days ago. Though you were getting thirsty, and you didn’t have any water beside you. The water was all the way on the bedside table and for you, now the size of a doll, was a decent distance away.
You decided to not disturb The Master by walking in front of his face and blocking his eyesight from the book he was reading. So, you just decided to climb onto the pillows and behind The Master’s head. At the beginning of your travel to get some water, though, you slipped on the pillow and grabbed a piece of The Master’s hair to keep yourself from falling completely.
“Ow!” The Master yelped.
“Sorry!” You apologised but continued to climb onto the pillows (and The Master’s head) before finally reaching the bedside table and refreshing yourself with some nice cold water.
“That was my hair.” The Master looked over to you with a hint of a grimace lining his face.
“I needed something to help pull me up so I wouldn’t fall.”
“There are other things pulling my hair might help you with, love.” The Master mumbled while fiddling with the bookmark of the book.
“Turn me back to my usual size, then we’ll talk.” The Master looked back at you, but he didn’t respond. He just remained stone-faced. You drank a couple more gulps of water, and The Master still hadn’t said anything. He was just staring at your bittersweetly.
After you finished your small glass of water, The Master stretched out his hand to you and you climbed into his palm. The Master moved you back to his chest and you immediately cuddled under the blanket and clung to The Master’s clothes, eagerly waiting for The Master to continue reading.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Master told you that he would be stepping out of his office for a second. He said that he had to get something from one of his storage units and that he would be back soon, but he had been gone for longer than you expected, and you were now getting bored.
You decided to crawl out of The Master’s coat pocket, which was a bit difficult as it was bigger on the inside and explore his desk and the things he had been tinkering with. Once you escaped your roomy confines you shimmied down The Master’s coat and climbed onto the arm of the chair. You then hopped from the arm of the chair and onto the office table.
The Master would have been upset by you doing all of this. He hated when you would do anything dangerous, but that hatred grew when you had been shrunk by his TCE. The Master seemed so much more protective over you now than you had ever seen him before. It was cute, you thought, but sometimes you worried if The Master would ever let you out of his TARDIS once you were turned back to your original size.
Once on the table, you looked around at all of The Master’s little projects. Most of them were dangerous, so you never got too close to them, though you did find them interesting from afar.
Then you decided to look through The Master’s notes. Many of them were written in Gallifreyan, but some were either in English or another language that The TARDIS translated for you. The Master always tried to keep his knowledge of various languages strong, so he often wrote his notes in a mix of alphabets from across the Universe.
When you were rummaging through the random papers you suddenly saw a sheet about basic miniaturisation and deminiaturisation. It looked as if it was torn out of a book. T was then followed by The Master’s notes and plans on the subject. Obviously, you couldn’t read everything, but of the notes that you could read, it appeared that The Master figured out how to turn you back to your natural height. You will be back to your normal self!
There was a little note attached to the plans, though, covered in The Master’s rushed handwriting. So, before you got too excited about being yourself again, you read the note.
You were unaware if this note was originally written in Gallifreyan and The TARDIS was trying to help you read it by manually translating it, or if The Master had written it in an easily translatable language, but the notes stated:
‘You have to turn them back!’ That line was circled many times.
‘How about Tomorrow?
Tomorrow…
Next week!
Maybe a couple more days from now?
Just a few more days…’ Each of those lines had a line drawn through them.
‘At least turn them back before their birthday!’
You huffed as you walked away from the notes. You didn’t know how to feel. The Master had been so kind to you during this time, but he was also lying to you. He was keeping you weak. You began to breath rapidly as anger began to grow within you.
The Master suddenly walked through the door of his study in a happy mood, completely unaware of what you had just discovered. In fact, he was whistling as he tossed a random machine part up into the air and caught it with ease.
“Have you been waiting to turn me back?” You yelled in rage. The Master froze in place, his jaw dropping slightly.
“My love, let me explain …” The Master held up his hands defensively.
“How could you? You know how everything has been a struggle for me since this happened!”
“I know, but -”
“No buts! I don’t want to know what weird excuse you have, just turn me back!”
“You just looked so cute -” The Master tried to barter with you, but you weren’t going to listen to any of The Master’s manipulations. You just wanted to be yourself again.
“Now!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You haven’t spoken to The Master for a couple of days now, not since he deminiaturisation you with his long-ago-repaired TCE. You needed to make The Master feel sorry for what he did to you, and it’s not like you could just ask him to drop you off at home. The Master wouldn’t allow that! So, the only option you had before you was the silent treatment.
The Master was in complete shambles without you. He was so used to taking care of you and you happily returning the favour that he didn’t know how to act without you paying attention to him.
You were currently in your room, which wasn’t the most optimal hiding spot, but it was comfortable. You had been sneaking around The TARDIS, thanks to her help, in secret passageways and hidden rooms. Though, you often stayed in your room whenever The Master was out looking for you. He would always return to your room after his search, in the hope that you were in there and would finally answer him.
“Please talk to me, my love. I am dying without you!” You heard The Master yell from the underside of your door. He had been yelling for you for about fifteen minutes and you were beginning to grow incredibly annoyed.
“You aren’t dying. You’re just being dramatic.”
“Y/n! Please let me in!” You heard The Master’s excitement upon hearing your voice again, but you weren’t going to give up your stalemate against the alien.
“No.”
“I’m sorry!”
“I don’t forgive you.”
“Please, I have been awake since you discovered the truth. I’ve tried to sleep, but I can never sleep soundly without you, you know that. Can please just take a nap together then you can go back to hiding from me.” You sighed heavily and then walked to the door of your room. You could see The Master’s fingers poking out from under the door. You were tempted to step on his fingers, but you pushed that thought away from your mind. That was too extreme of a reaction. So, you simply opened the door quickly, with a stone face, and before you saw The Master lying on his stomach on the floor.
“This better not be a trick.” You spoke with a cold tone that honestly scared the Time Lord. The Master quickly scrambled onto his knees and grabbed your hands pleadingly in his.
“I promise that this isn’t a trick, my love. I know that I should have helped you sooner and there are no excuses for why I didn’t. I have been agonising over the decisions I made, and I am so sorry. But I really need you.” The Master collapsed into you, nestled into your middle, and wrapped his arms around your waist tightly.
“Are you going to fall asleep on your knees or would you rather sleep in my bed?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You snuggled into The Master’s chest, trying to get closer to him even though you were already incredibly close. You did miss him during your time apart even though you were still outrageously upset with him.
The two of you had slept for hours since reconnecting. The Master was still tired and drained, however, but he also just wanted to enjoy beginning in your presence once again. Every so often, The Master would brush his hand against your skin, feeling your warmth with longing. He really was sorry, but he loved taking care of you.
You shifted, trying to get comfortable. You were not able to find a position as comfortable as the ones you slept in when you would sleep on The Master’s chest or stomach when you were small, though. So, you huffed loudly.
“What are you thinking about?” The Master asked in his rough, sleepy voice.
“Sometimes I just wish I was small again.” You tried to scoot closer into The Master’s chest, again.
“Well, I could-”
“No!”

------------------------------------------------------------
You had met The Doctor many times before. For some reason, the two of you always ended up in the same place at the same time. However, the times that the two of you met were rarely peaceful. So many times you found yourself attacked by a random alien wanting to get to The Doctor, and every time, The Doctor saved you.
You would be lying to yourself if you said that you didn’t have feelings for The Doctor. How could you not have feelings for the person who saved you random encounter after random encounter? But how could you possibly tell someone so monolithic that you had a crush on them and that you wished to see them in more intimate, less terrifying, circumstances? It seemed like such a daunting task to you.
Today would not be one of those less terrifying days for you, however. The day did start out normal. You went to the shops and got some groceries, cleaned your apartment and did some work for the upcoming Monday. But when you went to go for a little walk to the nearby park in order to stretch your legs and get out of your home an alien appeared out of nowhere and prepared to attack you. You didn’t know what to do. You tried to run away, but the alien crowded you in. You still tried to run away from it because it seemed slow and lumbering, but then the alien hit you over the head with the butt of their weapon. You didn’t knock out completely, but you were in no state to help yourself.
In your haze, you could feel the alien dragging you back to its ship. Then you heard a noise. The most beautiful noise in the Universe. A wheezing sound going in and out of time until it stabilised and then suddenly stopped. The Doctor was here. He was here to save you. But before you could actually rejoice in the fact that The Doctor had saved you, you fell asleep.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up in your bed, neatly tucked in under the covers. Your head felt completely fine as if nothing had ever happened. On your bedside table, there was a glass of water, a plate of Jammie Dodgers (one biscuit of the bunch had a bite taken out of it), and a vase of freshly cut flowers. You looked to the window and saw through the break in your curtains that the sun was still up but was clearly about to set.
Suddenly, a crash rumbled throughout your apartment, originating from the kitchen. You then heard a shout that sounded like The Doctor talking to himself. You were instantly relieved. At least a stranger hadn’t broken into your home.
You grumbled stiffly out of bed and wrapped a quilt that you had never seen before around your sour body. You assumed that The Doctor had given you some alien medicine that treated your probable concussion, but it caused you to feel a bit stiff. Before you left your bedroom, though, to see what The Doctor was doing in the kitchen, you snatched a Jammie Dodger a quickly gobbled it down.
Upon padding into the kitchen, you saw The Doctor running around the place making some delicious-smelling food. He wasn’t wearing his statement jacket, just his button-down shirt, braces, and bowtie. He brushed his hair back and looked behind him, briefly making eye contact with you. He turned back around to the food he was preparing but did a double take and then excitedly said hello to you once he fully realized that you were now in the room with him.
“Ah! Y/n! You’re awake! I was hoping that you would be soon so I would have to wake you up. I made you some dinner.”
“Thank you, but you didn’t have to do any of this, Doctor.”
“Of course I did. Don’t be ridiculous.”
The Doctor then instructed you to sit and relax while he finished making you dinner before serving it to you with his unique brand of dramatic flair. The two of you then ate contently, exchanging polite conversation intermingled with The Doctor’s explanation of what had happened to you early that day. But eventually, you both finished eating meaning that The Doctor would probably have to be leaving soon. Something in your brain must have clicked while you were asleep; you needed to confess your feelings to the person you cared about most in the Universe.
“Can I do something that I have been meaning to do for a while?” You asked hopefully.
“Ooo, yes, please! I love new things. Always have. You got a new thing; I will race to try it!” The Doctor rambled as you stood up and rounded the corner of the table until you were directly in front of The Doctor. You could tell that The Doctor was going to continue to talk about how much he loved trying new things, so you leaned down and kissed The Doctor. In the kiss, you channelled all your gratitude for him and all the growing feelings you had for him. Eventually, you ended the kiss with a bite to The Doctor’s bottom lip and then licked where you bit him before retreating back to your seat.
The Doctor looked at you shocked for a moment before jolting up from his seat. He ran out of your kitchen toward the front door of your flat before running back to you.
“I’ll be back in a tick, I promise. Do you trust me?” You nodded bittersweetly. You trusted him, of course you did, but you were hoping for something bigger in response. A second later, though, you heard the same wheezing sound you heard before going in and out of your kitchen. Suddenly The Doctor’s TARDIS appeared in your kitchen. You were already amazed because you had never seen The TARDIS in action before, but then The Doctor bolted out from the doors of his ship.
“Tadah!! Do you like it?”
“Like it? Doctor, I love it!”
“Would you like to travel with me, then?”
“Really?” You never thought that The Doctor would ever invite you onto his ship.
“Yes! Of course! I’d love to travel with you, Y/n.” The Doctor kneeled down to where he was level with you in your chair and then caressed your face before pecking your lips. He then kissed your nose and let his head rest against yours. Your face broke out into a cheek-hurting smile before you tackled The Doctor into a hug. He quickly stood up to avoid falling over onto your kitchen floor and reciprocated the action. He then spun you around a couple of times before setting you down.
“So where to first?”
It seriously means so much to me that 14 says "I love [insert beautiful character here]" multiple times.

--------------------------------------------------------------
If you had not witnessed what had happened yourself, you would have sworn that the man currently dusting off his trousers in your back garden had just climbed over your fence in an attempt to break into your home. Strangely, though, that is not what you saw. Instead you, after getting some shopping delivered, observed a man in a Victorian-looking outfit fall from the sky and land far too close to the cherry tree your father had planted to lighten up the place when you had moved in. The man then jumped up onto his feet like falling from the sky happened every day.
You had been observing the man just over the sill of your kitchen window for the past couple of minutes, unsure of what to do. The man fell from the sky and looked completely unharmed, there weren’t any protocols to follow that you were taught in school about how to deal with a situation like this one.
You ducked under the sill when the stranger looked your way, just in case he was here for ulterior motives. When you peeked back out through your window, the unbelievable man seemed to be talking to a couple of birds that landed on the edge of a water basin. When you were young, the birds would always stop by that basin mid-journey, but since you have moved in, no birds stopped by even though you restored the basin to how it looked in your youth, built birdhouses around your back garden and left piles of bird seed throughout your yard. You couldn’t help but let out a huff of jealousy that this stranger could convince the birds to talk to him, let alone show up, when you have had no luck in that department for months.
The man laughed at whatever the birds had chirped. Then he gestured to you and seemed to tell a joke that had the birds roaring with laughter, if birds could roar with laughter. You stood up to your full height, rolling your shoulder contemptuously, then leaned against your window sill annoyed with the stranger’s easy way with the birds. The man seemed to fully notice you now that you weren’t trying to hide, so he waved a genuine wave in your direction but his smile was sad as if he hated himself for having scared you before. You found yourself waving back but quickly stopped when the man’s smile appeared to lighten.
The man said farewell to the birds and strode over to the backdoor of your house. He knocked in the “Shave and a Haircut” rhythm before holding his hands behind his back and looking up at your house. He probably meant no harm, you assumed, but there was no way that this man was normal. He literally fell from the sky and he didn’t even have a scratch on him.
You walked over to your kitchen door, briefly stopping to arm yourself with a newly purchased knife first. Then you opened the door slowly after taking a tentative breath. If the stranger did try something, at least you had a weapon behind your back.
“Hello! I am kind of in a hurry, which is not ideal given the circumstances, but can you help me? I think you are just who I need!” You tightened your grip on the knife.
“Oh! God! Oh god, no. Not in a creepy way! I don’t want to hurt you.” The man held his hands up defensively and laughed awkwardly.
“I promise.” The man softly uttered the promise. He looked at you with soft, hopeful hazel eyes that seemed hard to hide secrets. You considered him and everything that happened since he fell from the sky for a moment. Then you found yourself caving to the man’s hopeful demeanour.
“What do you need?” The stranger’s face instantly broke into a soft smile.
“Firstly, just something to eat and drink.” The man still held his hands up in a defensive gesture. The man looked apologetic, confused, broken and just lost, definitely not the type to hurt you. So even though it was probably incredibly stupid, you let the unbelievable man into your home.
After some trial and error, the strange man finally found food that he found acceptable and didn’t make him sick. He made an American-style breakfast, with gigantic waffles, fried eggs(more over medium than sunny side up), and crispy bacon. You don’t know how he made the majority of the food, given the fact that you didn’t own a waffle maker straight out of a continental hotel breakfast bar or any bacon in your kitchen, but you turned your back on the stranger once and he had said items. Finally, once everything was cooked and plated, he drenched his entire plate in soy sauce. You had heard of people dipping their eggs in soy sauce, and in theory, it sounded good. However, this man’s plate practically turned into soup due to the amount of soy sauce he had poured onto his food. The man made you food, as well, while he was making his own but you made sure to make your desired alterations. You weren’t in the mood to eat waffles swimming in soy sauce.
As the man shovelled food into his face like he hadn’t eaten in days, you tentatively placed a corner of your waffle in your mouth. It was buttery and warm, you could almost taste the love put into the dish. You looked at the man again. There was something different about him, but you couldn’t tell what it was, other than the obvious. There was something bigger, deeper, than the obvious, though. Whatever made this stranger different excited you and you hadn’t felt excited in a long time. The exciting man was unexpected, however, and you didn’t know if you were ready for someone as exciting as this man in your life right now. You reassured yourself that the man would only be in your life for this meal and this meal alone, but maybe you could allow yourself to open up to him slightly.
You placed the knife you had been holding behind your back, and in your lap while the stranger was in your home, onto the table. Close enough for you to grab if you needed but you were starting to believe what the man stuffing his face before you was saying. He just needed help and wasn’t going to hurt you.
“Thank you. I promise that you won’t regret that.” He looked up, alerted by the noise of the knife hitting the table, and he smiled his soft at you.
“Don’t mention it.” You mumbled into your food. There was a moment of silence, except for the sounds of eating, until the man cleaned his face with a napkin and spoke up.
“If you don’t mind me asking, whose house is this?”
“Mine.”
“Well, yes, but …” The man looked around your kitchen and then back to you, trying to politely insinuate that you couldn’t afford your home. ‘Trying’ being the operative word because the man was definitely failing at being polite. You sighed, why not unload your baggage onto a stranger?
“It was my great aunt’s. I spent a lot of time here when I was young and when she passed I inherited it. Given the state of the world right now I’m not going to turn down the opportunity to own a home that I can actually afford.”
“It’s a bit of a fixer-upper, though.” You glared at the man fiercely. He asked and you answered, why did he have to criticise your family and way of living in the process?
“I don’t mean to be rude, I just mean that I can help.” The man quickly tried to correct your interpretation of his statement, but you remained reserved. He was a stranger after all. Best not to get too comfortable.
“I don’t need your help.”
“But -” You cut the man off before he could make another inappropriate comment about the state of your home.
“I don’t know you.”
“But we could get to know each other.” The man leaned forward over the table, he had a hopeful smile ghosting over his lips. You retreated backwards into your seat, though, away from the man’s hopefulness. His personality excited you, yes, but what if you were hurt by him like you were hurt by others in the past? You didn’t want to feel that disappointment again. For some reason, you wanted to be held in high regard by this man but the fear that he was simply using you, like other people had, kept haunting your mind. So, you broke eye contact with the man and peered over to the vintage clock on your wall.
“I thought you said that you were in an emergency?” You mumbled passive-aggressively, but the man didn’t seem to notice or care about the sudden change in your demeanour. He seemed more grateful that you reminded him of his true reason for interrupting your day.
“Right! Do you have the time? My own watch doesn’t seem to be working properly.” The man tapped the face of his watch a couple of times and even from your seat across the table you could hear the small crunch of broken glass and gears. You showed him the time on your phone out of convenience.
“Oh god!” The man exclaimed, but then another thought visibly popped into his brain and took over.
“Why do I keep saying that? ‘Oh god?’ Is that from my future or past? Or is that just me? I don’t think that’s me.” The man looked to you like you might have the answer he was desperate for, but you had no idea what he was talking about. This was just another strange occurrence from the strange man.
“Who are you?” You asked exasperatedly. How could someone like him be real and in your kitchen and want your help? In your mind, he could do so much better than you.
“The Doctor?”
“Doctor Who?” A knowing smile crept across the man’s face.
“Just The Doctor, love.”
“‘Just The Doctor?’ Who calls themself ‘The Doctor’?” You retorted, mimicking his Manchester accent.
“Me. I’m The Doctor.” His face shifted as if he just realised something. “Hm, apparently I’m confident in this regeneration.” This man was unbelievable.
“How do you exist?” You asked. You were hitting the threshold of where you were beginning to feel out of your depth.
“Easily. It’s called breathing.” The man smiled at you widely, showing off the roundness of the apples of his cheeks. All you could do was sigh, overwhelmed.
“You are completely ridiculous”
“Ridiculous? Ridiculous. Interesting. Fun! I’m ridiculous!” The man’s face rapidly shifted from offended to curious to ecstatic within moments.
“I didn’t mean it as a compliment.”
“Oh, well, I’m taking it as one.” After taking one final bite of food, the man jumped up from the table and bounded out your door. The man was so much, in a good way, but you weren’t prepared for something like this to happen today. You leaned back into your chair again and sighed deeply with your eyes closed, revelling in the stillness in your kitchen without the stranger in it with you. You frowned. Then you opened your eyes and looked at the aftermath of breakfast. You realised that you missed that man. No, you hadn’t known each other for that long, but ‘The Doctor’ whoever he was brightened your day, even if you wished to deny that fact.
“Well, come on.” The man suddenly popped his head through the door, the expectation that you would simply follow him, and curiosity that you hadn’t done just that, was etched deeply into his face.
“What?” You barked back. The man rolled his eyes and sighed. The act seemed to fit his style. You would have to tell him in future.
“I am freshly regenerated, there is going to be an alien attack in 15 minutes, and I would like your help, again. So, will you help me?” The man confidently strode back into your kitchen as he spoke. Then he held his hand out for you to take, that soft, hopeful smile of his was back and as effervescent as it was before. He was completely ridiculous, but your life had been missing ridiculousness for a long time. Maybe, just maybe, he would be good for you.
“You better not get me killed, you ridiculous man.” You placed your hand into The Doctor’s palm. The Doctor’s smile then grew into a joyous one as he rubbed his thumb against the back of your hand softly.
“I’d never let that happen. I promise. Now let’s get going.” Before you could respond, The Doctor ran out of your kitchen, pulling you out of your chair and along behind him toward an apparent alien attack.
