Thesis: Hannibal fell in love with Will even harder because, not after, but because of Will‘s betrayal.
There is this perfect wonderful boy you‘ve become utterly obsessed with ever since laying eyes on him for the very first time. In season 2b Hannibal looses himself within the utter humanity that the promise brings to, very possibly, have his wildest dreams come true: this perfect boy is not only becoming your friend after you thought you‘d lost that friendship, he sees you for who and what you are, accepts you, and wants to join you. Imagine the unbearable elation he must have felt when Will brought him Randall Tier, cooked with him, I mean, no wonder Hannibal was loosing his mind.
Now this man betrays you. We all know Will devastated Hannibal (and I think Hannibal was both surprised and not surprised about how strongly he felt), but he also stepped from a place above all mankind, a place right beside Hannibal, to a place above Hannibal. His very own cruel God. Not someone for Hannibal to shape, to guide through his Becoming just how Hannibal sees fit, but someone better, higher, someone out of his manipulative reach. I think he fell all the more for him because Will refused to be taken in, how Hannibal wanted to take him (and how a part of Will wanted to be taken). Because, as all mortals, he realised he was truly powerless before his God. Will would either come to him, or he wouldn’t have him at all. And that ruined Hannibal entirely.

the way will says, “you were supposed to leave,” so full of tenderness and passion and fucking fury, brimming with both affection and hatred for this horrible, beautiful man who has taken everything he has ever loved and then brought it back right before his eyes, and the way hannibal looks him in the eye, with a gaze filled with yearning and betrayal, and says, “we couldn’t leave without you,” so tense and wounded and emotional, and fucking hating himself for it because how could he have been foolish enough to trust this terrible adonis, how could he have been foolish enough to let himself love once more, and the way will looks at him, soaking wet, trembling in shock and longing and another emotion that he cant quite name, because he wants to, he wants this life more than he can put into words, but he also despises the fact that he is even considering this, the fact that he warned hannibal, helped him, and abigail is standing behind him and the man he loves hates is standing in front of him, and he doesn’t know what to do, and he is afraid that he is tearing in two, and the minuscule glance down to hannibal’s lips, for just a moment, as they are caught in each other’s gaze.
hannibal no longer slicking his hair back and letting it grow out longer and softer in italy is his version of cutting bangs and dyeing the ends hot pink after a really bad breakup.
This scene hurts me physically.
Putting his palm against the glass is such a pure gesture. It's as if he wants to say "I miss you" no, more than that, it's actually "I long for you, you are missing from my life".
Up until the moment Hannibal surrenders, he is usually the one to initiate physical contact, caressing Will's face or embracing him. But this. This right here is Will longing for him. For his touch. For his whole being. Not in a sexual way essentially. As he said, they are conjoined. Being separated just doesn't feel right for either of them.
And his eyes say even more. The longing is there, his eyes are so soft, he almost smiles in a bitter-sweet way. It's so frustrating for him that that damn glass wall is pulling them apart. Cause basically being far from Hannibal led to losing touch with his own self. He buried deeply again any urge to kill and pretended that he was happy with his mundane life.
But seeing Hannibal after 2 years made everything come back to him.
It's also such a comforting gesture. It's as if he tries to communicate something to Hannibal, it's as if he wants to comfort him. I personally believe that Will hates seeing Hannibal trapped in there. And Hannibal understands that, that's why he says later "don't worry about me, Will". They are able to communicate even like that, even when they are separated by a wall.
I could probably write thousands of words only about these few seconds. This scene is destroying me.
hannibal: remember the time I lied to you about your physical and mental illness and gave you seizures and let your fever get dangerously high and convince an old classmates to join in on the gaslighting? :)

hannibal: remember when I burned someone you cared about alive and convinced you you killed a bunch of people and shoved the ear of our surrogate daughter down your throat and messed with your fishing lures and got you put in prison for my crimes? :)

hannibal: remember when I killed your good friend and displayed her in little slices and sent someone to kill you and got your biological child aborted then symbolically aborted the surrogate daughter you already thought was dead but you got to see alive for 5 seconds before I slit her throat and made sure she bled on your face after gutting you and blaming you? :)

hannibal: remember when I gave your escape plane ticket away to someone and tried to replace you with someone I don't love at all and then sliced your head open because you are my most specialist boy and I just *had* to eat you because I love you? :)
