She was right. I was hiding. And I wasn’t yet ready to stop. So I put everything I was feeling into the music. And once I did… that song… just… worked. I mean, that’s how it was back then. We had to do everything ourselves. We put it out on a tiny label and hand-delivered copies to every DJ we knew. God, it was fun! Suddenly Bernie and I were doing four shows a night. In the Midtown clubs where the mainstreams danced. The roller discos in Central Jersey. All we had to do was play two songs, and people lost their minds. But we always ended our nights back at “Better Days.” They knew what the song was really about. I may not have been comfortable enough yet to dance with her… But making music together, making everyone else dance, it was the next best thing.
